Episode 10 – The Land of Dreams and Hopes
The morning after a big drinking party with Armstrong.
A telegram arrived from Chairman Morgan asking him to come to New York.
‘As expected, you were tracking me.’
Richter and I took the fastest train back to New York.
“It’s nice to see you again, Mr. Smith.”
“The chairman is waiting upstairs.”
“Smith, a detective affiliated with Burns, nodded and said.
A noticeably more polite attitude than last time.
There’s no physical examination this time.
I walked up the stairs.
The chairman’s office on the top floor.
As I approached the door, I could hear voices faintly.
“That Hitler guy was definitely in league with Kuhnlob. Ernst Richter, who was with him. Wasn’t he Jewish too?”
Chairman Morgan’s voice.
Then someone else spoke.
“Then why would he come to you, Chairman, and ask for your cooperation? If he was in league with Kunrob, he would have approached you with intention…”
“I’ve heard that Kunrob Bank’s performance has been falling apart recently. Isn’t there some kind of conflict between them?”
You’re saying that Kunrob and I are in the same group?
Kuhnrobe is a representative Jewish bank in the United States.
‘At that time, many American Jews were pro-German.’
So-called German Jews who lived in Germany and came to America.
They maintained a conciliatory attitude toward the German Empire even during World War I.
‘Pro-German Jews.’
It’s an odd combination.
It’s ironic when you think of Hitler, the Nazis and the Holocaust.
What scenario is Morgan thinking of now?
‘I was in cahoots with Kunloff and the German intelligence network…’
Do you think I came to you because there was some conflict going on?
‘Even if I was wrong, I was very wrong.’
But from Morgan’s perspective, I can understand thinking this way.
Because I predicted the entire Treaty of Versailles.
You would think that you have an enormous information network.
‘Then let’s try to use Morgan’s illusion in reverse.’
Now we have a useful lever.
I coughed and opened the door.
A voice that suddenly breaks off.
Chairman Morgan and the balding man looked at me.
“Ah, Hitler. Come in. I’m sorry I called you so suddenly.”
Morgan said with a faint smile, his reaction noticeably more polite than Smith’s.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Hitler. My name is Henry Ramon, a partner at Morgan Bank.”
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Ramon.”
Henry Ramon.
It’s a familiar name.
Was he Chairman Morgan’s right-hand man?
I looked at Morgan and smiled.
“I guess the Chairman has made up his mind since he called me.”
“I guess I have to acknowledge your abilities. How did you know the details of the treaty in advance?”
“No fool would go around telling people about their trade secrets. I believe the Chairman will understand.”
After saying that, I looked at the atmosphere.
My goal is one.
He successfully persuades Chairman Morgan to take charge of managing his personal finances.
‘If I could just get a million dollars, I’d be successful.’
About 20 billion won in 21st century Korean currency.
This may not seem like a large sum to Morgan.
Even if you double or triple that…
“Hitler, you said this. You have the information and I have the money. I agree with that.”
Is it this easy to get over it?
“But I can’t just hand over the money. I need to do some more verification. I can’t just do it without knowing anything…”
“well.”
You’re just trying to extract information from me. You can’t do that.
“While the Chairman was away in Europe, I had another choice. I came to see the Chairman today to confirm it.”
I added.
“It seems the chairman is not interested, so I will go back now.”
So, what do we do now?
Morgan suspected that I had some kind of relationship with Kunrob.
What if I make a gesture here that suggests I’m going back to Kunrob?
‘A group with enormous information power goes to a rival bank.’
That too, to a Jewish bank that Morgan hated.
Can you stand this?
“for a moment!”
Ramon, who had been silent, shouted.
He turned his head and looked at Morgan.
“Mr. Chairman, if the last bombing had happened, it would have cost over $2 million just to clean up. And then we would have had to pour in even more to stabilize the stock market.”
“Oh, I forgot. Mr. Hitler, you said that the money you saved us was two million dollars.”
