Episode 15. I’ll Break Down the Gates
The Joseon army came down to the space secured by Dalcheon, and formed a defensive wall like an iron wall, shoulder to shoulder. Peng Baesu pushed forward with force, and long spears stabbed the enemy through the gaps. Janggeomsu dealt with the enemies who broke through the defensive wall.
The Joseon army, which had landed in a space of five or six jang, advanced along the wall and expanded the space. The Joseon army, which had filled the cloud and advanced, was a whopping 500. When the archers advanced, the formation of the cavalry, long spearmen, long swordmen, and archers was formed just like the usual training phalanx. They took over the top of the wall, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind. Dalcheon, who took a breath, planted the flag of occupation.
Who gave the order? The Gyeongsan County army came up, and even the central and rear armies lined up tightly behind the two clouds.
It was a battlefield where no matter how much you hit with a shallow ladder, it would not work. Two hours after the battle began, casualties continued to pile up, but one place was breached. The Joseon army that crossed first established a bridgehead, took control of a corner of the wall, and expanded the area.
Dalcheon, who had broken through the iron wall of defense with his martial arts, now commanded the army. And he went toward the gate tower that he had initially half-destroyed. Looking at the other friendly units lined up behind him, he said that it was important to open up space rather than defend it now. So he ordered some to go down the wall and some to advance to the other side. And he placed archers on the inside of the wall controlled by the Joseon army to protect the soldiers who had gone down.
When they learned that the wall had been breached, many reinforcements rushed in, but more Joseon soldiers came over. The county magistrate came over late and searched for Bijang.
“Where is the hundred spleen?”
“Over there.”
Here, the area below the castle walls is clearly visible. A large group of troops can be seen advancing inside the castle. The angry waves crash against the rocks as they advance. The battle formations, curved like the wings of a goose, advance while destroying the scattered enemies.
“ah!”
The magistrate was praising him, and Dalcheon came running, not knowing when he would appear.
“Please stay here and clear the way for our allies coming up from behind.”
“road?”
“The sooner you get over there, the less casualties our forces will suffer. Please direct the traffic.”
“Traffic control.”
Yes, the five-column procession coming over the two ridges was almost at a standstill. The wall, which was almost as wide, was also blocked.
“Over there, we need to open it up there.”
Dalcheon pointed to the procession that had stopped for no reason.
“I see.”
“Please drop some of them here.”
He pointed to the area just below the castle wall that Dalcheon had crossed.
“My legs are going to break!”
“If you hold onto the wall with both arms, stretch your legs, and then drop slightly, you won’t get hurt.”
Dalcheon ordered one of his soldiers to go down like that.
“It would have been better to put up a ladder.”
“That’s fine too. Send your troops to where the fighting is fierce.”
“Okay! But what about you?”
“There is a limit to how many troops we can push here. We will break down the gate.”
“Oh.”
Dalcheon pointed to the South Gate with the sword he was holding. A battle was in full swing between the Joseon army on the wall that had advanced toward the South Gate and the Japanese pirates who were clinging to the wall.
“Please. And I wish you good luck.”
“Loyalty.”
Dalcheon ran towards the south gate.

The county magistrate came to his senses late and began to direct traffic. He blew his whistle to indicate the direction of the soldiers coming over. He sent a messenger to the place where the advance had stopped and had them remove the obstacle. As he was shouting and directing the traffic, a defense officer appeared in front of him.
“Oh, it’s you.”
“Loyalty! The deployment of friendly forces was delayed.”
“The battle?”
The magistrate pointed far below the castle walls where Dalcheon had advanced and Bijang was fighting.
“They’re trying to break down the south gate. They can deploy more troops quickly.”
“and?”
“They are heading towards the center of this castle. It is blocked there, so our forces cannot secure a numerical advantage, and it is becoming a melee.”
“Still, we’re winning.”
“Yes.”
“Wow, you’re amazing.”
“thank you.”
“Where should we go?”
