My Villains Episode 029
8. The mill and the undertaker (3)
The happy time came to an end when there was a sudden loud noise. It sounded like a wooden door being smashed.
A group of people approached the barn, accompanied by loud shouts.
Oh, what kind of bastards are they? Why not now?
I cursed under my breath and stood up, gently pushing Daria away.
“Hueup, poi?”
“Who is coming? “There are several people.”
At my words, Daria quickly regained focus in her eyes and wiped her lips with her sleeve.
“Well, aren’t they people who came to the mill?”
“well.”
Feeling somewhat ominous, I picked up Pulsion and Buckler.
Even though he didn’t have a helmet or breastplate, he was confident that he could take on even a local gangster.
•••Are you confident about your opponent? Chop up all the raw fish with pulse? Just hitting the goal.
Since graduating from high school, I have lived my entire life without having a single fight. I can’t believe that I, such a model citizen, can adapt so well to this shit world. I’m so moved.
While I was thinking that, a rumbling noise came closer.
“Hey, there isn’t one, right? “Is this right here?”
“Hey, I guess it’s there.”
“Are you sure it’s just the two of you?”
“Ah, that’s right, man.”
For a moment, I heard whispering, and then six or seven men appeared in front of the barn.
“Huh, there are really only two of us.”
“The armor looks pretty good too?”
“Right? “These bastards don’t trust me!”
The men who appeared – no, in fact, they were boys in their late teens who were awkward to even call men.
They were armed with long spears, a bill (a type of polearm) with a wide and large blade, and a heavy ax that did not match their sloppy outfit.
But things like long spears and billets are weapons only used by soldiers, right? Where did the local gangsters get something like that?
Anyway, this damn city is really a mess. I can’t go anywhere without feeling safe.
“Po, poi… .”
“are you okay.”
I reassured Daria and stepped forward, but they started talking among themselves.
“But will it be okay? That guy looks like a mercenary-”
“Are you pecking at one guy, you idiot?”
“Hey, hey. “Look at the woman behind you.”
“Wow, Mr. Was there a girl like that in this neighborhood? “Rick, let’s hang out for a bit.”
As one of the skinny guys spoke, licking his lips, the guy named Rick glanced at Daria, swallowed, and answered.
“I crave it, but- oh, no. “I need to get out of here before the security guards chase me.”
“Can’t I catch him? “If you look at a large mercenary group, you’ll see that they also have maids who wash dishes and do laundry.”
“•••okay? “Is that so?”
Well, I can roughly guess what kind of guys they are. It seems that the foolish idiots are planning to steal the weapon and run out of the city.
Although they were like neighborhood gangsters, they had to be careful since they had heavy military weapons in their hands. Even if you swing it with only your weight on it, your limbs will fly off.
I slowly released my wrists, raised my buckler and Pulsion, and got ready to fight.
Then the people who were chatting among themselves silently said,
“•••What, let’s give it a try? “Why don’t you just quietly leave the money and the woman?”
“Rick. “Swords and armor too.”
“Yes, hand over the sword and armor.”
The guy who seemed to be the leader of the gang frowned and lowered his voice. So, the guy was a kid with a lot of acne on his face.
Thanks to my experience fighting against the ferocious iron masked warriors, these idiots just looked ridiculous.
So I smiled and opened my mouth.
“Stop talking bullshit, you little bastards.”
“•••Young bastard?”
“okay. “Don’t act reckless and get stabbed, go home and suck your mother’s milk.”
When I spoke in a cheerful tone, their faces distorted grimly.
“•••Ha, is this crazy? Do you think they will scare you if you show off? “This big bastard.”
Looking at them, it didn’t look like they would be easily defeated. About three or four people had to lose their limbs to come to their senses.
Since they were young, I just wanted to scare them away… I guess I can’t help it.
The moment they were about to draw their palms with pulse to use the skill, someone appeared behind them and shouted.
“for a moment! “Young people, stop for a moment!”
…what?
The person who appeared shouting like that was an old man wearing a wide-brimmed black hat and a black coat.
To describe an old man –
He gave the impression of an old gentleman who was more suited to the modern era than the medieval era. Should I say that it feels like I’m going to take out a pocket watch from my chest at any moment? Even if I was wearing a monocle, I didn’t seem to feel any discomfort.
The outfit looked simple at first glance, but the tunic underneath was shiny and seemed quite luxurious. There was a little dirt on the leather shoes and coat sleeves, but the rest was as clean as if it had just been washed.
Although he had a normal build, he had his back straight and was not using a cane. He also had a fairly loud voice and seemed very gentle for his age.
The shaved beard was impressive, but what caught my eye even more were the eyes visible through the deep wrinkles. His deep blue eyes seemed to have a wiseness appropriate for his age.
And crucially.
I wasn’t familiar with that face.
“for a moment-! “Young people, stop for a moment!”
Unlike me, who carefully looked at the old man who suddenly appeared, the young bullies just looked back and swore.
“what? “This old man.”
“If you don’t want to get hurt, get away from me.”
These kids have no respect for the elderly. As a Confucian scholar, I can’t just watch this.
“No blood has dried on this head,”
As I was about to curse at them, the old man in the black hat threw up his hands and burst into laughter.
“Hehe, wait, wait. “Please wait a moment.”
“Oh, what? “Stop being a bother, get out of here, old man.”
“I want to do that too, but… “I’m worried about you.”
“What bullshit? “What are you worried about?”
The boys frowned and glared at them, but the old man still smiled calmly.
