The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 2

Episode 2
“Quil, where are you going?”
“It’s hot. I’ll go out for a bit. Tell Drich the rest.”
I left the classroom full of people. I closed the door and leaned against the wall to catch my breath.
“Drich! Did the Seer really recognize you?”
“Are you lying? Are you really the Seer?”
The children’s voices were heard through the door. The barrage of questions will continue until tomorrow. Seeing the visionary up close is a special event.
Quilbian covered his cheek with his hand. His excitement wouldn’t subside. His heart was pounding all day long, making it hard to stay still.
The seer recognizes us.
I went outside, touching the corners of my lips that were twitching. I saw other children running around. I exchanged greetings with a few people whose faces I recognized.
“I heard you met the seer. That sounds great.”
“Tell me what happened later!”
The children of Seongsiljip, who were moving to the learning center, spoke to me and then disappeared. My shoulders shrugged on their own.
Quilbian sat on the white bench in front of the house and looked up at the sky. The clear blue sky looked like the face of a visionary.
When will we meet again?
Quill turned his gaze to the sound of laughter coming from afar. He saw a black monk’s robe with silver embroidery.
All the children playing in the vacant lot in front of the house turned their gaze to the person in the black monk’s robe.
Everyone was looking on with envy and jealousy. Quill was no exception.
The black habit was only worn by special children who had been taught by a seer.
Children who will receive the ‘Food of Awakening’ rather than the ‘Food of Change’.
It’s just a rumor, but it’s said that the Sun also gained a beautiful body through the awakening ceremony.
It’s just a rumor, so it’s not certain.
Special children have disappeared from sight.
If I follow those kids, will I be able to meet the visionary again?
I became greedy, but I didn’t act on it.
Love, friendship, sincerity, gratitude.
Students in your dormitory were only allowed to operate in designated areas. You wouldn’t get in big trouble for leaving, but you would lose points.
1 point is precious, but it costs 20 penalty points.
Quilbian thought of the black monk’s robe.
If you study steadily and faithfully, one day you will be able to wear the monk’s robe like those children.
Quill was confident.
If even the seers remember it, then the possibility is very high. As Drich said, one day, you might become like the sun… … .
The pleasant fantasy was interrupted in the middle.
Quill squinted and looked to his right.
I saw a girl with a tired face, wiping her hair. It was a show-off wiping that didn’t show sincerity.
“Try to move your feet.”
The girl came over and said. Quill didn’t hide his displeasure.
“You shouldn’t be so careless when you can’t even move the broom with a pious heart.”
“Okay, then put your feet up.”
Quill stepped aside so he could clean under the bench.
“I told you to just lift your legs.”
“You have to do it with the feeling of cleaning up every nook and cranny and getting rid of all the dirty things.”
The girl stopped dead in her tracks. Then she raised her finger and pointed to the floor.
“What do you think?”
“what?”
“Here it is. Does it look dirty?”
It’s dirty.
Quill shook his head.
“Right? It’s clean? It’s strangely clean. There’s no dust. But it needs to be cleaned. I don’t understand that. You clean when it’s dirty. But here… … .”
The girl spoke as if she was being treated unfairly, then shut her mouth tightly.
“No, I don’t think I heard that.”
It was when the girl bent down and pushed the broom under the bench. Ouch, she said, squinting her eyes.
Quill looked at the bruises that had formed on the girl’s arms and the nape of her neck.
“Why are you saying such strange things?”
A child who said strange things like the sun looked like a spider and was disgusting.
That was the girl in front of me.
“Yeah, it was my fault. I shouldn’t have said that.”
The girl concluded her speech by saying that she was deeply reflecting, but her eyes showed otherwise.
“Have you consulted the ascetic?”
As soon as Quill got out of bed, the girl looked around in surprise.
“Are you going to do this?”
“what?”
“Are you going to do what I just said?”
“If you keep having negative thoughts, it is right to seek counseling. We have all been taught that. Ascetics, they will understand and understand your mind and then put you on the right path… … .”
“Everything is really okay. It’s true. I said bad things about the sun because I was not educated enough. Trust me. So just ignore what I said. I’ll clean up a lot too. Look!”
The girl squinted and bent down. She thrust the broom under the bench as if she was going to crawl under it and swept it vigorously.
Any other time, I would have laughed in satisfaction at the sight. I certainly would have.
But something strange happened.
My first thought was that I felt sorry.
Why are you sad?
Cleaning for learning is the right thing to do. The right thing to do must be done, even if it is painful.
Besides, the girl was reflecting. Although she seemed to have some evil thoughts left, she would correct them if she continued to learn.
That must be the case.
“Give it to me.”
He said, holding out his hand. The girl looked up blankly.
“Give me a broom. You can’t do that.”
“No. I’ll do it.”
“I won’t tell the ascetics. Just tell them that you did all the cleaning. That’s why.”
He snatched the broom.
I should have left it alone, that would have been the right thing to do, but my hands and mouth moved on their own.
Something felt strange to me today.
Is it because I met the visionary?
If so, it might be a positive change.
“Get out of the way. Cleaning should be done like this, with the feeling of pushing away all the unclean things.”
He lowered his posture and bowed.
The most important thing taught in the school was cleaning. Quill thought he was better at cleaning than anyone else.
