The Hero Who Returned From Death Quits - Chapter 208
EP10. The Falling Twilight
Since when did I stop having dreams like this?
I thought that as I looked at the scenery in front of me. The scenery I was seeing right now was not a very pleasant sight.
The me in front of my eyes was writhing under the black magic of the Demon King. But I was trying to smile.
-But, even if I smiled like that, it didn’t make the pain go away.
In fact, I felt like I was going crazy from the pain that resonated through every bone in my body. Every time I felt death approaching, my whole body felt like it was going to shiver.
And I was looking at that sight.
The pain I felt back then was being looked at by the present me. It was a few weeks from now. But to me, it was a picture of the past that had not even been a day.
I felt a shiver, my body trembling.
It felt unreasonable that it was only a single death, a process I had already experienced countless times in the past, yet it caused me such a mental shock that it came to me in my dreams and tormented me.
Why am I suffering so much?
I tried to convince myself that it was nothing, but it didn’t make me feel better. On the contrary, doing so only made me realize that I was in pain, which only made me feel more miserable.
As I smiled, my past self was gradually losing its breath.
I took a deep breath. I am dreaming. I am not dying. I told myself this, trying to come to my senses.
But my mind, unfortunately, would not follow my own control, and when I came to, I found myself crawling on the ground, dying.
“Ugh…”
Even though I knew it was a dream, the pain I felt was real. It felt like my entire body’s internal organs were going to spill out. Even though I knew it was a dream, I felt like my consciousness was being clouded by the pain.
A dream that was out of control. Pain filling my whole body. I crawled on the ground, feeling it all.
And then I looked up.
The Demon King was sending me a cold gaze right in front of my eyes.
I tried to control my expression when I saw that sight. Even if it was a dream, I didn’t want to show weakness to the enemy who was going to kill me and be laughed at. That’s why I smiled in that state, even in my dream, with my expression hidden.
I felt time gradually slowing down. However, it was different from what I usually felt in reality. In reality, the death I felt right before I died was a unique feeling of haziness, and the pain was blurred, but now, even though I felt time slowing down, the pain continued, and I thought it was more painful than reality.
‘What the fuck…’
I blurted out those words in my mind. How could a dream be more painful than reality? It was absurd that I couldn’t wake up from that kind of pain.
The thought that I would never be able to wake up from this dream began to creep into my mind. Whether that was true or not, my life in the dream was slowly fading away even as I thought about it.
When my life in the dream finally completely faded away, I opened my eyes.
“…Ah, uh.”
I made that sound as soon as I woke up. My throat was dry, so my voice was hoarse and not pleasant to hear even in empty words. The bed was soaking wet with sweat, which made me feel uncomfortable.
I tried to get up from my seat. I didn’t know what time it was, and my whole body felt heavy. Above all, my throat was dry.
And then I felt a hand laying me down again.
A cold hand wrapped around my forehead. I couldn’t resist that touch and lay back down on the bed.
“lay down.”
It was Feria’s voice. I barely managed to look at her. Feria looked at me and continued speaking.
“Your body is on fire. You must be tired. Just lie down. I’ll get you some water.”
As she said that, Peria poured me some water. I sat up and drank the water. After quenching my thirst, I finally felt like I could live.
Finally, after drinking the water, I came to my senses and looked at Peria and said.
“…Why are you here?”
Feria looked at me with worried eyes, checked my body temperature, and then opened her mouth.
“That girl… no, Grandis told me what happened to you. So I was worried, so I was checking to see if you were sleeping well.”
“…Yeah. That’s it. Then, while I was at it,”
“I saw you groaning. You even had a fever. You seemed to be having a nightmare, but there was nothing I could do about it, so I cast a spell to at least bring down the fever. But since I’m not a priest, it didn’t seem to work very well.”
In Feria’s voice as she spoke, her concern for me was evident.
“I see, thank you.”
I expressed my gratitude for her consideration. I don’t know if it was because of the water or her, but I felt a little better and my head was a little clearer.
Feria looked at me as I said that and came close to me and said.
“…Again, you died?”
She looked at me and said. I just nodded slightly, lying on the bed without saying anything.
“How much time.”
I opened my mouth, closed it again, hesitated for a moment, and then was able to answer.
“…3 weeks.”
Hearing that, Peria sighed deeply.
“Haaa… I don’t know what to say about this. Has it been a long time since I’ve returned? No, a few weeks would be a short time. I’m not sure.”
“that is…”
Feria climbed onto the bed and hugged me as I opened my mouth. Then she spoke in a voice that sounded like she was about to cry.
“…You don’t have to say anything.”
“…”
I looked at her. I looked around carefully and saw that it was late at night. That meant that Peria had been watching me until this hour. I realized this and tried to speak hurriedly, but Peria opened her mouth before I could.
“I… have no intention of saying anything about you taking up the Holy Sword again. And I don’t want to say anything.”
“…”
“No matter what the process was, in the end, you already held the Holy Sword… That’s because you thought you couldn’t win with us alone. Because you thought you couldn’t win, you took up the Holy Sword again, even if it meant going through all that pain again. But, but… At least don’t try to shoulder what you’ve been through alone.”
She spoke, tightening her grip on me. Of course, it didn’t feel painful or stuffy, since her arms were thin and had spent their entire lives studying, but I could tell what she was thinking and what state of mind she was in as she spoke.
“It’s so miserable to see you suffer alone and not be able to do anything, to just watch without knowing anything…”
She soon began to sob.
“There’s nothing I can do about you becoming a warrior again. Unfortunately, I don’t have the power to change what has already happened. But at least, I want to share in the pain you’re going through. I don’t want to just watch you suffer alone, having nightmares.”
I hugged her. She hugged me back, and soon she kissed me.
I felt my head clear. Feria lay down next to my bed and stayed with me until I fell asleep again.
…
The Demon King’s expression hardened as he glimpsed the future through his power.
‘what?’
From noble mtl dot com
He thought so. The reason was that the scenery he saw through the future was an unbelievable sight.
‘The appearance of the future has changed.’
Clearly, the future he had seen was one where his enemies would collapse as he attacked. However, the future he saw once again had suddenly become very different.
‘Rather than collapsing under attack, it actually…’
Not only did he withstand the attacks of his own followers, he went one step further and reduced a significant number of his followers, without even capturing a single castle.
‘Why did this happen?’
The Demon King felt an eerie feeling. He couldn’t even imagine what would have happened if he had attacked without even thinking about using his power one more time.
And only then could the Demon King be certain. There was an entity in the enemy camp that could completely change the future he had predicted.
‘…I guess I’ll have to give up on the attack.’
If he attacked without being able to devise another method, he would only be defeated in the future he had glimpsed. The Demon King eventually called one of his subjects.
“This attack is canceled. The content of the power has changed.”
When his subjects looked surprised upon hearing those words, the Demon King hardened his face and began to calculate the future.
