Episode 116 – The One Who Heals the King
Washington DC
United States of America
United States Post Office Department HQ
“Hey, have you organized all the data that came up this morning?!”
“Oh, not yet!”
“Are you crazy?! If we don’t finish this by this morning, we’re all dead! The entire western supply will stop!”
“We have an emergency request from Texas!”
“It’s not just that important right now! If we don’t solve the logistics for heading to Washington right now…!”
The usually quiet hallway was filled with all sorts of noises. Employees and secretaries were running around the office, carrying documents.
The same was true of the Postmaster General’s office.
Director Hayes frowned as he looked at the flood of reports.
“What on earth is going on?”
“Even if we mobilize all emergency personnel, the situation is simply unmanageable. If things continue this way, there is a possibility that our entire main business will be paralyzed…”
“I’m going crazy. This chaos is happening right after I was appointed.”
Even as Director Hayes muttered, new reports continued to pour in.
Requests for emergency assistance from most state post offices.
There were reports that they were unable to cope with the increased postal work.
“If something like this happened in just one city, it would be an emergency, but I didn’t think the entire state would be paralyzed…”
Director Hayes looked up and asked.
“An increase of over 30% from last week. Is this really a reasonable number?”
Hundreds of millions of pieces of mail moved through the federal postal service each week.
Even a 10 or 20% increase would be an emergency.
A surge of over 30% was something that only happened on Christmas.
“How about we just take care of important tasks and postpone regular mail?”
The executives who had been summoned to the office began to speak one by one.
“If we could close the post office for just one day, we could clear the backlog of mail.”
“Are you all in your right mind?”
Director Hayes frowned.
“What would the press say then? They’d say the government closed the post office because it was afraid of being criticized. Heck, even during the Civil War, letters and mail still arrived!”
“…”
The silence continued, and then one executive cautiously opened his mouth.
“Right now, most of our mail is going to three areas: New York, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey.”
“Let me make a prediction. Washington will go to the White House. New York will go to Hitler Company. New Jersey will go to…”
Director Hayes let out a deep sigh.
“Isn’t that the New Jersey standard?”
“Yes, that’s right. If we prioritize manpower in those areas, we can reduce bottlenecks.”
“Then let’s do that. And request emergency relief funds from the government.”
The director muttered as he looked at the executives rushing out.
“It looks like he’ll get cut off as soon as he’s appointed.”

New York
Hitler Company
“This is really the mail that came in a week?”
Amelia Morgan looked at the first floor lobby with a bewildered expression.
Piles of letters piled up like mountains everywhere.
“If I make a mistake, I’ll get crushed by the letter.”
The employees organized the packages as they climbed the hill of letters as if they were mountaineering.
Post office trucks were waiting in front of the main entrance on the first floor. The trucks were full of mail that had not yet been unloaded.
When trucks weren’t enough, they even had horse-drawn carriages.
“Because we had no place to store it, we had to hurriedly rent nearby warehouses.”
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this.
I knew there would be some pressure on New Jersey Standard…
‘I never thought I’d get this many letters of support.’
From California to Kansas, Kentucky, and even Texas, mail poured in from all over the country.
Most of the comments are encouraging.
There were even many letters containing checks and cash.
[I am an ordinary office worker living in Missouri. I would like to make a donation to help build the Compound H plant, even if it is only a little…]
[Our club has collected a group signature. The list of signatures has already been sent to the White House, so I will send you a copy separately. If it can help…]
Ten dollars.
One hundred dollars.
Even donations of over a thousand dollars.
The amount we have so far been known to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
‘I think there must have been a lot of money embezzled from the post office in the meantime.’
Just when I was thinking I’d have to find out later, Amelia said:
“It’s not unreasonable. Wasn’t everything that’s happened over the past few days planned by Herr Hitler?”
She smiled faintly.
“The discovery of the oilfield, the takeover offer from Royal Dutch Shell, government pressure, public outrage. It’s a well-crafted story.”
