I Wish My Husband Were Dead - Chapter 65

Husband’s Funeral
2024.01.04.
Cordelia’s face instantly turned bright red. She swung her pillow and chased Leonard out of the room. He grumbled that he had told her not to go and now he was changing his words, and then left the room.
After a while, Leila came in carrying a basin of warm water.
“Are you awake? How are you feeling?”
“When did the Master come to my room?”
Leila awkwardly rolled her eyes and answered Cordelia’s question.
“Um. Well. He was there when I came this morning.”
“If you’re going to visit, you should have come during the day. Why… … Oh, no. I want to take a bath.”
“Are your feet okay?” “Your feet
? Oh, now that you mention it, they don’t hurt?”
She lifted the blanket to check and saw that the swelling had definitely decreased compared to yesterday. The heat that had been warming her head and internal organs had completely disappeared. Leila put her hand on her forehead and looked pleased.
“No fever. Thank goodness.”
“Yes. Maybe the Master… … .”
She stopped talking and remembered what she thought was a dream last night. From the time she cried and clung to him, telling him not to go, to the time she forced herself to sleep while holding him.
The most embarrassing thing of all was the fact that she had barely been able to wash for the past few days because she was sick.
“Huh? Your face is red. Is your fever coming back?”
“No, just a little. More importantly, give me some bath water.”
“Yes. I’ll get ready. Just wait a moment.”

The routine had returned.
Cordelia felt as if she had gained the world just for that. They ate together as if nothing had happened and occasionally had magic lessons.
Her legs had gotten better, so she could now move around on her own without help.
Leonard was still busy, going out somewhere in the morning and coming back late in the evening, but he had a meal with Cordelia at least once a day.
“Master. You said you would go down to Wilarth when you were done here, right?”
“Yes. Why?”
“Can I visit Abrams before that? Craig.”
The servant was far enough away, but Cordelia lowered her voice just in case.
“I can’t just leave him frozen. I think I need to give him a proper funeral.”
“Oh. By the way, you had a husband ,
didn’t you?” “That’s too much. But you owed me three months.”
“Huh? What? What are you going to do?”
Leonard waved his hand and pushed the servants standing around out of the dining room. Only then could Cordelia continue speaking in her normal voice.
“That’s the biggest problem. If a husband dies while traveling, the wife is the first person to be suspected,
right?” “I guess.”
“So I was thinking about it, and how about dropping him in broad daylight in a crowded place, like from the castle walls? Or maybe he gets hit by a carriage. I think it would be better if there were as many witnesses as possible.”
“You still say scary things so casually.”
Leonard smirked and took a bite of scrambled eggs.
“Hey, this is cute compared to the sins Craig committed against me when he was alive.”
“The sin against you? What happened?”
“Didn’t I tell you? That man brought his mistresses into the bedroom on our first night together. When I refused, he sneered at me, calling me a piece of wood, and then kicked me out of the room. I was treated like a piece of wood on our first night, and I was abused so much.”
Now, she can laugh about it, but back then, Cordelia spent every night crying.
Her husband ignored her like a ghost, Helena treated her like a money-sucking parasite, and her father-in-law, who was Count Abrams at the time, kept nagging her to have a baby.
“Maybe if he hadn’t died, I would have put poisonous mushrooms in Craig’s food?”
Cordelia said with a nonchalant smile.
Leonard muttered gloomily at her explanation.
“… … “I guess I’ll have to crush his head with a cartwheel.”
“Ah, no. It’ll be hard to identify him if his face’s messed up. Hmm. Then let’s say he got hit by a cart hard. Well, falling off the wall looks like suicide. That’ll make it a clean slate of accidents.”
“That sounds better. They won’t suspect anything if there are a lot of witnesses.”
“Yes. So what I’m saying is, teach me puppetry?”
“Puppetry?”
Leonard put down his spoon and furrowed an eyebrow.
“Yes. The Baron said I need to know it to control Craig’s body.”
“When are you learning that? It takes at least a year of puppetry practice to move his joints smoothly.”
“A year?”
I thought it was just a simple matter of moving objects, but it was more complicated and difficult magic than I thought. Cordelia was a little flustered when her plan went awry.
“Well, then what? Should I jump into the carriage with Craig? I can just put up a shield spell… …”
“Don’t talk nonsense. If Baron doesn’t know how to use puppets, I’ll take him with me.”
