Episode 13
Episode 13 – Hinkel and Charlie
“I, I don’t need any more, do I? I’ll go to the company and check the progress. It’s hard to meet even one genius a day.”
Richter half ran back to the company.
I walked through the streets of New York, lost in thought.
“Nikola Tesla.”
A dreamer and genius scientist.
The father of modern alternating current electricity.
The unfortunate genius buried by Edison.
etc.
There are too many words to describe Tesla.
‘Now…’
All previous businesses failed.
I guess you’re living like a hermit in a hotel.
Aren’t you busy with your experiment?
Before we knew it, we had arrived at the hotel Edison had mentioned.
“Mr. Tesla? He should be at the park right now.”
The hotel manager said.
I arrived at Bryant Park, behind the New York Public Library.
Are you experimenting in the park?
Is this a resonant frequency device that causes earthquakes?
Maybe it’s a radio-controlled car.
“It’s over there.”
What caught my eye was…
A man in a suit feeding pigeons.
‘It looks a bit miserable.’
This is a scene you would only see in a movie.
To live like that and die alone.
The complete opposite of Edison, who enjoyed great fame.
“Excuse me. Are you Nikola Tesla?”
“Yes, are you from the newspaper company?”
“I’m not a journalist. I’m Adolf Hitler, an investor.”
It would have been nice to have a business card at a time like this.
I forgot to make it again.
“You’re from Germany. Or maybe Austria.”
“It’s probably an Austrian accent.”
I answered with a smile.
Tesla answered in fluent German.
If Edison was full of confidence and composure, Tesla felt solemn and polite.
“If you’re interested in investing, you must have come here after seeing my theory of particle ray weapons. If we just build ten particle ray factories along the coastline, we’ll be able to defeat any enemy.”
He said in an excited tone.
“It can melt anything, whether it’s gasoline or diesel. There’s nothing that can stop the particle beam.”
“Interesting. But I would like to suggest something a little more special.”
I repeated the explanation I had given to Edison about the invention laboratory.
As soon as I finished speaking, Tesla looked amazed.
“That’s really amazing. It’s a dream come true for inventors like me.”
He smiled brightly.
“I wish we had someone like Mr. Hitler when I was young. Who do you have in mind as director there?”
“First of all, Mr. Edison…”
“…”
A brief silence.
Tesla turned his head.
“It was nice meeting you. I appreciate the offer, but I think I must decline.”
My body flinched without me knowing it.
for a moment.
That’s different from what Edison said.
‘Do you still have ill feelings?’
That old man Edison tricked me.
I took a deep breath as I looked at the back of Tesla.
Should I just give up like this?
In fact, Tesla was of little use by the time Edison came over.
Tesla has developed several technologies, but none of them have been able to bring them to market.
Wireless communications, power transmission, radar, etc.
‘It was other scientists who made his imagination a reality.’
But it seemed a shame to give up like this.
I stopped him.
“Please wait a moment!”
“Why are you doing that?”
Edison’s selling point was fame. So, for Tesla…
“I promise to rebuild Wardenclyffe Tower.”
“What did you say?”
Tesla asked, frowning.
“You said you would rebuild the ‘tower’?”
“Yes, if you join my lab, I will rebuild the Tesla Tower. I will give you all the money you need.”
Wardenclyffe Tower.
AKA Tesla Tower.
‘The idea was to use the Earth’s surface to wirelessly transmit energy around the world.’
Tesla’s lifelong dream.
However, it failed when investors including Pierpont Morgan cut off support.
‘Even the towers that were built were all sold as scrap metal.’
Wireless transmission around the world.
That’s the kind of thinking a mad scientist would have.
“It seems like the heavens haven’t abandoned me yet.”
Tesla muttered.
“And so the hand of salvation came down from Austria.”
“But there is one condition. Development of wireless communication, that is, radio, must come before wireless power transmission.”
“Radio. That was one of the functions of Wardenclyffe Tower.”
He smiled.
“If we could build a wireless telegraph system and distribute cheap receivers, everyone in the world could read the news, hear speeches, and listen to music, anytime, anywhere.”
A dreamy look.
As expected, he does have a bit of a dreamer side.
“At that time, even paper newspapers will disappear. Everyone will be able to access information in real time.”
“It’s the Internet.”
“yes?”
“It’s nothing.”
That’s true considering the 21st century.
Now, we can access information from all over the world with just a smartphone.
I briefly described the 21st century landscape as if I were predicting the future.
“Communication using satellites orbiting the Earth. That’s interesting. And do you think that people all over the world will use this ‘computing machine’?”
“Yes, it will be small enough to hold in one hand and capable of performing millions of calculations per second. It will be able to use everything from movies to music to phone calls to cameras.”
I said with a smile.
“But most people would use the device to watch porn or cat videos.”
There’s even a joke that says 50% of internet traffic is porn and cat videos.
Tesla burst into laughter when he heard what I said.
“As technology advances, people will become smarter.”
An even softer response than before.
I guess I’ll have to put a stop to it around here.
Tesla was the right person to develop a radio receiver.
‘Unlike Edison, he had a clear vision for radio.’
Of course, Edison’s help would be needed to commercialize it.
I opened my mouth slowly.
“Mr. Tesla is talented at discovering new concepts and principles, but he is weak at developing markets or applying them. That is why investors are no longer coming to him.”
“But I…”
“On the other hand, Mr. Edison has great skills in building systems, manufacturing products, improving them, and applying them. So why shouldn’t the two of you work together?”