“You could see it that way, I guess.”
Not all of it was intentional though.
Could there be a more fun and exciting story than this?
[Hitler wants to sell the genetic lands for cheap to produce new drugs. But the government blocks the acquisition by Royal Dutch Shell for the benefit of New Jersey Standard!]
The American public largely distrusted standards and government.
Recently, the Harding scandal broke out.
It would seem as if Standard is working with the government to swallow up my genetics.
I expected letters, maybe a group signature…
“I didn’t know it would be this much. If we just collect donations, we could build another factory.”
“There was a story in ancient Rome. There was a rich man who would go around looking for houses that were on fire and buy them for a very low price.”
Amelia said.
“Those whose houses and property were burned had no choice but to sell them for a pittance. All the Romans condemned the rich man as immoral.”
“That rich guy is a New Jersey standard.”
I have no choice but to sell my genetic material to save lives, but Standard, an evil corporation, is trying to destroy it.
That sounds like a plausible story.
“The standard, however, was still.”
“Because the public only knows what’s in the newspapers. And if you think about previous events, like the tax audit… the Hitler Company would be more trustworthy than the Standard.”
Amelia picked up a letter and put it down again.
The Rocket Man stamp caught my eye.
Most of the stamps attached to the letters have Rocketman characters.
“You’ve acquired a tremendous treasure. You’ve easily obtained the list of supporters.”
“A list of supporters…”
Oh, that’s what you mean.
Did you miss that part while you were organizing the letters?
‘These letters are all from my supporters.’
It was basically like getting a list of my fans.
Address, name, occupation, etc.
Maybe this will be of greater benefit than donations.
“Anyway, what are you going to do now?”
“The ball is now in Standard’s court.”
After saying that, I fell down on top of the pile of letters.
I wanted to try lying on the snow and making an angel shape.
Letters don’t seem to work.
“A similar volume of letters must be arriving at the New Jersey headquarters by now.”
The content will be different from the letters I received.
I don’t really want to imagine it.
Royal Dutch Shell’s takeover offer.
Pressure from the United States government.
Even the public’s public opinion offensive.
What choice will New Jersey Standard make in this atmosphere?
In fact, the answer was already decided.
“They will contact you soon.”

New Jersey
Standard Headquarters
“It is clear that Hitler was inciting public opinion!”
“Isn’t this a scheme to force the shale oil fields onto us?!”
“Just ignore it! Since when have corporations acted according to the public’s demands?”
“We can’t be swayed by what the media tells us to do!”
The executives’ angry shouts echoed through the conference room. Walter Teagle closed his eyes and stroked his forehead.
“But isn’t it true that most of the oil fields Hitler discovered contained oil? Some of them were crude oil.”
“We cannot ignore the fact that Royal Dutch Shell has taken action. If we do not take over, the government will also allow Royal Dutch Shell to take over.”
“Would they really pay ten million dollars or more to buy those oil fields?”
“…”
Meanwhile, parcels of mail were pouring into the first floor of the building.
Insults, threats, and slanderous comments.
Fearing a bomb attack, the employees refused to even open the letter.
“Damn, I don’t know what that fucking Hitler is thinking.”
Walter Teagle muttered.
Hitler brought in fortune tellers and eccentrics to discover dozens of oil fields in just a few weeks.
However, he announced that he would sell everything for Compound H.
Standard’s rival, Royal Dutch Shell, was quick to jump in.
Then the White House intervened, saying it couldn’t be done, and in the meantime, New Jersey Standard was left in limbo.
The result is the current situation.
“Does Hitler want us to buy the oil fields? Or does he not want us to buy them?”
“We must beware of Hitler’s schemes. Didn’t he get caught up in the Rocket Man incident before and then get overturned in court?”
“In the radio hearings before, they were actually in favor of regulation. No, the hearings themselves were probably Hitler’s ploy. Our refusal to take over might have been exactly what Hitler wanted.”
