The Story of Bellerophon – (4)
Bellerophon flew quickly on Pegasus to find the Chimera.
The monster’s traces were consistent.
‘Damn… that monster…’
Right towards Rakia, the city where he had been commissioned.
The ground where the Chimera had passed was horribly scarred by the monster’s sharp claws…
The grass and trees along the road withered because of the deadly poison that dripped from the snake’s teeth.
Purruk!
He hurriedly drove Pegasus near Rakia.
But as we gradually got closer to the city, we could hear people screaming and buildings collapsing.
Is it too late even though I’m driving Pegasus at full speed? Which way is it headed?
“Gyaaaah!”
“Monster! Monster! Oh, goddess Athena!”
“Get over here quickly!”
The temple of the goddess Athena, built on the outskirts of the city, was engulfed in flames.
The statue of the beautiful goddess of wisdom was torn in half and fell to the ground.
A scene of chaos was created as people fled and heavily armed soldiers surrounded the temple, running around busily.
Hurrrurruk-
“That crazy monster!”
“Goddess Athena… forgive us for our failure to protect the temple…”
“You’re venting your anger inside the temple right now… but the arrow clearly didn’t go through!”
“We have to get in somehow, but it’s not easy!”
“The damn fire is relentless…!”
Once again, a fierce fire burns in the center of the temple.
Bellerophon rode Pegasus around the burning temple, but the creature was nowhere to be seen.
It’s clear that the Chimera is inside, but to enter the narrow temple, you have to get off Pegasus.
But without Pegasus, could Bellerophon, a mere mortal, defeat that monster?
Without Pegasus… could he avoid that steely hide and stick a spear into its throat?

Bellerophon, riding on his steed in the air, was soon discovered by many people in distress.
Those exposed to the threat of monsters desperately searched for a lifeline.
“Listen, have you received help from the gods? That monster hasn’t come out of the temple since a while ago!”
“A winged horse…? Did the gods send a messenger?”
“…anyone over there, please help Rakia!”
A hero gritting his teeth as he looks at people covered in ashes and disfigured by burns.
Then came the urgent voice of King Iobates.
King Iobates seen among the numerous soldiers surrounding the temple.
“Bellerophon! You are certainly loved by the gods!”
“Your Majesty Iobates?! How did you get here…”
“Which king would not personally take charge of a temple in the country he rules when it is in danger?”
Although King Iobates believed his son-in-law’s letter, he sent Bellerophon to his death.
However, as soon as he saw Bellerophon riding on a winged horse, he realized his mistake and called for him.
“Bellerophon! Come here for a moment!”
“Yes? Okay!”
He handed over a letter from his bosom and spoke to Bellerophon, who had just disembarked from Pegasus.
His eyes were filled with regret and sorrow.
“No… this is…!”
“Yes, in fact, the letter my son-in-law sent… was asking me to kill you for seducing his wife…”
“You didn’t tell me to kill the Chimera… This is a misunderstanding! I…”
“…How could a hero who was given such words by God desire a wife who already had a husband? I have finally realized my mistake, and I am truly sorry…”
King Iobates approached Bellerophon and placed his hand on his shoulder.
The old king’s eyes met the hero’s.
“I really did something bad to you, but… can I ask you to take care of that monster?”
“…!”
“…Please. You are the only hero here.”
The surrounding soldiers are astonished at the sight of the king bowing his head and asking a commoner for help.
Bellerophon, chewing his lip until it bled, knelt on one knee before the king and shouted:
“Of course! The gods gave me Pegasus to kill that bastard… I will complete my task!”
No matter how much he was filled with a sense of honor and responsibility for the task, he was still a hero.
My heart was deeply moved when I saw the temple of the goddess burning and people dying.
The one who put the wedge there was the king who put aside his pride and bowed his head for the safety of his people.
Without waiting for the king’s answer, he went into the burning temple with a spear carrying a leaden lump.
Thud thud.
Without the Pegasus sent by God, I can’t fight that monster with only a spear with a lead pole attached to it.
I will definitely die. I will probably die in excruciating pain with my whole body burning.
But a hero is…
“Bellerophon!”
“Please… be safe…”
“May the protection of Athena be with you!”
He is a hero because he does not back down even in the face of inevitable death.

As Bellerophon entered the temple through the flames, all he could see was a sea of fire.
As if the lion-headed creature had gone berserk, hot air blasted out from all directions, oppressing him.
“Ugh…”
Visibility is poor due to black smoke, flying ashes, fleeing people, and fierce fire…
Where is that monster… Where is he?

