Episode 32 – Fair and square?
“What on earth are those sheep?”
“I, I don’t know either.”
The first thing I saw when I entered the White House was a flock of sheep.
Sheep roaming freely and grazing like in a pasture.
“They let it loose instead of having a gardener mow it to save on lawn maintenance costs. The president gave the order when the war was at its height.”
The driver shrugged and added.
“You may have to hire someone to clean up the mess later.”
“okay.”
President Wilson.
He was also nicknamed the White House principal.
A strict and moral idealist.
But he wasn’t really suited to politics.
‘Even during the armistice negotiations, we were manipulated by France and Britain.’
By the way, it’s the White House.
I never thought I would come here in person.
Hitler in the White House.
If anyone heard me, they would think I came as a conqueror.
After a brief body search, we entered the White House.
‘I also want to see the Oval Office in the West Wing.’
That might be a bit difficult.
The White House felt more bland than I expected.
A black handyman in the middle of cleaning.
A server who serves coffee and cake.
Even civil servants dressed in suits.
Is this a place where people live after all?
“Hey, I don’t see the president. Didn’t he say he was going to give me a letter of appreciation himself?”
“Wilson should be in bed by now. He probably didn’t call us in the first place.”
“Well, if not Wilson, then who…”
As Richter was muttering, someone came into the waiting room.
A woman wearing a simple, old-fashioned hat.
“Mr. Adolf Hitler. And the person next to you is Mr. Ernst Richter?”
The woman smiled and extended her hand.
“It is an honor to meet you, Madam.”
Edith Gold Wilson.
As expected, this guy came instead of the president.
President Wilson’s wife and the woman who served as his confidant when he suffered a stroke.
“Come inside. The President will be here to greet you both soon.”
She said in a calm tone.
The president is coming in person?
‘I think that’s unlikely.’
As we entered the reception room, black servants came with coffee and sugar.
Now that I think about it, there are only black people.
Black people who serve white politicians.
Should I say that this is typical of this era?
I picked up the coffee cup in front of me.
Then a servant approached Edith Wilson and whispered to her.
She nodded and said.
“I’m really sorry to both of you. It seems the President suddenly had some urgent business to attend to. I guess I’ll have to give you the certificate of appreciation instead.”
also.
What I said earlier was a lie.
I nodded naturally.
“I wish I could have met the President in person, but unfortunately I cannot. Please convey my regards to him.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Edith smiled.
“I’ve heard a lot about Mr. Hitler. I heard that he became very successful in America less than two years after coming here.”
“It would have been impossible in any other country but the United States.”
I think this will suffice for the exploration battle.
It was time to get to the main point.
What kind of certificate of appreciation exactly do you give?
“But I’m afraid that I don’t deserve to receive a letter of appreciation from the president.”
“You are not qualified. Isn’t the capitalism factory in Chicago also run by Mr. Hitler?”
Edith said.
“I read in the newspaper that you treat your workers better than any other company. You deserve a certificate of appreciation.”
It’s a capitalism factory.
Are you using that as an excuse to give me a certificate of appreciation?
“The President was more concerned about the treatment of workers than anyone else. He was very pleased to hear Hitler’s story.”
She added.
“The radio station run by Mr. Hitler is also very interesting.”
I adjusted my posture.
Now you’re finally revealing your true colors.
“The President is also very interested in radio. How long will it take to install a radio receiver in the White House?”
I kept my mouth shut.
This was not a simple question.
A request to support the president.
“It will probably take some time. Since it is being installed in the White House, security will be important. It will take at least several months to build a dedicated receiver.”
The presidential election will be held in a few months.
I think you understand by now.
Edith smiled faintly as she heard me.
“It’s a shame, but if it could be done sooner, the President would be happy.”
She continued.
“While we were talking, I forgot to give you a certificate of appreciation. The reporters will be waiting, so let’s go together.”
Are you saying that you even called the reporters separately? This is interesting.
Richter and I received a letter of appreciation from the First Lady and chatted some more.
After a short press conference…
“The next time you come, the President himself will greet you, Herr Hitler.”
“I’m looking forward to it too. Thank you for inviting me today, Madam First Lady.”
It was two hours later when I left the White House.
“What, I was nervous for no reason. He’s really a very kind person. Aren’t you, Alf?”
“…”
Instead of answering, I shrugged.
This guy also has a secretly innocent side.
“It’s more like he’s a snake than kind.”
“Huh, a snake? Are you saying it looks like a fox? What part of it is it?”
“Shh, don’t speak loudly. I’ll tell you as we go.”
I looked around and whispered.
Why did they call me from the White House?
It was very simple.
‘This is a sophisticated trap.’
***
“You called me that on purpose to cause controversy?”
“okay.”
I said as I turned the steering wheel.
I need to get back to work quickly.
“Sleep a little longer, then explain in detail.”
“Tomorrow morning the newspapers will be reporting that I received a certificate of appreciation from the White House.”
“so?”
“How do you think the Republicans will react when they hear that?”
“You think you and the White House are working together? But that’s not the case.”
“How can the Republicans know the truth? No matter how many excuses I make, they will still be suspicious.”
“Oh, so the White House was after that too?”
