“Oh. Vasquez is the famous disciple of Atile.”
“Yes.”
“Where are you going?”
“We’re going to Yevo Delim.”
“Really? That’s good timing. We’re also on our way to the capital. It’s lonely, so why don’t you come with me?”
Unlike Cordelia’s attitude of being as formal and stiff as possible, Marquis Ingrion continued the conversation with a friendly face. Cordelia didn’t like accompanying a stranger, but she was even more uncomfortable when it was Marquis Ingrion.
“I appreciate you offering to accompany me, but my father’s chronic illness has worsened and every second counts, so I don’t think it’ll be easy.”
It was a polite but clear refusal. Even so, Marquis Ingrion showed no sign of backing down.
“Is Elector Vasquez in critical condition?”
“Yes. Very much so.”
“Then it would be better if we went together. If you go with me, you will be able to arrive at Yebo Delim faster than anyone else.”
Cordelia twitched her lips invisibly. He seemed to have already decided to accompany Cordelia and did not accept her opinion. He
looked back at Beluche and Gasil. Gasil shook his head very faintly. Beluche still had no expression on his face, so it was impossible to know what he was thinking.
When Cordelia was about to refuse once more, Gasil opened his mouth.
“I am honored to walk with you, Marquis.”
“Haha. It would be nice to have someone to talk to on a boring journey. By the way, have you found a place to stay tonight?”
“No. Not yet.”
“Really? Then stay here. Sir Jeans.”
Jeans was the old knight who had been beaten by Noah. He hurried to Marquis Ingrion. The Marquis said in a generous tone.
“I am a guest who will accompany you to Yebo Delim, so you should take care of yourself.”
“Yes. I understand. “ I will show you to your room.”
“Thank you for your kindness, Marquis.”
Gasil bowed his head to Marquis Ingrion until the very end. Cordelia was angry at Gasil for setting his own schedule without consulting him, but she held it in for the time being. They had only known each other for a few days, but he was not the type of person to act arbitrarily based on his mood.
The three of them followed John’s guidance to the guest room. Gasil spoke only
after John disappeared from sight. “The Marquis Ingrion is a cruel man. He is especially unforgiving to those who oppose him.”
“It seemed so. I saw him beat my son in front of his subordinates without hesitation.”
“I apologize for accepting the Marquis’s offer without permission. However.”
“Gasil is right. If we don’t follow his orders, he will probably retaliate against us in some way. He is a mean man.”
For some reason, Beluche defended Gasil. Cordelia stared at Beluche. She was worried as she recalled the rare stories she had heard about him from her childhood.
“Is Beluche okay?”
“What?”
“I mean, Marquis Ingrion. We’re not on good terms. That… … brother, too.”
“Just think of it as a dog barking.”
He answered indifferently. Cordelia felt a little uneasy, but since the two men who knew Marquis Ingrion well were saying the same thing in unison, she was convinced.
And so, an unexpected companion appeared on the trip to Yebo Delim.
* * *
Three days had passed since she had gone to the capital with Marquis Ingrion. Contrary to her expectations that it would be uncomfortable, traveling with him was not so bad.
Above all, Marquis Ingrion had shown great favor to Cordelia, so no one treated her, not only Cordelia but also her knights, Gasil and Beluche, rudely. The same was true of Noah Ingrion, whom she had seen the first day. He would occasionally glare at Beluche, but could not bring himself to disobey his father.
“It’s truly amazing. For such a talented person to come from Vasquez.”
“You’re flattering me.”
“Haha, I know Elector Attila well, and he’s very picky. If he’s the disciple you’ve chosen, then what more could you say about his skills?”
After chatting briefly, I could understand why he was happy for Cordelia. The Marquis was openly considering Cordelia as a political connection to Attila. At first, it was just burdensome, but after a few days, I thought it wouldn’t be bad to take advantage of his favor.
Cordelia became more and more shameless, and on the third day, she was assigned a room that was almost as nice as the Marquis’s room and was resting there.
Now, in just two more days, they would finally arrive at Yevo Delrim. Cordelia rehearsed in her head several times what she would say when she saw her father’s face. It was definitely not because she thought she would cry. Rather, it was because she thought she would vent her resentment on him.
Cordelia’s heart was still deeply shocked and hurt by her father’s decision not to see his daughter in exchange for money from Leonard.
She wanted to lash out at her father for all the hurt she had received, but she didn’t want to fight until the end, knowing that she might die soon. Not for her father, but for Cordelia herself.
