The servant realized that ‘Maximilian’ was the man who had just been begging for a chance and his life while wearing a cloak and ran over quickly.
Just before burying the coffin in the ground, Anton gestured to the priest who was about to recite a prayer. The priest approached him, bowing his head.
“What is it?”
“The burial will be postponed until next time, so you should leave now for today.”
“Yes?”
“Your Majesty.”
The expression of the butler who had been listening to the conversation right next to him distorted. Anton firmly spoke once more.
“Go away. When the time comes, I will call you again.”
“Your Majesty. You must let the young lady go. Please let her rest in peace.”
“My daughter! I brought her into the world, so it is my will when I let her go!”
Anton glared at the butler with bloodshot eyes. The priest quickly retreated, fearing that the anger would spread to himself.
‘It seems to be true that the head of the Embly family went mad after his daughter died.’
Even if you take care of it with magic, the body of the dead is bound to smell bad. The body should have been buried long ago. The priest clicked his tongue and took the scriptures and left Embly Castle.
In the end, the funeral was a futile affair. The coffin containing Rosalind went back into the castle instead of into the ground. Many servants whispered to each other after seeing this, but no one dared tell Anton that his actions were wrong.
“Go, my lord… …”
Maximilian was dragged in front of Anton by the knights, trembling like a paper doll.
Anton picked up his scabbard and struck him in the head. He repeated this several times. Later, he even seemed numb, as if he was doing something he had to do.
Soon, the scabbard was soaked with blood, and Anton threw it away.
“Ugh!”
“Tell me. What did you say earlier?”
“… There is an ancient magic that has been passed down from generation to generation in Attila.”
Maximilian gasped for a long time before coming to his senses and crying. Blood was streaming down his forehead and head, but no one cared.
Anton gestured as if to tell him to try again.
“As you know, reviving the dead is a taboo among magicians, but taboos are taboos because they can be broken. Attila used that magic to come back to life.”
“He said he used soul transfer magic.”
“That’s all a lie.”
Maximilian said firmly.
“Soul transfer magic is literally a legend, and not a single person has ever succeeded. Attila made that up to hide the forbidden magic he had realized.” Maximilian
licked his tongue like a snake and pleaded. Anton was clearly half-sane, but he still had enough wits to believe what he was saying.
“Is there any evidence that that magic exists?”
“Of course.”
As if he had been waiting, Maximilian took out a piece of paper from his bosom and handed it to Anton. It looked worn and would crumble if touched.
Anton took it and examined its contents, but there was little he could understand.
“Unfortunately, the forbidden magic book I obtained from Attila only has the first page. If you doubt the contents, call the wizards under your command to check. If they see this, they will surely admit that forbidden magic is written in it.”
“Yes, that aside. It’s already been a month since Rosalind died. So can she come back to life?”
“Atila came back to life after three months. It’s a magic that takes a long time to do, so it’s possible if you preserve her body well.”
Maximilian answered smoothly without hesitation. Anton continued the conversation with Maximilian, desperate for anything.
“Where is Rosalind’s soul that she can be brought back even after she died?”
“I don’t know that much. But what is certain is that Attila knew the method and even succeeded.”
Reason insisted that Maximilian’s words were false, but Anton felt as if he had prepared himself for it. It was like a ray of light shining in a deep, dark pit.
He wanted to cling to even the slightest possibility. So he immediately brought the wizards of Embly and handed them the paper Maximilian had shown him.
Their eyes widened greatly when they looked at the paper.
“What is written on that paper?”
“It is written about a forbidden… magic.”
“What forbidden magic?”
“It is a magic that can bring the dead back to life. But, my lord, don’t you know? That magic is not a magic that exists in reality. It is nothing more than a legend that has been passed down from a very long time ago.”
“Then what is written on that paper?”
Anton’s voice grew louder. How could such a clear method of reviving the dead not exist in reality? He glared at the wizards.
“This one piece of paper doesn’t prove anything. Just because someone wrote about a horse with horns doesn’t mean it exists in reality, right?”