Several executives nodded.
“What if Hitler later extracts the oil himself after refusing to take over?”
“Hitler may really need the cash. If so, we shouldn’t be handing over the oil fields to the Shell guys.”
“But you have to consider the risks. In a competitive environment like today, it’s not worth wasting money…”
“Shale is like a bomb!”
When Tigle raised his hand, all the executives stopped talking.
“Let’s come up with a plan. Let’s look at both scenarios where we acquire the oilfield and where we don’t. And…”
He got up from his seat and looked out the window.
Post office trucks gathered in front of the headquarters.
If things continued like this, they would all end up buried in stationery and die.
“Once this is over, I guess we’ll have to change the company name.”

Campobello Island
Roosevelt family cottage
“Franklin, are you still feeling unwell?”
Eleanor looked at her husband and asked.
Post office trucks were driving around the island collecting letters.
“It’s just a little chilly. It’s not that strange…”
Roosevelt said, plopping down in his chair. He was enjoying his vacation with his family.
Campobello Island is a place where his family often goes on vacation.
With a long coastline in the background, forests, horses and cows.
Roosevelt enjoyed long walks whenever he came here, but this time was different.
“I didn’t know there was still Spanish flu around. Just eat some chicken soup and you’ll be fine. Maybe it’s because I’ve been meeting so many people.”
“My face doesn’t shiver when I have the flu.”
Eleanor sighed and studied her husband’s face.
“Since yesterday, my fever has been rising and I feel cold, and my legs are also…”
She paused for a moment.
I have seen all of these symptoms in hospitals.
polio.
Didn’t Hitler warn Roosevelt to be careful before?
“Just in case, I’ll contact Mr. Hitler. I’ll get the contact information of the doctors who came to the polio symposium…”
“I don’t think that’s necessary.”
Roosevelt scratched his head and muttered.
The laughter of children could be heard outside the villa.
“You told me to feel free to contact you anytime. I guess that’s okay.”
Eleanor sighed, went into the living room, and picked up the phone.
The operator spoke in a tired voice.
“You will need to wait at least two more hours to be connected to Hitler Company.”
“It’s urgent. Is there no other way?”
“As of now…”
Then Roosevelt coughed and said,
“There is a direct line to Hitler’s office. Ask the operator to contact Luigi’s Pizza Warehouse No. 2…”
“all right.”
This time the call was connected right away.
“Mr. Hitler? Oh, yes. It’s Eleanor Roosevelt. I’m sorry to interrupt you when you’re so busy. I have something to ask you… No, we’re on vacation at the villa, and I’m concerned about something Mr. Hitler said last time.”
Eleanor briefly explained the situation. There was a short silence, and then Hitler spoke immediately.
“Okay, I’ll contact the doctors right away.”
“You don’t have to do that right away. It doesn’t seem that bad, but I was just wondering…”
“No, ma’am. You have reached the right place. Please wait a moment.”
Hitler hung up the phone before she could finish speaking.
After an hour and a half, five vehicles arrived at Campobello Island.
Doctors pouring in.
They were all world-renowned polio specialists.
Dozens of people, including nurses and assistants, approached Eleanor, who had a puzzled look on her face.
“Where is Mr. Roosevelt?”

Author’s Note
Q: What was it like when Franklin Roosevelt got polio?
A: At the time, FDR was under a lot of stress as he started working at a law firm right after losing the vice presidential election.
FDR, who had come to Campobello on vacation, developed a fever and felt unwell the next day. The family physician, Dr. Bennett, concluded that he simply had a cold.
Three days later, FDR’s paralysis became apparent, and the new medical team determined that he had a form of polio.
His wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, had to take care of him herself because she could not find a nurse, and FDR had a difficult time with his rehabilitation after that.
It has also been recently claimed that the illness that FDR suffered from was not polio, but Guillain-Barré syndrome.
