Episode 27 – The Struggle That Wasn’t My Struggle
“Welcome to the Hitler Company, Mr. Carnegie.”
I extended my hand to the man standing across from me.
I never thought it would be Carnegie.
“My name is Dale Carnegie. I appreciate you taking the time to welcome me.”
“Actually, I’m not that busy.”
I answered with a smile.
Dale Carnegie.
When I first heard the last name Carnegie, I mistook him for the steel magnate Carnegie.
This guy was really great too.
‘The father of modern self-help books.’
His masterpiece, Human Relations, is said to have sold tens of millions of copies.
I think I read it in the military too.
I don’t remember the details. I think it was something about complimenting people around you often and not nagging them.
“I heard about Mr. Hitler in the newspaper and I really wanted to interview him.”
Carnegie said in an excited tone.
“Did you really come to America last year?”
“This is going to be a long story, so please sit comfortably.”
I nodded and offered him a seat.
It’s an interview.
There’s no reason to refuse if they offer free promotion.
“When I arrived at Alice Island, I was practically penniless.”
There was also a data note.
Even without that, I would have saved money somehow.
“So you went from penniless to successful businessman in such a short period of time?”
Carnegie’s eyes widened.
Well, even if it were me, I wouldn’t have believed it.
“I have a certain sense of investment. I made my money on the stock exchange.”
“According to some rumors floating around, he is said to be a member of the royal family of the German or Austrian Empire…”
“If that were the case, other Germans would have noticed. It’s not like there aren’t any Germans in America.”
“That’s a valid point. There are other rumors as well…”
We continued our conversation after that.
Trading stocks and options on the stock exchange.
From Edison’s Advanced Institute for Invention to Tesla Radio.
As the story continued, Carnegie’s eyes grew wider.
“So, does that mean Mr. Edison readily accepted the offer?”
“Who could have been better suited to the Advanced Institute of Inventions? Mr. Edison knew it.”
Rather, the desire to leave one’s own name behind was probably greater.
“I see. Mr. Hitler seems to have a different vibe from other existing tycoons.”
Carnegie said.
“Both Andrew Carnegie and Rockefeller put their names first.”
“My management philosophy is very simple: invest in people.”
I said.
It’s embarrassing to even call it philosophy.
“I find someone smarter than me and give them the job. It would be more accurate to say that I make that person’s dream come true.”
Would we have been able to invent the radio without Tesla and Armstrong?
Managing company finances, producing animations?
It would have been impossible.
“Actually, Andrew Carnegie didn’t know much about steel either.”
Carnegie nodded.
There was a brief silence for a moment…
He opened his mouth again.
“Can I make a suggestion?”
“Please speak comfortably.”
“If it is okay with you, Mr. Hitler, I would like to continue reporting for the time being. I am preparing a book that will contain the stories of successful people…”
He spoke in a cautious tone.
“I think many American readers will benefit from hearing Mr. Hitler’s story, and of course I do not intend to receive any compensation.”
“Thank you for your kind words.”
Are you going to follow me around and report on me for a while?
Human Relations was one of the best-selling books of the 21st century.
If I become well known, it will be difficult for the political world to attack me.
‘And while I’m at it, I’m also a little bit American patriotic.’
In fact, Hitler’s story of growth was fascinating.
He lost his parents at a young age and applied to art school, but was rejected.
After that, he lived as a street vagrant.
I went from religious shelter to religious shelter to solve my meals.
After the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted and was awarded the Iron Cross, 1st and 2nd class.
Even in the history of the original, Hitler made good use of his background.
An ordinary German and citizen.
“Let’s accept Mr. Carnegie’s offer. As long as it doesn’t involve company secrets, I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.”
“Yes, then would it be okay if I came to the mansion this afternoon? In a more comfortable environment…”
“This is my mansion.”
I shrugged.
The office was spacious enough that I didn’t need to find a separate house.
Sometimes when I’m bored, I go over to Levine’s house and sleep over.
“So, you take care of your accommodations at the company? I didn’t know you were that passionate about business.”
No, actually, my job is to loaf around all day.
I was silenced by Carnegie’s respectful gaze.
at that time.
Richter knocked on the door and came in.
“Alp. I think I need to take a phone call.”
“phone call?”
“It came from Louis.”
Louis Armstrong.
What kind of food did you eat today?
There’s no time to rest.
“Excuse me for a moment.”
I apologized to Carnegie and headed for the phone.
A familiar voice.
Something seems off.
“Pops? If you’re busy, I’ll call you later.”
“Nothing is more important than your phone. What’s going on?”
“I’m calling about… the radio broadcast.”
Radio broadcast?
Oh, we talked about that yesterday.
I asked Louis Armstrong to come on the radio.
“Have you ever been to a broadcasting station?”
“I went to the broadcasting station this morning…”
warble.
Louis spoke slowly.
“I was kicked out at the door.”
“what?”
You got kicked out?
On my radio station?
***
“Slow down, Louis. What do you mean you got kicked out of the broadcasting station?”
“They have no intention of playing Negro music on their radio station…”
“Didn’t I tell you that I invited you personally?”
It’s black music.
You kicked out the band I invited for that reason?
“I told him that Pops had invited me, but he wouldn’t listen. He said there must have been a mistake and kicked me out.”
Louis said.
“I was getting ready to go back to Chicago.”
“Just stay at the hotel. If there’s any disruption to the performance schedule, I’ll compensate you in full.”
Richter, who noticed that the atmosphere was not good, approached.
“I will personally apologize for the unpleasant experience you have had. Please tell the other band members as well.”
