My Villains Episode 163
40. Again, the pursuers (7)
A narrow road wound down a mountainside covered with trees.
At first glance, the trail looked like an ordinary dirt road, but it was actually a remnant of an empire that fell centuries ago. The evidence was the gravel, clay, and ashlar that remained deep beneath the ground.
The two men were quietly looking at the road that ran south through Longville to South Harbor in Lidburn, and north through the Royal Road to Earl’s Castle in Baden.
Of the two, the man wearing a black cloak, Tobias, opened his mouth.
“It looks like you got hit.”
It was a story about a messenger. A messenger went up the road with the command, ‘The ambush is over, come down and join us.’
He left around noon and did not return until the sun was down to shoulder height. What that meant was clear.
“… … It seems so. Regan, that bastard must have suffered too.”
Randal, a mercenary with a long spear leaning on his shoulder, was cross-legged and glaring across the road. This is the exact point where the flat hill with a wide view ends and the dense forest and steep slope begin.
“How many did you say there are?”
“… … How many? “How many of Regan’s kids?”
” yes.”
“Twenty-two or three? “I guess that’s about it.”
“How are your skills?”
Randall narrowed his eyes for a moment, thinking of Riggan and his men.
“Matt and Iltan are pretty good with crossbows. Despite his appearance, Regan is strong and strong. “Other guys act like people too.”
Tobias was lost in thought with both hands placed on the pummel of his long sword.
‘If we assume that the moment the ambush was discovered was when the fire was lit, then twenty veteran mercenaries were annihilated in less than thirty minutes.’
When the young man fell silent, Randall spat on the floor and frowned.
“But X-pal, what if you wrinkle your face? “Didn’t you have a solution?”
“I was just thinking about something else for a moment. “I have a book for you, so don’t be scared.”
“… … Are you scared? Ha, are you saying that to me?”
Randall, who was growling softly, gritted his teeth and continued speaking when Tobias did not even look at him.
“Do you think I’m doing this because I’m scared? huh? “I’m just reconfirming what was agreed upon.”
“… … Did you say OK?”
“okay. As we agreed in advance, we have no intention of dealing with the Fire Witch. “This is especially true in places like this.”
Randall said this and spread his hands towards the surroundings. The low hill with few trees was practically an open field. It is the perfect terrain for a wizard to be active in.
“Do you know what that means? That means if you don’t do something about that bitch, we’re going to get the hell out of here. “Because that’s what was agreed upon.”
“If that’s the case, there’s nothing to worry about. “We will take care of the fire witch.”
“I have no intention of dealing with a bloody swordsman and a red bear at the same time. “If that partner goes on a rampage at the same time, most of our children will fall behind.”
Tobias nodded, caressing his thick left forearm.
“Leave that to me too.”
“••••••red.”
Randall, who had been wiggling his nose at the very firm answer, lost his temper for no reason.
“But damn, are these bastards coming back? “How long do I have to wait?”
“came.”
“what?”
“I said I was coming. excuse me.”
Randall quickly looked away at Tobias’ chin gesture. On the other side of the path, a man was trudging out from between the bushes.
A handsome man with unusual height, broad shoulders, a cold expression, and sharp eyes. It was Phoenix.
He was wearing iron scale armor lined with wolf fur and an iron helmet with a long nose bridge. He was carrying on his shoulders a round shield with three or four crossbow bolts sticking out about his feet, and three javelins, and his entire body was covered in armor covered in blood.
Randall, who had been distracted by Phoenix for a moment, quickly glanced around him. However, no matter how much he looked, only Poynix emerged from the thick bushes.
“… … Why are you alone? “What about the rest?”
Tobias remained silent while Randall mumbled.
‘Are you trying to do something? ‘It’s a pain in the ass.’ Phoenix walked slowly towards the two men who were frowning like that.
He had a smile on his face.
5k 5k 5k
As I walked, I smiled, pretending to be relaxed. Still, I quickly glanced around.
There were only two people in sight.
Two men blocking the narrow road.
Randal, armed with chain armor and a long spear, and a young man wearing a black cloak, looked vaguely familiar.
The eyes were focused on those two, but the nose and ears were sensing other enemies.
