dripping.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door.
“The Duke of Anstice and the Lady of Maynard.”
The door opened with a warning, and the Duke of Anstis and Lady Veronica came in. It seemed that the long confrontation with Duke Franz was over.
“You’re here? Are you finished?”
“Yeah, for now. Have you been waiting here the whole time?”
Miss Veronica asked me in surprise.
“No. While I was waiting, I looked around the market.”
“okay?”
Miss Veronica, who was relieved, fixed her gaze on my head. Then she smiled as if she understood.
“But that’s fortunate. I was really worried that I might have said something unnecessary and hurt you.”
“Hey, it’s okay. I should have guessed, but I didn’t, that’s my mistake. I’ve forgotten everything, so don’t worry about it.”
Even though I spoke with a bright smile, Miss Veronica couldn’t shake off her feeling of apology.
“So what happens now?”
“Now that the confrontation is over, the trial will begin soon.”
It was the Duke of Anstis who answered in place of Lady Veronica.
“At the request of the Duke of Berzel and I, we have brought forward the date as much as possible, so you won’t have to wait too long.”
“okay.”
I heard that Alex had already prepared enough evidence, so there seemed to be no point in dragging out the time.
Because you never know what Duke Franz might do.
“So are you going back now?”
“That’s right. It took longer than I thought.”
Alex answered, checking the time. It was already past four o’clock.
“Then go.”
“yes.”
When Alex suggested it, everyone started moving.
After returning to Berzel Manor, Alex went straight up to the drawing room to speak with the Duke of Anstis.
“Claire.”
“yes?”
Just as I was about to ask if we could go in, Miss Veronica grabbed my hand and pulled me in.
Without knowing English, I followed Miss Veronica up the stairs and into her room.
Anyway, the destination was the same so it didn’t matter, but I couldn’t figure out why Miss Veronica insisted on taking my hand, so I opened my eyes wide and looked at her.
After the girl closed the door and went inside, she looked around just in case, then grabbed my hand and led me to the sofa.
“Sit down.”
“yes yes.”
First, I sat on the sofa as Miss Veronica said. Miss Veronica soon sat down next to me.
“Where did you and the Duke go while we were arguing?”
Miss Veronica’s voice was full of laughter.
My face grew hot for no reason as I understood what Miss Veronica meant by that question.
“How did you know?”
“There was a pin on your head that I hadn’t seen before. But it was done sloppily, so it didn’t look like it was done by you.”
“That’s right. There was a pin.”
I remembered the pin in my hair and raised my hand to touch my hair.
“What happened?”
“Alex and I were looking around the market after leaving the guard post earlier. I saw this being sold at a stall, so I bought it. That was it.”
Even though there was nothing else to do and that was really the end of it, for some reason he spoke as if making excuses.
I was worried that the young lady might misunderstand, so I kept an anxious look at her face.
But fortunately, Miss Veronica smiled gently.
“I’m glad you still look okay. The hairpin suits you well, too. But I guess I’ll have to put the hairpin back in.”
I laughed too, hearing Miss Veronica’s little laugh.
Then the girl reached out and took out the pin Alex had given me.
A gentle hand followed, inserting a pin.
Certainly, Miss Veronica and Alex’s skills seemed to be different.
Even though the young lady probably never had to put the pin in herself, she did it much more reliably than Alex did.
“Are you feeling better now?”
“Yeah. Pretty.”
“Thank you, miss.”
“No. By the way, I think things are going well between you and Duke Berzel.”
I moved my lips for a moment at the seemingly suggestive words. I didn’t want to hide it from Miss Veronica.
“Actually, I had a conversation with Alex. He asked me what I thought of him and I gave him my honest answer.”
“You said you liked me.”
Miss Veronica let out a small gasp.
I smiled shyly and nodded.
“Yes. And I also told you that you know what I’m thinking. You said you were going to talk to Alex later. I thought Alex should know that too.”
“Yeah… … . It’s better to know. It’s easier to talk that way. Good job.”
Miss Veronica whispered affectionately.