Morgan said with a faint smile, a reaction that he had just remembered.
As expected, he’s a snake-like guy.
“I’ll give you the money, so why don’t you give it a try?”
I paused for a moment.
A whole million dollars?
There’s no way Morgan would be such a sloppy guy.
“But there is one condition.”
That’s right.
“You and Mr. Richter will be required to be in this building during that period. We can have our staff handle the stock trading without any problems.”
Morgan continued.
“If the loss exceeds 15%, our contract will be automatically cancelled. Instead, I won’t ask you to pay compensation.”
I guess he won’t let you run away with the money.
It’s a reasonable condition.
“Then I have one condition.”
I said.
“Half of the profits. I want 50%. If you agree to these terms, I will accept it.”
“That’s a pretty high percentage.”
“If you had accepted my offer last time, it would have been much lower.”
I said in a calm tone.
I took a deep breath and my heart, which had been pounding like crazy, calmed down.
“Back then, the only choice was Morgan Bank. But now…”
“So you have more options? I see what you mean.”
Morgan said, tapping the desk.
“Okay, let’s do 50%. Ramon, go and write up the contract. Then when can we start working?”
“If you are ready, it can be done starting tomorrow.”
“Then it will be ready by tomorrow morning, Ramon?”
“Of course, Mr. Chairman.”
After signing the secret contract, I left the office in a half-dazed state.
‘I fooled Morgan.’
The world’s largest bank, JP Morgan.
As Richter said, isn’t this a huge fraud?
***
A week later.
“Two thousand shares of Saechimo Steel!”
“What are you doing if you don’t take care of it quickly?! If you keep it like that, you’ll lose everything!”
The automatic stock ticker machine spewed out long strips of paper, making a ticking sound.
Young servants ran around the office, sweating profusely.
Dozens of phones ringing incessantly.
The conductors of this chaos were Richter and me.
“It looks like I’m looking at a war room.”
“Well, there are only real experts. Who would have thought they could handle this much work in one day.”
Richter muttered.
A look of great impression on Morgan Bank’s handling of the matter.
Morgan had everything ready, without leaving anything out.
From the staff that handles your orders to the top-quality food you eat every day.
‘But the actual partner executives seem to be uneasy.’
Suddenly, two Germans took their place.
Among them, there were some who were openly sarcastic.
“I don’t know how you managed to get the chairman to cook, but you’d better brace yourself. He doesn’t tolerate failures.”
Several days and weeks passed in that atmosphere.
The stock market was on fire in anticipation of the impending recession, and all sorts of odds and ends were skyrocketing.
The same goes for our capital.
Two million dollars is ten million dollars.
Ten million dollars becomes twenty million dollars again…
Eventually, up to twenty-five million dollars.
Richter and I managed the situation by taking care of the room and board at the Morgan Bank.
The busiest one is Richter.
He reviewed my information and discussed strategies with other staff members.
‘Should I say the exact opposite?’
Rather, because I had nothing else to do, I called the Levine kids from time to time.
“Okay, I’ll buy you something delicious on the way back.”
“My dad told me to tell you both that I’m really grateful. He’s opening a second clothing store.”
“Really? Then I guess I should stop by too. I need to get some new clothes and a fedora.”
It was just idle chatter, but the surrounding employees would always prick up their ears and eavesdrop.
I guess you think there’s some hidden information.
The conversation I share will also be reported to Chairman Morgan.
‘You can’t find a secret message that doesn’t exist.’
I can see you groaning with your head wrapped around your neck.
A few more days passed like that…
As the prospect of huge profits became clear, the mood among Morgan’s employees also changed.
“Good morning, Mr. Hitler. Here is this morning’s paper.”
“I brought you the donuts, hot dogs, and coffee you mentioned.”
Now, it’s so polite that it’s uncomfortable.
