The Chairman Who Has No Regrets Episode 28 – The Leftover Business (5)
Every time I open my eyes in the morning. When will this anxious heart feel refreshed? Time will solve it, but it seems I can’t help but feel anxious.
“after-”
I start my day with a sigh of relief.
“Oh my, you’re really awake again?”
This is what my mother said when she came out of the room and saw me making up the bedding again today. I smiled and nodded.
“Are you going out today too?”
“Oh, just for exercise.”
Mother nods her head with a pleased face.
“Don’t run too much, or you’ll hurt your joints and suffer for the rest of your life.”
“Yeah, I understand.”
As I followed my mother to the multipurpose room, my eldest sister’s shoes caught my eye. Last night, my mother was talking about something difficult, so I didn’t pay attention to them, but when I looked again, my eldest sister’s shoes were still the same ones that fell off the day before yesterday. When I secretly picked up the shoes without my mother moving around busily in the multipurpose room, fortunately, the soles were still attached.
Looking at the sole, which was slightly larger than the shoe, I thought it might have been the sole of another shoe glued on.
“Tsk.”
“why?”
I clicked my tongue without realizing it, and my mother looked at me, wondering if she heard me.
He shook his head as if it was nothing and opened the brown iron door.
“I’ll be back-”
“Okay, be careful-”
“huh-”
Crunch.
I close the iron door and walk away, but my mind is complicated.
I don’t know exactly what my mother meant by that saying, “You have to earn the right amount and spend it the right way.”
Is it the right way to spend money to serve others and their children warm rice and eat the yellow rice yourself? Is it the right way to earn money to wear shoes with the soles worn out?
I don’t know yet.
Thud thud.
Suddenly, I lowered my head and looked at the shoes I was wearing. They weren’t branded shoes, but they still had some of the marks of new shoes. I lifted my feet and looked at the soles, and I could tell they were definitely new. I guess I bought new shoes when I entered high school.
Plus, I was always moving by bus, so maybe the soles of my shoes never had time to wear out.
I kept thinking about it, but no real solution came to mind. And in the meantime, my body arrived at the newspaper distribution center.
“Huh? You came today too?”
Kim Gyu-il looks at me with surprised eyes. Soon, he makes a happy face and pats Hong Tae-soo while nodding to me. The guy just glances at me without saying a word and then turns his head back to go about his business silently.
Kim Gyu-il, whose lips were licking his lips, approached me and spoke.
“Are you going to come out every day now?”
“Oh, it’s good because it’s exercise.”
“Really? Then milk today too?”
When I nod, Kim Gyu-il smiles brightly and hands me my share of newspaper and milk. When I accept it, Kim Gyu-il pokes Hong Tae-soo in the ribs.
“why.”
“Use it.”
He was quite threatening, but Hong Tae-soo, perhaps because he was a head taller than Kim Gyu-il, paid no attention and went about his business. Kim Gyu-il looked at me with a bashful look and winked. I nodded as if it was okay and left the newspaper distribution center.
There was a time when I had a hard time saying thank you. In fact, if you asked me if I had ever said thank you to someone, I would tilt my head. The last time I said thank you was definitely to my mother a few days ago. I couldn’t remember anything else.
“See you at school.”
At my words, Kim Gyu-il smiles brightly and waves his hand. That guy is such a bright guy. He must have lived without anything, but how did he grow up without a single wrinkle? I actually find Kim Gyu-il more amazing and mysterious than Hong Tae-soo.
Maybe that’s it, that look.
I wonder if this is the correct way to write it, just like my mother said.
**
I’m used to the silence that comes when I pass through the classroom door. I’m also used to people whispering here and there that Tanaka has arrived.
“good morning!”
I tried greeting an unspecified number of people today as well. Of course, there was no greeting in return.
“Ugh.”
Hwang Dong-soo smiles.
Is it so funny that no one answers me?
As I place the lunch box on the wood stove, my gaze shifts to Hong Tae-soo.
The guy is lying down in the same position as yesterday, wearing the same clothes. He doesn’t seem to know yet that poverty leads to more poverty. It would be good for him to go to college. Well, he’s going to succeed in soccer anyway, so I guess it doesn’t matter.
“Okay, okay- bring me the report cards starting from number one.”
