Baron came down to Wilarth for the first time in a long while to report on the investigation that Leonard had ordered.
The two met in a quiet park and talked.
“Why did you bring that dog?”
“I didn’t bring it. When I told him I was going to Cordelia, he got on the carriage on his own.”
Baron looked at Lottie, who was yawning and laughing. Lottie absentmindedly rested her chin on the floor and dozed off in the sunlight.
“Here is the report you mentioned.”
The park was quiet during the day because there weren’t many people. In the first place, only nobles could wander around the park at this time, so it was even more so.
Leonard crossed his legs and looked through the document Baron had investigated. It was thicker than he had thought, so it took a while to read, but soon a look of disappointment crossed his face.
“What is this?”
“The Vasquez servants changed frequently, so the only one who remembered Mrs. Vasquez was the butler.”
“How many people have you replaced? Do you have obsessive-compulsive disorder?”
Over the past twenty years, there have been hundreds of servants who have worked for Vasquez. Their tenures were also very short. It was common for noble families to work for ten years once they entered the household, but this was a very unusual situation.
“It seems that it was not obsessive-compulsive disorder, but rather the lack of wages that was so serious that no one worked there for a long time. More than half of those who left did not receive their proper wages.”
“Ha.”
Leonard sighed and placed the document he was holding on the seat next to him.
He had asked the servants to investigate if anyone knew anything about Cordelia’s birth, but it didn’t seem to yield much.
“Then what about the butler? Do you know anything?”
“Well… … He also came a long time after Cordelia was born, so he couldn’t get much information. If you were curious about the time of her birth, I suggested that you look for the nanny.”
“Nanny? Oh, from Yeratcus?”
He vaguely remembered what Cordelia had said. He remembered that the reason he could speak Bedos, the language of the Southern Continent, was because he had a nanny from Yeratcus.
“You remembered. That’s right. The nanny was close to Lady Vasquez, but due to other circumstances, she left Vasquez when Cordelia was around ten years old.”
“Where?”
“I’m currently searching for her whereabouts, but if she returned to Yeratcus, it’ll take some time.”
“I don’t care how long it takes, so I’ll definitely find her.”
“Excuse me, but may I ask why you suddenly want me to investigate Lady Cordelia’s birth?”
Baron asked politely. Leonard kept his mouth shut. He didn’t want to plant any preconceived notions about Cordelia by using the truth that hadn’t been fully revealed.
“I’m just curious.”
“Yes. I understand.”
As a loyal subject, Baron noticed that he was reluctant to tell her the reason and didn’t ask any more questions.
“And there’s something else I have to tell you. Maximilian and Rosaline Embly went south together, but just before boarding the ship at Angsene, the group split into two. First, we chased Maximilian, but it seems he made contact with the dark wizards. Traces of magical power of unknown origin were found here and there. Not only our pursuers, but all the Embly knights who were with him were killed. The second pursuit team discovered them, so we realized it a little late.”
“Dark wizards? Are you talking about the excommunicated ones?”
“Yes. I don’t know what Maximilian promised them, but they seem to be moving with Maximilian.”
“Anyway, they’re running away like rats.”
Leonard stuck out his tongue. Now, even though he can’t use magic, he’s running faster than anyone else. At this point, I was impressed.
“Are you sure he’s separated from Embly?”
“Yes. Based on what’s been reported so far, it seems like he’s only moving with those wizards. And this isn’t certain yet, but… … .”
Baron trailed off for a moment and then opened his mouth.
“Rosaline Embley seems to have died.”
“Dead? Why?”
“It seems she died while giving birth.”
“Hmm.”
Leonard fiddled with his chin. Things were getting more complicated. Now that his beloved daughter was dead, there was no way to predict how Elector Embley would react. It would have been normal to immediately find Maximilian and try to kill him, but he was worried that Anton, who had lost his mind, might bite Attila and fall.
“Did Maximilian find out and run away?”
“I’m not sure about that.”
“Ha.”
He suddenly felt annoyed.
He could have just killed her in the Delorana territory.
Leonard rarely regretted his actions, but he regretted keeping Maximilian alive. He kept him alive in order to kill his brother who betrayed him as painfully as possible, but now he’s getting on my nerves.
“That’s okay, what happened to Menupio’s decision to join us?”
“I got a call yesterday. He said he was going to head to Angsene first.”
