Damn the World, Ride a Submarine - Chapter 4

Episode 4 – Corsica
When I got off the plane, I was greeted by a rush of fresh air. I could feel myself getting more and more excited.
A beautiful coastal city on the Adriatic coast. Ancona was even more beautiful than it looked in the picture.
During the drive from the airport to the shipyard, I could feel the many historic buildings and vibrant local atmosphere.
When we reached the coast, the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea were shimmering with glittering sunbeams.
An exclamation flowed from Team Leader Hyeon Min-seong’s mouth after seeing the beautiful scenery.
“Wow~”
On the gently rolling sea, ships large and small were swaying peacefully. The cliffs and green hills surrounding the city were enough to create a feeling of majesty.
Arrived at the Ferretti Group shipyard.
A small welcome ceremony was prepared. I could sense a certain sense of pride in craftsmanship from Ferretti’s engineers.
Sensing my impatience,
They guided us to my boat Sonyatore.
Sognatóre was elegantly engraved on the smooth hull between the dazzling sunlight and the blue sea.
When I saw that elegant curve, I realized why the Latin and French words for pear were feminine nouns.
Boarded the Sonatore.
I checked the master cabin that met my requirements and the amenities with cutting-edge technology. I like it. I felt that my choice was not wrong.
I took over technical details from Ferretti engineers and conducted a test drive with Captain Kim Chang-gi.
The sight of gentle waves crashing against the ship’s hull, coupled with the beauty of the Adriatic Sea, made my heart swell.
A real gift I give to myself. It’s time to enjoy life with Sonyatore and prepare for the times to come.
Now all that remains is to board the Sonatore and return to Korea. As much preparation as possible was needed here in Ancona.
“Captain. “How long will it take to get from here to Korea?”
“hmm. If you plan only on the map, it will take 3 to 4 months. You will need to take into account weather conditions and extended schedules at ports of call.”
“okay. “We need to pay attention to distribution.”
“yes. Yes”
Instead of going straight to the shortest distance. After passing through Corsica, I passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and took pictures of the Atlantic Ocean. A plan was made to pass through the Mediterranean Sea and through the Suez Canal.
Supplies for departure were entrusted to Captain Kim Chang-gi, and the crew members previously selected in Korea were brought here to Ancona.
Navigator Minki Ahn, a deckhand, chief engineer Min Kim, and secretary Hyein Lee departed from Korea for Ancona, Italy.
To prepare for any emergency, Anthony, an engineer at Ferretti, decided to join the trip.
To ensure a comfortable trip, we hired a local chef who can cook a variety of dishes, and we also hired two stewardesses for housekeeping.
…
All preparations have been completed.
The first port of call was the French island of Corsica, even if it meant going back a bit.
The Sonatore sailed from Ancona.
If you fly directly to Corsica Island, you could travel 400 nautical miles and take 40 hours even if you maintain an average cruising speed of 10 knots.
Instead of rushing, I decided to sail slowly while admiring the coastline.
The coastline of the Adriatic Sea was picturesque. I went through Croatia, Montenegro, and Albania.
It left the Adriatic Sea and entered the Mediterranean Sea.
I was just about to think I was getting used to the ship. Captain Kim Chang-gi opened his mouth.
“CEO, let’s go fishing.”
“… I’ve never done it before”
“Don’t worry for a moment, I’ve prepared everything. When will you go fishing in the Mediterranean again? “There couldn’t be a more perfect moment to start fishing.”
He patiently explained the differences between baits and how to properly cast a fishing rod. It was very interesting to learn some new mechanics.
“Now, fishing is an art of waiting and timing. “If you have the CEO’s sense, you will learn quickly.”
While I was fishing for the first time in my life, Captain Kim Chang-gi was telling a story about a huge bluefin tuna he once caught off the coast of Spain.
“Oh! “There is something.”
I felt something heavy and elastic in my hand. I realized that this is the taste that anglers talk about.
“Wind slowly while maintaining tension on the line.”
“Like this?”
