Episode 110 – For Father
Washington DC
“Roosevelt for Governor of New York!”
Franklin Roosevelt smiled and waved to his supporters.
“Thank you all! Without your support, I wouldn’t have had the courage!”
He waved his hand, turned his head, and went into the house.
Mrs. Eleanor greeted him with a smile.
“Welcome, honey. The hero of the Democratic Party is back.”
“I won’t be able to play hero for long. I should enjoy it while I can.”
FDR smiled and sat down at the table.
A huge headline on the front page of the newspaper.
[President Coolidge attended the funeral of former President Warren Harding and offered condolences…]
“As Hitler said, it is time to stop the circus.”
“But the scandal has just broken out. Are you going to stop here?”
Eleanor said, putting down her coffee cup.
“If you continue to attack Harding, who is already dead, the public will not look kindly on you. They will say you are kicking the coffin of a dead person.”
“I think Harding’s coffin could be kicked over.”
“Even so…”
Just as Roosevelt was about to answer, a pure white object rushed into the kitchen.
“James! I thought your heart was going to burst. What the hell are you wearing?”
“It’s the little ghost Kusper! He’s the new friend of Mickey Mouse! Mom made him out of bed sheets!”
The little ghost spun around and shouted.
“Young Ghost Kusper?”
“Haven’t you seen it in the papers yet? There was a riot in Kansas. Those kids that were marching ahead of the KKK were wearing costumes. I think it was called cosplay.”
“Oh, that’s what those clothes are. They just look like white bed sheets.”
Roosevelt muttered with a sigh of relief. He placed his young son on his lap.
“I was surprised to learn that my son had joined a clan. By the way, it’s Kusper.”
A name and clothing reminiscent of the KKK.
Hitler made a mockery of the entire KKK with a cartoon.
“I guess we’ll have to ask the Democratic Party to make an animated film later. Don’t you think so?”
“Please make it about the donkey (Democrat) defeating the elephant (Republican).”
Eleanor shrugged.
“By the way, Mr. Hitler was also a man of many businesses. I heard that he even held a symposium with doctors from the Hope (Hofnung) Foundation.”
“symposium?”
“They said that they uniquely invited only polio specialists.”
“It’s polio…”
Roosevelt muttered.
Hitler once told him that several of his relatives suffered from polio.
‘You warned me that I was showing similar symptoms.’
Roosevelt shook his head.
It was uncommon for adults to contract polio.
“Oh, and Mr. Hitler was in the paper this morning too.”
“It must have something to do with the model taxpayer award. I heard Coolidge himself gives the award.”
“No, what kind of trip are you going on?”
“travel?”
Roosevelt flipped through the newspaper, scanning the articles.
“Ah, here it is.”
A car with a unique appearance.
Two New Frontiers were positioned in the center of the photo.
Next to him are Hitler and Porsche.
There stood the vice president who always followed Hitler around, Richter, and a woman he had never seen before.
[Adolf Hitler Announces America Driving Tour to Promote New Frontier! To Experience the Beauty of America… Also Observe Transcontinental Training to Receive New Trucks and Supplies…]
“Interesting.”
“Oh, this came to you this morning.”
Eleanor took out the box and handed it to her husband.
“What did you order at the post office?”
“Ah, I see you’re finally here.”
Roosevelt opened the box and took out its contents: small drawings of Rocket Man characters.
“Did you buy those useless stamps again?”
“Useless. You have no idea how valuable this treasure is.”
Eleanor smiled as she looked at her husband, who had a bright expression like a child.

St. Louis
State Route 66
“Doctor! If we keep doing this, we’ll all die!”
“I thought Mr. Hitler would enjoy a faster pace?”
Dr. Porsche’s voice was lost in the wind.
The roar of an engine.
Richter and his group, who had been following behind, were nowhere to be seen.
Only after I made gestures with my hands and feet did the Porsche slow down.
“I’ll take over the driving duties at the next gas station! If I keep doing this, I won’t be able to live my life.”
My heart was pounding.
I didn’t know Porsche was such a speed freak.
‘I forgot that you were someone who actually participated in the racing race.’
I’m usually calm and timid…
Are you the type that changes just by holding the steering wheel?
“If only the road was a little better, I could have driven faster. It’s a shame. I couldn’t even drive at 40% of my speed. There’s nothing I can do about unpaved roads.”
