Side Story 1. Wedding
2024.03.31.
“You’re getting married after growing up like this. I have no regrets anymore.”
Rani’s eyes were already red. On the other hand, the new bride who was getting married a few hours later was extremely indifferent.
“I’ve already done it once.”
“That’s not even marriage. If I had known that Cordelia had been so cruelly abused, I would never have let them go.”
Rani wiped her wet eyes and grumbled. After hearing belatedly what happened to Cordelia in Abrams, she was furious and insisted that Abrams be completely erased from the map.
“It’s okay. Leonard has already taken his revenge.”
It was only later that she learned that Helena Abrams had died mysteriously in the tower and Arnold Dylan had gone mad and no longer knew who he was. She knew who had done it without even asking.
“I was worried because Lady Cordelia was secretly weak-willed, but as expected, Elector Count Attila is fair and just. I feel very relieved.”
Fair and just seemed like an appropriate modifier here, but Cordelia just ignored it. Rani smiled very satisfied and said.
“I’m sure Lady Grita in heaven would be pleased as well.”
“I hope so. Oh, thank you for coming, Rani. You must be busy with the coronation ceremony.”
“The coronation ceremony is still a long way off.”
“Huh? Why? Leonard said you were nominated as the High Priest.”
“That’s true, but even if Yeratcus was nominated by the previous High Priest, there are still many ceremonies he must go through.”
“It seems different from being crowned king.”
“Similar, but different.”
While talking with her about the strange political system of Yeratcus for a long time, the topic of Pablo Vasquez’s current situation came up.
“Have you heard any news about Elector Vasquez?”
In that dry tone, where even the title of father had disappeared, Lani studied Cordelia’s face for a moment, then said nonchalantly.
“Yes. He got into a fight with commoners at a bar and died.”
“It was an electoral death, so I wasn’t surprised.”
Cordelia’s lips were almost mocking.
The first person to tell her the news was Leonard. One day, he led Cordelia to a quiet place and told her the news of Pablo’s death. When
Cordelia remained silent for a while, he took her hand as if he was worried.
“He got caught up in a fight and his wounds got worse so quickly that even the senator couldn’t do anything.”
“You assigned a senator to him?”
“I assigned someone to him.”
She didn’t ask why. More precisely, it didn’t really matter whether he assigned someone to Pablo or not.
“I see.”
“Are you okay?”
“Now there’s a good reason not to invite Elector Vasquez to the wedding.”
Leonard’s mouth twitched slightly at her sarcastic answer. When he saw her face, he felt sorry. No matter what, he was his father, so he wondered if he should have pretended to be sad, but Leonard squeezed her hand tightly and said,
“Thank goodness.”
“What?”
“Because you weren’t sad because of that person. I was worried that you might suggest postponing the wedding.”
“That’s what you were worried about?”
“Then what would I be worried about?”
He asked back, as if he was rather puzzled. Cordelia smiled brightly in relief.
Now that the wedding was just around the corner, she briefly recalled her last moments with Pablo, but none of them were clear. She could only vaguely remember that he had visited the Atilei townhouse every day and then suddenly disappeared.
“Don’t worry too much. He just died the most fitting death for him.”
“Thank you for comforting him.”
It would be a lie to say that she had no resentment toward her father at all, but now the past about him felt like a very faint wound. Dennis, whom she had believed to be her younger brother, had long since completely lost contact.
The word Vasquez could no longer leave any scars on Cordelia.
“Still, we held a funeral. There were no mourners.”
The reason there were no mourners was because no one had called, but Cordelia did not bother to explain it. It
was probably the loneliest and most unremarkable funeral Cordelia had ever experienced. There were no flowers to commemorate the deceased, no priests to chant condolences. They simply called a gravedigger and erected a cheap headstone. It
was incredibly shabby for a grave of one of the sacred eight families, Vasquez, and that was exactly what Cordelia had wanted.
Ironically, when the coffin was covered in dirt and almost invisible, a tear ran down Cordelia’s cheek. Leonard, who had been by her side, silently took her hand.
