Episode 11
###
November 4th, 9:00 AM.
Three days before the Hanahoe military rebellion.
The U.S. embassy in Iran was in a state of emergency.
“Are those guys really crazy?”
“You can’t contact the government?”
U.S. Embassy staff in Iran look on anxiously as they watch Iranians protesting outside the embassy, seemingly ready to storm in at any moment.
“All the phones are disconnected. I think they cut all the communication lines outside.”
Both the phone and the fax are unavailable.
Since this was a time when there were no cell phones, all means of contacting the outside world were lost.
Ambassador Bruce thought about taking his staff and trying to escape by force, but the only weapons in the embassy were two pistols, and most of the embassy staff were civilians. Trying to escape with two pistols and fifty civilians in front of the hundreds of people was tantamount to suicide.
“Ambassador, what should we do now..”
All the staff members looked at the ambassador. Their eyes looked so anxious. As the ambassador and the person in charge of this space, Bruce had a duty to reassure and protect them.
“First, let’s bring a desk or something and block them from coming in.”
Ambassador Bruce takes the lead and brings in desks, sofas, and other items to block the door. The staff also follows Ambassador Bruce and brings in furniture and other items they see around them to block the door.
“Ambassador. Surely… you’re not going to come in here?”
A woman moving furniture next to the ambassador asks Bruce in a trembling voice.
“I don’t know.. I hope not..”
Bruce knew.
On the surface, this may look like a protest by civilians, but in reality, it is an action by the Iranian government to put pressure on the United States.
As evidence, there are people gathered in front of the embassy, looking as if they might storm into the embassy at any moment, but the Iranian police and military are not responding at all.
In fact, it means that we were condoning and acquiescing to their actions. No, rather, we were helping them.
‘I have to do what I can for now…’
Ambassador Bruce silently did what he could for now. All he could do was block the door as much as possible and check the food and other survival supplies inside the embassy.
“Whew.. Is this it for now..”
After about 30 minutes, the area in front of the embassy is filled with furniture. It’s not a surefire solution, but it’ll be a stopgap measure.
“Ambassador, please eat first.”
“Okay.. I need to fill my stomach first.. Let’s eat something first.”
Embassy staff take out canned food that was left as emergency food and eat it. The anxiety that had been there eases a little as soon as they eat it. But that doesn’t last long, and the noise in front of the door becomes louder.
And after a while, the firmly closed embassy door begins to shake.
BAM!! BAM!!!
Crackle!!!
The embassy gate splits in two. The Iranians outside began to break down the doors and furniture blocking the embassy one by one with a giant axe that they had brought from somewhere. The furniture blocking their way began to collapse one by one.
“Ambassador..! What should I do now···!”
People are extremely anxious. It will definitely come in here in just a few minutes.
Ambassador Bruce looks behind him and hands David the last remaining pistol.
David was the only person with a military background in the embassy.
“David, right now, I can only trust you. I’ll distract you, so escape through the back door somehow, tell your country what’s happening, and request rescue.”
“Ambassador···.”
David takes the gun and hesitates for a moment.
“If you don’t go now, we’ll be in more danger.”
“.. .. All right.”
David takes the gun and runs out the back door.
And then Bruce takes out his last remaining pistol to attract attention and fires a warning shot into the sky.
bang!!
“This is the American Embassy! What you are doing right now is clearly a violation of international law!”
Speaking fluent Persian, Bruce warns the Iranians outside, drawing their attention.
‘Please… I need to contact my home country.’
A moment later, the last piece of furniture blocking the embassy breaks and a flood of people pours into the embassy, each carrying a weapon such as an axe or a knife in their hands.
The ambassador surrendered, putting his gun on the ground and raising his hands. He then spoke to the embassy staff behind him.
“First of all… Since one person somehow escaped, if we can contact the home country, they will somehow come to rescue him. So everyone, don’t worry too much.”
puck!!
“Ugh···!!”
And then, a few moments later, a crowd of people came and started indiscriminately threatening and assaulting the embassy staff.
Some people were even carrying rifles.
‘As expected, they were in cahoots with the Iranian government.’
“Ugh..!! I threw away my weapon. Please stop assaulting the staff!”
Bruce tried to stop the people somehow, but it was no use.
The man holding the rifle struck Bruce in the head with the buttstock.
Red blood flowed from Bruce’s forehead.
“Ugh···”
“Be quiet! If you don’t want to die, you’d better be quiet!”
Ambassador Bruce collapses and groans in pain.
‘Please… David…’

Fortunately, David escaped through the back door, was shot in the leg, but was able to escape with good luck. He then headed to a nearby telephone station to contact his home country.
And this incident reached the ears of the President of the United States only an hour after it happened.
“Mr. President! This is a big problem!!”
President Carter asks his Chief of Staff, who came into the room without knocking in the middle of the night.
“What are you doing at this hour of the morning, Chief Secretary?”
He spoke in a serious voice, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
“Right now, it is said that staff at the U.S. embassy in Iran have been taken hostage by Iranian protesters.”
“What.. what did you say!!”
Carter hurriedly got up and put on the clothes hanging next to him.
“There is no contact at all with the Iranian government?”
“Yes.. Even though they say they are protesters.. in reality, it seems like it is tolerated by the Iranian government.. or rather, it seems like it is led by the Iranian government.”
“Is this it? You’re going to completely turn your back on us!”
Carter’s face contorts with anger.
“What should we do, Mr. President?”
“First, convene the NSC.”