“You wouldn’t know, since you weren’t the one who suffered under Edison. Think of the insults you suffered from him…”
“Yes, I don’t know how Mr. Tesla feels. But I know one thing for sure. If we keep doing this, Mr. Tesla will grow old and lonely in a hotel.”
That’s what history was like.
Tesla dies alone, unable to pay his hotel bill.
“If you want to give Edison a piece of your mind, shouldn’t you get in the ring like a man and fight? Or will you just run away?”
“…”
There was silence, and Tesla chuckled.
“I’m sorry. This is the first time I’ve heard anyone say that. Why is Mr. Hitler trying to drag me in by promising me a tower?”
“For my own benefit, of course.”
I shrugged.
Actually, this is a lie.
It wasn’t just about developing radio.
Edison and Tesla join hands?
There can be no marketing material hotter than this.
And for some reason, my heart started pounding.
Tesla, known as the ill-fated genius.
How would history have turned out if he had received the financial support he needed?
That’s why I first wrote an alternative history novel.
A story different from existing history.
What if that were the case?
“I want to see a new future.”
“A new future.”
Tesla muttered.
“I think the future is always new. I think I know what you mean.”
He extended his hand and asked for a handshake.
“I can’t promise anything right now. I’ll think about it some more and get back to you.”
“That’s all I ask of you.”
I parted ways with Tesla with a relieved heart.
As expected, meeting three geniuses in one day is tiring.
At this point, I’ve done enough.
‘I need to go to work and get some sleep.’
As I arrived at the company building, I saw a familiar face.
That young face I saw in Kansas City.
“Walt!”
Have you come already?
“Mr. Hitler! I kept looking around to see if this was the right place.”
Disney came running with a bright expression. Next to him stood another man wearing glasses.
“As I said last time, you can just call me Adolf. Come on in. This way…”
“Oh, my name is Av Iwerks.”
It has a strangely similar vibe to Richter.
for a moment.
iWorks?
The memory came back to me belatedly.
A key figure who led Disney’s early success and was able to draw 700 pictures a day.
‘How on earth do you draw 700 pictures in a day?’
I can’t even imagine.
Disney said, pointing to Iwerks.
“Without Erb, I couldn’t even dream of making animations. He’s an incredibly talented guy.”
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Iwerks.”
“Um… I came here after hearing Walt’s words, but are you really thinking of investing in us?”
“Yes, of course. Would you like to go inside and talk?”
Now that I think about it, I should also find out about movie distributors.
No matter how great Disney’s animation is, it will only be successful if there are theaters to show it.
“How about we go to California together after the contract is finalized?”
“California? Is Mr. Hitler coming with you?”
Disney asked.
You tell me to call you casually, but you always call me by your honorific title.
“Yes, we need to find a place to set up a studio there. And we’ll also find a distributor.”
As he said that, Richter appeared.
“Hey, wait a minute! If you go to California, Alf, how are you going to organize the company? You have to hire people to work, and do the paperwork…”
“You can do that on your own. I’m not really any help here.”
I said in a calm tone.
No matter how much I say it, you sound like an evil boss.
“If anything urgent comes up, let me know by telegram.”
“Okay, wait a minute!!!”
I ran away with the two of them, leaving Richter in despair.
Oh, now that I think about it, I forgot.
“Walt, can I ask you a small favor?”
“Yes? Just say whatever. If you want to check out the animation, I just happened to bring some films…”
“I already know Walt’s animation skills. Actually, I just need a business card.”
I said with a smile.
“I don’t have anyone to ask for help. Is that okay?”

A week later
California
Hollywood
“Mr. Chaplin! I really enjoyed your movie! Can you please sign it for my son?”
“I got a tattoo of you too!”
“Chaplin! Please look this way!”
A crowd gathered around a man.
“Thank you all! Please also show lots of interest in Sunnyside, which is currently being filmed!”
The crowd’s cheers grew louder as the man waved his fedora.
A large group of men blocked the gathering crowd.
“If you would like to interview Mr. Chaplin, please contact my manager to schedule an appointment.”
“Mr. Chaplin, it will be time to shoot soon. You should go now.”
“Okay, Charles.”
The man waved one last time before getting into the car.
After a while, the car he was riding in stopped in front of a studio.
United Artists
United Artist, UA
A sign on the front of the studio building greeted him.
“Charlie, good morning. Here’s the schedule you mentioned.”
“Thank you, Adeline.”
“This is the script used for the last shoot.”
The man passed the film staff and entered the actors’ waiting room.
A woman asked while getting her makeup done.
“Charlie, why are you so late?”
“Sorry, there was a sudden crowd on the street. Did you have some urgent news to tell me?”
Chaplin looked at Mary Pickford and asked.
Both men were founders of the film company United Artists.
“A German came to us today. He said he wanted to invest in our company.”
“I told you last time. It’s all a trick to manipulate us. They’re trying to somehow get their hands on our film company stocks and make a killing.”
Chaplin sighed and said,
“Who was it?”
“It was definitely Adolf… Oh, here’s your business card.”
Chaplin took the business card she handed him.
[Hitler Company]
[We perform investment and advisory related work.]
There was a character drawing next to it.
Round ears and nose.
Even the cute pants.
“Is it a mouse?”
“I said I wanted to meet you this evening just to talk.”
Mary said with a faint smile.
“That guy seems to be a huge fan of yours. His face is similar, and even his mustache is the same.”
“You look like me? Even the mustache?”
Chaplin looked at the business card with a smirk.
“I just needed someone who looked like me. It might be worth meeting.”