The strangely fragrant smell of body odor, the smell of grooming oil, small whispers, and the sound of rustling across the grass are everywhere. There must be quite a few people hiding under the gentle slope that cannot be seen from here.
… … It just gives off a vibe of living.
I stopped about 30 meters away from the two men and opened my mouth.
“Did Doyle send you?”
“••••••who?”
“Is it Doyle who sent you? “Count Tristan’s second son.”
Randall frowned for a moment and then burst into laughter.
“Ha, did you have a fling with Count Tristan?”
… … Is your reaction strange?
“What are you talking about? “Didn’t you come here after receiving a request from Doyle?”
“This is the one who paid us.”
Randall pointed to the young man standing next to him and smiled heartily.
“Looks like I could make some unexpected income if I cut off your head and offer it to one hundred writers. Thank you for the good information.”
Did I guess wrong?
… … Well, it was only two days ago that Doyle left Longville after being humiliated. It’s quite a short time to contact those mercenaries and ask them to kill me.
I shifted my gaze towards the young man.
He was a neat-looking man about my age, wearing a long cloak and carrying a long sword.
Suddenly, the hilt of a sword exposed through the hem of a cloak catches one’s attention. This is because the light green jewel embedded in the pummel was faintly emitting magical power.
It appears to be a magic sword, so you should be careful.
“You are the employer?”
“That’s right.”
“okay? “Then why are you targeting us?”
A young man wearing a black cloak shook his head.
“I think you misunderstood something, but I have never targeted you.”
“… … “What kind of bullshit is this?”
“That’s literally it. We have no intention of attacking Sir Phoenix.”
“Then why did you hide Regan or something? Are you going to have a surprise party?”
“It was part of an effort to gain the ‘high ground’ prior to negotiations.”
“••••••Negotiation?”
“yes.”
I laughed at the young man’s confident answer.
“Then tell me who you are first.
“Yeah?”
“If you wish.”
He searched inside his chest with his right hand, which was on the hilt of his sword. I was a little nervous and stiffened, but what the young man took out was a scroll of parchment.
“My name is Tobias, and I am entrusted by the High Judges of the capital, Lord Kingsley, Lord Jeremiah of Marva, and the seven other judges, with the power to pursue, investigate, and apprehend criminals.”
“••••♦•What?” “This certificate sets out my rights in detail and is attested by the signatures of eight judges, including Lord Kingsley. Accordingly, I respectfully request that my knight, Lord Poynix, assist me in enforcing the law.” After watching the chattering guy for a while, he suddenly opened his mouth.
“so. “You’re in public affairs, no, management?”
“If I may say so, I have a position equivalent to that.” “so? What is that position, exactly?”
“As I said, the eight magistrates, including Lord Kingsley-”
“Oh my gosh,”
As the young man was about to say something again, Randall, who had been standing silently, spat out phlegm and became angry.
“You could just be a bounty hunter, why are you sending such long text messages?”
“… … “Bounty hunter?”
As I crossed my arms, the young man wiggled his eyebrows and glanced at Randall. Randall, who didn’t notice the gaze, smiled in triumph.
“okay. I’m sure you’ve heard of ‘black wolves’, right? Human hunters led by ‘One-Eyed Dirk.’”
“… … “That’s enough.”
“Oh yeah. They say the captain has changed now. What is your name? ‘Ashur’?”
“Holy shit, can’t you just shut your mouth?”
… … What are these idiots?
After finishing a brief argument with Randall, the eyes of Tobias, a young man, turned to me again.
“Hmm. Excuse me, sir. “I made you wait.”
“Stop being polite and tell me what the bounty hunter has to do with me.”
Tobias frowned in annoyance and opened his mouth in a calm tone.
“Erenar Radhakaline. Give her what she is.”
… … Since he was a bounty hunter, I was wondering if he was targeting Ellen.
“Who is that?”
“Your colleague. “Ellen, the Fire Witch.”
“Oh, Ellen? Why him?”
“She is a vicious criminal who murdered her teacher to steal the treasure. “She deserves to be judged.”
“That was a false accusation.”
“Who was framed?”
“okay. Go tell the guys who put the bounty on you. “Sooner or later, I will show you proof that you were framed, so just wait patiently in the palace.” Tobias let out a chuckle.
