IRS
“Are you saying there’s really nothing? Nothing?”
“I’ve checked it more than ten times already. This is the cleanest book I’ve ever had since I joined the IRS.”
The IRS agents looked at each other. The financial statements were piled up like a mountain.
Hitler didn’t hide anything.
Rather, there is so much information provided that it is difficult to review.
Dozens of agents searched for days, but found no problems.
“It’s like you made a deal with the devil. I did find a few mistakes in the entries, but they were due to overpayment of taxes.”
“Then you’re saying we have to give you a refund?”
All the agents snickered.
After a tax audit of the company, they actually give refunds.
It was one of the few times that happened in the United States, or even in the entire history of capitalism.
“What does the Minister say?”
“He said to keep checking. He said something would come out.”
“Tell them to come and see for themselves. These perverts have even complied with dead-end tax laws.”
One agent sighed deeply.
They followed the tax laws more strictly than individual IRS agents.
“If we take issue with the Hitler Company, then all other American companies will be punished.”
Unofficial pressure was already coming from Morgan and other companies.
Their intentions were clear.
[We must not let the sparks fly to us!]
The IRS was the only one stuck between the government and corporations.
“What are you going to do now?”
“What should I do? I should just publish it as is. Have you seen the IRS play with numbers?”
“But the President…”
“The presidency is already over. What can we do when the House of Representatives is talking about impeachment? Why ruin your life by chasing a dead duck?”
“…”
Cigarette smoke filled the conference room.
“Tell Treasury Secretary Mellon that too. He said the IRS will proceed accordingly.”
Ministers and presidents come and go according to elections.
But the ones who remain in the end are the bureaucrats.
“If we hesitate any longer, we too will all be dragged to the guillotine.”

Washington DC
White House
“Your Majesty, the Hitler issue should be buried and put behind us now. Just by exposing the corruption within the White House…”
“I know, Coolidge. Damn it! I know.”
Harding answered, pacing around the office.
A flock of sheep was visible outside the window.
A cry that seemed to mock him.
“Get rid of those damn sheep! If I keep looking at them, I’ll go crazy!”
“…All right.”
Coolidge tried to suppress a sigh.
He too had some inkling of the corruption of the Harding gang and the Ohio gang.
‘But I didn’t know it would be this big…’
Most of the government ministers, with the exception of a few, including him and Hoover, were involved in corruption.
‘If only I had the power, things would have been better.’
The office of Vice President is virtually an honorary position.
There wasn’t much Coolidge could do as vice president.
“That guy Roosevelt has been collecting information like crazy ever since he lost the election. He’s been trying to undermine me somehow… right?”
“Most of the information revealed in the media turned out to be true.”
Coolidge spoke in his usual dry tone.
“We must take action immediately. Dismiss all the ministers involved in the suspicions and issue a public apology. That is the only way to survive.”
“You don’t mind one or two, but are you telling me to kick out dozens? The friends who helped me become president?”
“They are all those who took advantage of Your Majesty.”
Coolidge avoided Harding’s gaze.
In fact, there was a bigger problem.
It’s Harding himself.
‘Because he had an affair with a married woman and even touched his friend’s daughter.’
He even had an illegitimate child with his friend’s daughter.
As these facts came to light, Harding’s authority fell to rock bottom.
“The IRS, have you heard anything from Mellon yet? If we can find a problem with Hitler Company, we can turn public attention to that.”
Harding muttered, his hands shaking. He tried to pick up his cigar, but it fell through his fingers.
“I think it would be better not to get your hopes up. The finance minister said there was no tax evasion that had been discovered at the moment…”
As Coolidge was speaking, his secretary opened the door and came in.
“What’s going on?”
“Your Excellency, the Macmillan delegation has arrived. We would like to inform you that the House has passed the Articles of Impeachment and that we are proceeding accordingly…”
The secretary was left speechless.
The president fell to the side of the table with a thud.
“Your Majesty?! Your Majesty!”
Coolidge shouted at the guards outside the door.
“Call the doctor immediately! His Majesty has collapsed!”