The magistrate looked at the direction where the spleen was and the direction where Dalcheon was fighting. It is hard to tell which is more important. However, it is necessary to make a judgment. When judgment is needed, when there are commanders who do not judge that there is insufficient information or data, the battle can easily lead to disaster. Fortunately, the magistrate pointed to the south gate where Dalcheon had advanced, not the direction of the spleen.
“If we open the South Gate, we can deploy more troops faster.”
“I see.”
The left-wing defense officer, Hwang Hyeong, acknowledged the magistrate’s judgment.
“Weren’t you a civil servant?”
“Yes. I have no martial arts skills.”
It is not that it is lacking, but that it is completely absent. Hwang Hyung was impressed by the magistrate’s honesty.
“Thanks to a civil servant who has no martial arts skills, I was able to climb over the wall. I will not let your achievements in this matter go unnoticed.”
“Loyalty.”
Hwang Hyung ordered the soldiers coming over to advance toward the South Gate. It was different from the sound of the rooster crowing at Baek Sa Ban. With a voice like thunder, he ordered the soldiers to immediately run to the South Gate, and then he himself jumped down the wall and advanced toward the South Gate.
* * *
The southern gate was partially destroyed by the initial attack. That is why the Japanese army deployed the most troops there. Hundreds of soldiers were waiting in the wide space inside the town castle, and they continued to send the soldiers who were lined up tightly on the stairs up the castle wall. That was the reason why the Joseon army that ran up the castle wall could not advance. The Japanese army sent troops even though they clearly saw that they would die in front of them.
Dalcheon, who had been sweeping away the enemy soldiers on the wall in the vanguard, shook his head. Even if he killed all the enemy soldiers who were endlessly advancing, it didn’t seem like the battle would end. Furthermore, the width of the wall was fixed, so in the place where a close battle took place, the same number of soldiers would have to face each other. It was a terrain where it was impossible to secure an advantage in troops at the point of contact.
Dalcheon jumped down from the wall and led some of the troops running toward the center toward the South Gate. He made the Joseon troops standing densely on the wall jump down to supplement his troops, and then he advanced toward the South Gate. The Japanese troops waiting behind the South Gate rushed toward Dalcheon.
“Form your ranks. Get going!”
At Dalcheon’s command, the men lined up in the order of Peng Baesu, Jang Changsu, Jang Geomsu, and Archers. While the long line was being formed, the enemy army ran like crazy, but Dalcheon did not hurry. The battle formation was more important than close combat.
“Pengbaesu, Jangchangsu, Janggeomsu, sit down!”
At Dalcheon’s command, the three rows in front sat down. Peng Baesu sat down, but the shield remained standing.
“Archers, sit down first row!”
As the first row of archers sat down, the second row, who had noticed what was going on, stood close to them. This was a formation they had often practiced.
“Pour everything you have into it. Fire!”
The archers in the second row poured their arrows at the enemy who was running. The ones who were running about fifty steps away fell down. At the same time, he always emphasized the importance of concentrated fire, and practiced while pulling empty bows. It was like pulling empty bowstrings, but it seemed like a joke. Many people laughed and followed along for fun, and now the results were showing. Dozens of people who were running fell down at once, and those who were following behind fell helplessly.
“Fire again!”
Dalcheon encouraged the archers. A hundred or so arrows flew, knocking down those who had jumped out unprepared. It was a pity that there were no cavalry, but they could not climb over the wall with words. Dalcheon advanced in a single formation.
“All troops advance 20 steps forward. Peng Baesu and Jang Changsu advance first!”
The first two rows ran twenty paces, supported by the archers’ covering fire.
“Janggeomsu and archer, advance 20 steps forward.”
“advance!”
“advance!”
“advance!”
At that time, they encountered enemy troops. The troops that had emerged from behind the South Gate charged toward the Joseon army.
“Stop the swelling! Stab Jang Chang-soo!”
“Stab!”
“Stab!”
“Stab!”
The long swordsman who was advancing forward was deployed.
“Janggeomsu, forward!”
“from now on!”
“from now on!”
“from now on!”
Dalcheon shouted from behind.