“Are you okay?”
‘He’s dead. Really.’
It wasn’t tears of sorrow or grief. It was more like relief and relief.
The fact that Pablo Vasquez could no longer have any influence on her life was a great liberation for Cordelia.
“Actually.”
She was about to confess her feelings to Lani when the bride’s room burst open without warning.
Of course, Cordelia wasn’t surprised, since there was only one person in this castle who could do something like that.
“Did you take your medicine?”
“Is that the first thing you say to a bride about to get married?”
Cordelia said, wrinkling her nose. Leonard ignored her and strode toward her. His
smooth, platinum-blond hair was perfectly smooth, with camellia oil. Leonard’s appearance in his white robe was so perfect that Cordelia was momentarily lost in thought and stared at him. She could have believed he was an angel from heaven.
The angel tapped her forehead.
“Did you eat?”
“There are still two days left.”
“The wedding is in three days, so you might forget during that time. Eat now. In front of me.”
He said firmly. Cordelia felt very good about Leonard’s unusual concern, so she swallowed the antidote without saying anything. Lani, who was next to her, asked excitedly.
“What medicine are you talking about? Is something wrong with you?”
“The poison that Elector Count Embly fed me. I still have to take the antidote once every ten days.”
“Oh.”
Lani’s face darkened all at once. Cordelia, however, seemed unfazed. Leonard crossed his arms and stared at Lani.
“High Priest. I think he’s calling you from below.”
“Ah.”
There was no one in this castle who could order Lani to come. It was clearly a blatant order to ward off guests. Lani, who noticed this, got up from her seat in a hurry.
“I guess I’ve taken up too much of your time. I’ll see you later, my lady.”
“Lady, how long are you going to call me that? It would be right to address me as Lady Attila from now on.”
“I’m sorry. I still don’t know how to address you properly. Please forgive me, Lady Attila.”
Lani immediately changed her attitude and bowed politely.
“I don’t care. No. Okay, just step aside.”
Leonard was glaring at her from the side, so Cordelia had no choice but to bow to Lani.
When they were alone in the room, Cordelia sighed and said,
“Lani is now a high priestess. And she was also my nanny. Can’t you speak comfortably in private?”
“You can do that when you get used to your position.”
Leonard crossed his legs and leaned back. Cordelia held back her words. They had already argued once over a similar matter.
She wanted to speak comfortably to those she knew, such as Belluce, who had become the Marquis of Ingrion, in private, like before, but Leonard glared at her and opposed her.
“Are all the guests outside?”
“Yeah. Everyone who was supposed to come has come.”
“But can I stay here?”
“It’s my wedding, so it’s my heart.”
“Aha.”
Cordelia blinked innocently. In fact, this was her first time having a proper wedding, and she had no relatives, so she had never attended such a grand wedding
before. So she didn’t know that the groom and bride should come out and greet the guests before the ceremony.
Leonard naturally put a hand on Cordelia’s shoulder and pulled her toward him.
“How do you feel?”
“Right now? I feel good.”
Cordelia also leaned her head against his chest as usual. Leonard glared at her and grumbled.
“… … What? That’s all? I should be nervous, excited, or at least tense.”
“The wedding preparations took too long for that. To be honest, it was a bit boring.” She was nervous
for the first month. She hung the dress she had prepared on one side of the room and fiddled with its sleeves every night.
But the wedding that was supposed to be held in the fall gradually became more and more grand, and as the preparations increased, the wedding was eventually postponed from the fall to the winter and then to the spring of the following year. In other words, Cordelia had been staying with Leonard in the main castle of Attila for over half a year.
The servants of the castle already called her madam, and Cordelia was halfway through the work of the hostess. They had even submitted their marriage vows to the temple, so the two were legally married.
At this point, rather than trembling, she felt more like she wanted to finish her long-pending homework.
“Boring, boring! Where is the bride who talks like that about her own wedding? Did you do it once?”
“No, I told you I couldn’t even dream of a wedding like this before. Why do you keep bringing that up? Do you care that I got married once?”
“Oh. I’m worried.”
