I boarded a plane to America with Dimon.

내가 급히 미국으로 온 또 하나의 이유기도 했다.
페이팔은 2002년에 이베이에 매각이 된다.
그러니 매각이 되기 전에 내가 낚아채기 위해 급히 미국으로 와야만 했다.
“지금이야 적자가 누적되고 있지만, IT 기술이 발전하면 할수록 페이팔의 매출은 늘어나게 되어 있어요. 그리고 페이팔을 통해 많은 예금도 확보할 수 있죠.”
“실탄 확보를 위해서라도 페이팔이 꼭 필요하다는 말씀이시군요.”
“나머지 이야기는 창업자들을 만나서 이야기를 나눠 보죠. 핀테크 은행 본사가 자리할 건물 구경도 하고요.
우리는 실리콘 밸리로 이동했다.
우리가 한국에 있는 동안 데이비드가 실리콘 밸리 중앙에 위치한 건물을 핀테크 은행의 본사로 사용하기 위해 인수를 해 두었다.
“데이비드가 돈을 많이 들였나 보네요. 신생 은행이 시작하기엔 규모가 꽤 크네요.”
“위치도 좋고, 건물 규모도 제 마음에 쏙 듭니다. 이런 건물을 어떻게 구했는지 데이비드에게 물어보고 싶은 심정입니다.”
“데이비드의 인맥은 부동산 시장에도 쫙 깔려 있죠.”
예쁜 건물이었지만 오래 구경할 수는 없었다.
건물을 은행으로 사용하기 위해 개조 작업이 한창이었고, 책상을 비롯한 사무실 용품을 옮기느라 먼지가 풀풀 날리고 있었다.
“약속 시간이 다 되었네요. 같이 가시죠. 데이비드가 어렵게 미팅 일정을 잡았는데 늦어서는 안 되죠.”
“제가 직접 모시겠습니다.”
페이팔이 소유하고 있는 건물은 멀지 않았다.
같은 실리콘 밸리 안에 있었기에 차를 타고 1시간가량 이동하니 도착을 했다.
차에서 내리자 반가운 얼굴이 손을 흔들며 우리를 반겼다.
“보스! 여기로 오시면 됩니다!”
“표정을 보니 이야기가 잘 진행되고 있나 보군요.”
“우리가 페이팔을 인수하겠다고 하자 반기는 분위기였습니다. 그런데 이베이에서 벌써 인수 의사를 밝혔다고 합니다.”
“경쟁자가 있어야 싸우는 재미가 있죠. 어서 들어갑시다.”
거칠 것 없이 페이팔 건물 안으로 들어갔다.
그도 그럴 것이 왼쪽에는 데이비드가 오른쪽에는 다이먼이 나를 호위하듯 걷고 있었다.
이들과 함께하는데 무엇이 두렵겠는가?
“반갑습니다. 이렇게 저를 환영해 주셔서 감사합니다.”
회의실에 들어가자 페이팔 창업자들이 모여 있었다.
그들의 얼굴은 처음 보는 것이었지만, 저들을 가리키는 단어는 아주 많이 들어 보았다.
페이팔 마피아.
페이팔을 매각한 이들은 다양한 분야에서 창업에 성공했고.
스타트업에서 지대한 영향력을 행사했기에 페이팔 마피아라는 단어로 이들을 불렀다.
“페이팔에 관심을 가져 주셔서 감사합니다. 페이팔 CEO를 맡고 있는 피터 틸입니다.”
“컨피니티의 대표였던 분이시군요. 이야기는 많이 전해 들었습니다.”
페이팔은 두 개의 기업이 합병해 만들어진 회사였고.
그 회사 중 하나인 컨피니티의 대표였던 사람이 피터 틸이었다.
내가 이름을 기억하고 있을 정도로 뛰어난 사람이었고, 미래에는 헤지펀드, 빅데이터 분석 회사 대표로 이름을 날리게 되는 사람이었다.
