Episode 49
Episode 49 – Uncle Hitler
August 1920.
In British India, a man named Mohandas Gandhi led a civil disobedience movement against the British Empire.
Accordingly, Muslim and Hindu locals who were working for the colonial government submitted their resignations and returned the medals they had received.
The streets were quiet, and there was a strange tension in the air.
A similar mood hung over the streets of America.
“Isn’t it time yet?”
“It’ll start soon. Come and sit down quickly.”
Everyone seemed to have made a pact and rushed to the same building.
The grooms also headed toward the building, tying their horses to the telephone pole.
The horses left alone looked around and waggled their tails.
The same goes for newsboys and shoe shiners.
Places that were once bars have now been transformed into radio restaurants.
A place where guests can come to listen to the radio at any time.
“So who was the host?”
“I think it was Walter Lippmann. He was an editorial writer for the New York World.”
“Oh, that Jew? I didn’t know we would be entrusting society to that guy.”
“He’s the most neutral character possible.”
The stores with radios were bustling with people talking.
Other store owners who did not have a receiver also closed their doors and came rushing in.
Soon a voice rang out from the large machine.
“Shhh! Everyone be quiet! It’s time to get started.”
The bustling store suddenly became quiet.
“This is Tesla Radio from New York. Today, I am speaking to you through a cutting-edge technology called radio. The radio that saved the passengers of the Titanic is now opening a new political history. In today’s debate, we have two candidates…”
In the silence, only the man’s deep voice could be heard.
“The Democratic candidate, James Cox, and the Republican candidate, Warren Harding.”
“My fellow citizens, today I am participating in the first ever presidential debate in the United States via radio.”
“I am also happy to be able to share my voice in this way. Today’s debate with Candidate Harding…”
As the two candidates finished their greetings, people poured out their words as if they had been waiting for it.
“That red guy’s gone! That’s great!”
“A communist?”
“What is that? Isn’t there a guy locked up in a cell?”
One of the men said with a sly grin.
“The Socialist Party of America or something.”
The Socialist Party of America has been arguing for weeks that they too should be included in the debate.
Socialist candidate Eugene Debs remains in prison.
He ran for president from prison, and his supporters called for debates in the prison.
But their wish was not fulfilled.
“Shh! I can’t hear you!”
Male, female.
Children, old people.
Everyone gathered around the radio and listened.
“Senator Harding, what are your thoughts on the League of Nations?”
“My view is the same as that of most Americans. The League of Nations would most likely draw the United States into the European conflict. Of course, in theory it would be a noble idea, but…”
Company building.
An illegal bar selling bootleg alcohol.
In the countryside there are a few government buildings.
Everyone gathered around the radio. There was no place to even step around the receiver.
After two hours of heated debate, people let out a sigh of relief.
The car started moving again, and the horses walked along, breathing heavily.
“When was the next discussion?”
“I think you said tomorrow or the day after. Then let’s meet again at the same time.”
“You’re not even talking about Prohibition.”
“Didn’t everyone say that was a good idea back then? The problem is that it’s hard to put into practice.”
There are three scheduled discussions in total.
More people gathered at the Tesla store ahead of the next discussion.
Banks also actively participated in this craze.
“We’ve launched a new loan product for radio receivers! Just ten dollars a month! For just ten dollars, you can have a receiver installed in your home!”
The ore radio kits, which buyers had to assemble themselves, also sold out quickly.
Accordingly, radio shops selling radio parts sprang up all over the streets.
Tesla radios have been sold on the black market for more than five times their original price.
Radio-related magazines also spread like wildfire.
“You’ve already read the latest Radio Magazine? How was this episode of Rocketman?”
“It’s getting more and more interesting. I hope the next issue comes out soon.”
The craze for radio.
This sentiment was not only prevalent among white people.

“How about we use the radio more actively?”
“Let’s contact that guy, Hitler.
The black men nodded.
From work clothes to formal attire.
The men’s clothing varied.
“Isn’t Hitler a white man after all? Why would he care about Negroes like us?”
“Didn’t he say in the book that it’s a black cat and a white cat? It doesn’t matter if the cat is black or white, as long as they have abilities.”
“Whether black or white, he’s talking about exploiting people to make money. He also said he respected President Lincoln, and that was clearly a way to score points with the American people.”
Several men shouted in raised voices.
“Didn’t Director Griffith say he was making a movie about that guy?”
All the men spat or muttered curses at the name Griffith.
“Isn’t the KKK reaching out again with its evil hand? We must be very careful about who we join hands with.”
Everyone’s eyes turned to the top seat.
WEB DUBOIS.
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
The founder of the NAACP and the man known as the soul of black people.
He opened his mouth slowly.
“I heard that there was a black jazz musician named Louis Armstrong who was close to Hitler. Why don’t we call Armstrong and ask him if it’s true?”
He continued to speak.
“I’ll invite him here myself after that. I’ll see how he reacts and I’ll know how sincere he is.”
“You are right.”
All the men nodded.
A man who had been giving an impassioned speech stood up and said.
“I bet Hitler won’t give a shit.”

New York
Hitler Company
The office was filled with the sound of gorgeous trumpets. This was something I couldn’t help but applaud.
“Louis, every time I hear your skills, they’re like a drug. Once I hear it, I can’t help but keep listening.”
“Oh, it’s a lot better than when I first heard it in Mississippi.”
Richter nodded vigorously from the side.