“Yeah, that’s how they’re trying to get me on their side.”
If Republicans attack radio, I have no choice but to turn to the Democrats.
In either scenario, the White House will not suffer any losses.
‘Even so, it’s too much of a stretch.’
Amelia was right.
It seems that President Wilson is in no position to be picky.
“You struck first before I joined the Republican Party. Otherwise, there would be no reason to call you at such a sensitive time.”
It was difficult to side with the Republican Party even though I had received a letter of appreciation.
“But, why did you come here so easily? If you knew that, you wouldn’t have come.”
“How would it look if I turned down an official certificate of appreciation from the White House?”
“ah…”
Richter muttered.
“Well, since it’s come to this, why don’t we just join the Democratic Party? Or contact RCA and ask for help.”
Richter added.
“You have connections with the government, right? Well, there must be some way to solve this.”
“It’s not a wise choice to ask for help from a rival you were fighting with until recently.”
If RCA steps in, things could turn around.
But how much will the price be?
“Then what are you suggesting we do? This isn’t a problem that can be solved by just sitting still.”
“You’re right. And I don’t like choices that are forced upon me.”
That’s why I went through all the hardships to come to America.
If I wanted to be comfortable, I would have been the Führer of Germany.
It was my turn to fight my way.
If it’s America, do it like America does.
“You can’t fight with facts like a coward.”
I parked my car in front of the company building.
“Let’s fight fabrication and instigation fairly.”
The area I am most confident in.
We have to win with marketing.
“What did you just say? Didn’t you just reverse the order of the words?”
Richter sighed and got out of the car.
“So, what are we going to do now?”
“Just follow me for now.”
As I entered the office, Carnegie spoke to me.
“Mr. Hitler, I heard you went to the White House to receive a certificate of appreciation. That is something to congratulate you on.”
“Yes, but that’s not what’s important right now.”
I sat down and got straight to the point.
“Mr. Carnegie, you’ve been interviewing me for the past few weeks. How’s your work progressing?”
“Yes, but Mr. Hitler is such a unique person that it is difficult to control the amount of space he puts in the book.”
Carnegie said with a puzzled look on his face.
“The book I’m writing is going to include stories of ten people, including Mr. Hitler, but I need to reduce the length…”
“How about publishing a separate book just about my story?”
“Are you talking about Mr. Hitler alone? That is an interesting suggestion, though.”
Carnegie muttered.
“I wonder how much the sales will be…”
“I will give Mr. Carnegie thirty thousand dollars in advance as royalties. I think that will be enough.”
“Thirty thousand dollars?”
Carnegie looked dumbfounded.
“I will give you that much. I will also give you additional money depending on the sales volume.”
Carnegie always evaluated me positively.
Rather, it seems like you are being too religious, to the point that it is scary.
American optimism?
Because I see him as the embodiment of successism.
It was unlikely that anyone would write anything negative about me.
“I would like you to write down my thoughts about America in as much detail as possible. I hope I can finish it within a week.”
We need to bring out the maximum amount of American nationalism.
One-dimensional nationalism won’t do.
The despair of Americans who were tired of war after the end of World War I.
I had to dig into those feelings like a sharp blade.
“If it’s a week… I guess I should start retiring right away. I think I can make it just barely.”
“That’s good. Oh, Richter.”
“uh?”
“Go now and check with some publishers and printers. I need to print it as cheaply as possible, in paperback or pocketbook form.”
I guess I’ll have to contact Hearst and place a big newspaper ad.
“We need to make it an issue as soon as the book comes out. Capitalism is popular, so it’s okay to ride on that wave.”
I said.
“If it takes time, you can take over a suitable place. As long as it’s under two hundred thousand dollars, it’s no problem.”
“Oh, okay. But…”
Richter tilted his head.
“What are paperbacks and pocketbooks?”
“There are paperbacks. They are cheaper and smaller.”
In 21st century Korea, hardcover books are popular, but it’s different in the West.
I heard that cheap, mass-produced paperbacks are popular.
“Are you talking about the ten-cent novel? I’ve seen it used in cheap novels and magazines.”
Carnegie tilted his head as if he didn’t know.
this.
Was this format of book still popular?
“Make it as small as possible on light and cheap paper. So that anyone can buy it for the price of a cup of coffee. It would be faster and easier to just take over a publishing company.”
I said.
“It has to be sold cheaper than any other book on the market.”
“Then you won’t make much profit. You already gave me thirty thousand dollars…”
“What’s important to me now isn’t profit, Mr. Carnegie.”
I answered with a smile.
Quite the opposite.
It didn’t matter if the books were sold at a loss.
What matters is my image.
It’s a war to build an image.
Where is public opinion more powerful than in the United States?
“The White House made a mistake this time too.”
“Poem, is that a mistake?”
“You promoted me as a good businessman who works for the workers. That’s not something that comes easily.”
I guess I can even use the certificate of appreciation I received today.
I’m going to take the weapon that the White House is wielding and make it my own.
“Contact Bernays and tell him to come right away.”
I said, standing up.
There’s more than one thing to do.
“We need to change the priorities of PR.”
Fabrication and incitement.
I guess we’ll have to do it Hitler’s way.
