The Chairman Who Has No Regrets Episode 72 – A Grand Plan (3)
Actually, there wasn’t much to see.
It wasn’t like installing fancy lighting, it was just a matter of pulling in the power lines, connecting them, and flipping the switch. The switch didn’t need to be directly connected, and since the cord was connected to the wire in the middle, it didn’t require any easy electrical work.
Click.
There is only an on/off switch in the middle of the line. When you press it, a yellow light comes on in the bathroom.
“It’s okay.”
I nodded at the old man’s words.
The bathroom is brightly lit by a single light bulb the size of a baby’s fist. It’s just enough to tell what’s what.
“I wish I had done it earlier… You’ve been doing this for a year?”
A deep regret lingers in the old man’s words.
“I didn’t think about it.”
“Tsk.”
The old man’s face is full of regret.
“Sir, can you bring electricity from my house?”
“No, the route is complicated. The lady is very frugal, so there is a lot of money left over for management fees. So, you don’t have to worry.”
I know that I will receive less tax.
I swallowed my words.
If the old man doesn’t want to feel sorry anymore, you can’t force him to feel guilty. You have to know how to receive before you can give to others. Isn’t it unnatural to only give without knowing how to receive?
“I will use it well.”
The old man nods with a satisfied smile. A look of relief appears on his face.
“Yeah, yeah, guy. Well thought out, by the way. It’s pretty and nice to look at.”
“Is that so?”
The sight of small, colorful light bulbs shining like clotheslines, nodding their heads.
The lifespan of the light bulb may not be long because it is small, but the electricity bill and design are not bad at all. The colorful lights in the strangely dark Sanggye-dong look like the Milky Way.
I bought it after getting a hint from my mother’s constellation story. I wish I had bought it a little earlier, but at least it has some light now.
“Doesnuna Suyeong or Ajumma not go out at night?”
“Why, I go there sometimes.”
“It must be inconvenient because there are no street lights.”
“Wouldn’t there be a better neighborhood for that?”
“Still, it’s dangerous for women to walk at night.”
The old man nods his head.
“Still, it’s fortunate that Sanggye-dong isn’t that bad. There might be a lot of gangsters in other neighborhoods, but it’s not like that here yet.”
Maybe it’s because there are so many locals in this neighborhood.
Or is it because there are comparatively more gangsters in the shantytowns over there than here? Or is it because they are afraid of the police and are hiding?
Anyway, fortunately, the security situation in Sanggye-dong is still not bad. To the point where people don’t really understand the need for street lights.
“The road is rough, so there should be a few streetlights.”
“Then that would be good.”
“Thank you for your hard work, sir.”
“What, it didn’t even take 5 minutes.”
The old man sat down on a bench under a long light that was naturally spread out like a clothesline. I sat next to him, where I could see the sunset of Sanggye-dong well from where I was sitting.
“Are you doing well at work?”
It was a sudden question, but I answered softly.
“I’m trying to do my best.”
“Dude, whatever you do, you’ll be fine.”
“Is that so?”
“Well, I’m so happy because my eyesight seems to be getting better these days.”
“My eyes?”
The old man nodded with an inexplicable smile. What does it mean? His eyesight is getting better.
The old man who was quietly watching the scenery without answering, I knew for sure that he was a native of Sanggye-dong.
“Sir, are you a native of this place?”
“That’s right, your grandfather’s grandfather must have lived here since then.”
“Are there many local people around you?”
“How many are there?”
“Is there anyone who knows anything about real estate?”
“As a native?”
“yes.”
The old man tilts his head.
“It exists… but why is that?”
“I have a question.”
“Don’t you have an uncle?”
“Yes, Mr. Choi?”
“Yes, that guy’s grandfather is from a family that has been running a fortune telling business here since then, so tell me about it.”
“is it so?”
“Yeah, I’ve known your family for a long time too.”
What a strange neighborhood.
Even though you may not know it from the outside, you all have strange abilities. The old man sitting next to me said that my eyes were good and didn’t I seem to have something special about me? He was probably the first person to notice my changes.
The sunset, the lights, and the wall all strangely blend together, and in my opinion, it’s not a bad sight.
Among those many houses.
There are still many houses and lands without owners, because the Republic of Korea has not yet overcome all of its dark history.
That’s why I’m looking for real estate.
“I’ll go in first, sir.”
“Okay, take a rest.”
I bowed my head and opened the front door, entering the house. The slight heat from the kitchen let me know that dinner would soon begin.
Just as I was about to open the door.
“Oh my – is the company having a hard time?”
I paused for a moment at my mother’s worried question.
“I don’t know… He just said he’d give it to me, but I don’t know when he’ll give it to me.”
Even my older sister’s irritated voice.
“Don’t worry too much, Se-yoon. Business is going well at the store these days, so you’ll be able to pay it off soon.”
“I’m sorry to you, sir.”
“Sister, should I talk to Suyeong?”
“Okay, you shouldn’t say that to your friends.”
The atmosphere around here seemed like it was talking about rent.
There was a brief silence in the room. Soon, the younger sister spoke in a bright voice.
“But, unnie, Kang and I are going to the scholarship quiz… so just wait a little bit.”
“That should be used for your tuition.”
“Still… I’ll have some money.”
“Don’t worry about rent, just focus on your studies. The company will take care of things somehow.”
My older sister changed jobs around this time.
It looks like there’s a problem with the company.
Nonpayment of wages.
It may not be much different in the future, but companies used to be really bossy around this time. Of course, it’s not like there weren’t CEOs who were kind and considerate, but isn’t everything about the people?
So that’s the reason my older sister changed jobs. I thought it was simply because of the president of the textile market, but it seems there were quite a few things tangled up.
