The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 106

Episode 106
“I hope you slept well last night.”
Quilbian smiled as he looked at Kuhad, who was sitting on the sofa across from him.
“Yes. I had a comfortable stay. The inn you recommended was very comfortable.”
I didn’t sleep, but I had a good time anyway. It was fun to watch Idril snore loudly. It was also fun to watch him stop breathing and gasp in the middle of the night.
“The guards said they found two burned bodies this morning. Strangely enough, only the arms were burned.”
“okay.”
“Because they are villages adjacent to the castle, they are quite concerned about public safety, but there are some aspects of human feelings that are not governed by law.”
“Yes.”
“Thank you for organizing it.”
Quilbian asked with a smile after drinking his coffee.
“I wonder if I killed the wrong person.”
“No way. They were guys who got involved in various things in the back alleys. It was a bitter relationship that I had to leave alone even though I knew I had to get rid of them.”
“Well, then that’s it. If not, then it doesn’t really matter.”
Quilbian looked into Kuhad’s eyes. When they met, it became clear. The two bugs that appeared right away were sent by Kuhad.
“We’ll have to look into the wanted murderer a bit more, but the faces look so similar that it’ll be hard to stop suspecting him right away.”
“You don’t have to worry about what I think. There must be rules to the territory.”
“It makes me feel better when you say it like that.”
“Oh, but I need to find out something through that friend of mine, so can I take him with me for a while?”
“I won’t make a separate issue while Lord Quilbian is holding it.”
“I feel embarrassed to say this after telling you not to care about what others think.”
“Please feel free to speak comfortably as long as it is coordinated in advance.”
Kuhad gestured. The woman who had been standing timidly by the office door approached.
“He was a friend who worked as a librarian at the Royal Library in Natha. He was interested in all sorts of things and kept a lot of things in his head.”
Quilbian looked at the woman wearing large glasses and held out his hand.
“Nice to meet you. This is Quilbian.”
“My name is Elcoco. Call me El or Coco, whatever you prefer.”
“Call me Coco.”
“yes.”
Elcoco stumbled backwards, lost his balance, and stumbled violently. Fortunately, he did not fall.
“You don’t seem to have any athletic ability, but you walk looking ahead.”
“Do that.”
Only after Kuhad finished speaking did Elcoco turn around and leave the office.
“You can get what you need through that child.”
“Your debt keeps piling up in your ledger. What do you want me to do for you?”
“It’s about the pioneer area I mentioned before.”
“Please tell me.”
Kuhad unfolded the rolled-up map.
“This is the territory I govern, and this is where the development work was carried out. The first immigrants found a usable site and settled down… … .”
Kuhad trailed off, pressing his index finger on the map.
“What’s the problem?”
“About half of them are dead.”
“What about the sign?”
“I can’t tell. It wasn’t a band of bandits or a pack of wild beasts that attacked the village. There’s no trace of the body.”
“How strange.”
“I tried to hire a competent spirit master to figure out the situation, but things got messed up and the spirit master I was supposed to visit ended up going to another place. It’s a common occurrence. There are many people who are lacking, and resources are limited.”
It was Kuhad who smiled bitterly.
“Are the refugees the survivors of that place?”
“Yes. I was planning on calling him to the territory and observing the situation before sending him back, but he chose to escape on the way back.”
Kuhad paused for a moment and looked into Quilbian’s eyes.
“Do you feel uncomfortable with this situation and my decision?”
“Are you trying to figure out my personality?”
“Yes. There may be some misunderstandings. I know that people are treated differently depending on the region. Some places prohibit slavery, while others, like here, are legal. If you feel uncomfortable with the idea of killing a few of the people who do not follow orders and educating them… … .”
Quilbian shook his head.
“I don’t really like people. I understand killing them if necessary. Like those last night.”
In some cases, the rulers of a country were elected by ordinary citizens.
But in some places, only noble blood could vote, and making political statements was punishable by death for commoners.
Still, it was okay in places where politics was led by the intelligentsia.
In some places, they would set fire to a duck’s tail and determine important national affairs based on how long the duck lived.
After experiencing all sorts of things, I’ve become able to accept most things.
People kill people and use fear as a tool for politics?
It was in a very good group.
“I feel much more at ease.”
I saw the strength leave Kuhad’s shoulders.
“Can I go and find out what’s going on?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“There is a very high probability that the results will be different from what I expected. I am not that great of a person. I may also return without getting anything.”
“Then we will have to find another way. But I believe that Master Quilbian will be able to solve this problem.”
“I wonder what the basis of your faith is.”
“It’s a feeling. My feeling is very accurate.”
“I have a good sense. I have a good sense too.”
“How about you, Quilbian? Do you think this matter will be resolved well?”
“hmm.”
Quilbian said, looking at the map.
“I guess I’ll have to see to know.”
“I will form an inspection team. When would be convenient?”
“We’ll leave in two days.”
“All right.”
Quilbian said as he stood up after finishing his coffee.
“Was the verification of me completed with those two yesterday?”
“yes.”
Kuhad answered firmly.
“I now fully understand what kind of person Kuhad is.”
“I think I finally understand what kind of person Mr. Quilbian is. I’ll try to be more relaxed in the future.”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Quilbian left after giving a greeting.