“Everyone knows that there was a public execution yesterday, right? “And one of the executioners there was beaten to death?”
Ah, I know this story. I heard it from Daria on the way.
As horrible as it was to me, beheading was one of the greatest sights in the world.
The reason is… I do not know. Because this is an opportunity to feel that public order has been restored at least a little? Or because towels or bread soaked in the blood of executed prisoners are sold at a high price?
what. Whatever the reason, it is said that a beheading was carried out yesterday, and a huge crowd of people gathered in the square because of it. In front of that crowd, a young executioner made a mistake.
The death row inmate’s head could not be cut off in one go. If he had been an experienced executioner he would have calmly finished off, but the young man did not.
He impatiently swung the beheading sword again, and this time he struck the executioner’s arm. The crowd who witnessed this was enraged.
This was due to a superstition that if the head was not cut off with one blow, the spirit of the executed inmate would hold a grudge and bring bad luck. However, since he failed to cut off his head twice, he thought a great disaster would come.
The angry crowd immediately dragged the young executioner away and trapped him. He eventually died after being beaten for a long time.
•••I was listening to the story, but I didn’t know where to start. Is it really a fucked up world?
anyway. They looked at each other and asked the old man if they knew this story.
“however. “What is that?”
Then the old man lowered his voice and continued talking.
“Fanis, who had been beaten, was brought here, right there! Yes, right where you guys are standing. “I stopped breathing there.”
“You crazy old man. “What are you talking about?”
“Listen. Mr. Panis was scheduled to see his child next month. But since he died so vainly, how deep is the resentment? So, Mr. Panis’s vengeful spirit is still wandering around here. “To find someone to vent my anger on.”
Despite the old man’s threats, the gangsters only snorted and growled.
“Do you think we are the old man’s grandchildren? “Did you think that if I told you something scary, you would run away trembling?”
“Oh, of course not. No matter how old I am, there is no way I would do something like that with grown men. Still, wouldn’t it be good to at least give a warning?”
“What warning?”
The old man’s gaze, which had been directed at them, slowly moved upward. Then he pointed his finger at the bullies’ heads and whispered.
“Look, above your heads.”
“Over your head?”
They raised their heads following the old man’s hand. Then my face went pale.
Grumbling.
Blue flames were wandering aimlessly and staggeringly through the air. A small flame appears dimly in the bright daylight.
It was a will-o’-the-wisp. At the moment when the gangsters stopped breathing in shock, the old man suddenly let out a loud yell.
“It is the soul of Mr. Fanis! “Hurry and run to the church!”
“Ugh!”
“W-what is that!”
“Bounce!”
The gangsters were distraught and screaming, then passed the old man and started to run away.
Daria, who was hiding behind me, must have been scared as well and pulled my wrist with a trembling hand.
“Poy, poi – let’s go to church quickly!”
“No, you don’t have to. “You can rest assured.”
“but… “It’s scary.”
“I said it’s okay.”
I put the Pulsion into the sheath and wrapped my arms around Daria’s shoulders.
“There is no need to be afraid. That’s just… “Because it’s like magic.”
As I said that, a lone old man was approaching us. The will-o’-the-wisps floating in the sky had already disappeared.
“Is that right, old man?”
“Hehe, you have a good sense of vision. “Can you excuse me for a moment?”
“Oh, of course.”
As we stepped aside, the old man went into the barn and returned with a shovel. Then he shrugged his shoulders with a smile on his wrinkled face.
“I have to dig, but the shovel is broken or something. “I was just coming to borrow it from the mill.” “You’re selling land?”
“That’s right. “There is someone who needs to be buried.”
There is someone who needs to be buried.
It wasn’t a big deal, but I didn’t think it was a sentence that suited an old person very well.
“Are you sure… … Isn’t this a ‘bloody swordsman’?”
Ugh, this guy’s nickname is always unpleasant whenever I hear it. Who the hell built it?
Even though I was grumbling inside, I nodded with a calm face.
“There is a nickname like that. “It’s called phoenix.”
“Hehe, that’s right. Nice to meet you, Poynix. “I expected that from the way you were dressed.”
“What’s your outfit?”
“I see. Thanks to hearing some pretty detailed rumors, I figured it out at a glance. By the way, are there any injuries? “You and the girl behind you?”
“We are fine. “I owe you a debt of gratitude, old man.”
At my words, the old man smiled broadly and shook his head.
“What is your situation? I’m just afraid that young people might lose their lives because of a moment’s mistake. “It’s never fun to bury a young person.”
“Haha, I didn’t mean to kill you. I tried to just take care of it… .”
“Oh, did you? “I guess I meddled for no reason.”
“No, no. “It’s better to avoid fighting.”
“Yes, yes. It’s better to avoid fighting. It would be nice if all young people were like you… “Oh my.”
The old man, who had been muttering with excitement, looked surprised and took off his black hat.
Then, his neat white hair, oiled and slicked back, was revealed. Seeing his face so fully revealed, I was certain of the old man’s identity.
“You didn’t introduce me.”
Saying that, the old man offered to shake my hand. When I held it together, I felt the long, thin fingers and the rough palm that did not match them.
I looked into the old man’s deep eyes and reviewed the information about him.
“My name is ‘Luke.’”
The old man’s name was Popaluk.
“It’s an undertaker’s funeral.”
He was a seeker of ‘Yeonggeummun’ and a necromancer.
“•••Nice to meet you, Mr. Luke.”
As I answered like that, I barely suppressed the cheers that threatened to burst out.
•••Hehehe, long live!
Now, let’s eat until Chapter 5!