When buying light bulbs and power cords, he would grumble and sigh, and it seems there was a reason for that.
Rather than improving the quality of life in the short term.
The life of a sister who has to worry about other things.
Choaak.
As I make the sound of water, a quiet silence falls over the room. The sound of water lets me know that I have arrived. My family hasn’t told me much yet.
In the end, it’s true that money is the issue.
Isn’t the bigger problem that the eldest sister doesn’t want to let go of being the eldest?
If my younger sister were to receive a scholarship from David’s training school, our family would receive an additional income equivalent to my older sister’s monthly salary.
“Has the river come?”
“Oh, Mom.”
“What were you doing that made you come home so late?”
“just.”
The older sister comes out of the room with an awkward face and puts on her shoes.
“I’m going to the bathroom.”
My older sister’s shoulders look strangely heavy as she leaves the front door. It would be nice if she could lighten that burden a little, but my older sister doesn’t seem to have the heart to do so yet.
I thought you were just so dependable.
Now I look at my older sister’s slender shoulders.
“Let’s wash up quickly and eat.”
“Oh, Mom.”
While I was washing up in a hurry, my older sister, who had just come back from the bathroom, asked me from behind.
“Did you stop by the hardware store to do that?”
“Oh, it’s dark.”
The older sister hesitated for a moment and then said.
“Well done, my brother.”
It seems like he felt sorry for nagging her.
“It’s nothing.”
The older sister smiles and nods, then goes back into the house.
How much mental anguish must my eldest sister have gone through while preparing for a job change? That’s how the family, who had been watching the mood of the landlord in their past lives, were.
I still have a lot of money in my hands.
Do I have to pay rent in advance?
A brief thought crosses my mind.
**
9 o’clock in the morning.
As I open the door and step outside, Director Baek waves his hand.
“All students-”
“You’re here early?”
He smiles and takes an envelope out of his bosom.
Perhaps in there, there will be a consent form, a contract, and a documentary production plan.
It looks like he definitely wants to stamp it.
Like a racehorse running towards a goal, that person seems to be a die-hard fanatic who clings to one thing when he sees it.
“I’ll check in the car.”
“Okay, let’s do that.”
I got into his car, gave him the address I had given him while delivering the package, and slowly read through the documents.
Neat documents without any problems.
“My mother will stamp it for me later at lunchtime.”
“Okay. No problem?”
“Yes, it’s neat.”
“The place you’re going to is a fortune teller’s house?”
“Yes, I need to find out something.”
“Didn’t you say it was a documentary project?”
“It’s related.”
“I see.”
Something that many people still don’t know about.
There were times when the government didn’t advertise it on a large scale, and even when it did, there were a lot of people who didn’t know about it.
And the benefit of not knowing that was that other people were watching. At least in Sanggye-dong, I was moving with the thought that something like that wouldn’t happen. I thought it could be made into a decent documentary.
“I have a rough idea of the title.”
“What’s the title of the documentary?”
“yes.”
Director Baek looks at me as if he finds it strange.
“I guess there really was a plan?”
“sure.”
“What’s the title?”
I was careful with my words.
“Feel it for yourself, and see if the ratings are good enough.”
He laughs in vain.
A small fortune telling shop that we soon arrived at.
Located near the district office, it looked quiet.
“hello.”
“Are you a river?”
An old man who appears to be the owner recognizes me.
“Yes, that’s right.”
“When is that guy Chang-su getting married?”
It seems like Mr. Choi’s name is Changsu.
“Haha, well.”
“Hey, you rotten bastard. Hurry up and go – tsk tsk.”
A chuckle escapes from his lips at the words that suggest his meticulous personality. Surprisingly, Director Baek doesn’t show much of a reaction to the old man’s attitude and naturally sits down in his seat.
“So, you found a native? Why?”
“I need someone who knows a lot about real estate in Sanggye-dong.”
“Then there’s no one like me. Land? A house? What do you need?”
“Master.”
“Huh?”
Was my answer difficult?
Director Baek and the owner of Bokdeukbang both tilt their heads.
“Because the land without owners and the house without owners need real owners.”
The owner of the fortune teller’s shop suddenly crumpled his face.
“You rascal, if you covet other people’s things, you’ll die young.”
There is nothing I can’t say to you when I am in my prime.
“I have no intention of coveting it.”
“Then why are you looking for it?”
“Because there are many things that require the owner’s permission.”
“That bastard Changsoo sent a strange guy.”
A large map of Sanggye-dong is wedged under the glass of the table we are sitting at.
I said, tapping the spot.
“There are a lot of houses and lands here that have lost their owners, right?”
The owner of the fortune teller nodded obediently.
“There are many, but they are not yours.”
That’s a problem that time will solve.
It wasn’t something I needed right now.
He turned his head and looked at Director Baek.
“Do you know that the country is trying to find owners for houses and lands that are ownerless?”
Director Baek shakes his head.
The owner of Bokdeukbang answers my questions on my behalf.
“It’s not an easy task. It’s so frustrating how civil servants handle their work.”
As someone who works in real estate, he seems to have a lot of knowledge.
“That’s why I came to see you, sir. You said you were a local.”
“You’re saying that you’re going to make me do something that won’t pay me and will only cause me hardship.”
I reached out and pointed to Director Baek and said.
“The money will be given here. As an appearance fee.”
Director Baek laughs as if to ask if that’s why he brought me here.
“Land and house that has lost its owner. Do you know that there is a way for it to become a new owner?”
Director Baek shakes his head as if he didn’t know.
“The title of the first documentary should be something like Finding My Home.”
Director Baek, blinking, asked.
“The first one? So there’s a second one too?”
I nodded.
Because finding my home is just the beginning.
“Yes.”
A grand plan.