“Hey, if you hold on a little longer like this, your profits will increase. Do you really have to sell it right now?”
“There’s nothing we can do about it. The stock market is going to crash soon.”
I told Richter.
During 1920-1921, the United States suffered from an economic depression.
Millions of soldiers discharged after the war.
The Spanish flu pandemic.
Intensifying conflicts between labor unions and companies, etc.
In the midst of this economic crisis, the Democrats ultimately lost, and Republican Warren Harding was elected president.
“Oh, I see. But it’s impossible to withdraw this much money without a shock. The only way is to organize it little by little.”
“It’s okay to take some losses, so take it slow. We don’t need to crash the market.”
Another week passed, and Chairman Morgan himself requested an interview.
“If I push the market any further, not only me but also our company will be suspected.”
He still reacted as if he couldn’t believe my earnings.
In one month, I grew from two million dollars to twenty-five million.
‘Rather, if the capital had been smaller, the rate of return would have been higher.’
As capital increases, it becomes more difficult to make profits without market shocks.
In a tense atmosphere, even if you remove just one brick, the whole thing will collapse.
‘Still, I earned enough.’
Just as I was thinking that, Chairman Morgan said:
“Your share alone is twelve million dollars. You made a fortune.”
He rapped on the table.
“After this is over, I would still like to hire you as an investment advisor to our company.”
Advice?
Are we officially forming an alliance?
“The basic salary is ten thousand dollars, and bonuses are paid separately based on the work done. Of course, you don’t have to go to work separately. What do you think?”
“It wouldn’t be a bad way to earn some extra money. I’ll accept it.”
In alliance with Morgan Bank.
Rather, it is a proposal that I welcome with open arms.
“Then I will also deposit the profits I earn this time at Morgan Bank. I ask for your continued support.”
I wonder if this level of gesture would be appropriate for me.
“That’s a wise choice. Tell your staff to prepare your account.”
Morgan nodded.
I came down to the first floor in a half-dazed state.
As I went to the window, I saw a familiar face on the staff.
A few weeks ago, an employee told me that opening an account required a minimum of $1 million.
His face turned pale when he found me.
“Hey, Mr. Hitler. I’ve been waiting for you. I’m really sorry about last time…”
“It took a little over a month. I would like to receive the checkbook.”
“Yes? Oh, yes! Of course.”
The clerk took out a checkbook and handed it to me.
You said I need a recommendation to open an account.
I guess Chairman Morgan’s recommendation is enough. Richter greeted me as I left the bank.
“Oh, what happened? Alf?”
“Congratulations. You are now a millionaire.”
I smiled and cut the check.
A million dollars.
Richter looked at the check with a blank look.
“Wow, I never dreamed I would make this much money in my lifetime.”
I lit a cigarette.
Is this the second cigarette you’ve smoked since coming to the US?
Today is a day that deserves to be smoked. I looked at Richter.
“Are you going to retire a millionaire now?”
“Well. Ah, Alf, what are you going to do?”
Instead of answering, I turned my head away.
The sight of New York unfolding before your eyes.
When I saw that sight, I felt a thrill involuntarily.
When I first came here, I was an immigrant with little money.
‘Ten million dollars.’
An amount of money that would be difficult to spend even if you spent it lavishly throughout your life.
But my goal didn’t end there.
The reason I came to America in the first place…
‘I didn’t want to end up like Hitler in the original history.’
To fuck the guy who dropped me here, X.
To do that, we must go in the exact opposite direction of Hitler in the original history.
‘The kindest and most just man in the world. Adolf Hitler.’
I also tried to become the richest person in the world.
There was still a long way to go to achieve that.
The roaring 1920s are just around the corner.
A golden age of prosperity.
You’ll need to be prepared to ride that wave.
I’m thinking of starting my own company.
He opened his mouth, looking at Richter.
“I’m just getting started.”
“Wh, what’s the beginning?”
“The beginning of making America love me.”
