The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 25
Only Krnovel
Episode 25
Silence fell.
Quilbian didn’t complain. When things are sorted out, Altera will be the first to speak.
While I was waiting, I recalled memories of my life outside.
The more I thought about it, the more things came to mind.
Not just the pig farms, but also the damp lodgings, the noisy bars, and the shopping streets where it was nice to lose yourself.
Along with the space, various incidents that occurred there were also dragged out one after another.
A life where I spent more time complaining than time smiling and relaxing.
“It’s similarly difficult to live here or there.”
“It’s like that everywhere people live.”
“Goblin is the mainstream here.”
“The same goes for goblins. They are a bundle of desires.”
Altera raised her head slightly.
“Quil.”
“yes.”
“How do you believe in yourself?”
“Why? Can’t you even trust yourself anymore, ascetic?”
“Fortunately, I’m not stupid. My suspicions started when I heard Twella’s words, but they were amplified by your words, and now I’m sure. My memories were implanted by someone. That’s why they’re missing.”
“You’re not just out of your mind, are you?”
“If that’s the case, I feel better. My thoughts are logical. They are consistent. But the fragments of my memories don’t connect. I think I’ve been brainwashed. It’s all just a half-assed solution that’s why I’m in this situation.”
Quilbian straightened his upper body. He scratched his head and looked at Altera, who was lying down.
“Let’s decide.”
“What do you mean? What?”
“Something certain. No matter what happens, you have to follow this, you can trust it, you have to rely on it. That kind of stuff.”
Shit, Altera laughed and got up.
“You and I think alike.”
“That’s good. I’m not good at persuading people.”
“Before I get started, let me ask you again. How can you be sure that your memories haven’t been tampered with?”
Quillvin rubbed his nose.
“It’s simple. That horrible smell can’t be fake. Do you know what a pigsty smells like?”
“I think I know, but I also think I don’t know.”
“It’s really bad. Oh, it’s a little better than a shit bucket. Human feces are the most toxic.”
“I don’t even want to refute it because it’s so absurd.”
Quillbian stretched out his legs.
“Just kidding. My condition is not important, right? If you hadn’t discovered me, I would have just become prey. But you are different. A human with goblins. How you tricked them, why they accepted you, and if you were brainwashed, who was the one who led the way. Each and every one of them is important.”
“I was the one in control and you were the one feeding me, so you don’t have to doubt yourself?”
“That’s right. As the ascetic has said many times, supporting actors are this and that. If we follow that logic, I’m the supporting actor in the outskirts, not even worth discussing the truth of my memories.”
“That sounds plausible. With that clever mind, why did you end up working in a pigsty?”
“Are you really asking because you don’t know?”
“No, I know. ‘If you’re born in a castle, you live in a castle. If you’re born in a mansion, you live in a mansion.’”
It was a sound I had heard countless times.
Quilbian continued Altera’s words.
“‘If you’re born in poverty, you’ll die in poverty. So don’t dream big and work like a dog.’ That’s what I heard over and over again. My boss used to sing that phrase all the time.”
“Were you born in a poor village?”
“How does it look? Doesn’t it look a bit guilty?”
“You look friendly with dirt.”
“You speak so beautifully. Okay, let’s decide quickly. Are you going to hang yourself with that fate or something?”
“Yes. That’s all I can rely on now. I can’t rely on myself, so I have no choice but to rely on fate and Twella.”
He crossed his arms and sat lost in thought.
You have to work with a guy who has declared that he doesn’t trust himself. It’s a tricky situation. But what can you do?
Altera was the only one who held the ecological and legal knowledge of this place.
So nothing has changed.
“Let’s proceed as planned. I’ll learn the magic, and you, the ascetic, will move after that damned fate. Okay?”
“Drih?”
“You have to include him too. You know that right? Once he comes to his senses, there’s no going back. Do you think the other guys look like crazy to Drihi? No, they are crazy. I didn’t even say to kill him, but he took the initiative and trampled someone to death.”
“You were one of those kids.”
“I know. So I have to get out of here before I get any more crazy. My goal is clear. I’m going out with Twella. So I’ll trust Twella’s actions. It’s a little different from yours, ascetic, but the result is the same.”
Quilbian reached out his hand towards Altera.
“You’ve been brainwashed so much that you don’t even know what you want to do or what you should do?”
“For now.”
“Then help me. That will help Twella.”
“You’re getting more and more cocky.”
“Please say that I have big ambitions. Please understand that I have become like this because I have been beaten so many times.”
“The owner might not have hit you for nothing. It’s because you’re so shameless… … .”
“I’ve heard that a lot, too.”
Altera grabbed his hand.
“Come with Drich tomorrow. I’ll explain the basics of magic again.”
“All right.”
Quilbian opened the door and then stopped.
“Oh, and when we’re alone, I’ll call you teacher.”
“Do whatever you want. Whether you are a teacher or an ascetic is not important.”
“Okay. Then think about it. Who am I, where did I come from, why am I here?”
“Go away. I need to calm my mind while I sleep.”
“Yes, sleep well. Dream about me.”
It was Altera, waving her hands.
