I Wish My Husband Were Dead - Chapter 87

What do you think of me?
2024.01.26.
“Is this the right place?”
Cordelia muttered in an unsure tone as she stood in the hallway. She grabbed the wizards passing by and asked them questions until she reached Kanon’s lab. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
Knock-knock-
knock more than ten times, but there was no sign of life inside. It seemed like there was no one in the lab.
‘What should I do? Should I go back?’
While she was standing in front of the door, pondering, someone tapped her on the back.
“Huh?”
“Who are you?”
“Oh, I’m Cordelia Vasquez. I’m here to run a letter, that is, a letter for Matilda.”
She stuttered a little in embarrassment. Fortunately, the other person didn’t seem to care much. The tall man with brown hair answered with a tired face.
“He’s not in right now. He has other things to do.”
“He’s not in the magic room?”
“No. That’s not it. Is it urgent, haa, because of the exam?”
“Urgent… … It’s not work. Then where are you now?”
“You’re probably in the third floor Zenubit Hall.”
“Thank you!”
Cordelia thanked the man who yawned lazily and headed to the third floor.
It was her first time walking alone inside the magic hall, so Cordelia felt new and excited about every moment. She felt as if she were a real wizard, and her heart raced.
It wasn’t hard to find Zenubit Hall that the man had told her about. There were a lot of people gathered in one place, noisily.
“Okay, okay. Go in and sit down quickly. No more chatting.”
“Over there… … .”
Cordelia approached the man who was guiding people into the hall and asked. With his sharp jaw and large body, he looked more like a bandit than a wizard.
“Is Kanon in there?”
“Why is that?”
“That’s Matilda… … .”
“Why don’t you hurry up and come? Noah! If you do something stupid one more time and get caught, you’ll be kicked out immediately. Do you understand?”
“Damn it. When did I do something stupid?”
“I haven’t come to my senses yet. Hurry up and sit down!”
The man was so busy that he couldn’t exchange more than a sentence with Cordelia. People kept entering the Zenubit Hall behind her.
“Excuse me. Is Kanon inside?”
“Uh. Since he is inside, you should hurry up and sit down.”
“Huh? Why?”
“Aren’t you a low-level wizard?”
“Yes.”
But why does that matter? Do you need ranks for errands?
“Then don’t bother talking and go and sit down.”
“Sit down? I’m just here to run an errand. This letter for Kanon… .”
“Yes, yes. You’re here to run an errand. And to Kanon, the examiner? Stop making ridiculous excuses and go and sit down.” He
pushed Cordelia’s back as if he was annoyed.
“It’s true.”
“Even if what you say is true, I can’t meet Kanon until I finish the exam.”
There were many things I wanted to ask him, but he looked so busy that I couldn’t bring myself to say anything more.
On top of that, people kept crowding behind me, so I couldn’t just stand there at the entrance. Cordelia looked around and went inside.
Desks were densely placed in the hall, and people were sitting at the desks, looking through something. Cordelia found an empty seat and sat down.
Soon after, the man who had been guiding people at the entrance came to the front and said,
“As you all know, I am Rhiannon’s Lucces. Anyone caught cheating today will have their hair shaved and will have to clean the bathroom for a year. Do you understand?”
“Yes.”
Judging from the atmosphere, this was probably a place for some kind of test. Her guess was right, as she immediately handed out pens and test papers. She
was clearly on an errand to deliver a letter to Kanon, but she got caught up in the atmosphere and ended up taking the test. Then, she suddenly wondered how good she was.
‘The teacher teased me for being stupid, but I guess I’ll be average?’
She looked around and saw that everyone was around her age, or maybe a little older.
Although she had only been studying for half a year, she had heard from Rosenblu that she was smart several times, and she had not been slacking off in her magic studies, so she should be at a certain level.
“I’ll give you five minutes,”
Lucchese said.
“Five minutes?”
Suddenly, her mind became anxious. Cordelia quickly looked over the test. There were twenty questions in total, most of which were subjective, with the last two being descriptive.
“No, you want me to solve this in five minutes?”
Her slightly proud heart quickly became humble. She glanced around and saw that everyone had relaxed expressions.
‘You’re all amazing. You’re telling me you’re going to solve all this in five minutes?’
Cordelia suddenly felt a surge of pride. So she concentrated as much as she could and grabbed her pen to start solving the problems. She
had long since forgotten about her original purpose of running errands.
Fortunately, she was able to solve the first ten problems without much trouble. Of the remaining eight subjective problems, three had some tricky parts, but she managed to rack her brain and write down the answers.
Now, there were only two descriptive problems left.