“What happened to Duke Franz?”
“You won’t admit it. But what can we do? The evidence we have presented is too strong. And the witnesses and evidence are clear. And above all, we have Lord Kruger.”
“That’s fortunate.”
It was something I already knew, but it was reassuring to hear it again from Miss Veronica’s mouth.
That was when.
Knock knock, there was a knock on the door. I turned my head to see who it was, and then I heard Abina’s voice.
“Miss, Miss Christine has arrived.”
“They told me to come in.”
As soon as I gave permission, the door opened and Christine came in with a worried look on her face.
“I… … Claire.”
First, Christine came inside and stammered and called my name.
“Come here and sit down.”
He walked up to Christine and guided her to the sofa.
Christine obediently followed me and sat down on the sofa.
“What brings you here?”
Since returning to the Duke of Berzel, Christine has never come to see me first.
I, too, had a lot to worry about, so I didn’t go see Christine.
We met once in the greenhouse, but Sir Kruger came right away and we quickly parted ways.
I wondered why she came looking for me.
Christine lowered her head and clenched her small fists tightly, trying to suppress her emotions.
“Christine?”
When I called her again, a drop of water fell on Christine’s hand. I couldn’t help but wonder what it meant.
“Christine, are you okay?”
I was taken aback by Christine’s sudden burst into tears. But I sat down next to her, took out a handkerchief, and gave it to her, thinking that I had to comfort her.
“Why are you crying?”
“… … I was wrong.”
“yes?”
After a moment of silence, the only thing Christine could say was an apology.
“What do you mean?”
“I was wrong. It was because of me. My brother hurt the Duke of Berzel and Claire.”
There was a hint of moisture in Christine’s voice. I couldn’t speak for a while, even though I knew she was wrong.
“I’ll apologize. Can you forgive me?”
I let out a small breath as I looked at her slightly trembling body. Then I raised my hand and lightly patted Christine’s back.
I had no idea what to say.
Then Miss Veronica opened her mouth.
“Lady Christine. There is a misunderstanding. Lord Kruger’s mistake will not go away just because Christine apologizes.”
“… … .”
Christine bit her lip at Miss Veronica’s firm voice.
“No, Lord Kruger. Jade Robelin is trying to pay the price for her crimes in order to clear her name. Jade Robelin must have had to think hard before making that decision.”
As sad as it was for Christine, the young lady wasn’t wrong.
The best Sir Kruger could do was confess.
The best way to right what he did while also protecting Christine.
“And it’s clear that there were people who were harmed by this. Blaming them and covering up the incident is disrespectful to the victims and to Jade Robelin, who is justly seeking punishment.”
“… … I’m sorry. I… … . I was scared that you would leave again… … .”
Christine muttered quietly, swallowing back her tears as best she could.
For a while, the only sound in the room was Christine’s crying.
I, who was between Miss Veronica and Christine, felt the need to calm Christine down first.
“Sir Kruger has confessed and has a favor to ask of you, Alex and Duke Berzel.”
Christine belatedly raised her head and looked at me. Her face, covered in tears, looked even more pitiful today.
I smiled faintly as I straightened her messy bangs with my hands.
“It is said that Christine asked to be restored to the title of Countess of Robel and to be able to manage her wealth well. And the Duke of Berzel accepted.”
“Did your brother ask you to do that?”
Christine blinked her swollen eyes as if she was hearing this for the first time.
“Yes. It was a difficult decision even for Duke Berzel.”
As I spoke with confidence, Christine hesitated, her lips moving, then quickly closed.
“Isn’t it Christine’s job to make sure that Sir Kruger has a safe place to return to until he pays his price?”
Christine seemed to be greatly shocked by what I said. Then she bit her lower lip. It seemed as if she was swallowing her emotions.
“… … I’m sorry. I’ll apologize again for the bad things you did. I’m really sorry, Claire.”
Christine, who had been silent for a long time, spoke with difficulty.
“all right.”
I patted Christine’s back gently and waited until she stopped crying.
