The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 29

Episode 29
“Why? Do you have work left to do?”
A goblin in the shape of a snake stopped and asked. Altera shook her head.
“No, it’s okay. I’ll take care of it.”
The snake flicked its tongue, then laid its belly back on the ground and slithered forward.
Altera looked at the distant living quarters.
Quilbian, Drich.
If they are the supporting characters that fate has given them, they will survive. If not, they will die.
A feeling of regret and sorrow touched my brain, but it only lasted for a moment.
When does anyone worry and care about whom?
As time went by, the hypothesis was turning into fact. The contradictions and flaws in the memory were now scary to look at.
Who the hell am I?
No, what is it before who is it?
A poor human who has been taught ideology by a goblin. Or a goblin who is mistaken for a human.
Or else… … .
I turned my head at the movement of Nak that I could feel from afar. Children wearing black monk’s robes were gathered together and forming a seal.
The swirling nacs tangled together in an instant, forming the shape of a giant lion.
The natural mana reacted. Thorns sprouted from the lion’s body and swept away the surrounding area.
“These are delicious ingredients.”
The snake spoke while looking at the children practicing magic.
“I want to eat it, but it will kill me if I eat it, so I have to hold back for now.”
“I guess I’ll have to endure this for the rest of my life.”
Altera said dryly.
“If I continue to receive Hyo-dan’s grace, one day my magical power will be greater than Hyo-dan’s. Then I will eat Hyo-dan and take control of those children.”
“Your dream is big.”
“dream?”
“There is something like that.”
I walked away, leaving behind the sound of banging on the ground.
I could see the special pens in the distance.
I heard that unlike the general pens in the east, the special pens don’t have a set routine other than training.
That’s why the cadets were also freely roaming the grounds.
Even the strong brainwashing has been somewhat released. The cadets here are probably living with a ‘certain degree’ of freedom.
“That doesn’t look good.”
Altera pointed to the cadet who was muttering incessantly while banging his head against a tree.
“It’s a material with a corrupted image. It became like that because the memories were tangled. It’s also the price of breaking the gold to ensure the quality of the material.”
“Wouldn’t it be difficult if there were too many materials like that?”
“It’s okay since Hyo-dan is taking care of it. If it gets damaged beyond repair, send it to the management office, detonate the Nak, and then consume it.”
As soon as the snake finished speaking, a yellow goblin approached the student.
“Ahhhh! Let go of me! Guys, wake up! This place is weird. We have to get out of here! No, no. That’s not it, I… … I… … .”
He was a child who cried and then laughed.
The other cadets looked at the crazy child with displeasure.
He asked while looking at the child being dragged by the goblin’s hand.
“The other materials must have been pretty brainwashed as well. It’s interesting that they turn a blind eye to this situation.”
“They believe they are special. That’s why they welcome the disappearance of inferior species. Human nature is truly ugly.”
“You didn’t lead it to become like that?”
The snake’s eyes, split vertically, turned towards Altera.
“What’s the big deal? The point is that it’s well-maintained under Hyo-dan-nim’s rule. That’s why I’m jealous of Hyo-dan-nim’s vision. If we use it well, we can manage the humans who have fallen here more efficiently.”
It was a snake that took the lead and told people to follow.
It was a truly peaceful place, except for one person being dragged away unconscious. The garden was filled with laughter and the sound of popping pops.
Looking at that scenery, Altera let out a deep breath.
I guess I’m closer to a goblin than a human.
I feel no emotion when I see children dying or when I see students being played by goblins.
Rather, it just makes you feel lethargic.
The only time my hazy mind lit up was when I saw Twella.
Only that child is the truth, and only that child can bring the answers.
A child who will clear away the fog of ignorance and make everything clear.
“You can live here. And here are your materials.”
Kkukkuk.
Altera grabbed the snake’s body with her left hand. As she tightened her grip, the snake screamed.
“What are you doing! Let go, let go!”
The body of the captured snake slowly began to grow larger. The Nak was clearly visible swirling around.
Altera wrapped her right hand around the snake’s head, which had become as big as a fist.
“texture.”
Hurrruk!
The flames flowed from his palm and entered the snake’s snout.
There was no noise. The snake writhened and burned black, soon turning to ash.
He wiped the ashes off his hands and turned around.
There was Twella behind.
Can we call this person, no, this being, Twella?
The appearance is the same, but the contents are unrecognizable. The Nak is also unreadable.
It changed again in a few days.
It had reached a level that no one dared look up to.
One who is far beyond the realm of understanding.
Altera was moved.
I don’t know why, but I was madly delighted by the incomprehensible creature before my eyes.
I was so excited I wanted to cheer.
It was a strange thing.
Why am I happy to see Twella, who has become an incomprehensible being?
“You always tell fate.”
Twella opened her mouth.
“They act as if they are crazy about fate and are bound by it, but in reality, they don’t even care about fate.”
“What do you see from me?”
Those were the words that came out of Altera’s mouth, but they were not the words that Altera said.
Self-consciousness sank into the confusion.
Altera was in a state where she was looking but unable to see, and listening but unable to hear.
iced coffee.
I see
‘It’ was coming to the forefront.