“But Pops…”
“No, I have to go get you now. Do you understand, Louis? Stay where you are.”
“…All right.”
After hanging up the phone, I explained the situation to Richter.
Richter frowned.
“You kicked out the band you invited? Maybe there was a misunderstanding?”
“Louis said he mentioned my name. And he also explained what he did at my party yesterday.”
Let’s make a concession and say that racism is real.
Because it’s a common reaction considering the atmosphere of this era.
‘But how can you ignore my name so easily?’
You didn’t even contact me to confirm.
This was not a simple mistake.
Unless there’s a major problem with the operation of the broadcasting station…
The person currently running the broadcasting station is Nikola Tesla.
I remembered what Edison said at the party yesterday.
‘It seems like you’re busy running the broadcasting station. You should go and show your face. And check to see if you’re still alive.’
I stood up from my seat and grabbed my clothes.
“Get dressed, Richter. Let’s go to the broadcasting station and check it out.”
“Hey, you’re going to stop by the hotel and pick up Louis and the band members? I’ll prepare a car in advance.”
When I returned to my office, I saw Carnegie sitting awkwardly.
“Mr. Carnegie.”
I looked at him and smiled.
Things have been interesting since day one.
“Would you like to go to the scene with me?”
***
Westchester, New York.
A large sign greeted us.
Tesla Radio.
A radio spire rising four stories above.
Right next door is a huge research lab.
‘This little station serves all of New York.’
I went into the building with Richter.
Louis and the other band members wait in the car.
Carnegie followed us two from behind.
“Welcome to Tesla Radio. What brings you here, Mr. Hitler!”
The receptionist greeted me with a start. But she still knows my face.
“I don’t think I heard you were coming today. Mr. Tesla is currently in a meeting…”
“No matter how busy you are, you will find time to meet me.”
I strode inside, leaving the bewildered receptionist behind.
The office and lab were a mess, to say the least.
Documents scattered everywhere.
The singers and guests who came for the broadcast also stood there with bewildered expressions.
Didn’t they even prepare the waiting room in advance? It’s a mess.
“Even at a glance, the problem is serious.”
“Tesla, isn’t working?”
Richter nodded in agreement.
“Why did you leave me alone until this mess came to me?”
“Either you didn’t do it. Or you couldn’t do it. It’s one of the two.”
I went into a room that was marked as a conference room.
A long table.
The employees sat in a circle around Tesla on the top table.
Tesla stood up in surprise.
“Ah, Mr. Hitler. What brought you…”
“Please ignore me and continue.”
I motioned for the meeting to continue.
There was an awkward silence, and then one of the employees spoke.
“We are short on manpower for night security. If we hire new guards with a higher wage, the other guards will surely complain…”
I looked at Tesla’s appearance.
Dark circles under the eyes.
I felt like I hadn’t slept properly for days.
He frowned every time his employees started talking.
“Then why don’t we raise the wages of the existing security guards? Let’s not make their work difficult.”
“But sir, we have financial problems right now…”
After several dozen minutes had passed.
The meeting is finally over.
From recruiting security guards to contracts for transporting supplies and electricity bills.
I almost fainted from boredom listening to this.
Tesla approached with a drooping face.
“Mr. Hitler. I didn’t expect you to come here so suddenly. Did something come up?”
“It seems you don’t know.”
I sighed.
I think I have a rough idea what the problem is.
“I got a call this morning. A guy named Louis Armstrong came to the station with my offer…”
Tesla frowned after listening to what I had to say.
“You just kicked out a band that was invited by Mr. Hitler? Come to my office first.”
He sighed and led me into his office.
The desk here was also filled with all kinds of paperwork.
There aren’t many design drawings.
All documents related to finance or management.
“I will fire that host immediately. I will also apologize to the band separately.”
“I see the real problem elsewhere.”
I pointed to a desk buried in papers.
“Mr. Tesla, have you ever run a company before?”
“I did hire workers and assistants when I was building the Wardenclyffe Tower, but…”
He slurred his words.
“This is my first time dealing with this many people.”
“The reason I founded this company and entrusted it to Mr. Tesla was because of the vision of radio.”
I said.
Tesla was a genius inventor and dreamer.
But what he does now is the exact opposite. It’s just small paperwork.
‘No wonder it became a mess.’
They probably can’t even manage radio broadcasts properly. That explains why this incident happened.
I coughed loudly.
“How is the receiver development work going?”
“First of all, Mr. Edwin Armstrong is working as a lead developer. I also participate from time to time.”
“In between. That’s the problem.”
Tesla was hired to develop radio.
It wasn’t my intention to entrust him with running the business.
‘Tesla is not Edison.’
How can we solve this? It would be good to have someone who is good at management.
Among the people I know…
Oh, that guy was there.
“How about doing it this way?”
I reached out and picked up the stack of papers.
“We’ll call in a specialist and delegate all the small tasks to him. Mr. Tesla will remain the CEO, but he can focus more on developing broadcasting programs and receivers.”
“It sounds like a dream.”
Tesla muttered.
“It seems like it’s been a few weeks since I last studied anything.”
“You don’t have to worry anymore. I have a friend named Richter. Mr. Tesla…”
I gestured to Richter.
“Please call Disney Studios in California.”
“D, Disney Studios? Why are you there all of a sudden?”
Richter tilted his head.
“You’re not planning on leaving Walt in charge of running this place, are you?”
“No way.”
I answered with a smile.
If Walt comes, it’ll just make things worse.
If you’re making animations, then maybe not.
But what about another Disney?
“There’s that guy, Roy Disney. Let’s leave it to him.”