“If it had been packaged, it would have already arrived in California.”
Having said that, I unfolded the map.
It’s already been a week since I started driving.
Me, Dr. Porsche, Richter and my fiancée. The four of us raced down the road under the escort of detectives.
It arrived much sooner than expected.
‘Even the detectives are having a hard time following along.’
Then Dr. Porsche glanced at the map and said:
“By the way, it’s hard to find a restaurant every time, isn’t it?”
“Because the restaurant isn’t on the map.”
Every time I stopped by a town, I had to ask the locals.
In some places, crowds of welcomers and reporters were waiting in advance.
Kentucky in particular is a highlight.
[Welcome Colonel Hitler!]
A large sign and a welcoming crowd.
We had to sneak out because the governor insisted on following us all the way out of the state.
“There will soon be more amenities for car travelers, such as restaurants and motels.”
As I said that, I looked around the road. Such facilities were still found mainly in big cities.
But soon it will spread rapidly throughout the United States.
“I guess we could just make a guide.”
“A guide?”
“A guide that helps tourists easily find restaurants and other convenient facilities. How about a name like…Hitler Guide?”
The Michelin Guide was famous here.
Fewer people than you might think know that Michelin is a tire company.
It started as a travel brochure that was given away for free to tire buyers.
“I don’t think it would be possible for Mr. Hitler and I to go around the city one by one and rate each restaurant.”
“Why not leave that to the experts? It won’t cost you much money.”
“That sounds like a good idea, but… oh, I see a convoy over there!”
When I looked where Porsche was pointing, I saw a long line of trucks.
This is a bit surprising.
You’ve already met?
“They left a few days ahead of us…”
Is this all you can come to?
As we got closer, we saw a truck stuck in a ditch.
“The chains need to be tied tight. What kind of idiot tied them up like this?!”
The tracked vehicle tried hard to dislodge the truck, but to no avail.
“What should we do?”
“Since I was planning to visit anyway, I’ll go and say hello first. How about you help me out a bit, Doctor?”
“Then I will send the repair receipt to Mr. Hitler.”
Dr. Porsche said with a smile.
The soldiers who discovered us gathered one by one.
“Hey, that car. Isn’t that a New Frontier?”
“Look at the person in the passenger seat! Is that Adolf Hitler?”
“That Adolf Hitler?”
As soon as the car stopped, soldiers gathered around us without exception.
“What a sleek and well-made car.”
“Mr. Hitler! That’s a really cool car!”
“Are you here to watch us play in the shit?!”
Everyone burst into laughter at one soldier’s words. I laughed along and waved.
“I heard you were going across the continent, so I followed you, but I didn’t know we would meet so soon. My colleagues are coming behind you with cola, hamburgers, and hot dogs. Would you like some?”
“Hey, did you hear?! Mr. Hitler is giving us hamburgers and hot dogs?”
“Are there any pretty girls by any chance?!”
“Shut up, you idiot.”
The sound of laughter continues to resonate.
I also served in the military for a few years…
Strangely, when I wore my military uniform, I was hungry no matter how much I ate. This was especially true during World War I.
“Did you all stop because of that one truck?”
As I said that, I looked at the truck stuck in the ditch.
There were a few more broken down trucks ahead.
“That’s just how it is on this stupid road. We’re just using old equipment…”
“That old equipment will save your lives in battle.”
All the soldiers hastily saluted at the appearance of the officer. He had a cheerful expression and looked to be about 180 cm tall.
The facial features were also distinct.
He stopped for a moment and stared at me blankly.
“Hitler. Are you Adolf Hitler?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
I answered with a smile.
Is it really that surprising that you met me?
“I knew you were on the list of visitors, but I didn’t expect you to show up. I’m sorry that our circus doesn’t have much to offer you. My name is Dwight Eisenhower, and I’m in charge of these fools.”
“It seems to be a rather large circus troupe, Lieutenant Colonel Eisenhower.”
I answered with a smile.
Dwight Eisenhower.
Allied commander and president.
A true soldier who warned of the emergence of the military-industrial complex.
“Lieutenant Colonel is the rank during the war. Now I am a major again.”
Eisenhower, who had said so, tapped his rank insignia. Oh, this guy’s nickname was ‘Perennial Major.’
