Damn the World, Ride a Submarine - Chapter 59

Episode 59 – Explosion
The T-62 D tank, a huge piece of metal that had been bombarded with seven RPG rockets, became silent as if dead.
Team Charlie was busy reorganizing the battle line.
Team member Charlie, who fired RPG 7 on the road and was blown away by the impact of the tank’s shelling, was lying on the ground groaning.
Two team members who discovered it were holding the injured person by both shoulder straps and dragging him into the building.
Sporadic shooting by the enemy continued.
It was then. The radio call I had been waiting for came.
– Chijijijik
-Command. S Alpha. Explosives set, Ready for engagement. Awaiting orders. Over.
– (Command headquarters. This is S Alpha. Explosives installed, ready for engagement, waiting for orders. That’s it.)
The welcome radio call continued again.
– this is S Bravo. Explosives set, awaiting orders. Over.
– (This is S Bravo. Explosives installed. Waiting for orders. That’s it.)
Now all that remains is the safe expulsion of all members.
– Command to all SBU units. Cover Charlie’s retreat, northeast of M-8. Over.
– (All SBU, northeast of M-8 road, cover Team Charlie’s retreat. Above)
At this time, OSS’s Alpha Team fired eight RPG 7 rockets at the approaching armored vehicle, neutralizing it.
– OSS Bravo. Command. Support Alpha Team’s retreat. Over.
– (OSS Bravo. This is headquarters, support Alpha Team’s retreat. That’s it.)
As the covering fire of SBU Alpha Unit began. Charlie’s team was boarding the bus carrying the injured person.
The OSS Alpha Team was retreating towards the ARK on foot, alternately providing covering fire and expulsion as Bravo Team came to support them.
Director Kim Jun-myeong was driving an SUV to bring the injured members of Alpha Team first. Team Charlie also drove the bus and arrived at the dock where the ARK was docked.
I ordered that the injured be evacuated first to the Lee Hoi-young using a RIP boat.
All prepared attack drone operators were instructed to autonomously cover the retreating troops.
Team Charlie prepared covering fire from the sandbag cover that Director Kim Jun-myeong had made on the deck of the ARK.
The SBU’s Alpha Unit was also ordered to retreat.
The attack drone continued to drop HE mortar shells and smoke incendiary bombs to force each unit to retreat. Everywhere in the Sevmash shipyard was filled with heavy drinking and smoke.
And with the OSS Alpha Team and Bravo Team exiting, we started to see things coming.
Supporting fire continued from Team Charlie, who was waiting on the deck of the ARK to obtain the code for the evacuation unit.
Soon, all OSS and SBU units boarded the ARK deck. Suppressive fire from all units followed.
The grounds of the Sevmash Shipyard were filled with the explosion of bullets and flashes of light.
The nuclear-powered submarine ARK unloaded from the dock very slowly.
A huge nuclear-powered submarine turned its head towards the exit towards the sea. It felt so slow because of its size.
The Russian 667th Marine Regiment noticed changes in the front line. I got back into the truck and was rushing to the dock at the shipyard.
Without fail, HE 60mm mortar rounds from Revolver 860 fell on the stopped truck.
By the time the ARK left the port, it was confirmed that the attack drone’s shells had run out.
Enemy shooting was still continuing.
I ordered a suicide crash of an attack drone. The battery was running low anyway.
Seven iron balls weighing nearly 40 kg were flying all over the shipyard, hitting the backs of Russian soldiers.
Even though it did not inflict fatal wounds, it did enough to hinder the enemy’s fire.
By the time the attack drone’s cameras were turning off one by one, the ARK had completely escaped Severodvinsk.
On the deck of the ARK, members of the Ukrainian Alpha unit could be seen pacing around anxiously. Their eyes were a mixture of anticipation and anxiety.
It was waiting for an explosion.
The short sun was quickly setting and the polar night was about to begin again.
– Kugugoogung Kugoogung Kukugoogung Kugoogung Kugoogung
The series of explosions originating from Severodvinsk seemed to shake the calm waters. The rising pillar of fire was like a congratulatory gun announcing victory.
Flames were thawing the frozen frozen ground.
That flame seemed to be in the hearts of Ukrainian soldiers as well. They cheered and embraced each other on the deck of the ARK.
However, 16 Ukrainian soldiers completely destroyed countless Russian warships, including cruisers and destroyers, and Russia’s largest shipyard.
The impact of the front line will not be significant. It was a painful blow that came with a big warning to Russia. As a bonus, the morale of the Ukrainian military and even the people will increase significantly.
OSS agents were also jumping up and down the deck of the ARK submarine together, embracing them for the first time.
In this way, the polar night in the North Sea deepened.
I made sure all operational personnel opened the hatches of the ARK and entered the submarine and retrieved the reconnaissance drone.
And the two steel submarines began diving into the deep sea again.
…
Ship number 9, which was waiting in the Norwegian Sea, was called to the Barents Sea for sea supply. ARK also had them come there.
There were no casualties in Operation Fury, but there were many major and minor injuries.
Sergeant Jang Min-seong of the Charlie Team, who was blown away by the explosion of a T-62 D tank gun grenade, was seriously injured.
