Husband’s Funeral
2024.01.10.
The police chief treated Cordelia with such kindness that it was almost burdensome. He even called the police carriage without her requesting and carried Craig’s casket behind it.
Cordelia was a little bewildered, but then realized that he knew that she was Leonard’s disciple and was treating her so kindly.
Every time she experienced such moments, she realized how great Leonard’s name was.
“Oh, don’t worry. I’ll definitely take care of that coachman.”
“I have a favor to ask of you.”
“Just tell me anything.”
“Can I get the coachman’s personal guard who killed my husband?”
“Ah.”
The police chief hesitated for a moment, so I thought he was refusing and became nervous, but instead he lowered his voice and made a secret suggestion.
“Of course, Mrs. Abrams. Where should I send him?”
“Send him to Attila.”
“Yes. I will.”
“Don’t touch him. “ I want to do it myself.”
“Of course. I will do whatever you want.”
He said with a meaningful smile. The constable offered to escort her home, but Cordelia politely declined.
As she was about to board the carriage the constable had prepared, someone suddenly appeared and grabbed Cordelia’s arm.
“Who, are you still here?”
“You didn’t give me an answer!”
Dennis looked around anxiously.
“I promise. I will tell Elector Attila about me.”
“Why should I do that?”
“What?”
“Maximilian murdered my master, or rather, tried to. How can I ask you to forgive him when you missed the murderer during the transport?”
“Why can’t you? Why are you so selfish, sister? Can’t you even bow your head once for your brother, for your family?”
This sentence was familiar, having heard it many times. At the time, she had just bit her lips and been dragged along without being able to properly refute him, but now it was different.
Cordelia looked straight into Dennis’s eyes and said,
“Yeah. I can’t. I’m selfish.”
To be honest, she was angry.
It wasn’t the real situation, but seeing Cordelia’s husband die right before her eyes and still talking about her circumstances made her feel arrogant.
Dennis glared at Cordelia and tightened his grip on her wrist.
“Are you ignoring me now because you’re just a wizard or something?”
“Ugh.”
“If you become that great wizard, you’ll abandon your family and everything else, right?”
“Let go of my hand.”
Dennis was definitely his father’s son. How could they say the same thing? It was almost laughable.
Cordelia shook Dennis’s hand hard. Fortunately, he let go of her wrist.
Dennis glared at Cordelia with eyes of hatred and contempt.
“I’m an idiot who trusted you and ran all the way here. Why don’t you abandon your family and live well? Well, you’re not a proper person either, since you’re under Attila, who broke your father’s ankle. “Just give me a few pennies and… … .”
“What?”
“Why? Am I wrong?”
“What on earth do you mean? My father broke his ankle… … . Did the Master go to see him?”
“Lady Cordelia.”
Baron, who had been quietly behind him until then, spoke for the first time.
“Please get on the carriage. There are people watching around.”
“Ah.”
Cordelia looked around briefly. Since she was still not far from the police headquarters, there were quite a few people coming and going as Baron had said.
“Where are you staying now?”
“Why do you ask?”
“I’ll go there. Tell me quickly.”
At Cordelia’s urging, Dennis quickly changed his words and actions, forgetting how he had been rambling until now.
“Lars’ Horseshoe. Stay on this floor there, Sister. I’ll be waiting for you, so you have to come, okay?”
“I understand, so wait.”
With that, Cordelia got on the carriage. It had only been a few hours since she had left Attila, but she felt as tired as if she had been for several days.
The last words Dennis said lingered in his mind.
“Baron.”
“Yes.”
“Do you know what Dennis meant?”
“… … I’m sorry.”
Baron’s apology was not a response to his ignorance of what Dennis meant, but rather a euphemism for “I can’t say.” Cordelia didn’t ask any further.
What on earth was going on?
The carriage slowed down slowly. It seemed that they had arrived in Attila. It was time to resume the play.
The moment Cordelia got out of the carriage, she forgot about Dennis and pretended to be heartbroken over the loss of her husband.
“Oh my, my! Lady Cordelia!”
Her white dress was soaked in blood. The servants of the mansion came running, panicked at the sight.
“What the hell is going on? Where are you hurt? What are you doing? Call the senator right now!”