“For the rest, surround the enemy’s flanks on the left and right!”
I don’t even know where the army is. As we were advancing, I asked the person following me. A man in his 40s wearing a silver armor approached and accepted.
“I will take a detour!”
“Please.”
A group of troops turned to the left of Iljajin. Dalcheon made another request to the remaining men. They were not my subordinates, so I could not give them orders, but the soldiers rushed in at the clearly visible battle situation. Dalcheon ran and jumped into Iljajin’s weak spot.
They were small creatures who would fall helplessly after being impaled on a long spear, but their momentum when they charged was fierce and sharp. They ran at a fast pace, not sparing their lives for a single sword strike.
Those who avoided Jang Chang-soo’s thrusts struck Pang Bae-soo’s shield. Pang Bae-soo blocked them and stabbed them with his short sword. At that unfortunate moment, Jang Geom-soo quickly closed the gap and ran to block the enemies.
“Block and stab! Stab Jang Chang-soo!”
Blocking and stabbing failed to break through the line. Several people broke through from two directions, but were knocked down by the blades of the long swords that rushed toward them. They screamed like dogs and struck fiercely, but that was the end of it. They were men who had no follow-up. After the blow that was struck with all their might, there were too many weak points behind the attack. I barely managed to block the attack that really disregarded life. Dalcheon rushed in and instantly cut down one area, pushed through the gap between the bulging water, and advanced forward to cut down the enemy that was rushing toward him.
As the dozens of men who had advanced first fell, the commander sent another group in second.
“charge!”
Dalcheon’s mouth was ripped open as he met the eyes of the Japanese general who was making a noise like someone was cutting off a chicken’s neck. Fortunately, the friendly forces who had turned left and right attacked, making it easier to block the enemy’s charge.
“All troops, advance 20 steps!”
“20 steps forward!”
“20 steps forward!”
“20 steps forward!”
“20 steps forward!”
As the order was passed to the side, the Iljajin advanced forward. Dalcheon left the command to his fellow general.
“Please take charge of the conducting, old man.”
“why?”
“I’ll catch that guy.”
Then he pointed to a man with a bald head. A man who seemed to be an attendant was holding a helmet next to him, and two warriors with their faces covered by visors were guarding on the left and right.
“I can’t do it alone.”
“Haha.”
“… … .”
“Advance 5 steps at a time, then 10 steps at a time, making sure the formation doesn’t break down.”
“What if it collapses?”
“If it collapses, we switch to a quake-proof system.”
“Are you a jinjin?”
“Yes. It’s the formation I practiced the most.”
“All right.”
Dalcheon looked into the eyes of his fellow officer and asked, then turned around.
“Archers! Fire three shots at the enemy general!”
“Three shots!”
“Three shots!”
“Three shots!”
A volley of arrows flew toward the leader. The rider behind him flew first. Those kneeling before the general raised their shields and blocked the way. When the first, second, and third rounds were over, Iljajin advanced and Dalcheon stepped forward. A few arrows fired by a tall Japanese archer with a bow flew toward him. A man dodged the arrows, fluttering like a scarecrow in the wind.
“Ta-ha-ha.”
Dalcheon crossed his legs and approached Peng Baesu as if flying. The spearmen on both sides approached while swinging their unusually long spears. Dalcheon swung his sword left and right. He neither blocked nor pushed away. The spearhead was cut off by the swift sword swing. The spearhead was made of wood, but it was not easily cut because it was made of a special type of wood. The surprised spearmen hurriedly pulled their bodies out.
He struck the shield with his might, and the large shield was broken in two. Those who had been holding the shield to block it were startled and dodged to the side.
Two sword-wielding escorts ran out, leaving gaps to the left and right. They raised their swords sharply next to their faces and then swung them down. It was called a double-edged sword. They swung down with all their might, disregarding any subsequent defense.
Another guy lowered his sword to the side and drew a horizontal line. The problem is those who don’t think about their future lives. If you get caught, you’ll get what you want, but if you avoid or block, there’s no future life.