“All right.”
The Chief of Staff quickly contacts the NSC members, including the Vice President.
An hour later, an NSC meeting begins in the White House underground bunker.
Everyone gathered except for the Vice President who was overseas.
“Are you all here? As you all have come, you must have heard the story, but currently, about 50 people, including Ambassador Bruce, have been kidnapped as hostages at the U.S. Embassy in Iran.”
The chief secretary looks at the people and briefly explains the incident.
“We must send the army immediately!”
“Mr. President, this is a declaration of war against the United States! We must send the fleet immediately!”
The Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are excited and say that the military must be sent in immediately.
“We haven’t fully grasped the situation yet. If we send troops in under these circumstances, it will lead to an all-out war. It’s only been five years since the end of the Vietnam War, and are you talking about starting an all-out war with Iran?”
The National Security Advisor is serious and opposes. It has only been five years since the nightmare of the Vietnam War ended. Even for the United States, it is not easy to fight another all-out war.
“Sir! So, are we supposed to just sit there and do nothing while 50 American citizens are being held hostage?”
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff becomes very angry.
“That’s not what you meant now!”
The National Security Advisor also stands up against it without support.
“Okay.. everyone calm down.”
The President calms down the excited National Security Advisor and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
“Now is not the time for us to fight among ourselves. It is understandable that it would be difficult to start an all-out war right away. First, let’s continue to try to contact the Iranian government, and if that doesn’t work, let’s try a small-scale military operation to rescue the hostages.”
“Mr. President!”
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is excited when Carter agrees with the National Security Advisor’s opinion. However, from Carter’s perspective, it was a huge burden to go to all-out war when nothing was yet confirmed, with only a year left until the presidential election.
“Understood, Mr. President. First, I will try my best to contact the Iranian government through diplomatic channels. And… Everyone, please be careful not to let any information leak to the press. If the press finds out about this, it will be a fatal blow to the election.”
The chief secretary strongly urges you to do so.
But the request was of no use.
The Iranian media treated it as if it was something to be proud of, and they made headlines just five hours after taking the embassy staff hostage.
And this information was instantly spread throughout the United States.
###
“How many people do you think there are?”
“At a guess, there seem to be around three hundred people.”
Despite the night falling, the Iranian forces near the embassy showed no sign of abating.
“What about our side?”
“There are 104 people in the central area and about 100 mercenaries, approximately 200 people.”
“But those guys… Don’t they look like regular soldiers?”
“That’s right. Judging by the weapons and such, they are definitely not civilians. They are regular Iranian soldiers.”
“It’s not easy..”
After the American embassy staff were taken hostage, it was none other than the Iranian regular army that was guarding the American embassy.
In fact, the Iranian government was the one leading this effort.
“10pm today is not going to be easy. Security is very tight.”
Yeonseok continues to look towards the US embassy and asks the Iran team leader next to him.
“When do they pray?”
The team leader looks at his watch and says.
“Usually between 5:30 and 6 a.m. There are about 10 hours left.”
“I guess I’ll miss out a lot then?”
“Yes, there will be some essential personnel, but most will probably leave for a while to pray.”
“Okay. Then I’ll wait for that moment.”
“Okay, then I will convey it that way.”
And at 5:30 the next morning, out of the hundreds of soldiers guarding the embassy, only about a dozen left, all of them heading somewhere.
Yeonseok, who was watching the situation from a building next to the embassy, asks an employee about the situation.
“There are about ten people left.. How long does it take from here to the prayer center?”
“It takes about 10 minutes.”
When he hears the 10-minute story, the curb signals.
“Okay.. Then, the operation begins now.”
“We’ll snipe first, then when that’s done, we’ll move in together and rescue the hostages.”
The mercenary captain Hanuel speaks as he looks at the curb. He is a Frenchman of Iranian descent, but he was trained in Iran from a young age.
“All right.”
As Yeonseok nods, Hanuel signals to the mercenary snipers through the radio.
The mercenaries on the rooftop begin firing at the Iranian soldiers with silenced sniper rifles, trying to be as unnoticeable as possible.
Bang!! Bang!!
Bang!! Bang!!
“Ugh..!”
“Ugh..”
In an instant, more than a dozen soldiers are killed.
“Enter!”
And as soon as the soldiers are cleared out, the central security staff enter the embassy according to the radio transmission from the curb.
“Are you okay?”
“Who… who are you!”
Ambassador Bruce asks the Central Intelligence Agency staff. Bruce is still uneasy, as he does not know if they are allies or enemies.
“Don’t worry. We are your allies. I will give you a detailed explanation as we go, so please leave quickly.”
The central security staff quickly untied the ropes that were binding the hostages.
And when I came out, there was already a gunfight outside.
It was an Iranian soldier who was shot and still alive who made the radio call.
“Get out of here quickly!!”
As Yeonseok evacuates the embassy staff by car, he asks the mercenary captain Hanuel.
“Are you already from over there?”
“Someone’s radioing!! They’re coming. We need to get out quickly.”
Bang!! Bang!! Bang!!
The sound of gunfire breaks the quiet dawn.
“Okay! Everyone, get in the car quickly!”
The guards quickly evacuate all the hostages into the car. The central police officers also get into their cars.
Finally, he gets on the car and the curb beckons Hanuel. Hanuel sees him and shouts at the mercenaries behind him.
“Okay, that’s it! Now let’s escape quickly towards Türkiye!”
“All right!”
About twenty cars are speeding towards Türkiye.