She used superhuman strength to move her hands quickly. The problems themselves weren’t difficult, but the equations were complicated, so if she made one mistake, she’d have to start over from the beginning.
“Whew.”
Fortunately, she barely managed to solve all the problems in five minutes. After writing down the last equation, the tension in her body completely released and she dropped the pen she was holding.
Cordelia raised her hand nervously.
“Hey.”
“What are you? Why? Is there a problem?”
“I solved it all.”
“What?”
Lucchese made a strange expression and strode towards Cordelia. He snatched Cordelia’s test paper from the desk and was startled.
“… … It’s true, right?”
“You said to finish it in five minutes.”
“What do you mean? I meant to check if the test paper was printed properly and write down my personal information. Is this your first time taking the test?”
“… … Oh. I see.”
This time, Cordelia was flustered.
Of course, there were too many test questions to finish in five minutes. Before she knew it, everyone’s eyes were on Cordelia.
Lucchese still couldn’t believe it, looking back and forth between the test paper and Cordelia before asking.
“I’ve never seen anyone finish the test before they even started. But I’ve never seen you before. What school are you from?”
“Acheron?”
“Acheron? Oh my god! You were Atilei’s disciple?”
Lucchese’s voice resonated through the quiet test room. Thanks to that, more attention was focused on her than before. Cordelia lowered her head, feeling extremely burdened by this.
“I wondered how smart you were to be accepted as a disciple by that person, but now I understand. Are you a real genius?”
“Huh? Oh, no. That’s not it… …”
A genius.
It was too much praise for Cordelia, who was used to her teacher teasing her every day about whether her head was made of granite or limestone. Her face turned bright red like a ripe apple.
“Don’t be so humble. Get up. You can go straight to the next exam.”
“Huh? The next exam? I just came to see Kanon.”
“Yeah, yeah. Kanon will be there when you go to the next exam. Take this. You’ll need it to enter the exam.”
Lucius handed her a small chess piece with the number 1 on it.
And so Cordelia ended up heading to the next exam before she knew it. She was still confused as she went to the place Lucius had guided her to.
‘Once I get to the testing center, Kanon-sama will be there, so I can just deliver the letter and leave.’
She arrived at the testing center, clutching the letter tightly. The door was firmly shut. Just in case, she held the chess piece Lucchese had given her near the door, and it clicked open.
“Hello.”
When she opened the door, she saw five men and women sitting at a long desk. Judging from the fact that they were all middle-aged or older, they didn’t seem to be people who had come to take the test. Cordelia rolled her eyes here and there, not knowing which of them was Kanon.
“What are you?”
“My name is Cordelia Vasquez… … .”
“No. How did you get in here?”
“Huh? Lucchese gave me this… … .”
They seemed to be surprised by Cordelia’s appearance. The youngest of the five, a man who seemed to be in his forties at best, was surprised when he saw the chess piece Cordelia had handed him.
“No, how long has it been since the test started and you already received this?”
“Are you number one?”
“Oh, kids these days must be quick-witted. They finished so early.”
“Haha. It’s different from when we were together.”
Everyone was saying things, so I was out of my mind. I got caught up in the atmosphere and ended up having to take another test. Cordelia opened her eyes wide and quickly took out a letter from her pocket.
“I’m here on an errand for Lady Matilda. I’m going to deliver a letter to Lord Kanon.”
“A letter? Give it to me.”
The man sitting in the middle must have been Kanon. He waved his hand. Cordelia quickly handed him the letter.
“Hmm.”
Kanon glanced at the letter without any expression on his face, then quickly turned his gaze to Cordelia.
“But how did you get that chess piece?”
“Luchess gave it to me.”
“You didn’t even take the test?”
“No. I took the test.”
“Then stand in the center. Since you’re already here, you should take the second test.”
“Huh?”
That wasn’t right.
She thought she could just leave if she delivered the letter, but the situation was getting more complicated.
Cordelia didn’t know what to do, so she just wiggled her fingers. Then Kanon suddenly shouted.
“What are you doing! There’s no time. Hurry up and stand in the center.”
“Oh, yes!”
Cordelia fell for his momentum and stood at attention in the center.
“You can just memorize the written test, but the actual test is different. Now, the topic of today’s test is magic circles.”
“Magic circles?”
“Yeah. Let’s see how hard you studied.”
Kanon said with a spiteful smile. On the other hand, Cordelia felt a little relieved when she heard the test topic. Now, she could stack magic circles not only four times, but five times
. Of course, Leonard would click his tongue saying that her progress was still slow, but after studying for about three months, this wouldn’t be so bad.
Maybe?