“Tesla Bar, I heard you get requests to play at broadcasting stations every day. Do you get paid enough?”
“Rather, I receive so much that it feels burdensome. There is a limit to how much I can spend on alcohol.”
Armstrong scratched his head with the hand holding his trumpet.
“I owe you two a great debt of gratitude. Mr. Pops fought for me when I was kicked out of the broadcasting station last time…”
“I’ve said it many times, but that was my apology, Louis. For being treated so rudely at my station.”
The person in charge is fired.
It ended well, though.
Jazz music gradually became popular and spread to the general public.
“I should learn how to play an instrument too.”
“Pops, how about you try playing the trumpet like me? I’ll teach you personally.”
“You’ll look at it yourself?”
Getting private lessons from Louis Armstrong. I think it would be hard to do that even if you paid a billion dollars.
“Considering what I’ve received from Pops so far, shouldn’t I give you at least this much?”
Armstrong scratched the back of his head again, seeming to have something to say.
“Louis, is there anything on your mind these days?”
“Actually, I got a call from the NAACP a while back. They wanted to know who Pops was.”
“If it’s the NAACP…”
Wasn’t it a group for people of color?
Among them, I think I belonged to the moderate group.
Are you investigating me there?
“Isn’t Pops the most successful person in the radio business right now? It seems like you want to do something related to radio.”
“That makes sense.”
We also talked about black cats and white cats in Carnegie’s book.
I’m sure those people are interested in radio too.
“Well, then, how about stopping by for a bit before voting?”
Richter intervened.
“Well, you can just listen to it yourself and decide. I don’t think you’ll lose anything.”
“You’ll know when you go.”
No matter how liberal my stance is, I can’t seem too pro-black.
I guess I’ll have to go there tomorrow and draw the line.
The next morning.
I stopped in Manhattan with Louis Armstrong and Richter.
Blacks, Jews, Italians, etc.
A place where many people of color and immigrants gather.
Chinese and Asians from Southeast Asia were also seen everywhere on the streets.
“Hey, is that guy…”
“Isn’t that Hitler? The guy in that newspaper.”
As I walked down the street, people gathered around me.
Even the grim faces of the Burns detectives couldn’t stop their interest.
“That’s Hitler’s uncle!”
“That Hitler from Disney & Hitler?”
Children began to crowd in greater numbers than adults. Their faces looked strangely familiar.
“I think we’ve all seen this somewhere.”
“You know, the guys you used to run errands for when you were starting the company. And there are Levine’s friends too.”
“Before founding the company…”
Was that when you were deceiving Morgan?
I used to pretend to be suspicious while asking children to run all kinds of errands for me.
“Well, you gave them a lot of money. I wonder how many kids there were back then… It must have been hundreds at least. You didn’t really set a limit on how many people there were.”
“It was because we fought and hit each other over who would come in first.”
At that time, I was living off of other people’s property.
If you put a number limit on the number of people, the kids will rush to do the work first and it will quickly become chaos.
Just as Richter was about to speak again, those who appeared to be the children’s parents approached.
“I heard you’ve been sponsoring our kids for several months. I was hoping to stop by sometime to say thank you…”
“These apples just arrived today. Please try one.”
“During the last Ponzi scam, one of my relatives was also affected by Mr. Hitler…”
“If you come to our pizza shop, we’ll give you a free pizza! What flavor do you like?”
I found myself shaking hands with the crowd of people.
No, I was just using the kids to bluff Morgan.
‘Can you say that you sponsored it?’
I can’t say it honestly, I want to.
The crowd keeps growing.
It seems like a fan meeting was held.
The children looked at me with pure, innocent eyes.
Ugh, my conscience is pricking me.
“Thank you all for your hospitality. But I have something urgent to do…”
I tried to get back to my car, but it was already blocked by the crowd.
The Burns detectives shouted as they fought through the oncoming waves.
“Come this way! We’ll clear the way!”
But more and more children came in, filling the empty seats.
“Are you here because of the Mickey Mouse Club?!”
“Mickey Mouse?! I joined the club too!”
“Did Mr. Hitler draw a picture of Mickey?! Is there some kind of event today?”
“Here, please sign this lunch box!”
This won’t work.
I have to run away.
As we walked quickly, the children followed us, smiling as if they were having fun.
As the crowd grew larger, the number of people coming to watch also increased.
“Isn’t that guy famous? He created a radio or something.”
“Radio? So that guy is the one who started the debate?”
“Wow, wow!”
“Guys! Don’t follow me!”
Even when I shouted, the children followed me, cheering.
Wasn’t there a scene like this in the movie Rocky 2?
It’s scary because I’m doing it myself.
Anyone who sees him would think he’s a piper.
“Eww!”
Only after I reached the heart of Harlem could I finally catch my breath.
Richter came running, panting.
“So, is Uncle Hitler okay? He runs so fast, it’s hard to keep up.”
“I think I now understand why being a celebrity is hard.”
I said, gasping for breath.
“But, why did you run away? Everyone was welcoming you.”
“I didn’t really help those people. I feel guilty.”
“Well, even if it’s hypocrisy…”
Richter shrugged.
“Isn’t it a good thing to give bread to a hungry person? In this town, it’s hard to even make ends meet from day to day.”
“That may be the case, but…..”
I couldn’t help but chuckle.
Maybe my hypocrisy will do some good.
“Then let’s continue to work hypocritically in the future.”