“Don’t talk nonsense, Sir. The palace wizards are hoping that she will return immediately and give her account in person.”
“I guess that’s what some wizards want. “The ones who are hanging out with Galnar.”
You don’t seem to know who Galnar is. Well, there’s no way a mere bounty hunter would know the details.
The young bounty hunter was silent for a moment, then suddenly looked down at his left arm.
“Hmm, I guess I’m ready.”
“……preparation?”
“yes.”
A very handsome face had a wry smile.
“Actually, we didn’t consider things like negotiations from the beginning. Instead, I prepared something else.”
I imitated his smile as I felt the magical energy writhing in the bushes far behind me.
“It’s a coincidence.”
“Coincidence? “What do you mean?”
“Me too.”
“… … what?”
That moment.
A blazing sound came from behind, followed by a puff of heat. The faces of the two men who were facing me were twisted in shock.
“Uh oh, X arm, that… …
My image was reflected in Randall’s wide eyes. Five-pronged fireballs rising from the bushes.
“It’s a fireball, avoid it!”
Just as he was about to let out a tearing scream, the ‘accumulated fireballs’ that Ellen had carefully created over a long period of time accelerated rapidly. As the mountain birds had warned, the five fireballs flew and exploded.
Quagwagwang-!
A pillar of fire erupted from beneath the hillside.
“Ouch!”
“Uuuuuuuuu-!”
Dozens of mercenaries with fire burning all over their bodies jumped out like grasshoppers.
Looking closely, it seems that roughly 30 to 40 people survived. Considering the thinly spread siege network, that many people would have been caught in the explosion and died.
“Hey, hey—”
Randall’s eyes widened and he grabbed Tobias by the collar.
“You bastard-!”
“Damn it, let go of this!”
By the time Tobias shook off Randall, I had already thrown the javelin and kicked it to the ground.
Sigh!
“Pfft”
Tobias managed to twist his upper body and catch the javelin with his right shoulder. It looks like he was wearing armor under his cloak, with only the blade of a spear stuck into it.
“Ugh
Gritting his teeth, Tobias drew his long sword and aimed it at me.
“Deno!”
With that starting word, the green gem embedded in the long sword’s pummel flashed and began to shine. Then, something like a green string flew in like a beam of light.
As I was running as if I was hitting the ground and pulling out my second javelin, I couldn’t even react. The green ropes flew faster than an arrow and immediately entangled my whole body.
It was a ‘binding’ spell.
“What a piece of shit-”
As I was struggling and swearing in a situation where I couldn’t move, an angry Randall lunged at me.
“You bastard, how dare my mercenary group-!”
Boom.
The powerfully swung polearm rushed towards my head. I fell down on my side with my whole body tied up and tried to avoid the attack, but the spear struck my side.
puck!
“Wow.”
Not only did it hurt like a dog, but there was no way to resist the ensuing attacks.
Randall took a couple of steps back, retrieved his polearm, then took another couple of steps and stabbed. It was an exquisite stab aimed between his neck and chest.
“Ugh.”
I desperately bounced my back and struggled. But Randall persistently extended his spear blade and finally succeeded in stabbing me in the neck.
Kagak!
“O Ah”
When the blade of the spear touched his skin and sparks flew, Randall narrowed his eyes in embarrassment.
It would feel as if I had been stabbed with a stone rather than flesh. It was the effect of ‘Rock Skin’, a defensive spell cast by the wizard Siren while sprinkling granite powder.
It was fortunate that my life was saved, but I could feel the spell breaking as I blocked the stab.
“Huh, okay. Let’s do it.”
Randall adjusted his long spear and smiled coldly.
… … Ugh, am I really going to die if this continues?
Suddenly feeling a sense of crisis, I gathered all the strength I had from breastfeeding and shook off my arms and legs.
“Turn it off!”
There is also a moment of resistance. The green ropes that were binding me shattered with a metallic sound.
He then rolled on the ground to avoid the spear blade, flipped his shoulder, grabbed the shield he was carrying, pulled out Hrunting, and rammed it into Randall’s stomach.
Sigh!
“Kuhuhuh-”
Randall fell forward with a sound of deflation.
