Episode 46 – The Voice of Freedom
More than five hundred years after her death, Joan of Arc was canonized by Pope Benedict XV.
A cathedral dedicated to Joan was planned on the site of the Rouen executions, and a large cross was erected at the site of the executions.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the Republican National Convention to decide the presidential candidate was in full swing.
“Nine times! We’ve had a party vote nine times. Now it’s time to make a decision!”
“I agree with what the manager said. If I keep doing this, I’ll forget the faces of my kids at home.”
The Republican leadership room was smoky. Men waved and smoked cigars.
Even after nine rounds of party member voting, no candidate was decided.
The most likely candidate is General Leonard Wood.
This was followed by fierce battles between Frank Lowden, Hiram Johnson, Herbert Hoover, and Warren Harding.
This election is likely to be won by the Republican Party.
Factions within the party fought fiercely to nominate candidates they favored.
“General Leonard Wood is the man most like Theodore Roosevelt. We should put him forward…”
“What about Hoover? Let’s support the savior of Belgium!”
“Hoover didn’t even know whether he was a Republican or a Democrat until he started campaigning. How dare you support him!”
Laughter erupted from all over.
Herbert Hoover.
As head of the War Food Administration, he was responsible for procuring supplies and raising funds during World War II.
People called him the savior of Belgium, as he provided milk and meat stew to over 2.5 million Belgian children.
“Of course, if we emphasize that part, it will be effective. But as others have pointed out, Hoover is too undignified. It might be okay for the next presidential election or the one after that, but it won’t work this time.”
“Then what about Harding? He’s a man with no enemies around him. He’s a worthy candidate for this presidential nomination. He’s popular with the citizens.”
“I think there is a problem of fairness in supporting Harding, who came in fifth. Why are we picking Harding over other strong candidates?”
“If someone with too strong a color comes out, it won’t be good for our Republican Party. Harding seems like the perfect choice. Didn’t he show his presence at the last hearing?”
The men nodded.
Tesla Radio Hearings.
As it ended on a warm note, Harding’s popularity also rose.
The remaining members also expressed their agreement one by one.
“Then let’s go with Harding in this election.”
So the Republican presidential nominee was decided in a smoke-filled room.
The Democratic Party was similar.
“We must put forward someone who is as opposed to President Wilson as possible. Americans are tired of the League of Nations issue.”
“Giving up the League of Nations would be giving in to the Republican Party’s agenda!”
After tedious negotiations and discussions, James Cox was chosen as the candidate.
A character with no presence, like Harding.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was chosen as the vice presidential candidate, but no one paid much attention.
For the Democratic Party, this election was a thorny path.
American citizens were perplexed when they heard the names Harding and Cox.
What beliefs and ideologies do the two candidates have?
Nothing was known about his opinions on political issues.
“Let’s vote Republican this time. Why would we ruin the country by voting for the Democratic Party again?”
“Yeah, I don’t want to live on sugar rations. I’m sick of war.”
“By the way, have you heard that story? If you have a radio, you can listen to not only baseball broadcasts, but also news and politics…”
In that atmosphere, a Westinghouse executive sought out Warren Harding’s half-brother, Leather Buck.

“An exclusive radio interview with Westinghouse. You’re offering me $50,000 if I make it happen?”
“Yes, and I’ll give you $20,000 up front. This is purely a gesture of goodwill.”
The man in the suit bowed his head and said.
He placed his heavy briefcase on the desk.
“They are all clean items.”
“Ahem, I think it’s a bit early to ask this when the nomination of candidates has just been announced.”
Leather Buck said, tapping his briefcase.
“I’m sure your brother would be reluctant to give an exclusive interview to a particular station. Why would he choose Westinghouse over Tesla Radio and RCA?”
“Unlike a receiver, anyone can broadcast on the radio equally. Wouldn’t it be better for the public if you gave a chance to a small radio station rather than a major one?”
“Gunsora. Westinghouse doesn’t seem to be a small company.”
“We’re still a startup when it comes to radio broadcasting. Hey, bring it on.”
As the man snapped his fingers, a subordinate waiting behind him came holding something.
Porcelain that looks old-fashioned at first glance.
“This is one of the ceramics recently excavated in China. It is over two hundred years old, and I brought a separate certificate of authenticity with me.”
“No, what is this…”
Leather Buck said with a smile.
He nodded with a light sigh as if he had no choice.
“I’ll talk to my brother about the exclusive interview. It might be a bit much to only go to major broadcasting stations.”
“I think so too.”
The two shook hands with smiles on their faces.

“Oh, Alf. Did you see the paper this morning?”
“Not yet. Why?”
“I thought so. Hey, take a look at this quickly.”
What’s going on?
I took the morning paper that Richter handed me.
[Jack Morgan, lost his entire fortune to his two children and went bankrupt!!!]
Morgan
children
bankruptcy?
What the hell does this mean?
I can clearly read the letters, but I don’t understand them.
“Am I dreaming?”
“Hey, look at the picture under the headline.”
“picture?”
When I looked down a little more, I saw a black and white photo.
Jack Morgan with kids and capitalism, ho!
Oh, you were talking about board games.
Journalists, your titles are the same in the 20th and 21st centuries.
“It doesn’t look like it was taken on purpose.”
Was this a coincidence that he was playing with the kids? Jack Morgan looked beaming in the photo.
“That’s a ten million dollar picture.”
“Wow, ten million dollars?”
“Even a ten million dollar advertisement wouldn’t have had this effect.”
I said, pointing to the newspaper.
Morgan was also initially against capitalism, ho!
‘A friendly image of playing with children.’
It was a huge boon for Jack Morgan, who was considered the devil of capitalism.