New York
Hitler Company
“President Harding suffered a heart attack?”
“I heard he was shocked by the impeachment. I don’t think he’s dead yet. If the tax investigation announcement is delayed like this…”
“The IRS can’t delay the announcement any longer. If public pressure increases, it will create more controversy.”
I looked at Joseph Kennedy and said, “There are only two of us in the conference room.
Richter went on vacation for a few days.
‘I insisted on staying, but…’
I felt like I would collapse if I was made to work any more.
I’ve already contacted my fiancée, so she’ll take care of it.
“Thanks to you, Roosevelt has become a hero of the Democratic Party. If he does well, he might even run for governor of New York.”
Joseph smiled and sighed.
“How on earth did you get your hands on all that corrupt information? Your intelligence network is really unfathomable. Of course you did some background checks on me, too.”
“Well, let’s just say that there is no weapon as powerful as information.”
It’s a lot easier if you know what to look for. The corruption of the Harding administration was well known.
It’s also a perfect comparison.
If I had just stayed still, it wouldn’t have exploded so quickly.
Harding also dug his own grave.
“I don’t think the IRS expected us to be this clean. They must have been quite taken aback.”
How many companies are fanatically obsessed with paying taxes?
“Then what do you think will happen to you, Adolf? It seems like it will be difficult for President Harding to remain in power.”
“If I were Harding, I would have fired all the ministers by now and made a public apology.”
Then, he would effectively become a lame duck, but at least he would be able to keep his presidency.
Bill Clinton was impeached due to a sex scandal, but he kept his position.
In Harding’s case, although the corruption of his associates was severe, he himself did not receive much money.
He is literally a puppet.
Impeachment proceedings, if it were a trial, would be unlikely to lead to actual impeachment.
He’ll resign of his own accord, like Nixon.
“But it’s already too late. When the results of my tax audit are announced…”
An administration tainted by corruption.
On the contrary, Hitler Company paid taxes down to the last penny.
How will the public react when the results of the survey are released?
“Public opinion will explode that the tax investigation was conducted to hide their corruption. Then it will be difficult to handle the situation any longer.”
Harding’s sudden death has raised many questions in history.
While visiting Alaska, Harding collapses from symptoms of ptomaine poisoning.
He eventually died of a stroke a few weeks later.
There were also rumors that he committed suicide after learning of the corruption of his close associates or that he suffered a heart attack due to shock.
Coolidge assumed the presidency shortly thereafter.
“If Harding resigns and Coolidge takes over the White House, this kind of nonsense won’t happen.”
“Then we’ve killed three birds with one stone.”
Kennedy smiled faintly.
“It was Roosevelt who made the corruption data public, not us. Why should the Republicans blame us?”
“The tax investigation has been successfully concluded and my relationship with Roosevelt has also been strengthened.”
Joseph was right.
You really killed three birds with one stone.
They made Roosevelt a hero and removed the danger factor called Harding.
He faced the tax investigation head-on and even gained public support.
“But there are still rabbits left.”
“You’re talking about the KKK.”
“Yes, and the forces behind it. The KKK couldn’t have done this alone.”
The KKK must be in chaos by now. They’re in a situation where they’re going to get a backlash for fanning suspicions about smuggling.
“I’m already investigating the KKK, but I have a favor to ask of you, Joseph.”
“If you’re going to ask me a favor…”
“I need you to figure out who in politics is connected to the KKK. I don’t need any hard evidence. I just need to get a list.”
“You’re going to hit the KKK, right?”
Joseph muttered with a thoughtful expression.
“It won’t be easy. There are many Southern governors and legislators who are supporters of the KKK. It’s not uncommon for them to turn a blind eye to crimes committed. Isn’t lynching black people a Southern tradition?”
“Joseph, why do you think the KKK is popular in the South?”
“Why is it popular? What does it mean?”
“You ask why Southerners support the KKK?”
“Of course… isn’t that because you hate black people?”
“That’s right, fear of black people. And there’s one more thing.”
I thought of Griffith’s film, The Birth of a Nation. How were the KKKs portrayed there?
“Because they look cool. The KKK always wears white capes and marches like a cavalry.”
The cloaked crusader.
Vigilantes of Justice.
The invisible empire.
They also sent warnings to black people through newspapers:
The boss and the scorpion are ready
Some will sob and some will pray.
Welcome the skull.
Welcome to the feast of wolves and the dance of the silent skeletons.
The moon is rising.
The hour of death is set, and your shroud is torn to pieces.
Those who commit sins will be punished.
These are quite a few expressions that sound like a middle-aged disease.
The core of the KKK is mysticism.
It was about giving white men who felt fearful and insecure a sense of belonging and stability.
‘Become part of a group larger than yourself!’
Cool uniforms, titles, and even battles.
What could be more attractive than this?
“This is exactly what we should be aiming for. Their mysticism.”
“But isn’t there not much known about the KKK?”
Joseph said, putting a cigarette in his mouth.
“It’s well known that they hate Catholics, blacks, Asians, alcohol, and women’s suffrage, but other than that, I don’t know much about them.”
“You don’t have to worry about that part.”
I’m already getting the data through Hoover. And I have a more solid weapon.
Right here in my notes.
It contained most of the information about the KKK.
You have their most secret secret in your hands.
How can I use this?
“I’ve already told Bernays and Disney, so when they come, we can make concrete plans.”
“Bernays?”
Joseph frowned when he heard me.
“Wasn’t he the one in charge of marketing? And Disney makes animated films. Marketers and animators. How do they help?”
“You’ll find out soon enough. Those two are the ones…”
I smiled and shrugged. Who could be better suited than these two?
“These are the most powerful weapons to defeat the KKK.”

Author’s Note
Q: Did President Harding really have a sexual harassment scandal?
A: Yes, Nan Britton, known as Harding’s mistress, was the daughter of Harding’s hometown friend.
She had been in love with Harding since childhood and pursued him, and in a book published after Harding’s death (1927), she wrote about her six-year love affair with Harding and claimed that Harding was the biological father of her daughter.
The purpose of publishing the book was to raise money for child support that Harding had promised while he was alive but which his family never paid.
Although Nan was unsuccessful in her lawsuit against the Harding family, her book became a bestseller and achieved some of her goal.
In fact, the descriptions of Harding and his friends in the book were quite realistic and specific.
Harding’s reputation suffered greatly as revelations emerged that he had enjoyed secret liaisons with mistresses in hotels, the Senate office, and even the closet of his White House office.
