The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 107

Episode 107
“You knew about the white wagon.”
Idril said, dipping his bread into the soup.
“I just found out. Is that where Mr. Idril works?”
“Yes, that’s right. The only group active around here is the White Cart. There are quite a few active members, so I know a few of them.”
Quilbian asked while drinking coffee.
“It would cost money to go around and hunt for dogmas.”
“Money is a big issue. Fortunately, we have been receiving donations. That has helped us solve many problems.”
“Donations?”
Idril’s eyes scanned the ceiling. It must mean that he was having trouble speaking.
“Where can I meet the White Wagon people? I want to meet them soon.”
“Don’t worry about that. I’ll show you around. They should be gathered near Rim Village by now.”
Idril lifted the bowl. It was like watching a magic trick as the food disappeared into his mouth.
“While we’re on the subject, should we leave right away?”
“That might be a bit difficult. I have something to take care of too.”
“What’s the matter? I’ll help you.”
“I was going to ask you anyway. Mr. Idril can’t be separated from me right now.”
“I can’t fall, what does that mean… … .”
Idril, whose words had been trailing off, smiled bitterly.
“It’s because of that damn murderer.”
“I have already told the lord. I will watch over you. Don’t worry, I will not detain you without a justifiable reason.”
“I got help again. Mr. Quill is really a nice guy.”
“Let’s say it’s a courtesy to the lost gloves.”
Idril laughed out loud at the word gloves.
“It’s a good thing that the gloves turned out like that. Now that you’ve become close with Mr. Quill, I’m sure everyone on our side will like Mr. Quill too.”
“I guarantee you that won’t be the case.”
“Why? You are such a nice person.”
Quilbian drank his coffee without replying.
They sell alcohol and food late into the night and open early in the morning to also sell coffee.
Quilbian liked the store called ‘Starlight’.
“Eat this.”
The waiter placed a small bowl on the table. It contained dried fruit.
“I never asked you to do it.”
“I brought it secretly as an apology.”
“Isn’t that strange?”
“Hey, just eat some.”
Idril tilted his head and then popped the dried fruit into his mouth.
“I don’t know what it is, but the service is always pleasant. Mr. Quill, try it too. It’s delicious.”
The employee nodded and turned around. He walked over to the customer who had just come in and said briskly, “Welcome.”
Quilbian explained the ‘request’ he mentioned after eating the dried fruit.
“Death of unknown cause. This stinks.”
“The smell of dogma?”
“Yes. We usually find our dogma through rumors. When something unfortunate happens that we cannot explain, rumors tend to spread.”
“Is there a dogma at the end of the rumor?”
Idril shook his head.
“No. Most of them are just really ‘bad luck’. But if you keep looking, you will come across some really vicious dogma, just like that dog.”
“It seems like this endless wandering life may continue.”
Rumors are the basis for action.
It was the height of inefficiency.
“That’s right. Hahaha! That’s okay. If you don’t find Dogma at the place you’ve heard rumors about, you’ll feel relieved. Ah! You’ll think, “It wasn’t because of that devil, it was just something that happened according to providence.”
“What should I say about Mr. Idril? He is really… … kind.”
The words, “How naive and stupid,” almost came out of my mouth.
“Oh, that look in your eyes just now.”
Idril smiled sinisterly. Of course, even with that kind of smile, people still look cheerful.
“I understand. Sometimes I find it funny that I live like this. And no one notices. Oh, sometimes I get caught up in dogma and get into trouble. That’s because the curse that dogma spreads is invisible to ordinary people.”
Idril began to describe the tens of thousands of injustices he had experienced.
Quilbian enjoyed his coffee and listened to the story.
It was easier to listen than to talk, and it suited my personality. Above all, Idril’s words were interesting and useful.
Because it is a valuable experience filled with information from all over the place.
“The cursed doll is running wild, but the child’s mother is trying to stop it from screaming!”
Idril, who had been speaking with a mix of hand gestures, took a deep breath and slumped his shoulders.
“Did we just talk about me too much?”
“Well, I guess I don’t have a feeling, but I like listening, so it doesn’t matter.”
“Mr. Quill is an angel.”
“Suddenly?”
“When I say things like this, my seniors tell me to shut up because they find it tiresome. They really are… … Of course, they are nice people.”
Idril glanced at the table. Quilbian followed suit.
The plentiful food was gone.
I was surprised again. When did you finish eating? Idril never stopped talking.
“Did I eat it all?”
“Yes. I ate it all by myself. I didn’t even touch it.”
“… … Would you like some more?”
“If you’re hungry, order more. I’ll pay.”
“No! That can’t be. I’m okay with it because I received a lot of activity expenses this time.”
Only after emptying three plates of food did Idril pat his stomach with a face full of satisfaction.
On the way out, I looked at the shop owner’s face, and I felt love in the way he was looking at Idril’s back.
“My seniors often told me that my body is not very efficient. I am on the large side, but I shouldn’t be eating this much, right?”
“I guess you were born with the temperament of a big eater. As long as you don’t get an upset stomach, it won’t be a big problem.”
“That’s right! Seniors lack that kind of understanding. When you meet them this time, Mr. Quill, please speak to them in a logical manner. When I stand in front of them, my mouth gets a little frozen.”
“I will try to defend you as best as I can.”
I walked down the street with Idril.
While we were walking, Idril began to tell us the second part of his experience. I paused for a moment as I listened.
“Why are you like that?”
“Oh, the flower caught my eye.”
An unknown flower was sprouting from a small drainage ditch by the side of the road.
