The Chairman Who Doesn’t Regret Episode 19 – Breakwater (4)
Walking to my mother’s store.
It was quite a long way, but it wasn’t hard at all. Just looking at my little sister walking next to me or in front of me made me smile.
Of course, my younger sister seemed to have a complicated mind because she had different thoughts from me. She must have thought a lot about how to tell her mother, and how to change her mind after talking with my older sister and mother in the morning and deciding.
“Hoo-”
At the sigh of the little sister walking ahead.
Swish!
I hit my little sister’s back with the palm of my hand without any hesitation.
“Ouch! Is this kid crazy!”
“The young man sighed.”
“Huh? You really want to do a portrait today!”
“Trust me, oppa, just once!”
“That’s going to kill me!”
I ran forward like a shooting rocket. My little sister was chasing me like crazy, but I was still a man going through secondary sexual development, so I wondered if I would be pushed by my sister.
“If I catch you, I’ll kill you!”
My little sister is complaining.
Yeah, the little sister I know has to be that strong, like the strongest person in the world.
Kwak.
I had to cross the road, so I stopped walking and ended up getting caught by my older sister. It was an era where the term “jaywalking” was meaningless, so I could have just crossed, but I caught her just in case.
Safety first.
Isn’t health the most important thing?
Exactly! Exactly!
The little sister who puts a headlock on and punches the forehead with honey.
“Oh my! I told you to trust me!”
“This is my brother until the end.”
My older sister, who had been patting my head hard, calmed down her breathing and let me go.
“How can I help you?”
I winked and shot my little sister with my index finger and thumb like a gun.
“Yeah, let’s just die today.”
“Okay! Okay!”
When I raise both arms in a gesture of surrender, my sister looks at me with a displeased expression.
“I only trust you, oppa!”
“So what’s the method, you punk!”
“It’s not fun if you know.”
“No? It seems like it would be fun.”
I quickly dodged my little sister’s hand that was rushing to wrap its arms around my neck like a snake and spoke.
“Sister, you go first.”
“What? Where are you going?”
“Yes, there is something like that.”
He tried to grab me again, but I dodged his hand again.
“Tell Mom well, I’ll be there soon, it won’t take long.”
“Hey! Hey!”
I decided to ignore my little sister’s call. I didn’t want to explain in detail how I handle things here because it wouldn’t make sense.
If it’s hard to say, you can show it with actions. So I decided to be a little more proactive. It takes a lot of work to be someone’s breakwater. It’s a hassle to have to do useless things.
My family was putting up with all this hassle without saying a word, and once again I felt their gratitude reaching all the way to the tips of my hair.
“Hoo-”
After running for a while, I started to get out of breath.
Finally, I was able to arrive at my destination, the Junggye-dong Academy Street. Although the government is making a fuss about cracking down on illegal private tutoring and cram schools, the Junggye-dong Academy Street is packed with students.
Well, the bald old man must have banned private academies and tutoring under the pretext that students would protest if their heads got bigger. College students these days are just a pain in the ass from their perspective.
Aren’t they just trying to divert people’s attention from worldly affairs and the media with the 3S policy and such?
“Is that it?”
The academy building is clearly visible in the distance.
Strangely enough, it is located right in front of the police station, but the police do not seem to have any intention of cracking down on the academy.
past.
So my whole life.
I stepped into the academy building where I had spent so much time.
I learned English with terrible pronunciation at this academy and saw some results. In today’s Korea, English literacy is more important than conversation, so it’s no wonder that academies are so popular.
Well, it’s not like the future is any different.
How will parents’ enthusiasm for education change?
Daughter.
As I open the glass door and go in, the sound of bells greets me. Then, the female employee sitting at the desk looks at me with a strange look.
“Are you a student at our academy?”
“No, I came to take the level test.”
“yes?”
“Don’t I have to take a level test to enroll in this academy?”
“That’s true… but did the student come alone?”
A female employee who speaks politely to students, which is unusual for this day and age. I have a vain thought that the reason this academy has grown to this extent and become so large is partly due to the thorough training of its employees.
I guess I have that much free time now.
When I first came into this academy and took the level test, I was really intimidated by the crooked letters in English, but I can definitely see that I have changed.
“Yes, I want to take the level test first.”
“Uh… Right now, all the teachers are teaching….”
The female employee looks at me with a troubled expression.
“Youngmi, what’s going on?”
A man wearing a suit and speaking with a sharp tone appeared in a long hallway.
It was such an unfamiliar face that I wondered if there was anyone like that at this academy.
“Oh, Mr. David.”
David, are you a student abroad?
David glanced at me and the female employee called Yeongmi alternately, then nodded as if he understood.
“I have some free time, should I take that student’s test?”
“Oh, is that okay?”
He looks at me with the corners of his lips raised and his head tilted.
“Student, what grade are you in?”
Yeah, that kind of natural informality was more common back then. I guess that female employee was just a particularly kind and polite person.
“I’m going up to the second grade.”
“high school?”
“yes.”
“Follow me.”
I followed him into the small room, even though he was speaking in English.
“The level test is usually administered as an exam, but that’s wrong in Korea.”
I nodded at his words.
It would be difficult to evaluate the Korean-style English education that focuses on literacy as good.
He hands me a yellow piece of paper and a pencil.
“Since there’s no test paper for the level test right now anyway, why don’t you write a self-introduction in English here? I think that would be a good enough test.”
Well, that seemed like a good testing method.