Quilbian quietly closed the door and turned around. When he returned to the room, Drich was sitting there waiting nervously.
“If you do that, you’ll get in trouble.”
“I met some kids on my way here, and none of them were normal.”
I stared blankly without responding. Drich made a puzzled expression.
“I know, I was like that until yesterday too.”
“I never said anything.”
“What are you talking about after swearing with your eyes?”
“I’ve never cursed.”
I sat down on the bed.
From now on, it was important. I told Drich what he had to keep in mind. He had to act as usual, not step forward, and not be surprised when he saw the goblin’s true form.
“What does that goblin look like… … .”
“They look so disgusting that it’s almost creepy. They look strangely human, but they’re not human. There are also ones that look like blown-up bread, but they don’t look human, so they’re okay.”
“If I learn that magic, will I be able to see it too?”
“That’s right. Even if you don’t want to see it, you’ll see it.”
Drich went to the window. The long-limbed sun was lowering itself toward the west.
“You’re saying that I looked up to him and said he was a great sun?”
“I’ve done it countless times.”
“That’s crazy, it’s so disgusting.”
Drich turned around abruptly.
“Twella, he couldn’t possibly be… … .”
“That’s right. She knows everything too.”
“Wait a minute, wait a minute.”
It was Drich who was approaching with urgent steps.
“He just went west, right? Following the seer.”
“Yes. Because I received the black habit.”
“Are you okay? The atmosphere there seems much more dangerous than here.”
“It’ll be dangerous. That’s why I’m worried.”
Since we’re on the subject, I also told him about Twella’s condition and fate.
Drich, who had been listening silently, let out a muffled groan.
“why?”
“I believe in fatalism.”
“What the heck.”
“There’s no need to be angry. When you study history, there are always historical figures that pop up. People who are so important that if it weren’t for them, history would change.”
“Have you never heard the saying that when the world is in chaos, even a beggar becomes a general? That’s just how it is.”
“That original is a great destiny. It is a path that people like us can never realize.”
“You’re really annoying. You’re thinking exactly the same thing as me, teacher.”
“teacher?”
He raised his finger and pointed upward. Drich nodded and said, “Aha.”
“The ascetic is your teacher.”
“Because that’s the easiest title to use. Anyway, you too learn magic. And punch that beggarly fate in the side.”
“It’s all the power of fate that I, who am close to you, have opened my eyes, and that you, who are close to Twella, have awakened. I understand. Yes, Twella is truly a man of the times.”
Quillbian raised five fingers and struck Drich hard in the face. Drich groaned and covered his face.
“This is the era, and we just need to focus on getting out of here with Twella.”
“Twella foresaw everything that would happen in the future? Didn’t she tell you anything?”
Quilbian shook his head.
“at all.”
“The ascetic… … No, what about you, teacher? Didn’t you hear anything?”
“All I heard was to doubt myself. I didn’t even open my mouth about what would happen or anything like that.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. How can I know what’s on his mind? So I have to meet him and ask him. What on earth was he thinking when he hugged me by himself? Why do I feel so bad?”
As I talked, I became more and more angry.
You forgot your promise to be together and went into the middle of enemy territory alone.
Even if your magical abilities are like heaven and earth, it would be helpful to have someone by your side.
“Do you like him?”
Drich stared at him intently and asked.
“Then you would hate it?”
“That’s true too.”
Quilbian clapped his hands.
“There’s nothing complicated about it. Learn magic, gain strength, defeat goblins, and escape. Simple, right?”
“It’s simple, that’s good. But you know… … .”
“huh?”
“You know how to get out of here, right? What was it called? The double-sided realm?”
“Oh, the front and back area.”
“What the heck is that? Where is it?”
“I don’t know. I only heard the name from the teacher. The world of goblins, the realm of the two-faced. That’s all I know. And this isn’t the area we know. You’ve never heard of a sky blocked by a wall, right?”
“I suddenly feel suffocated.”
Drich lay down on the bed.
“When you feel suffocated, you should sleep. I’m already sleepy. I couldn’t even catch a wink of sleep last night… … .”
Drich, who had been mumbling, suddenly started snoring.
“Sleeping well is a blessing and an ability.”
As I was watching with a smile, Drich flinched and kicked the blanket away. Was he having a nightmare?
After spreading out the blanket and covering myself, I laid my head on the pillow.
I closed my eyes and shortly afterwards I had a dream.
In my dream, I was running around happily with pigs. Drich was also next to me. Altera was smiling brightly and was roasting pork.
Some pigs jumped on both feet and did a funny dance.
A quiet plain.
But Twella was nowhere to be seen.
*
“The law is great.”
These were the words Drich left after eating the delicious black porridge.
“You’re going to learn that great magic from now on, so wake up. If you’re Buten, you must have studied, right?”
“I did.”
“I will learn well.”
I went to see Altera during my break.
He waited inside and pointed to the floor with his finger.
“I don’t have time, so let’s start with this first.”
Two pieces of paper came flying in, fluttering.
“Before learning magic, let’s learn about the enemy first.”
What is a goblin?
The sharp handwriting of Altera caught my eye.
