Episode 7 – The Million Dollar Man
“The car is impressive.”
Richter and I sat side by side in the backseat of the car.
In front is a driver and a muscular man.
“This is a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. It’s from 1919.”
“It’s the latest.”
It’s quiet and noiseless compared to 21st century cars. If I earn more money, I’ll buy this model.
‘I guess there’s no Lamborghini or Porsche yet.’
I guess the only cars that are famous for luxury are Rolls-Royce and Lincoln?
Most common people will drive Fords.
“Do all Morgan bankers drive such expensive cars?”
“We are detectives working for Chairman Morgan.”
The muscular man turned and handed me his business card.
Polite attitude.
Morgan Burns International Private Investigation Agency.
The name is Waylon Smith.
The ones who followed me were also these guys.
Nowhere are detectives as powerful as in America.
The famous Pinkerton Company was even in charge of protecting President Lincoln.
It was not much different from modern PMCs and private military companies.
“I guess you’re not part of Morgan.”
“We always work for the highest bidder, and Chairman Morgan has always been the highest bidder.”
“Then you will be working with me soon.”
Cold reaction even to my jokes.
It’s a bit chilly.
The car stopped in a quiet atmosphere.
The Corner, 23 Wall Street.
Morgan Bank headquarters.
It’s not as big as I thought.
It feels like a small palace made of marble.
Even at this late hour, the building was filled with bright light.
“Which of you two is the greater?”
“What do you mean higher…”
Do you think Richter and I are a real spy organization?
Or the mafia?
“There is no one higher than me.”
“Oh, Alf. You’re the one who made the plan. I just don’t know what to do.”
Richter whispered in a small voice.
“I’ll just wait here.”
“You’re really scared. Okay, I understand.”
“Okay, let’s go in through the back door.”
I followed Smith deeper into the building.
Finally, past the marble and glass partitions, we reach the top floor.
“This is the room.”
Senior Partner’s Office.
How many people have entered this room so far?
‘JP Morgan meets Hitler.’
Could there be a more awkward combination than this?
I opened the door, humming a tune.
***
The first thing I saw was a portrait of Pierpont Morgan.
A nose of enormous size.
‘I must have reduced it while drawing the portrait.’
Is that the extent of the reduction?
Jack Morgan stood with his back to the desk.
Like his father Pierpont, he is of great stature.
“Adolf Hitler. Born in Braunau am Ing., Austria-Hungary.”
He said.
“Both his biological father and mother died. He had little contact with his family and worked as a third-rate painter. When the war began, he enlisted in the Bavarian army. He was a liaison officer and received the Iron Cross 2nd and 1st class. He entered the United States about four months ago.”
“Did the Burns detectives investigate this? They’re not bad.”
I didn’t know I would investigate this far in such a short period of time.
How did you get the data from Germany and Austria?
The security must have been enormous.
“What on earth are you?”
Jack Morgan turned to look at me, his eyes weary.
“I see you received my letter.”
“I caught a man in a nearby warehouse last night. He was carrying a huge bomb on his wagon.”
Morgan frowned.
“Let me ask you again. Who are you? Are you in league with that terrorist?”
“If I was in league with that guy, why would I have written a letter to the chairman?”
“It would make sense if he was trying to get money by reporting his colleagues. Or maybe this whole thing was a set-up to deceive me.”
Morgan blood isn’t going anywhere.
A skeptical yet sharp observation.
“Didn’t you say you caught the culprit? You could just ask him directly.”
My legs hurt.
Don’t you usually ask someone to sit down first?
I went to the chair and sat down.
“An anarchist from Italy. He claimed he did it alone, though…”
Morgan snorted.
“I don’t know if that’s true or false.”
Was this really the work of an anarchist?
Because I’m Italian.
Italians and Jews suffered the most from discrimination in America.
It is common for disaffected people to engage in terrorism.
“The police haven’t made any announcement.”
“How can we tell that half of Wall Street almost blew up? There would be chaos.”
Morgan’s tone of speech changed.
So both the arrest and the interrogation were illegal.
I don’t even need to look to see how they dealt with the terrorists.
Has there ever been a Wall Street bombing in world history?
“I’ll ask you one last time. How did you know that terrorist…”
“I’m in the business of exchanging information. Or at least that’s what I was until recently.”
“The man who was a liaison until a few months ago is now the head of the New York intelligence network?”
Morgan snorted.
I continued talking, pretending to be calm.
“Of course, that’s what it was on paper. That’s how the Reich handled it. And it wasn’t just New York. It was a much wider area.”
“…”
Germans are surprisingly well-informed. I have to keep pushing this image.
“Since the war, I have been working privately. There are people everywhere who want information.”
I said.
“I also learned about this bombing while on duty. I told the chairman only because…”
“To win my favor?”