“Haha… yes. It’s easier if you pull the fishing rod in like this, give it some slack, and then push it forward and reel it in.”
The captain seems to be waiting for me to find out for myself.
He stood next to me and kept making cheesy comments that I didn’t know if he was nagging or encouraging.
Finally, an unknown fish stuck its head out of the water.
“Wow! “Try using a little more force.”
“oh! “It’s mahi-mahi.”
“yes?”
“This is his name. In Korean, we call it Mansaegi.”
It was a pretty big guy.
It was an ugly, but unrealistically pretty fish, larger than an adult’s forearm, with green scales that sparkled in the sunlight.
Mahi Mahi, who showed his first taste of fishing, was released with gratitude.
Fishing continued.
I caught another mahi mahi, and the captain also caught a dentex, a bluefin tuna, and a mahi mahi. He wasn’t a braggart.
Captain Kim Chang-gi immediately started making raw bluefin tuna, and navigator An Min-gi brought out soju from somewhere.
“Wow, I got it too, haha.”
The men’s time is ripe with the Mediterranean sunset.
In the middle of the Mediterranean
Freshly caught tuna sashimi, soju flown in from Korea, and the red-tinged sky and sea came together.
The Italian chef who was watching this brought a fish steak made with mahi mahi. It was my first time trying it, but it tasted pretty good.
Since not everyone could get drunk, Mate Ahn Min-gi left and the captain and I drank until we got drunk.
The ship was traveling through Greece and Sicily and along the southern coast of Italy.
…
We were heading to Corsica after passing through Sardinia.
We decided to call at Bastio, Corsica.
Although I needed supplies and rest, I also wanted to set foot in Corsica, Napoleon’s hometown, even just for a moment.
After calling at Bastio, we went straight to Ajaccio. He stood in front of a statue of Napoleon and thought about him for a moment.
Sonyatore!
A dreamer who never gave up on his dreams. Napoleon’s genius and bold practice made his dream a reality.
Maybe he is.
He may have known that his genius could not defy fate. It’s just that he couldn’t admit that his luck had run out.
Suddenly, I thought I should take care of other things I had put off. She hurried back to the ship that called at Bastio.
“Secretary Lee”
“Yes, representative”
“Please give me a summary of the main reports. “Please give me a report summarizing major news at home and abroad.”
“all right. Should we separate the science and climate issues?”
“Yes. Please.
Also, please tell the OSLAM investment team leader to increase the proportion of dollar holdings. “Please tell us to keep a close eye on U.S. interest rates.”
“yes. CEO”
…
The ship continued its voyage.
We left Bastio in Corsica and headed to the Strait of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco.
The road leading from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The Strait of Gibraltar reminded me of German U-boats during World War II.
Since the ocean current is heading toward the Atlantic Ocean, the current in the deep sea will be in the opposite direction. At that time, I imagined the worries of the U-boat captain heading into the Mediterranean.
When my thoughts reached the U-boat, I felt like I had to put into practice what I had been vaguely thinking about.
The ark for the final survival
I always thought it was a submarine.
However, I hesitated because it is not something that can be made simply with money. It may take several years.
The time has come when dreams should turn into concrete plans, and plans should turn into action.
Considering habitability, it would have to be at least 4,000 tons. The submarine recently delivered to the Republic of Korea Navy weighs around 3,000 tons, so it is a larger project than that.
Even excluding armament for a conventional submarine, it would cost close to 1 trillion won. If you consider auxiliary facilities and crew, you will likely have to invest a significant portion of your wealth.
But if
If the world were to end, my money in numbers would have no meaning.
While I was lost in my thoughts, this secretary brought me a report summarizing domestic and international news.
The most notable article was that China had succeeded in artificial rain and was implementing it on a large scale.
Hundreds of rockets and cannons were being fired into the clouds with the goal of causing rain. It was an article about artificially creating clouds.
When I thought that humans had come to manipulate the weather, I suddenly got goosebumps.
The news was all about global warming, abnormal climate, war, gun violence, drugs, etc., making us feel the atmosphere of the end of the century.