The unclean things that are still on the floor… … .
Quillvien’s hand stopped.
It’s a clean floor. Shiny, glossy white stone. Pure white stone that doesn’t forgive dirt.
Suddenly this thought occurred to me.
Why do I have to clean when there’s no dust? It’s so annoying.
In an instant, a chill ran down the back of my neck. Goosebumps appeared and I threw down the broom I was holding.
“What, what is it? Why?”
The girl asked back in surprise.
“… … You do it.”
“what?”
“Finish it! I’m going to go.”
No, no.
This is a bad idea. It is a thought that should not be done. It was definitely the ‘evil’ thought that the ascetics in the learning center had talked about so many times.
My hands grew cold.
It was clear that something was wrong with the immature shell that had not learned much.
In times like these, you should seek advice from an ascetic.
I had to confess all the evil thoughts that had bloomed in my head in order to protect the learning I had accumulated.
I ran. I opened the door to the friendship house as if I was breaking it open and went in.
The children on the first floor playground discovered Quilbian and gathered around him.
“Quil, Quill! What did the seer say?”
“Drich told me to ask you too.”
“Who was the visionary? Was he the one who came last time?”
It was a moment when he should have been excited and explained, but Quill had to keep his mouth shut.
“I’ll tell you later, later.”
“Quil? What’s wrong?”
“No, nothing.”
I had to hide the fact that evil thoughts were blooming in my head as much as possible. No matter what anyone says, I’m the best student in the friendship group. I don’t want to show my weak side to the kids.
I gathered my courage and went up to the third floor.
I can see the office. There must be an ascetic inside.
I took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
“Quil. What’s going on?”
Altera, one of the three ascetics who manage the Friendship House.
Quilbian thought it was fortunate. He usually talked about various things, so he was more comfortable than other ascetics.
“excuse me…….”
“Haha, I guess there’s something else I don’t know. Quill’s thirst for knowledge is truly amazing.”
“that is…….”
“I just finished praying, so I have plenty of time. Feel free to ask questions. I will answer to the best of my knowledge.”
It was a pair of eyes that made my heart feel at ease just by looking at them.
However, contrary to my heart, my lips did not move. It was strange. I was shouting loudly from some unknown place, not from my head.
Never tell the truth, he said.
So the quill.
“I want to get a better broom. I need to clean more thoroughly.”
It was the first time I lied to an ascetic.
Altera smiled.
“I really feel the depth of learning. I wish all children were like Quill.”
A large hand was placed on my head. A hand that was stroking me gently. If it were any other time, I would have felt better.
Quilbian lowered his head as much as possible.
Because I felt nauseous.
“Let’s go and see!”
“You might fall, go slowly.”
I came down the stairs while hearing a warm farewell. I couldn’t raise my head while coming down. What kind of expression was I making right now?
I ran to the first floor entrance. I stood in front of the full-length mirror used to check my attire.
The child reflected in the mirror had a face that looked like it was about to cry at any moment.
*
“Will you be okay eating that?”
Drich sat down next to her, laughing hysterically. Quill smiled weakly and looked at his plate.
There were dark, shaggy things on top of the pure white bowl.
Food? It’s the food I’ve been eating, right?
I put my nose up to it and sniffed it. A strong smell hit me. If I hadn’t braced myself, I would have shuddered and thrown the bowl on the floor.
“I can’t stand this smell. I think about it even when I’m sleeping. I want to keep eating it even in my dreams.”
Drich pushed the bowl in.
“Now! A cool guy shares even a single bean. Do you like that?”
He smiled cheerfully and scooped up food with his spoon, pouring it into Quillian’s bowl.
If it were yesterday, no, even this morning, I would have been amazed by the warm friendship.
but.
“What? Are you so touched that you can’t speak? I didn’t know you could like it this much.”
Drich said, putting something black in his mouth. A foul smell was wafting out.
Quilbian looked around.
The children smiled brightly and ate the black stuff with spoons. It was a quiet dining space without any squeaking or clinking of utensils.
“Quil? Where does it hurt?”
Drich asked.
My mind suddenly snapped. I instinctively picked up the spoon and looked across at it.
The ascetics are visible. Altera is looking this way. When their eyes meet, she smiles.
Quill grinned and stuffed something black into his mouth. His stomach contracted and he tried to vomit out what he had put in his mouth, but he held back and swallowed it.
Tears well up in my eyes.
“Is it so delicious that I cry?”
“Oh, it’s so delicious. How can it be so delicious?”
Quill suppressed the feeling of nausea and slurped his food into his mouth. When Drich said he would give him more, he almost punched him, but barely managed to hold it back.
He stood up holding the cleaned bowl.
As I was walking to the dish return area, Altera spoke to me.
“Quil, did you enjoy your meal?”
“Yes! It was so delicious that I ate it cleanly.”
He showed off the cleaned dishes.
I felt like this was the way to do it.
Altera’s smile deepened.
“That’s the right thing to do. Oh, and I’ve prepared the broom, so you can get it tomorrow.”
“thank you!”
After answering brightly, he turned around.
My face fell as I left the restaurant and was alone. I bent over and clutched my stomach.
I clenched my teeth because I thought I shouldn’t vomit. How long did I do that?
“you…….”
A voice I didn’t want to hear came from ahead of me.
It was that girl.
