Husband’s Funeral
2024.01.14.
The words, “Will the Master want me again?” almost came out of my throat, but I barely swallowed them.
“I have to take care of Craig’s funeral here and finish up some things. So, Beluche, you go back first.”
“What about you? When are you coming to Yebo Delrim?”
“I don’t know.”
Cordelia just mumbled. She wasn’t sure what would happen either.
Beluche pursed her lips, then closed them. Then she turned around and headed toward Abrams Castle.
“If you’re going back anyway, I can go when you do. I can’t let my guard down because I don’t know when you’ll die.”
“… … Do whatever you want.”
Cordelia didn’t force Beluche. It was obvious that if something happened, she would leave on her own.
As Beluche had said, they arrived at Abrams Castle around noon.
The gatekeeper was surprised once when he saw the carriage with Atile’s emblem, and twice when Cordelia got out of it.
“Madam!”
“Call all the people of the castle and come. The acting Earl of Lancaster.”
“Yes!”
Not long after he left, everyone from the servants of the castle to the butler and the Baron of Lancaster gathered.
Since they had already sent the obituary, they were not surprised to see Cordelia in mourning clothes.
“Sob, sob, madam… .”
Emily was the first to burst into tears. Cordelia calmly ordered Craig’s coffin to be lowered from the back of the carriage and then opened the lid.
Baron Lancaster approached the coffin, checked Craig’s face, and then let out a sigh of relief.
“The Count is leaving so vainly. He had endured those five difficult months.”
“The accident… happened so suddenly that Craig probably didn’t feel much pain when he left.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Countess. I should have greeted you first.”
“No. After the funeral, I will become Vasquez anyway.”
Baron Lancaster also seemed to have guessed that part, as he did not show any particular surprise.
The two entered the castle.
Cordelia looked around as she walked through the corridors. It had only been two months since she returned, but the scenery felt unfamiliar, as if it had been years since she had been here.
“I have made some preparations for the funeral since I received the news of the death.”
“Thank you, Baron Lancaster. It was originally my job to do.”
“It is something I would have helped with if I had been here.”
As they walked, they arrived at the count’s office. Baron Lancaster yielded the place of honor to Cordelia and cautiously opened his mouth.
“I apologize for asking you this before the funeral has even been held, but there are already more than a few people heading here after hearing the news of the count’s death.”
“Of course. This is a chance to swallow up the count’s family.”
“Shall I tell you who is coming? If the Countess gives one of them her power, she might pay more attention when she returns to Vasquez.”
It was a euphemism, but it also revealed her blatant desire. Cordelia smiled faintly.
“From what I can tell from the way you say it, I guess Baron Lancaster has someone in mind.”
“There is someone who I think would be a good successor to the late Count Abrams.”
“Good. It would be right for the person who will remain here to decide.”
After all, Cordelia didn’t care who would become the next count. So she didn’t bother asking who the baron had in mind.
“Is there anything else I need to know? I’m a little tired.”
“Nothing. I’ve kept someone who came from far away too long. The funeral will be held tomorrow, so get some rest today.”
“Thank you.”
Cordelia felt that he was saying what she should have said, but she didn’t refuse.
Baron Lancaster escorted her to the door. He opened the door and then suddenly remembered something and asked her,
“By the way, you came in Attila’s carriage. May I ask what happened?”
“Atila… …”
It didn’t seem like he was asking knowingly. After all, Abrams was in the countryside, so it was understandable that Cordelia would not know that Attila was his disciple.
She took a long time to decide what to say. What should I say to define my relationship with Attila?
Should I reveal that I was the Master’s disciple? The letter hadn’t come back yet.
She hesitated for a moment and then decided to muddle through.
“Elector Attila was kind enough to help me with the recovery after my husband’s accident. The carriage was also an extension of that kindness.”
“Is that so? I heard that Elector Attila had returned alive, but it’s strange that we’ve met like this. Oh, by the way, have you seen his disciple?”
“Your disciple?”
“Yes. I heard that Elector Count Attila has a disciple. I don’t know much about magic, but my nephew is a wizard, and because of him, the Magic Alliance has been turned upside down, so I sent him several letters excitedly.”
“… … Well, that’s about it.”