At that moment, a faint sound was heard between the desperate screams of the dog and the people.
Tung.
A sound like plucking a string.
I instinctively raised my shield and lowered my posture. Sure enough, the crossbow that flew in unexpectedly hit the shield.
Tobias had fired it.
The guy had his left arm sleeve rolled up, and there was a small crossbow attached to his forearm.
“Ha, you use a cute toy.”
Ignoring my vicious growl, Tobias fell flat on the floor.
… … What are you doing, you bastard?
I’m having doubts about that strange movement.
Hwaak
“uh?”
From the original shield, to be exact, something that looked like a stick tied to the short crossbow shot by Tobias was emitting white light.
“… … what is this.”
Before I felt anxious, a strong light flashed from a cliff to the east, as if answering a signal. A landscape that looks like huge white flowers are blooming.
… … It feels somehow familiar. I think I saw this somewhere.
“Phoenix, I will join you!”
Amias’ voice came from behind. Ute Kwai’s loud shouts were also present.
“no!”
I threw down the shield with the crossbow shaft stuck in it and let out a yell that was close to a scream.
“Do not come! “Go away-”
Before I could even shout, before the shield I threw away flew far away.
With the tinnitus, my vision turned pure white.
Next, my vision went dark.
Gurgling!
As the northern sky flashed, a man who appeared to be in his early 40s brushed off his short beard.
“It’s a strange thing.”
The man was wearing armor made of multiple curved black iron plates. At first glance, it was similar to plate armor, but it had rough irregularities here and there, giving it a sharp appearance.
Eight men, including the bearded man, were sitting in the shade of a dense forest. There wasn’t even a fire lit.
Two of the eight were dressed like the bearded man. The remaining five were wearing armor reinforced with iron shields over chainmail.
Among the men wearing iron-clad surcoats, a young man with one ear cut off opened his mouth.
“It’s a sight I’ve never seen before in Eyland.”
“It would be rare even here.”
“okay.”
All eight men had a sturdy physique and black hair and dark eyes.
They implicitly gave off a desolate atmosphere and had wooden features that were somehow out of balance.
“I can’t wait to go back.”
“me too.”
They were expressionless, as if they were wearing masks.
If you look closely, the faces that give off a strange feeling look so strangely similar to each other that you would believe that all eight of them were brothers.
An even more bizarre person has been added to this strangely bizarre group.
“The princess is coming.”
At someone’s muttering, the eight men stood up all at once. And a moment later, a woman appeared with the sound of horse hooves.
“Princess.”
A woman drove a horse and approached the eight men who were quietly bowing.
She was a beautiful woman.
Hair as black as the night sky and skin as white as the moon. Clear eyes, small ears, straight nose, and red lips with ideal proportions.
She was as expressionless as the eight men, but somehow she glowed. Unlike men who have a somewhat twisted appearance and atmosphere, women… … .
It was ‘complete’.
At least, that’s how it seemed.
The woman called Princess gave an order.
“Follow me.”
“yes.” The eight men mounted their horses that they had tied up nearby. When I looked again, all nine of them, including the princess, were riding flawless black horses.
A black satin cloak over a red vest waved like a flag. After that, eight riders followed.
Heavily armed men followed the woman, who only had gold buttons on her vest and a ruby brooch that fastened her cloak.
The bearded man had his horse’s head aligned with the princess.
“Where are you going?”
“The place where the lightning struck.”
The man was silent. The princess added her words as if they were flowing in the wind.
“I felt magic.”
“Are you talking about lightning strikes?”
“yes.”
“There are very few wizards who can summon lightning.”
“And most of them are in palaces.”
Silence again. The princess blinked her narrowed eyes a couple of times due to the headwind.
“I saw Wizards of the Palace at South Harbour. “They were people who lost their cards to pickpockets.”
“I remember. “You said that Prince Silver’s viper played a shallow trick.”
“They were chasing the fire witch.”
The bearded man was silent again. The princess did not open her mouth again.
The sound of horses’ hooves sounded loud. The iron-studded surcoat also cried loudly.
The coat of arms had a coat of arms embroidered on it. It was a sentence with a black snake and a white snake drawn on a red circle.
The two snakes were tightly entangled with each other.