Now you too must have felt the power of PR.
“If only I could shout out loud…”
Just then a voice was heard from outside the door.
“Sir, Mr. Tesla has come to see you.”
“Please guide me inside! I don’t remember making a separate schedule.”
The door opened and Tesla came in.
“It’s been a while since Mr. Tesla showed up so suddenly. Please have a seat.”
I looked at Tesla.
He sat down and tapped his fingers rhythmically on the table.
A gesture that suggests that it is uncomfortable to not do so.
Tesla said, embarrassed, as if he noticed my gaze.
“I’m sorry about this. It’s a habit, so I do it without thinking… When I walk, I count my steps, and when I eat, I can’t eat without calculating the volume of my plate and coffee cup.”
“You must be having a hard time.”
It seems like all geniuses have obsessive-compulsive disorder. Why did you come here so suddenly?
“Are you having any problems with your Tesla radio?”
“It’s not a big problem right now. The radios are sold out as soon as they come out of the factory, and we’ve managed to keep production levels up.”
Tesla shook his head.
“As Mr. Hitler said, radio sales skyrocketed during the election period. Well, skyrocketing is an understatement. There were so many people in the store that we had to change to a reservation system.”
“There is no topic that people are more interested in than politics.”
I answered with a smile.
Especially in this day and age.
But I don’t think Tesla came in person to report the situation.
“There was a small problem that arose, and that is why I came to tell Mr. Hitler.”
He said carefully.
“Have you heard that Westinghouse is starting a new radio station?”
“I heard it.”
Was it KDKA station?
The first commercial radio station established in history.
‘It’s behind the times, though, with the Tesla radio I made.’
Westinghouse was not part of RCA or the Radio Union I led.
“You probably don’t have FM technology either. Isn’t that a big threat?”
“It’s not a big threat, but Westinghouse has connections to Warren Harding’s half-brother.”
Tesla said.
“Rumor has it that Westinghouse is preparing an exclusive interview with Harding this time.”
“An exclusive interview?”
This could be a bit of a problem.
If it were just an interview, it would be fine, but this is exclusive.
“Since we are selling the radio receiver anyway, it doesn’t matter which radio station it appears on…”
“But that doesn’t mean you’ve given up on the broadcasting business, right?”
I said.
Radio receivers and broadcasting business.
The two had to work together to create a synergy effect and keep moving forward.
“By the way, that’s a clever plan. An exclusive interview. Looks like you spent quite a bit of money on it.”
Since a head-on confrontation is difficult, are you going to target a niche market?
Harding’s half-brother.
‘Harding was swayed by those around him throughout history.’
It was clear that if his half-brother had actively tried to persuade him, he would have fallen for Westinghouse’s trick.
This election-related issue will also be monopolized.
Radio broadcasting was just beginning, but Westinghouse was a much bigger business than I was.
It was famous for its power plants and infrastructure projects.
Their financial power must be solid as well.
“We need to come up with some kind of solution, too.”
“If there is a solution…”
Tesla again tapped the table regularly.
He said.
“Westinghouse got the interview for the Republican candidate, so why don’t we go after the Democrat? We’ll get an exclusive interview with James Cox.”
“It’s not a bad suggestion, but it’s missing something.”
There’s no point in us getting an exclusive interview with the Democratic candidate now.
Rather, Westinghouse will rise to the same level as us.
‘The Democratic Party isn’t very popular.’
Harding isn’t exactly a name-caller, but James Cox is even worse.
How many 21st century Americans know the name James Cox?
We need something bigger.
Things people these days can’t even imagine.
“Westinghouse got the exclusive interview. So why not go beyond that? Go for something bigger, more innovative, more fun.”
“If it’s more than that…”
I took a cigarette out of my pocket and lit it. It was the first cigarette I had smoked in a long time.
‘I didn’t want to use this card anymore.’
I guess I’ll have to take out the card I was planning to use in the next presidential election.
In this election, no matter what, we had to take the lead in radio.
The current official population of the United States is approximately 100 million.
Even if only one-third of them listen to the radio, that’s over 30 million people.
The presidential election is a golden opportunity to make radio a trend.
“What exactly are you talking about?”
“It’s a discussion.”
It’s so obvious in the 21st century.
Presidential debate between presidential candidates.
But this is something that has never been attempted in this era.
The first radio presidential debate.
How many listeners can you attract?
“I propose a broadcast program where presidential candidates gather at one broadcasting station to debate.”
“Is that possible?”
Tesla asked with his eyes wide open. His fingers that had been tapping the desk also stopped completely.
“We should make it possible. But it will take some planning. First, Mr. Tesla, go back to the broadcasting station…”
After several dozen minutes.
Tesla stood up, looking several years older.
“If it works, it will be a huge success. Every American will want to buy a radio.”
“And you’ll hear the Tesla radio program. The exclusive Westinghouse interview will be neatly buried.”
Tesla nodded and staggered out of the office.
I picked up the phone and spoke to the operator.
“Please connect me to Hearst Castle in California.”
Wait a moment.
Then a familiar voice was heard.
“Hey, Hitler. You’re calling at a good time. There’s no news these days.”
Hurst said in a cheerful tone.
“This is the most boring election period I’ve ever been in. I was thinking of hiring an anarchist to set off a bomb.”
“I have something better than a bomb.”
This guy is scary, he looks like he’s going to explode a real bomb.
Well, the ability to create such issues helps me.
“Huh? What are you planning to do this time? I’ll raise you well, so tell me quickly.”
“It’s not something yet. It’s more of an idea.”
I added in a calm tone.
How would you describe a radio debate?
“What do you think about this opportunity to prove that America is the greatest democracy in the world?”