“Alex. I, I. I’m okay. I’m not hurt. Sob.”
Cordelia held back tears again. Her eyes were sore from crying so much, but she couldn’t help it because it was absolutely necessary.
As she choked up and couldn’t continue her story, Baron continued with a gloomy face.
“Count Abrams, Lady Cordelia’s husband, just passed away in an unexpected accident.”
“Oh my.”
“Oh, my God. Lady Cordelia.”
“What do you mean, Baron? An accident?”
“He didn’t see the carriage coming and died walking.”
“You were with Lady Cordelia?”
Baron nodded gravely. Alex choked. At this point, Cordelia was swaying violently.
“Oh, Craig. Craig… .”
“Lady Cordelia must have been very shocked because she witnessed the accident herself. Let’s take her upstairs quickly.”
“Yes. I understand.”
Cordelia was carried up to her room by her maids. Leila burst into tears as she took off Cordelia’s bloody dress.
“Oh, you went out this morning with such high hopes, and yet… .”
“Leila.”
“I’m sorry. Lady Cordelia must be having a much harder time.”
“I’m sorry, but I want to be alone.”
“Yes. I understand. Please rest.”
Leila finished dressing Cordelia and quietly left the room.
Cordelia didn’t relax. From now on, it was important.
Even though it was inside the Atile Townhouse, she had to keep her duties as a ‘lady whose husband died suddenly in an accident’ so that she wouldn’t be suspected.
She closed the window and drew the curtains before she could catch her breath. Her whole body ached because she had been tense since morning.
Cordelia went into bed. And she fell into a quiet sleep like a grave.
* * *
It was a familiar hand.
For some reason, Cordelia felt warm and intimate with that hand.
That’s why it was harder for her to open her eyes than usual.
She felt affectionate in the hands that were arranging each strand of her hair.
Cordelia opened her eyes very slowly. As expected, her master was sitting in a chair by the bedside.
Leo took his hand off her face and asked,
“How do you feel about being an official widow?”
“It feels so good.”
Cordelia smiled bashfully. Leonard returned her smile with a faint smile.
“I heard from Baron that your acting is really excellent.”
“No one can compare to Baron. I thought Baron had lost a child because he cried so much.”
“Did you say that to Baron?”
“Yes? No. I was just thinking… .”
“Don’t. I really lost someone.”
“Oh, oh. Yes.”
Cordelia was so flustered that only half-finished syllables came out of her mouth. Of course, Baron could have been married since he was old, but she didn’t know he had such a past. It was a good thing she didn’t bring that up in front of Baron.
“But what’s going on in my room, Master?”
“Alex kept giving me hints.”
“Alex? Why?”
“He asked me to comfort poor Cordelia who lost her husband.”
“Aha.”
Even without looking, she could guess how anxious Alex and the other attendants were beyond the door.
“When I checked Craig’s body, I found that poor Cordelia had beaten her husband to death.”
“What else are you going to crush? You just got hit by a carriage.”
Cordelia said sheepishly. Even I could see that you were badly mauled by the horse’s hooves. Baron had adjusted it well, so that only your head was not injured, but your body was almost completely crushed.
“I’ve already frozen your body. When did you say you were leaving for Abrams?”
“If we get everything ready, we’ll leave in five days.”
“I see. If you tell Alex what you need, he’ll take care of it.” She
had to go to Abrams and finish the funeral before she could put an end to her long and terrible marriage.
“And… … .”
He trailed off a bit, not answering.
“I heard you met your younger brother today.”
“Did you hear from the Baron? Dennis lost Maximilian while transporting him. Is that right?”
“To be precise, it was Embly’s doing. Your brother was just used.”
“You used Vasquez as a scapegoat.”
“That’s right.”
Cordelia thought for a moment. It wasn’t surprising that Vasquez, who had fallen and was powerless, was used as a scapegoat to get Maximilian out.
However, what she didn’t understand was why Vasquez of all people was brought in.
“But why Vasquez? If you’re going to do something like that, wouldn’t it have been better to bribe a suitable knight and handle it quietly? Was it really necessary to force Dennis into the Knights and use him?”
“I don’t know.”
Leonard knew the reason, but he didn’t say it.