The old wizard calmly replied to Anton’s words. However, Anton was already losing track of those rational words.
“Then how can we explain Attila’s return from the dead?”
“That’s… …”
“Elector Attila returned to his original body through soul transfer magic. It’s hard to say that he came back to life since he didn’t die.” A
fierce battle of spears and shields followed. The wizards explained the forbidden magic diligently, but the more they did, the more Anton’s heart was drawn to the one piece of paper Maximilian had handed him.
“Useless things! Even if the probability was very low, if such a method existed, you should have come running to me first and told me!”
“… … I’m sorry. “Your Majesty.”
In the end, they had decided what they could say. Anton sent the wizards out of the room and loitered around the window.
The roses had already withered and only yellow petals remained. Looking at them, he suddenly felt angry.
It was so unfair and infuriating that only Leonard Attila had come back alive that way.
Why should he be the only one to live when my daughter had died in the same way?
“Bring Maximilian back.”
The servant bowed and left the room, then returned with Maximilian. A faint smile hung on Maximilian’s lips.
“Your Majesty. I never lie.”
“Is Attila the only one who knows how to use that magic?”
“Yes. Since it was passed down only to the master, I do not know the entire story.”
“Then if Attila is going to use magic to bring my daughter back to life.”
“I need his disciple.”
“For blackmail?”
Anton groaned briefly and rubbed his chin. It was a method he tried to protect Daniel, but it was still unsatisfactory. It was risky because he couldn’t be sure how Attila would react.
“That’s right. Although it failed because of Evra’s treasure, that method is the only way to control Attila.”
“Evra’s treasure?”
Maximilian briefly explained the bracelet Cordelia had in response to Anton’s question.
Anton opened his mouth slightly in surprise. Even as a layman in magic, it was surprising.
“Does something like that exist?”
“Yes. It’s something very rare and hard to obtain, but he gave it to his disciple. It’s proof that Attila cares for his disciple very much.”
Maximilian took a deep breath and spoke in a low voice.
“That’s why we have to catch Vasquez and feed her Tarcia.”
“But if we have that precious item, how can we kidnap her and poison her? It won’t be easy to bribe the people around her.”
“We just have to call Vasquez out.”
“And then?”
“You can temporarily neutralize her magic. It won’t last long, but it will buy you enough time to subdue her and poison her.”
Anton listened to Maximilian. He was as bold as if he had planned all of this in advance, and thanks to that, the plan to kidnap Cordelia and poison her became more and more elaborate.
By the time they finished talking, the sun had already set and the moon was rising.
Anton sent Maximilian away and went into Rosaline’s room where she was lying peacefully. Rosaline looked as if she had fallen into a deep sleep because she had been cleaning herself and pouring magic on herself every day.
“Just wait a little, Rosie. We’ll meet again soon.”
* * *
Several days had passed since Cordelia had been kidnapped and escaped using Evrard’s treasure.
A lot had happened in the meantime.
Almost all of the Sirius were busy trying to clean up Wilarth, which had been devastated by the demons’ descent. Leonard was the same, so Cordelia had a hard time seeing his face.
For her safety, Cordelia returned to the Magic Covenant. Baron, of course, was not allowed into the Magic Covenant, and all the Sirius she knew, including her master, were busy, so Cordelia was locked in the lab with Candias almost every day.
Going to the common dining hall twice a day for meals was almost the only way she could meet outsiders.
“What is love?”
“What, you finally became interested in this?”
Ilias grinned sinisterly and kicked Cordelia under the table. Cordelia pushed the food she had finished eating aside and said,
“Don’t even bring up that weird ‘good relationship’ thing.”
“Strange, everyone else. Okay. Okay, so don’t go.”
Cordelia immediately got up to leave, but Ilias stopped her.
“But why all of a sudden love? Is there a guy you like?”
“It’s not that… …”
Cordelia swallowed her words. The sight of Leonard’s eyes, swaying with emotion, was piercing into a corner of her heart and she couldn’t forget it.