Cordelia left the place quickly with an awkward greeting.

The servants of Attila Townhouse felt precariously tense these days, as if they were walking on thin ice. The day
before yesterday, the footman had been assigned to clean the stables for a month because he opened the door of the carriage the master was riding in late, and yesterday, the maid who was making the bedding was kicked out to the kitchen because she left hair on the quilt.
“When will Lady Cordelia be back?”
“She’ll be back after the funeral in Abrams, so it won’t take a month at the most?”
“Oh my, Lady Alex. I can’t even breathe properly. She never did that when Lady Cordelia was here, sigh.”
The maid who had been complaining quickly closed her mouth and lowered her head. The master of the mansion returned.
Leonard passed the frozen servants and went up to this floor. Baron followed him a little later. Alex quickly walked to Baron and told him the good news.
“Baron. Cordelia has a letter.”
“A letter? To me?”
“Yes. It definitely has Baron’s name written on the recipient.”
Baron opened the seal and read the letter on the spot.
There was nothing special about the contents. It simply said that he was on his way to Abrams and that Beluche was with him, so he shouldn’t worry. What
was a little unusual was the part where he repeatedly asked how Leonard was feeling and whether he was really angry. At the end, there was a cute postscript that said that he was also sending Leonard a message and asked him to definitely respond.
In fact, Beluche contacted him through the messenger this morning. He said that it had already arrived at Abrams. It seems that Cordelia’s letter was a little late because it was delivered by a person.
“What did you say? When will you be back? It seems like peace will come to this mansion only when Lady Cordelia comes. The master’s mood is so sensitive these days, so it seems like we’re walking on a thorny path.”
“… … Yes. Lady Cordelia should come back to the mansion soon.”
A shocking thought suddenly crossed Baron’s mind at Alex’s complaint. He put the letter in his bosom and quickly went up to the floor where his master was.
“What are you doing to linger like this? And why is there so much dust in the office? They all seem to be slacking off.”
“Where on earth is the dust?”
“Baron. I think it’s time for you to die too. You can’t even see what’s in front of you.”
“Stop bothering your servants. It’s not like that will bring Lady Cordelia back sooner.”
“Didn’t I tell you not to say that name?”
Leonard glared at Baron, his teeth clenched. However, Baron, who had been looking after or raising Leonard since he was five, was not afraid of those scary eyes at all.
“If you’re going to be so restless, send a letter to Cordelia.”
“Who was restless? Don’t even mention that ungrateful woman! You dare not respect and serve your master, but you dare to swear at him just because your pride was hurt?”
“Then, should I just throw away the pigeon that came to Beluche?”
Instead of the letter to Cordelia, Baron took out the note from Beluche. Leonard glared at it and snatched the note away without saying anything. Baron laughed inwardly at her duplicity.
[Abrams arrived. When asked when he would return, he avoided answering. Wait until he returned to Attila.]
He had earnestly asked me to find out when he would return, but the most important date was missing. He checked the back just in case, but it was empty. He immediately exploded with anger.
“Beluche, did you stop learning letters? Why is this report like this? If you don’t answer, I’ll have to ask you for the date, even if it means
asking you.” “I’ll figure it out. Didn’t you say you’d stay by my side until I got to Attila ?”
“And Cordelia, why didn’t you tell me when she’d come? What does she have to do there? No one would care about the countess whose husband died, so why are you lingering?”
He was excessively irritated and angry. It seemed that he didn’t like Beluce’s report very much. Nevertheless, he carefully put the note in his pocket.
“Huh, really, would Cordelia just run away like that?”
“What? Run away?”
Cordelia’s letter didn’t show any such signs, but the Baron pretended not to notice and scratched him gently. As expected, Leonard jumped as if struck by lightning at the word run away.
“I know that’s not true, but I don’t know how people work.”
“Why would she run away? Why? After all the good I’ve done for her!”
“Of course you did well. But it’s only natural that Lady Cordelia would be angry.”
Baron quickly started telling the story he had prepared.
“When I first met Lady Cordelia at Abrams, she got angry just once. Do you remember?”
“… … .”
Even without searching, the scene came to mind. When I asked how much money she needed, her expression hardened and she left the room.