Chef Hyeon Min-seong, who is also a doctor, treated the patient well, so his life was not in danger.
…
The Lee Hoe-young continued diving, reached a certain point in the Barents Sea, and surfaced for maritime airlift.
I opened the hatch before anyone else and climbed onto the submarine bridge.
The cold sea breeze seemed to clear my mind.
It was difficult to touch the bridge railing. It felt like my hands would stick together if I touched them. The cold like a knife cut into my collar.
Still, I found some cigarettes. Even before I smoked that cigarette, there was a mixture of surprise and fear.
Above my gaze was the ARK, which arrived first and surfaced.
It had the appearance of a massive Typhoon-class nuclear-powered submarine. Ship number 9 also seemed to have spotted us from afar.
and
My eyes fell on the clouds covering the entire sky. I followed it and where my eyes stopped was Iceland’s Raki (Rakagigar).
The Laki volcano still could not stop erupting. Heading west, the cloud of volcanic ash and sulfur dioxide gas reached the stratosphere via the jet stream and covered the entire sky.
It was as if the Earth was under a hazy umbrella, or rather a huge tent.
‘Is this our first winter?’
…
The 9th ship was placed in the middle to provide maritime airlift and transport of wounded to two submarines at the same time. The ROKS Lee Hoe-young and the ARK were shown sailing side by side.
Sergeant Jang Min-seong, who was most seriously injured in the battle, was the first to receive medical equipment and supplies.
I briefly thought about transferring it to ship number 9. She followed the opinion of head chef Hyeon Min-seong that stability was more important than putting a strain on patients with maritime air supply.
Petty Officer Jang Min-seong decided to move to ship number 9 at the next supply point for evacuation.
ARK was also supplied with food and supplies at the same time.
And I sent all my personal belongings to the ARK.
I exchanged greetings with the crew members including Colonel Choi Eun-seok. Everyone was surprised.
Although my mind kept thinking of moving straight to the ARK. Others did not.
As I was saying the last greeting, I felt a certain emotion that made me cry.
I looked around at each of the crew members of the Lee Hoe-young ship. Some crew members had moist eyes.
“We will all meet again at Tawi-Tawi Sinheung Camp. haha”
I tried my best to pretend to be calm and spit out a single word. And then I looked at Colonel Choi Eun-seok.
“Colonel!”
“Yes, Captain.”
“As of now, the captain of the Lee Hoi-young is Captain Choi Eun-seok.”
“Yes, captain, no, representative…”
I patted the hull of the Lee Hoe-young, just as Captain Choi Eun-seok did when he first talked about submarines.
“Captain! Please take care of this friend.”
“… Yes, representative.”
These were people I would meet again in two months at most, and even though I was seeing Lee Hoi-young again, I could feel my emotions overflowing.
If I waited any longer, I felt like I would burst into tears.
Saying goodbye to them with a salute. Immediately, I put my body on the patient transport tray and went over to ship number 9.
I stayed on ship number 9 for a short time, exchanging greetings with sailors under Colonel Shin Hee-rip. She also had a brief conversation with Hyein and exchanged looks filled with regret.
Leaving them behind, get back on the wire. Went over to ARK.
Director Kim Jun-myeong, Lieutenant Colonel Park Seo-joon, and Vice President Jin Min-gyu welcomed me warmly.
After saying hello to the people on ship number 9 and giving a heavy grand ship salute, I opened the hatch and entered the ARK ship.
First, I went to the briefing room of the ARK with Director Kim Jun-myeong and Vice President Jin Min-gyu. It was to meet the OSS operations team and members of the Alpha Unit of the Ukrainian Security Service.
As I opened the door and entered, I heard cheering.
– Wow! Wow!
– Hwiik~ Hwiik hwiik~
When Director Kim Jun-myeong organized the crowd, all eyes were on me. He seemed to be waiting for a word.
“OSS operations team and Ukrainian Alpha Unit…”
Vice President Jin Min-gyu was next to me and interpreted word by word.
“The fighters of the two nations operated with different yet identical objectives. “I trusted my colleagues and I trusted my friends.”
While Vice President Jin’s interpretation continued. I could feel everyone’s eyes shining.
“That is why we were able to achieve a complete operation without a single casualty.”
I turned my head and made eye contact with each person as I spoke.
When their eyes met, they all nodded and expressed their support.
“So, we, OSS and South Korea were able to find the submarine. By completely blowing up Severodvinsk, we were able to send a strong warning to Russia about Ukraine.”
– Wow~
– Hwiik~ Hwiik~
Once again, cheers and whistles filled the briefing room. We enjoyed the joy together for a while and then left our final words.
“The time I spent with you will be recorded in my diary as a moment of glory.”
And the OSS operations team was promised special leave and bonuses upon their return to Tawi-Tawi.
It was also conveyed that the Ukrainian Alpha Unit would be somewhere in the sea between Denmark and England with the help of the German Navy to help them return home.
(It would have been a quick route to take the ARK to the Baltic Sea and hand it over to the Polish Navy, but due to the complexity of passing through the Denmark Strait and cooperation issues with the NATO Navy, a different route was chosen.)
While everyone is sharing joy with each other. A member of the OSS Charlie team walked up to me.
“CEO. “Take this.”