“제 이름을 아신다니 영광입니다. 월가에서 소문이 자자한 SAVE 투자회사의 대표를 이렇게 뵙게 되어 영광입니다.”
“그런데 페이팔의 CEO가 바뀌었나 보군요.”
“작은 오해가 있어 잠시 CEO 자리에서 물러나 있습니다.”
“그렇군요. 다른 분들과도 인사를 나눠도 될까요?”
“제가 소개해 드리겠습니다. 페이팔 공동 창업자인 채드 헐리와 스티브 천입니다.”
“정말 반갑습니다. 꼭 만나 뵙고 싶었습니다.”
나는 과할 정도의 미소를 지으며 그들의 손을 잡았다.
이러는 이유가 있었다.
채드 헐리와 스티브 천은 페이팔을 매각한 자금으로 유튜브를 만들 사람들이기 때문이었다.

이들과 인연을 만드는 데 어찌 소홀히 하겠는가?
“인사는 여기까지 하고, 회사 인수 이야기로 넘어갔으면 합니다.”
“이베이에서도 관심을 가지고 있다는 이야기는 들었습니다. 이렇게 좋은 회사를 놓칠 수는 없죠. 20억 달러에 모든 지분을 인수하겠습니다.”
“잠시 저희끼리 이야기를 나눠 봐도 되겠습니까?”
“당연히 그러셔야죠. 우리는 옆에서 커피를 마시고 있겠습니다.”
데이비드와 다이먼과 함께 옆 회의실로 이동했다.
방음이 좋지 않은지 수군거리는 음성이 들려왔지만, 애써 모른 척을 하며 커피를 홀짝였다.
“보스! 가격을 너무 과하게 부른 것 같아요. 이베이에서 아무리 많이 써도 15억 달러 정도밖에 안 될 겁니다. 그런데 5억 달러나 더 부르셨어요.”
“5억 달러로 저들의 마음을 살 수 있다면 절대 과한 금액이 아니죠.”
“그 정도 가치가 있는 사람들입니까? 물론 페이팔을 창업한 사람들이니 뛰어난 능력을 보유한 건 맞지만, 5억 달러는 로비자금으로 사용하면 수십 명의 정치인을 우리 사람으로 만들 수 있는 금액입니다.”
데이비드가 장난기를 쫙 빼고 말했다.
너무 쉽게 5억 달러를 사용한 점을 꼬집고 있는 그였다.
하긴 5억 달러면 6천억 원이 훌쩍 넘는 금액이었다.
웬만한 기업을 인수하고도 남을 돈을 그저 인맥 형성을 위해 사용한다고 하니 좋은 말이 나올 수가 없었다.
“제가 언제 실패하는 투자를 한 적이 있나요? 5억 달러를 투자해서 500억 달러로 만들 자신이 있어요. 정치인을 내 편으로 만든다고 해서 500억 달러를 벌 수는 없잖아요.”
“……보스는 다 계획이 있으셨군요. 투자의 귀재 앞에서 제가 헛소리를 했네요.”
다시금 장난기를 되찾는 데이비드였다.
이렇게 대화를 나누는 동안 페이팔 창업자들의 회의가 끝이 났고, 우린 다시 회의실로 돌아가 인수 협상을 재개했다.
“제안을 받아들이겠습니다. 20억 달러에 페이팔을 매각하겠습니다.”
“아! 그리고 또 하나 제안드릴 사안이 있습니다.”
“추가 조건이 있는 겁니까? 이런 식으로 협상을 진행하시면 곤란합니다.”
“페이팔 인수와는 관련 없는 제안입니다. 여러분들에게 아주 좋은 제안이기도 하죠.”
살짝 심기가 상한 페이팔 창업자들이었다.
그럴 만도 한 게 협상이 끝나가는데 갑자기 추가 제안을 내걸었으니 당연한 반응이었다.