“Ah! That’ll work.”
Fortunately, the solution was close by. Cordelia’s face relaxed.
“Let’s decide for now that the cause of death is being hit by a carriage… . I should also send a letter to Abrams in advance. It might look strange if I just suddenly announce his death.”
The two put their heads together and planned how to kill Cordelia’s husband successfully.
“While I’m sending the letter, I should also make a record of his whereabouts before he came to Yebo Delrim.”
“His whereabouts?”
“If he suddenly shows up at Yebo Delrim and gets hit by a carriage, it might look strange. Before that, it would be natural if you made a record of a man with a similar build pretending to be Count Abrams and staying in another village.”
“Oh. Master, you’ve killed some people, I see.”
Cordelia let out a pure exclamation. I hadn’t even thought about that, but thanks to
that, there seems to be no reason to be suspicious. She went even further and decided to go look for the place where Craig would die.
“Master. Are you free today?”
“Why? You want to go together?”
“Yes. I don’t know the geography of the capital very well. Oh, if you’re busy, I’ll just take Baron or Beluche with me.”
He was very busy. Leonard was so busy that he felt like he needed three bodies right now. He
had to check Embly’s movements, gather evidence, convince other members of the council who were not happy about the trial, and even think about his work as the head of Attila that had piled up, and every second was precious.
“Not really. I don’t have much on my schedule today anyway.”
“Oh, really? That’s great. “I feel safe when I go with the Master.”
She smiled brightly. Leonard stared at Cordelia’s face for a moment, then turned his head and stood up.
“I’ll go first. Let me know when you’re ready.”
“Yes!”
After he left the dining room, Cordelia asked the servant for a piece of paper and a pen. She wrote something on the note and handed it back to the servant.
“Would you deliver this to Elfenbaum’s townhouse right away?”
“Yes. Who should I send it to?”
“Give it to Lydia Elfenbaum. As soon as possible.”
* * *
“Give me your hand.”
“Oh, it’s okay. I can walk on my own now.”
“Don’t whine and fall over while walking. Give me
your hand.” He forcibly took her hand and placed it on his arm.
The place they arrived was a fairly busy street. It was big enough for two carriages to pass by at the same time, and there were many people passing by. Cordelia looked carefully at the street.
“You can ask Belluce to drive the carriage. Where should I run from? It would be weird if I suddenly jumped out, right?”
“Who would care? Everyone is busy with their own way.”
“Should we go this way? Or here?”
“Just anywhere. What’s the difference?”
“Ah, let’s find the best natural location. Isn’t there a place where there are a lot of deaths here?”
Cordelia grabbed her grumbling teacher and dragged him around. Her eyes were quickly scanning the road.
In fact, what Cordelia was looking for wasn’t the best place for Craig to officially die.
“Oh, is that Lydia?”
“What?”
“Really. It’s Lydia.”
It sounded awkward to me, but it wasn’t enough to realize that this chance meeting wasn’t a coincidence. Cordelia walked toward Lydia, happier than usual.
Lydia recognized Cordelia and greeted her first.
“Cordelia. I see you here. What a coincidence.”
“Yes. What a coincidence.”
Fortunately, Lydia was better at acting than Cordelia. She spoke to Leo naturally.
“Leo is here too. What’s going on here?”
“I was touring the temple with the Master. Wow, it’s fate that we met like this. Should we sit somewhere quiet and talk?”
“It’s so nice.”
Cordelia and Lydia’s conversation was smooth as if they had made a promise. There was no room for Leonard’s opinion either.
“Wait, what are you two?”
“Yes, why, why? What is it?”
Cordelia was stung, opened her eyes as wide as she could and looked at Leonard.
“When did you become so close? How many times have you seen me?”
“When I was home because of my injured foot, I exchanged letters with Lydia. We also went to a dessert shop together, ahem.”
Cordelia, remembering what happened on the day she went to that dessert shop, cleared her throat and stopped talking.
“So it was Lydia who had been sending me letters every other day recently.”
“That’s right. And ahem. Lydia and I are friends. Friends.”
Cordelia’s eyes sparkled especially when she said the word friend.
“I don’t know because the Master doesn’t have any friends, but when friends meet on the street, they usually sit in a cafe or something and chat.”
“Oh, really? Then you two, as friends, do whatever you want. I’m busy.”
When Leonard made it seem like he was going to leave, Cordelia hung onto his arm with longing eyes.