At that moment, a strange sound was heard through the open window.
At first, she thought it was a wild animal descending, but it was a human voice mixed in.
“You… … stupidly… . How many times… .”
“I’m sorry.”
The voice heard through the wind was definitely Belluce’s. Cordelia was about to close the window when she noticed his voice and listened.
“Whoa, you trash shouldn’t just say things.”
“I’m sorry.”
“This shouldn’t have been born in the first place. You arrogant brat. What are you doing with those eyes!”
Marquis Ingrion raised his voice in excitement, allowing Cordelia to find the two of them.
Cordelia’s eyes grew cold. At the same time, her head felt hot. Belluce was lying face down on the floor, being beaten like a dog by the Marquis.
She didn’t think twice and immediately stormed out of the room. She quickly ran down the stairs two at a time and ran straight to the backyard. She ran so fast that she was out of breath despite the short distance.
“Ingrion, haa, Marquis.”
“What’s wrong, Miss Vasquez?”
He was extremely calm, and if not for the blood clinging to the wooden sword he was holding, he looked as if they had met at mealtime. Cordelia felt disgusted by his attitude.
She caught her breath and approached Beluche, who was lying on the floor. She grabbed his blood-soaked arm and lifted him up. Beluche looked at Cordelia once and staggered to her feet. Marquis Ingrion
wiggled his eyebrows.
“I haven’t finished talking about that yet.”
“That’s it. That’s a rather harsh title to use to refer to my son.”
“Son? Hahaha. Don’t say that. I’m afraid someone might hear it.”
“Is there anyone who doesn’t know that Beluche is the proud son of Ingrion?”
I don’t know why I’m so angry. Cordelia clenched her teeth with every word she spoke. The anger boiling inside her heart kept heating up her whole body, making her hands tremble.
Marquis Ingrion threw away his half-formal speech and immediately showed his teeth.
“Watch your words. I have never allowed that bastard to have Ingrion.”
“Unless Beluce’s mother conceived her by the will of God, it is obvious who the father is. Does denying it mean the blood relationship is gone?”
“It was a mistake for me to have sex with that lowly maid, and it is the shame of my life! She is nothing but a dirty filth!”
The Marquis shouted, snorting. The more he denied Beluce’s existence, the more Cordelia’s blood boiled. She looked the Marquis straight in the eye and said,
“If you call Beluce a bastard or a filth one more time, I will not tolerate it.”
“Hahaha!”
Marquis Ingrion burst into laughter like lightning. He said with his black eyes twitching.
“Can’t you bear it? What can you do? Vasquez is falling down.”
“There’s nothing I can do right now. But when I become a high-ranking magician, a Sirius of Acheron, and a court magician, I will never forget the insult you hurled at Beluche today and I will definitely repay you with blood.”
It seemed that he had found an unbreakable will in her voice and eyes. For the first time, Marquis Ingrion hesitated. He glared at Beluche and Cordelia once and said.
“You are making a foolish choice to fight me for that.”
“Beluche Ingrion is the one who saved my life. Marquis Ingrion doesn’t seem to know this, but humans have duties to uphold.”
The Marquis’ face turned red and blue. It was no different from openly accusing him of not upholding his duties. Marquis Ingrion threw down the wooden sword he was holding.
“You’re going to drag the guy who killed my mother along. It seems you’re truly Atile’s disciple.”
Beluche flinched. Cordelia turned her head slightly to look at Beluche, then stared straight at Marquis Ingrion. Then she smiled brightly and said,
“I would gladly accept it even if he killed my father. Marquis Ingrion.”
“… … I’ll make you regret that.”
“I’m sorry, but it seems like our company ends here.”
Cordelia turned around and held onto Beluche’s limping arm tightly as she returned to the inn. Beluche whispered.
“I did something useless. That old man is persistent and petty. He definitely finds fault with me… … .”
“Why are you getting beaten?”
“… … .”
“You strangled my neck and broke my arm so well, so why are you getting beaten by such a beast? Why?”
The anger that she thought had barely subsided burned like a wildfire in her chest. If she had been slapped in the face like Noah Ingrion, she wouldn’t have been this angry. But in the scene she saw, Beluce wasn’t human.
A beast. Or an insect.
She couldn’t find any personality in Beluce, who was being trampled by a wooden sword and feet. And Beluce, who was being beaten, looked so familiar. She didn’t know why she was so annoyed by the sight of him complying as if any resistance was meaningless.