“That’s good. You don’t have to capture him alive, so just kill him if you see him.”
“Would you be okay with that? Weren’t you planning on capturing him alive and sending him to trial?”
“No. I’m not interested in trials or anything. I found something much more interesting.”
The anger that had been burning like a volcano had long since disappeared. These days, what dominated his body and mind was not the hatred that clawed at his heart, but an unfamiliar love.
Baron noticed that Leonard’s eyes were fixed on one spot and looked in that direction as well. Naturally, Cordelia was walking toward him from afar. She waved her hand from afar, as if she had spotted the two of them. Baron raised his hand slightly as if responding.
“When would be a good time for the wedding?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Wouldn’t spring be good? If we start preparing now, I think we can finish preparing for the wedding in the main castle.”
Baron said, slyly. Leonard rested his chin on one hand and watched Cordelia getting closer. Their eyes met. No, he couldn’t take his eyes off her.
“That’s okay. Why would I have to walk down the aisle alone?”
He didn’t deny his feelings. Baron found his master’s weakness both funny and pitiful.
“What’s bothering you? Who would dare refuse if you proposed to me?”
“I’m afraid that you might be included in the ‘who’.”
Leonard realized what he was afraid of only after he had said the words.
After realizing his feelings, he tried to understand Cordelia’s feelings. However, no matter how positively he tried to interpret the situation, it was clear that she had no romantic feelings for him.
At first, he was confident. He had a lot of things, he was smart, he was handsome, and so on, and if I were to list his merits, it would be endless. But I also came to know that all of those were just meaningless letters to Cordelia.
Sometimes it was painful to look at her face. I was experiencing for the first time what it felt like to be unable to reach out. In the meantime, Cordelia was shining brighter and brighter, and it scared me that everyone in the world would see how bright she was.
“Master! Baron!”
“Don’t run. You’ll fall over.”
Leonard got up from his seat and walked in front of Cordelia. Then he naturally straightened the hair that was stuck to her forehead. His touch was very affectionate and gentle.
Baron greeted Cordelia.
“Lady Cordelia. It’s been a while. Did you finish the funeral well?”
“Yes. I finished it well. Now that I think about it, it’s the first time I’ve seen Baron since Craig’s funeral. Huh? Lottie?”
The gray dog walked slowly to Cordelia’s feet. Cordelia knelt down and stroked Lottie’s face… …
“That’s too much. Are you not letting me stroke you today?”
Lottie quickly turned her head and stepped back. Cordelia pouted and got up. Leonard asked,
“I told you to do your homework, so how did you know where I was?”
“Actually, I went to look for Rosenbler because of Lydia. But I couldn’t find him no matter how hard I looked, so I came here to find you at the park.”
“Why Lydia?”
“That’s because I talked to Candias after the teacher left… … .”
“Eww!”
“What, what!”
People screamed from far away. Soon after, a bloody man jumped out from between the bushes.
“Monster, woman, eww!”
He didn’t look sane. He muttered a few unintelligible words and ran out of the park.
Leonard pulled Cordelia close to him. Cordelia was terrified and grabbed the hem of her master’s clothes.
“W-what’s going on?”
“Well.”
Baron also looked around with a serious expression. People came running again with a rustling sound. They shouted at Cordelia and her party who were standing there.
“Run away quickly! Quickly!”
“What’s going on?”
“Some crazy wizard is killing everyone!”
After saying that, the woman hugged the child tightly and ran again in a hurry.
“A crazy wizard?”
“Is he causing a magic outburst?”
“I need to check. You guys wait here.”
“Master, are you going to go?”
Cordelia stopped him as he was about to leave. Baron patted her instead when he saw the worry in her eyes.
“Don’t worry. In this Willas, there is no one who would dare harm you.”
“Still, just in case… … . Let’s go together. What if something happens if I’m alone here?” When
she grabbed Leonard’s clothes and held them out, he laughed instead and held out his hand.
“Who do you take after to be so timid?”
Cordelia quickly grabbed his hand. Leonard and the others walked in the opposite direction of the people running towards them.
However, Cordelia’s breathing became increasingly faster as they walked. The strength in her grip on Leonard’s hand left her and her body staggered.
“Huk.”
“What’s wrong? Does it hurt?”
“Ugh, huk.”
Leonard was surprised and grabbed Cordelia’s arm in return.