As homeroom time began, it was time to collect the report cards that had been distributed yesterday. I was the first to hand in my report card, following the homeroom teacher’s instructions to start with first place, and then I sat down again.
“Okay, 5th place.”
Surprisingly, the 5th place winner was Hong Tae-soo.
I thought he just slept at his desk all day, but it seems he’s not brainless. Or maybe he studies every night.
“Hong Tae-soo fell again.”
“···yes.”
Looks like your grades have dropped.
“Let’s just get one.”
The guy grabbed the desk and stuck his butt out as if he was ready. The homeroom teacher mercilessly spanked Hong Tae-soo’s butt and said.
“Let’s study, study, study and give it to others? It’s all yours, it’s all yours.”
His face showed that he had a lot to say, but he didn’t say it. However, I could see the resentment in his face. He must be sad and resentful that he can’t just study. He probably doesn’t want to complain about his pride.
Ding-dong-daeng-dong.
Lunch time has come again.
Today, too, I sat down in front of Hong Tae-soo instead of in my seat. The guy who had been lying down raised his head again with an annoyed expression on his face.
Before we knew it, the children of Sanggye-dong had filled the area around Hong Tae-soo.
“Oh my god, what are you really doing?”
The guy looks straight at me and grits his teeth. What could be so upsetting?
“invest.”
“what?”
I answered your question, but it seems difficult to understand.
“What on earth do you want to do?”
He said with a shrug.
“The remaining business.”
“Oh my god, this kid.”
My guy gets angry because he doesn’t understand what I’m saying. It’s not that I don’t understand. But it’s hard to explain it to him in detail. I know him, but he doesn’t know me.
“Whoa, why are you like that? You’re friends.”
Hong Tae-soo frowns at Kim Gyu-il’s dissuasion.
“Friend? Me? With Tanaka?”
Kim Gyu-il said, shaking his head.
“Oh my – do kids who are good at studying even learn how to speak?”
The kids in Sanggye-dong snicker at the guy’s words. If you look closely, the way Taesu speaks seems to be quite similar to mine. It’s a way of speaking that the kids feel is extremely unlucky.
I looked at Hong Tae-soo, tapping my lunch box with a spoon.
“Let’s eat.”
“go away.”
He tells me to get out of here, but my bastard gets up first. I glance at his legs carefully. If he uses his feet in anger, it could be a big deal, but aren’t his feet precious? The feet of a future sports star.
The guy finally left the classroom. I wonder if he’s trying to satisfy his hunger with tap water today. He needs to eat well to grow physically, so it’s a bit disappointing.
“Hey, Jeon Gang.”
At Kim Gyu-il’s call, I turned my head outside the window and looked at him.
“why.”
Kim Seong-hak chuckles and mutters to himself at my answer.
“Heh heh, they do look alike. The way they talk is just-”
Kim Kyu-il nods his head as if agreeing and asks.
“Why are you doing this all of a sudden? Why are you taking care of Taesu?”
I shrugged my shoulders and repeated what I had said to Hong Tae-soo.
“invest.”
“invest?”
“Oh, there is something like that.”
Rain, rain.
Jo Sang-geun eats his lunch box, moving his spoon diligently as if he doesn’t care about the world, whether we’re talking or not. I nod my head in satisfaction at the sight. But since one guy is doing a good job, I think I’ll pay a little more attention to Hong Tae-soo.
I turned my gaze out the window again. I saw Hong Tae-soo at the faucet, hurriedly pouring tap water down his throat. His throat was wide open, but his heart was tightly shut.
Just like I used to be.
**
Daughter.
Now, the sound of the academy door opening feels familiar. Maybe it’s because it’s already the third time.
“You’re here! Assistant Instructor!”
That female employee must be a very unpretentious person. There are many unpretentious people around me. She always speaks politely to me, who is much younger than her, and I could tell from her face that it wasn’t just a professional service mentality. My mother probably didn’t mention that woman as my wife for nothing.
“hello.”
“Today, too, Instructor David and the students arrived first.”
“All right.”
“Twinkle twinkle! I’ll bring it to you right away.”
“yes.”
Because of her, I feel like I’m getting brighter too. Well, I was kind of excited on my way to the academy. I’m really curious about what kind of proposal Choi Tae-woong will come up with.
dripping.