*
“Mr. Coco.”
“Please speak comfortably. The master has repeatedly emphasized that you are a very honored guest.”
“okay.”
Quillvian leaned back in his chair and looked at the books that filled the room.
“You must have a lot of money. The books are expensive.”
“I invest most of my salary here.”
“invest?”
“Yes. Even if a book loses its form, knowledge remains eternal. It is a product that does not lose its value, so it can be said to be a good investment.”
Even so, isn’t that too much?
I had a vague idea that if I sold all the books here, I could build a huge garden.
Elcoco’s voice was full of pride. He spoke while looking at his slightly raised chin.
“Do you know what a goblin is?”
“A goblin? The one from folk tales or fairy tales?”
“Yeah, that goblin.”
“I know, I know. Mysterious creatures.”
“Do you think it exists?”
“Not at all. No one has ever met a goblin.”
“Have you read any books or heard any rumors about goblins? Have you met someone or heard of someone returning from a strange place?”
“As far as I know, there has been no such thing.”
Quilbian changed the question.
“Dogma. Have you ever heard of it?”
“You know the dogmas. The demons that spread curses.”
“devil?”
“Yes. Oh, and by the way, there are a few groups that call Dogma Dokkaebi.”
Elcoco looked around the books stacked against the wall and then leaned down and said, “Ah.”
“Just a moment. I need to get this out.”
He was fidgeting while holding a brown book. Quilbian made a sign and moved his eyes.
“Oh, oh, oh!”
As the books rose, Elcoco stepped back, making a dumbfounded sound.
“Is this correct?”
Quilbian asked, holding a brown book in his hand.
“Yes, that’s right.”
The books that had been floating came back down. Elcoco said, blowing away the rising dust with his fan.
“How did you do it?”
“Just think of it as magic.”
“There is nothing in this world that is just like that.”
“Yes. Since you have it, finish explaining it.”
“……yes.”
He looked gloomy for a moment, but then his expression cleared and he spoke.
“There are several groups that hunt dogmas. They work so quietly that the general public doesn’t know about them. Some people even call them a group of fraudsters.”
“okay?”
Elcoco opened the brown book. His fingers flicked through the pages, then stopped.
There was a drawing. It was in the shape of a person, but it was completely painted black.
“This is dogma. It is a devil who hates people.”
Quilbian read the description. It was a common mythological story. A demon who hated humans escaped the hands of God and did something or other.
“I think I know the general origin of the name, but what about the group that hunts dogmas?”
“I only know of one place, ‘White Cart.’ As I said before, they work very quietly and their results are not visible, so there is little information about them. In fact, just knowing the name White Cart is quite something.”
Coco raised her chin again.
“If you can call it a group, that means there are quite a few people hunting for dogma, and if people move, it costs money. Who pays for the operating expenses? Do individuals earn money on their own? Do they volunteer to do things that are not socially recognized? Spending their own money?”
“… … Would you like me to find out for you?”
“No. From what I hear, you seem to lack confidence. There’s no need to waste time on something meaningless.”
If you ask Idril about the Dogma and the group that hunts it, you will get the answer. I tried to find out in advance for cross-checking, but he said there is no information that has spread to the public.
“Anything else, just tell me. I’ll find it for you.”
“Do you know where the dragon lives?”
“That, that is… … .”
“I don’t know, I guess.”
“… … Are you interested in a mysterious and slightly sad story about a sorcerer who can see the future? This is a story I’ve been saving.”
“No, it’s okay. I get really sick of seeing the future.”
“yes?”
“Don’t talk about that kind of thing, just talk about the world. Even the little things don’t matter.”
“Chit-chat is also my specialty!”
Elcoco continued speaking with a big smile.
*
Idril opened his eyes, clutching his pounding head.
It was bright outside the window.
I sat on the edge of the bed and stared blankly at the sky, then got up with a “Ah.”
I remembered.
I drank so much alcohol that I blurted out all sorts of things and then passed out.
I drank the water, licking my lips. As the dampness in my mouth was washed away, I came to my senses a little.
“Thank you for your help.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle. It’s a joy to meet someone you get along with.
As I was packing up my clothes and heading out, something suddenly occurred to me. Before I let go of my memory, I think I saw something burning brightly.
“You’re awake.”
The door opened and Quilbian’s face appeared.
“Oh, yes. I passed out after drinking so much for the first time in a while. Thank you for taking care of me.”
“I had a hard time so I had to drink. I’m really sorry about what happened yesterday.”
The words of apology brought to mind the gloves that had left for a place from which there was no return.
That’s right, it turned to dust.
I felt a little depressed, but I shook it off with a smile.
“I’ve met a good person, so what good is a glove?”
“You didn’t look too happy after saying that.”
“I’m a bit worried about getting hit by my senior. Oh, it would be nice if Mr. Quill could take the hit with me!”
“Yes, I do. I’ve decided to meet with you guys.”
“We promised. We’ll meet together.”
“That senior’s hands must be really spicy.”
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
I smiled happily and then looked down. A signal came from my stomach.
“… …Shall we go eat?”
“yes!”
I do not refuse any invitations.
Idril hummed and went out the door.