Above all, I felt like I could demonstrate my skills a little more objectively. I felt that this test would show me how deeply I understood English, rather than simply solving problems and getting the correct answer.
“Good.”
Without hesitation, I picked up a pencil and began to write my self-introduction in English.
From the cliche stuff like where I was born, where I grew up, and who my family members are, to the fact that I have a mother who wants me to go to an academy even though I don’t necessarily need one.
“I think this will suffice.”
The instructor, who was busy with something else, filing his fingernails and holding out a yellow piece of paper, glanced at the paper and straightened his posture.
“What is this? Is this really what the student wrote?”
“yes.”
“Are you writing in cursive?”
“I find cursive handwriting easier.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
He seemed a little embarrassed, and started reading the self-introduction I had written with a blank look on his face.
“Hah, hah. Hahahaha!”
What’s so funny that you’re laughing like that?
“Student, you’re a really fun friend, aren’t you?”
“Is that so?”
“Hey, I wonder if there’s any need to show off your skills any more. You don’t want to go to school?”
“yes.”
He glances up and down at me for a moment, smiling. I can’t even remember how long it’s been since he’s dared to look at me like that.
He nodded as if he knew what he was talking about, then took out a book from the bookshelf in his room and held it out to me.
“Can you read this out loud?”
“yes.”
As I stared blankly at the book he handed me, a deep exclamation of admiration burst out in my mind. The title of the book written on the old hard case was Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
I think this academy has quite a few treasures.
“She should have died hereafter···”
As I started reading the book, the person who was the instructor looked at me with wide eyes.
It’s not that I don’t understand why you’re surprised by my pronunciation. In this day and age, the English language in Korea is probably Konglish.
“Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.”
“wow!”
He claps his hands in admiration.
“Is this enough?”
“Oh, that’s enough! That’s enough! Are you a student who studied abroad? Or maybe, a black-haired foreigner?”
“No, I’m Korean.”
“Wow, your pronunciation is no joke. Your sophisticated pronunciation would probably be very popular in high society.”
“I will take that as a compliment.”
He chuckles at my reaction.
“You’re a really interesting student. As it says in your self-introduction, I don’t think you really need to come here.”
“Right?”
“Yeah, with this skill level, I’d definitely get a perfect score on a high school exam.”
I raised the corners of my lips and said.
Now it seemed time to get to the main point.
“So now, shall we get to the main point?”
“Huh? The main point?”
“yes.”
He looks at me as if he finds it strange.
“What is the most important thing in school?”
“Um, how many students?”
“Right, so how do we increase the number of students?”
“There must be a lot of excellent students, right? There must also be excellent teachers.”
I nodded.
“Right, but do you know what the most effective way is?”
“What is it?”
“You’re trying to seduce your parents.”
“Seduce your parents?”
“Yes, I think that if my child just goes to this academy, his or her English skills will improve rapidly.”
“Oh, that’s convincing.”
“I heard that this academy has a scholarship system.”
“Yes.”
He raises the corners of his mouth.
“He really is an interesting guy.”
“I think you understand, so may I get up?”
He flipped over the yellow paper I had been using and poked at it as he spoke.
“Write down your personal information here and leave your contact information. Do you want to bring your parents? Or do you want to call for a consultation?”
“Are you going on a business trip too?”
“Kekekeke.”
He laughed for a long time.
I wrote down my personal information and contact information on the piece of paper he handed me.
“So, how do you persuade parents?”
I smiled and looked at him intently.
“It’s not fun if you know.”
“I’m really curious about you.”
He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye, as if he was very curious about me. I quickly held out my right hand to him.
“How? Are you going on a business trip?”
“Puhahaha.”
He said, holding his belly and laughing, then wiping away tears from his eyes.
“I am David Kim.”
“It’s Jeon Gang.”
Soon he pretends and takes my right hand and shakes it.
“Deal.”
“Deal.”
He and I looked at each other, smiled, and started walking together.
“Youngmi! I’m on a business trip!”
“Huh? Teacher! You have class in 30 minutes!”
“Wait a minute! There’s no one else who can teach you practical conversation skills besides me anyway.”
“Huh?”
He must be a fairly capable person.
Or maybe he was just my pace, but he just started following me with a grin as if he found it funny.
As I was about to leave the academy building and take the lead, he grabbed my shoulder.
“Where?”
“Should I go on a business trip?”
“No, so it’s close?”
“It takes about 30 minutes on foot.”
“So, let’s go by car.”
He points backwards, quickly.
You can see several cars parked in front of the academy building. One car in particular stands out.
The Royal Salon made by Tatadau, which will disappear in the future. He says this while putting the key in the car that was a symbol of wealth before each Grandeur came out.
“Hey- Ta.”
I chuckled and got into the car.
“Oh, you’re not going to sit in the back? I was going to swear at you if you did.”
“Manners maketh man.”
He snickers.
“You don’t have any friends?”
Did you see it that way?
“There is.”
He tilts his head.
“That can’t be true.”
We arrived really quickly as we walked for 30 minutes on a road with few cars.
Like Mongryong Lee who returned home in glory, I got out of the car and opened the door to Kang’s restaurant with force.
When the door opened, the first thing I saw was my little sister with her head bowed with a very serious expression on her face and my mother with an apologetic expression on her face.
“A puppy?”
“Hey! Why are you here now!”
I winked one eye and made a gun with my thumb and index finger and shot at my little sister.
I swallowed the thought that I had at least built one tetrapod, although it may not be a breakwater.