Altera lost consciousness.
This conversation will not be remembered.
When I opened my eyes, I would go back to the moment I met Twella, and I would feel a slight headache and forget everything.
Because that’s the way I was designed.
It was a little sad, but I thought it couldn’t be helped.
Because these are rules that must be followed in order to have fun.
In the final moments of sinking into the great consciousness, Twella’s voice was heard.
“I’ll show you a funny scene, so listen to what I have to say.”
*
I closed my heavy eyes and opened them.
Altera stared blankly ahead.
Twella was standing.
“You must be tired.”
“a little.”
He opened his mouth, wrapping his head around his pounding head.
“Aside from Quilbian, there’s another one who opened their eyes.”
“I guess so.”
“As expected, you knew.”
“I’ve seen countless futures where Drich joins. There were also many cases where it didn’t.”
“It doesn’t really matter whether it exists or not.”
“That’s right.”
“Quilbian is… … .”
“It’s okay. You’ll figure it out on your own. But if it doesn’t work out, there’s nothing I can do about it.”
Even Quilbian, who has a special nak, is just a supporting character who will disappear in vain.
I wouldn’t be much different.
Because you won’t be able to escape the gravity of fate that Twella has created.
“You’ve changed completely in a few days. Now I can’t even read you. You must think of me as a lowly insect.”
“There is no bug that speaks so well.”
Altera laughed self-deprecatingly.
“How do I look to you now? You can probably see through me. Am I human? Or a goblin? Did my memories get manipulated by someone else? Or did I do it of my own accord?”
“Do you want to know the truth?”
“I need to know. I can’t stand it anymore. My existence is becoming increasingly colorless. I’m not afraid of disappearing. But I can’t stand being dumb and not knowing anything.”
Twella has arrived.
The thin index finger moved towards Altera’s forehead.
I swallowed dry saliva and stared at my fingers.
“Come on, tell me the truth.”
My whole body trembled with anticipation that sprouted from fear.
His fingers touched his forehead.
What dramatic changes will come?
I closed my eyes for a long time.
Has something changed?
I slowly opened my eyes and saw Twella taking a step back.
“It’s not time yet.”
“what?”
“One week. Just live like this for a week.”
“… … Whose intention is that?”
“I’ll call it fate.”
It wasn’t the answer I wanted. But strangely enough, my thirst for the truth had disappeared.
“You’ve come to an agreement with something inside me, haven’t you?”
“well.”
“Am I human? Or a goblin?”
“Is that a big deal?”
Altera smiled crookedly.
“No, that’s not important.”
Just follow Twella’s words.
Something higher than that, something that could be called a soul, was whispering to me.
“What should I do?”
“You can do whatever you want.”
“Those kids in the regular kennel. Can we help them?”
“You can do whatever you want with that.”
“As you wish.”
Altera has decided.
“I will stay by your side and watch over you. That is my choice. I don’t know if this decision is based on my own conscious mind, but my attention is solely focused on you, so it can’t be the wrong answer.”
“Then do that.”
Twella turned around. He asked her back as she walked away.
“What are you going to do now?”
“I will wait.”
“what?”
“Time.”
Tick tock, she spoke playfully, but her expression did not change.
It was as if all human emotional realm had been removed. He had been endlessly swept away by the waves of fate, and there was nothing left that could be called humanity.
“I think you’d answer me now, but am I going to die?”
“No. You can’t die.”
“You can’t die?”
It’s not ‘I won’t die’, it’s ‘I can’t die’. Why do those words sound so disappointing?
“See you next time. If I can.”
It was Twella who left after saying a brief farewell.
*
“Shall we eat?”
Quilbian fidgeted with his left hand under the table at the sound of the words coming from the back of his head.
Ascetic Big.
I pretended not to hear and glanced back. Drool was dripping from my gaping jaw. It was a bizarre sight, but no one in the restaurant seemed to care.
Ah, Drich cursed softly.
“Quil.”
“Not yet.”
It’s been two days since Altera disappeared without even leaving a message.
The ascetics began to examine Quilbian and Drich one by one.
This must be because the stomach magic that Altera had been using along with the magic to change one’s appetite was removed.
“Why didn’t I recognize these ripe guys?”
“You must have been drinking.”
“Should I eat it right now?”
The one talking to the ascetic Big was the ascetic Dohanna.
Quilbian forced a smile and ate the food.
“The amount of Nak is small, but it smells different. If I eat this, my magical powers might increase.”
Dohanna’s hand went to Quilbian’s shoulder. Something sticky and mucus-like was smeared on his shoulder.
It was extremely unpleasant.
I would feel so relieved if I could hit his head with the spoon I was holding.
“Hyodan-nim hasn’t spoken yet. So, you shouldn’t touch Altera’s things yet.”
The ascetic who appeared on the other side opened his mouth. A large goblin. His name was Dunbel, right?
Unlike Big and Dohanna, who were drooling, Dunbel seemed to maintain some level of order.
“But after a week, we can dispose of it according to the rules… … .”
Dunbel laughed heartily, sticking out his long tongue.
“Let’s all eat it together then.”
Fuck.
It seemed like the memorial day had been decided.