Since the stones were laid in a lattice pattern, there would be no space for the flowers to take root, but strangely enough, the flowers were sprouting fragrant petals.
“It’s a small-winged lotus flower.”
“Small wing kite?”
Idril pointed to the petals.
“The petals are angled like a lotus. And when the wind blows, they flutter like the wings of a bird, which is why they are called that.”
“I learned something. But how did you learn that?”
“Ah! One of my seniors is really interested in plants. He’s a unique person.”
“There are so many people who call me senior.”
“There are many. There are also quite a few non-humans mixed in.”
Idril stopped in front of the inn.
“I’ll just wait inside quietly. I’m confident, but people might feel uneasy when they see my face.”
“Only the security guards know the killer’s face, so the general public probably doesn’t know it.”
“But you never know. If you faint after seeing me, it would be a big problem, so I’ll stay still until we leave.”
“Okay. I’ll see you then, I’m leaving for the colony in two days.”
“yes.”
Idril waved his hand, saying, “See you later.” Quilbian also raised his hand slightly.
It was time to think about whether I should go back to Elcoco again.
I made eye contact with a guard who was looking around from afar. He was one of the guards who had gone out to arrest Idril yesterday.
The guard ran and stood in front.
“I was really rude yesterday.”
“That can happen when you work. More importantly, why… … .”
“The Lord Soyoung asked me to bring him here.”
I headed to the castle with the guards.
Rookie, who was standing on the bridge crossing the moat, approached me with a smile.
The guard saluted and turned around.
“Lord Quilbian.”
“What brings you here? If you’re an inspection team, you should be leaving in two days.”
Instead of answering, Rookie handed over an envelope.
“What is this?”
“Thank you for your favor.”
“By any chance, the Barara tribe… … .”
The rookie nodded.
“It was worth the trip in the middle of the night to contact him. He offered to make time for me. He’s not usually a hard person to meet, but when I told him about Mr. Quilbian, he seemed interested.”
“That’s good news. If I take this, will I be able to meet him?”
I gently tore open the sealing wax and looked inside the envelope. There was a handful of stiff black hairs inside.
“hair?”
“It is his. You can see it as a token of promise.”
“Oh, yes.”
I’ve already packed it up.
“I want to meet you as soon as possible.”
“You can go there right away. Once he sits down, he rarely gets up. He just got back from an outside schedule, so he’ll be staying there for a while.”
Elcoco, who was behind Rookie, took a step to the side while smiling. Oh, there he was. His presence was faint, so I just noticed it now.
“El will guide you. The residence is about a four-hour ride away, so if you leave now, you can arrive before the sun sets.”
Loki continued with an apologetic look on his face.
“I wanted to be your guide, but something came up that I couldn’t do. If you go tomorrow, I’ll be your guide.”
“No, that’s fine. I just need to know the location, so I’ll go with Coco.”
“Thank you for your understanding.”
Elcoco ran off somewhere and brought two horses. He looked up at the horses that were trudging along and opened his mouth.
“I’ll run, so you ride.”
Coco grabbed the reins without saying much, as if she had heard the story beforehand. The remaining horse was dragged away by the servant.
“Take care on your way back.”
We left the village, escorted by Rookie. As soon as we left the village, Coco mounted her horse and vigorously pulled the reins.
“Yay!”
I thought he was a kid who only looked at books and had no athletic ability, but he was quite good at talking.
Quilbian picked up his pace and galloped alongside Elcoco’s horse.
“Wow! It really was.”
“You didn’t believe what Rookie said.”
“How can you believe it? A person can run at the same speed as a person, and for hours at a time. Well, it’s not that surprising, since I saw him use mysterious magic.”
Quilbian pushed up his glasses and looked at Elcoco, who was smiling brightly.
“You look like you’re having fun.”
“Yes! It’s been a long time since I last rode a horse. I don’t like walking, but I like riding a horse. It’s just that I don’t have the chance to ride often.”
“How about saving some of the money you would have spent on books and buying a horse instead? It looks like you’re getting paid quite a lot.”
“No! How can I give up books?”
Quillvian smiled and shrugged.
He was a kid with strong tastes.
“You know!”
Perhaps because of the sound of horse hooves, Elcoco spoke loudly, almost as if screaming.
“why?”
“Can you teach me some magic? I really want to learn that magic to organize books.”
“You can teach, but you can’t learn.”
“Is it because of the imaginary world?”
“No. That’s because it’s something a normal human being can’t learn.”
“Then can I learn if I’m not healthy!?”
“You could say that.”
“Then please tell me how to become normal! Organizing books is so hard!”
“Then try living alone for about 100 years.”
“yes?”
“Try living alone for about 100 years.”
“How can a person live for 100 years? And alone!”
“So you said no. Okay?”
“… …Quilvian has a bad personality.”
Elcoco spoke very quietly, with her lips quivering. She seemed to think that no one would hear her.
“Yeah, you’re a good person.”
“Hey, did you hear that?”
“Because you have good ears.”
“sorry!”
“Apples are fast.”
“Are you going to tell the lord? Am I going to get in big trouble? Ugh, I don’t like that!”
“Don’t talk. It’s annoying.”
An unpredictable, bookish person.
Kuhad was not the type of person to keep useless things by his side. He may look clumsy, but he clearly has talent, so he was kept by his side and given to me.
Is this acting to look natural?
Quilbian chuckled and dismissed the thought.
It was a good thing. You give what you need and get what you need. As long as the deal was done correctly, the rest could be laughed off.
“Lord Quilbian!”
The sun was rising above the mountain peak when Elcoco shouted.
“That’s the place!”
In the distance, I could see a house standing out of place next to a path.