As soon as I knock, the door opens like lightning. David, whose face clearly shows that he has been waiting for me, urges me on.
“Oh my, why are you so late?”
“Oh, I was walking.”
“Hey! Take the bus!”
“Because I’m a poor high school student.”
David frowns.
“Are you some kind of high school student? Your mother will pay all your tuition.”
“I’m receiving a scholarship.”
“Big.”
Choi Tae-woong turns his head, holding back laughter. David, who was speechless at my logical words, shakes his head as if defeated and points to the sofa.
I sat down without saying a word and nodded my head to greet Choi Tae-woong. Seeing me like that, Choi Tae-woong chuckled again.
“Is it cocky or confident?”
“Let’s call it American style.”
It’s a shame that they’re my guys, so is there any need to maintain a humble attitude?
David asked in English, sitting down on the sofa.
“All the way.”
“yes.”
“You still haven’t given us any tips on how to save our academy?”
As I glanced at Choi Tae-woong, I could tell that they both wanted to test me. To be exact, Choi Tae-woong wanted to test me, and David wanted to use Choi Tae-woong to satisfy his own selfish desires. As expected, David is quite a cunning person.
Rather, it is good.
Because there are more places where a person with quick wits is useful than someone without sense or sense. By the way, if I had just asked, they would have told me, but why did they create a place like this? Did David find it difficult for me?
“Ah- that.”
“Ah- That? You know tomorrow is the competition, right?”
“Ah- That?”
Choi Tae-woong shook his head as if he was tired of it. I could tell that he had already gotten the better of me.
“You know you’ll get first place anyway, right?”
“I know that, but is there any other tip that can determine your fate?”
As I nod my head, I feel them both focusing on me.
“First, let’s change the industry and name.”
David lets out a hollow laugh as if his high expectations were in vain.
“What? That’s all you get for a tip? Changing the name of the academy?”
“Do you want to just perish?”
Choi Tae-woong slightly extends his hand to stop David.
“Let’s listen first, hyung.”
David clicks his tongue and nods.
“How long do you think the bald old man will leave the academy?”
The two of them frown suddenly. That’s because the person who comes out of my mouth is the kind of person who would mercilessly strike down anyone who goesssip about them.
“Watch what you say.”
“Anyway, what do you think?”
David shrugs.
“I told you, our academy isn’t that easy. My father’s classmates are doing well.”
David’s confident attitude made me think he had some pretty good connections.
“Do you know the international group?”
David nods his head and Choi Tae-woong looks at me with a very interesting look, unlike before.
“Do you know that things are dangerous there right now?”
Choi Tae-woong opened his eyes wide.
Perhaps he knew, but David tilts his head as if he was hearing it for the first time.
“Why is it so dangerous there? The growth rate is crazy.”
“I irritated the bald old man.”
David glances at Choi Tae-woong and nods. When Choi Tae-woong nods, he looks at me again.
“How do you not know that? I don’t know that either?”
It’s not something you can say you saw in the future.
“Does that matter?”
“Then what’s important?”
“This New York English school is better than the international group?”
The most basic question was asked.
David shakes his head as if to say that it can’t be true.
“How can that be? Can you compare a small village school to a large corporate love group?”
“Then, the director’s connections are better than those of the chairman of the international group?”
David shakes his head again.
“But how can you have the confidence to hang up a sign that says ‘academy’ in front of the current government that has banned academies? What if you happen to pass by here? What if you see it? Are you confident?”
David meets Choi Tae-woong’s eyes and frowns.
“Oh my, I’ve been convinced.”
Choi Tae-woong laughs in vain.
“Ha- It’s so obvious, yet so absurd.”
Yeah, that’s why this school failed.
It was probably due to arrogance and pride. They dared to put up the name of academy in front of the district office. At least in Nowon-gu, the director who was quite popular must have been overconfident.
“Let’s change the name to Talent Development Institute.”
“The name is so bad.”
At David’s words, Choi Tae-woong asks me with a hollow laugh.
“Does that matter now? That’s all there is to it, Assistant Instructor? The solution?”
I shrugged.
“How could that be?”
David asks with a smile.
“Oh! There’s more?”
“It should be properly recognized as a talent training center.”
“how?”
I raised the corners of my lips.
I think I’ll do some leftover business today too.