Didn’t MacArthur drag him around as an adjutant and not give him a chance for promotion?
Although he was later promoted under Marshall.
“Actually, my family is also from Germany. Eisenhauer, as you know, means coal miner.”
Eisenhower smiled bitterly.
“The last great war was a difficult time for me too.”
“It was a difficult time for all of us, but it’s over.”
As I said that, I pointed to Dr. Porsche.
“Dr. Porsche is the world’s best automotive engineer from the Czech Republic. There is no problem he cannot solve.”
Dr. Porsche nodded his apron.
“If you have any problems with your vehicle, the doctor will be happy to help you.”
“I don’t like having civilians help me during my training… but I don’t have many options right now.”
Eisenhower looked at the convoy of trucks and sighed.
At first glance, you can see that there are several trucks scattered around.
The thing that fell into the ditch hasn’t even been pulled out yet.
“I only moved about 5.7 miles in an hour. Axles broke, spark plugs fell off, brakes blew, and all that crap. If you’re a real expert, then…”
Eisenhower nodded, looking at the Porsche.
“We will pay for the repairs later through the War Department. The United States Army cannot receive help for free.”
“Please consider the hamburgers and hot dogs as my gift. I brought them to give to you anyway.”
I said.
“Actually, I didn’t know that the War Department would ask me to observe something like this. I think it’ll be an interesting experience.”
“Actually, regarding that…”
Eisenhower asked with a frown.
A complex and subtle expression.
Why are you doing that?
When you first saw me, your reaction was strange.
Even though he was hesitant, the feeling of uneasiness was conveyed as it was.
“Maybe… our training commander made a request to the War Department. For my sake.”
“You invited me to meet Mr. Eisenhower? I don’t know what you mean.”
“Mr. Hitler. When we first meet, I have to say something like this… No, I know it’s rude, but… I don’t know what to say. I’m sure many people have asked me the same thing.”
“Please speak comfortably.”
Are you asking me to lend you some money?
Eisenhower took a deep breath and said in a trembling voice.
“…my son is dying.”
“…”
Your son is dying?
He is Eisenhower’s son.
John Eisenhower.
I think he grew up and became an officer and military expert.
‘No, there was definitely another one before that.’
First son, Dowd Eisenhower.
Also known as Aiki.
Clearly he died early from scarlet fever…
‘Oh, I see.’
Now I think I know why.
Why did Eisenhower’s superior, the training commander, request my observation at the War Department?
Scarlet fever was a disease treatable with penicillin. Eisenhower must have heard about Compound H.
‘Are you asking me for help?’
It’s a natural thing for a father.
There is no reason not to help Eisenhower.
‘I have something to gain too.’
Eisenhower is a man who will succeed within a few years.
Whether it’s the truck business or influence and connections within the military, there are many areas you can get help from.
Not only that…
A soldier father’s efforts to save his young son.
Wouldn’t that be more than enough for a KKK member who got shot in the butt?
It’s also perfect for dispelling the Compound H conspiracy theory spread by the KKK.
After thinking about it, I reached out and grabbed his arm.
“Major, perhaps it was fate that I came here today.”

Author’s Note
Q: Did Eisenhower’s eldest son really die of scarlet fever?
A: Yes, Eisenhower’s first son, Dowd Dwight, died at a young age from scarlet fever.
Eisenhower was very fond of his son and called him Ikey (Eisenhower’s own nickname was Ike).
The scarlet fever that Aiki had was an incurable disease at the time, and even if the symptoms improved, many children eventually became ill or died.
As his condition worsened into meningitis, Ikey eventually died, leaving Eisenhower devastated.
“The death of my child was the greatest despair of my life,” Eisenhower wrote in 1967. “I have never forgotten it for a moment.”
Every year on the anniversary of Aiki’s death, he sent Mami (his wife) yellow roses, as yellow was Aiki’s favorite color.
The child’s death also caused legal troubles for Eisenhower, who received $250 in dependent care payments from the Army before Ikey’s death.
However, at the time, the child was living with his grandmother, and according to military law, a son was prohibited from receiving support money while living with his grandmother.
Accordingly, Eisenhower was questioned by military investigators, and he was later found not guilty.
Scarlet fever is treatable today with penicillin.