“Let’s call it mutual assistance. Isn’t it natural for people to help each other?”
I said.
“I have a lot of information, but I don’t have the capital to use it. But you, Chairman, are the opposite.”
“As expected, it was a set-up to get my money!”
Morgan waved his hand and shouted.
A very red face.
“I’m going to throw you guys in cement right now and into the sea…”
“I completely understand why the Chairman thinks that way. I would have felt the same way too.”
Yeah, it won’t come over that easily.
It’s time to throw the bait once more.
“Then let us prove what we have.”
“Prove it, how?”
“President Wilson will soon go to France to conclude a peace treaty.”
“If you thought I didn’t even know that much…”
I raised my hand to stop him.
“I’m not done talking yet. The full-scale armistice negotiations will begin with the arrival of President Wilson.”
“…”
“What if I could tell you every single detail of the treaty?”
“You’re trying to use a trick that’s not even close. How can you predict a treaty that hasn’t even started negotiations yet? I’m planning to go as an advisor right away.”
Jack Morgan snorted.
A tone of speech that is blatantly dismissive.
“At best, they’ll just recite a few obvious terms and then later admit they were right. Even my dog can do that.”
“This is not some cheap trick. I will tell you in advance the exact contents of each clause, the amount of the compensation, and the order of the clauses.”
As I continued speaking, Morgan’s expression hardened.
“That’s impossible.”
“It is possible.”
You can recite the Treaty of Versailles by heart without even looking at a note.
I’ve seen it so many times that I’m sick of it.
Danzig becomes a free city of the League of Nations, and renounces Alsace-Lorraine and its colonies.
Air Force possession ban and astronomical compensation.
The terms of such treaties helped Hitler and the far right come to power.
“You can use it right here, right now.”
“…Let me try it out.”
After a while.
Morgan tapped the desk and read what I had written.
A much calmer expression.
“What if what you say is wrong?”
“Then why don’t you just use your loyal detectives? Tracking down a single ‘anarchist’ like me shouldn’t be a big deal.”
“You’ll find out in a month. In the meantime, it’s best not to think about anything else.”
Are you thinking of tailing me?
Well, I can tolerate that much.
“I’m going to go now.”
“It was an honor to meet you.”
I obediently left the room, seeing the look in his eyes telling me to get out.
Richter was still surrounded by detectives on the first floor.
A normal person surrounded by bullies.
I couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Oh, what happened?”
“It ended well.”
“Chairman Morgan just gave me the money?”
“Not yet. But it will be soon.”
Full-scale negotiations will begin in France in a month.
How will Morgan react if everything I say comes true?
‘No matter how famous a fortune teller is, he wouldn’t be this accurate.’
Come to think of it, astrology was popular in this era. I guess I could give up investing and become a fortune teller.
A fortune teller who manipulates politicians behind the scenes.
That wouldn’t be bad either.
Feels like America’s Rasputin.
“Since I’m here, why don’t I open an account at Morgan Bank?”
I dragged Richter, still in a daze, to the bank window.
A well-groomed employee greeted us. At first glance, we could tell he was wearing an expensive suit and watch.
The teller glanced at me and said in an apologetic tone.
“I’m sorry, but our counter operating hours are currently closed. And our bank is only accepting referrals from existing customers or…”
A look that seems to be evaluating.
“You must deposit at least $1 million to open a demand deposit account.”
“Is that so?”
Are you saying that people without money should just get lost?
Of course, since you’re wearing a thick coat.
Well, it’s not urgent right now.
“Then let’s see you next month.”
The employee tilted his head at my words as if he thought I was some kind of weirdo.
“Oh, my heart was going to burst. I thought you were being tortured up there.”
As we exited the building, Richter began to speak.
“It was a bit dangerous.”
If I had been a little careless, I would have been in trouble. It’s a good thing I had prepared my image in advance.
“So what are you going to do from now on?”
“You’ve been working yourself to death for months. How about taking a vacation?”
I said with a smile.
Coming to the US but being stuck in New York is a bit weird.
Anyway, I had to wait a month to get an answer from Morgan.
“A vacation? I didn’t know you’d suggest something like that.”
“What’s the point of just hanging out…”
America in this day and age is the golden goblin itself.
It’s full of people, technologies, and resources that have yet to be discovered.
‘Maybe it’s a gold mine that only I can mine.’
I guess I’ll have to go out and dig them up one by one. First up, the small gold mines.
No, I wouldn’t say it’s small.
“How about Kansas City?”
“Kansas City? Is there anything famous there?”
“I don’t know what’s famous now, but it will become famous soon.”
The father of American animation.
The emperor of the entertainment empire is there.
I looked at Richter and asked.
“Have you ever seen an animated movie?”