As he went deeper and deeper into the temple, he found the Chimera looking at him with reddened eyes.
And then he flew straight behind the marble pillar.
Hurrrurruk-
He discovered Bellerophon and immediately hid himself from the blazing fire,
The environment here was too unfavorable for him.
An environment so hot that you don’t even have to be hit head-on, the acrid air making your chest burn with every breath you take.
The winged horses given by God are outside, and there are no other allies inside the temple.
It is a truly desperate situation where life is at stake.
Hurrrurruk-
“Ugh!”
He swallows a sigh of relief as he flies his body once again.
You can’t avoid it forever. When you’re tightrope walking, there will definitely come a time when you fall.
I’m already out of breath and my back feels hot.
Did it just get a little bit touched by the flames? I’m scared of the sound of its growling.
Krrrrrr-
The Chimera slowly approaches Bellerophon, who is hiding behind a pillar.
The monster’s reaction speed far surpassed Bellerophon’s.
Even if you throw the spear straight from your mouth, it’s not like you’re throwing it from above Pegasus…
I’ll be engulfed in that enormous flame and melt into thin air.
Then there was only one way: to put it directly into the bastard’s mouth.
But then he’d be engulfed in flames by an angry monster…
Krrrr-
Bellerophon, leaning against the hot marble pillar and hiding from the monster, closed his eyes tightly.
He had always wanted to become a hero, and even a god. So he tried to go to Thebes according to the oracle given to the whole world…
Because of his sin of accidentally killing his brother, he was forced to seek refuge in another kingdom.
There was a rumor that if you went to Thebes, the gods themselves would train you, and you would receive the blessings and weapons of the gods and go through an intense schedule…
Even if only half of the rumors were true, it was clear that anyone who passed the test there would become a hero.
So does that mean that he who did not go to Thebes is not a hero?
Ugh.
The sound of Chimera’s footsteps gradually came closer.
If he finds this place and spits out fire, he’s dead.
In the mind of Bellerophon, there were people dying in the blazing fire…
King Iobates passed by, bowing his head to him.
And from some point on, the dream that was buried deep in his heart, the ambition to definitely accomplish amazing feats and become a god.
Suddenly.
Krrrr!
Bellerophon did not wait for the monster to approach, but jumped up and ran towards it.
Hot flames burst out of the Chimera’s gaping mouth as it discovered him, but he did not stop.
Hurrrurruk-
“Bellerophon will prove that you can become a hero without going to Thebes!!!”
My body is covered in burning flames. It’s hot. It’s hot. It’s hot. It’s so hot!
My skin, my hands, my arms, my legs, my whole body are burning.
The muscles I trained melted away, and the strength left my hand holding the spear.
Both of his eyes were melting and he couldn’t see ahead, and his legs were in pain.
But the hero never let go of the spear in his hand until the very end.
Phew.
Khuuuuung-!!!
Until he got stuck in the mouth of the monster he was targeting.
* * *
For a while, the screams of the monster that had been wailing in pain inside the temple died down and the flames went out.
The soldiers surrounding the temple entered, bringing water and putting out small sparks.
Then, the soldiers at the very front discovered something.
“This is!”
“Your Majesty! I think you should… see that!”
Once safety was secured, King Iobates entered and discovered two corpses in the middle of the temple.
A chimera with a spear in its mouth was lying on the ground, black smoke belching from its maw…
A blackened figure, presumed to be Bellerophon, was found dead, standing with his spear thrust into the mouth of the Chimera.
Everyone was awed by the horrific yet sublime sight.
“You never let go of the spear in your hand…”
“Your Majesty, perhaps the lead from the spear in the Chimera’s mouth melted in the flames and entered her stomach.”
“With hot molten lead in its stomach, even a monster has no choice but to die…”
“He is truly a hero…”
The lead on the spear in Chimera’s mouth melted due to the flames it breathed out.
The molten lead flowed into his stomach… and he appeared to have died.
“Umm… Collect Bellerophon’s body.”
“yes!”
Passs …
Bellerophon’s corpse, or rather, that black figure that is too embarrassing to even call a corpse…
As soon as the soldiers touched it, it collapsed and turned to ash.
Purruk…
Pegasus, who had come in without notice, also let out a short cry as if he was saddened by his death.
King Iobates, who had been looking at the dead Chimera and Bellerophon for a long time, spoke in a heavy voice.
“…Erect a statue of Bellerophon, the hero who saved our Lakia.”
“Yes! I understand!”
“May the protection of the god Pluto be with the hero.”
“Oh Athena…”
I hope you receive your reward even in the afterlife.
