“뭐 하냐?”

“팔찌가 안 빠져요.”

코델리아가 끙끙거리며 팔찌를 빼려고 노력했지만 기분 탓인지 팔찌가 점점 작아지는 것처럼 느껴졌다. 그걸 본 칸디아스가 박장대소를 했다.

“캬캬캬. 잘했다. 잘했어!”

“뭘 잘해요?”

“그거 한번 껴서 주인이라고 인식하면 죽을 때까지 못 빼. 아틸레이가 그 팔찌 구하려고 일 년을 산이고 바다고 돌아다녔는데 제자 놈은 그 귀한 걸 보자마자 바로 낚아채다니. 크하하하! 역시 그 스승에 그 제자다.”

“헉!”

나 이제 죽었다.

코델리아의 얼굴이 빠르게 탈색되었다. 그녀는 울상이 되어서 팔찌를 낀 손목을 칸디아스에게 흔들었다.

“정말 뺄 방법 없어요? 이거 스승님이 알면 나 가만 안 둘 텐데.”

“뭔 상관이야? 네 입으로 스승 죽었다며. 죽은 놈을 뭐 하러 신경 써?”

“아, 그게. 그러니까. 죽었지만 주, 죽은 건 맞는데……”

그녀는 몹시 당황하여 횡설수설했다. 칸디아스는 코델리아의 반응에 콧방귀를 뀌었다.

“어쨌든 난 모르니까 네 스승한테 꼭 보여 주면서 어떻게 푸는지 물어봐라.”

“하아…….”

“근데 너 말이야. 아까부터 묘하게 거슬렸는데.”

코델리아가 한숨을 푹 내쉬며 팔찌를 어떻게 처리해야 할지 고민하는데 칸디아스가 그녀 곁으로 바짝 다가왔다.

“저요?”

“너 혹시 악마랑 계약했냐?”

“네에? 아뇨. 그런 거 할 줄 몰라요.”

“그래? 근데 왜 익숙한 냄새가 나지?”

칸디아스는 눈을 갸웃거리며 코델리아의 요모조모를 살폈다. 그러나 아무리 봐도 결론이 나지 않는지 쩝 하고 입맛을 다시더니 화제를 돌렸다.

“이것들 받아라. 란셀의 마지막 꽃이랑 성녀의 눈물이랑 붉은 용의 숨결이다.”

칸디아스가 눈을 몇 번 깜박이자 후드득거리며 코델리아의 치마 위로 물건들이 떨어졌다. 형태는 모두 제각각이었지만 오묘한 빛을 내는 것은 같았다.

코델리아는 그것들을 주머니에 주섬주섬 담았다.

“고맙습니다.”

“고맙긴. 난 네가 그 팔찌 껴서 너어어무 기분이 좋다. 그놈의 일그러지는 얼굴을 코앞에서 못 보는 게 아쉬울 따름이야.”

“…….”

‘아니, 그렇게 귀한 걸 왜 아무 데나 두냐고! 스승님 알면 나 죽었다.’

코델리아는 속으로는 눈물을 주룩주룩 흘리면서 겉으로는 아무렇지 않은 척 굴었다.

“돌아가신 스승님도 이해하실 거예요. 전 이만 가 볼게요. 칸디아스 님.”

“그래, 그래. 네 스승한테 팔찌 꼭 보여 줘야 한다?”

마지막까지 칸디아스가 얄미운 작별 인사를 건넸다. 코델리아는 성물을 챙긴 주머니를 다시 한번 확인한 뒤에야 문을 열고 나갔다. 들어올 때와 달리 나가는 것은 쉬웠다.

“금방 나왔네요.”

“어? 설마 이 앞에서 계속 기다리고 계셨어요?”

“네. 당신은 아직 마협 안의 지리를 잘 모르니까 걱정이 돼서요.”

나오자마자 마주한 로젠블러의 얼굴에 걱정이 서려 있었다.

사람이 이렇게 착할 수가 있다니. 코델리아는 감탄을 금치 못했다. 누구랑 정말 비교가 된다.

“필요한 일은 다 보았나요?”

“네.”

“그럼 이제 마협 안에서 머무를 곳이 필요하겠지요. 일단 급한 대로 레오가 자던 방으로 안내해 줄게요. 오늘은 쉬고…….”

“아뇨. 저 밖으로 나가는 길만 알려 주세요. 남편이 기다리고 있어요.”

“남편이……. 그래요. 데려다줄게요.”

그는 뭔가 할 말이 많아 보였지만 가타부타 말없이 그녀를 밖으로 안내해 주었다.

처음 보았던 별의 전당을 지나 금세 입구에 다다랐다. 코델리아는 진심을 담아 로젠블러에게 인사를 건넸다.

“오늘 정말 감사했습니다. 엘펜바움 님이 아니었다면 안으로 들어가지도 못했을 거예요.”

“천만에요. 그리고 편하게 불러요. 로젠블러라고.”

“아. 그럼 저도 코델리아라고 불러 주세요!”

“그러죠. 코델리아.”

그냥 이름을 불리는 것뿐인데 어쩐지 그녀의 뺨이 붉게 달아올랐다. 이렇게 잘생긴 남자와 이제 헤어져야 한다는 사실이 몹시 슬퍼질 정도였다.

“어디 머물고 있어요?”

“빛나는 뭇별이요.”

“이런. 우연이네.”

“무슨 우연이요?”

“나도 마침 필요한 게 있어서 그쪽으로 가려던 참인데. 함께 걸을까요?”

“너무 좋아요.”

그녀는 싱글벙글 웃으며 두말할 것 없이 그의 제안을 승낙했다.

그와 함께 길을 걸으니 사람들이 로젠블러를 대놓고 힐끔거리며 쳐다보는 게 느껴진다. 코델리아는 백번 이해했다. 그녀 역시 처음 로젠블러를 봤을 때 넋을 잃고 쳐다봤으니까.

“마법 배우는 건 어때요?”

“It’s fun. It’s hard because there’s a lot of homework.”

“Homework?”

“Oh. Yes. I give myself a lot of homework.”

“That’s amazing. It must not be easy to learn magic on your own.”

“It’s nothing compared to the joy of learning.”

She could now form words quite shamelessly. The starry building began to appear in the distance. Cordelia was already feeling regretful.

Rosenblu seemed to notice this as well and cautiously opened her mouth.

“Okay, Cordelia. I’ll see you later. I’ll hear your answer then.”

After barely sending Rosenblur first, Leonard was coaxed and cajoled into the inn. His

anger didn’t subside, as he kept grumbling the whole time he came in. “What do you dare to do to my disciple? Are you being greedy? You’re going to erase all the seals and carve them into your own?”

“I guess that’s just a joke. Forget it.”

“What were you going to say?”

“What?”

“Blay, when that brat asked me to be his disciple, what were you planning on saying?”

“Of course.”

The word “yes” was on the tip of his tongue, but he suppressed it. He knew that if he said that, he would have to face his grumpy master for at least a month.

“I was going to refuse. How dare you, when you have such a heavenly master!”

“Huh. Judging by your face, it seems like you’ve already fallen for it?”
