The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 30

Episode 30
“The smell of rotten meat is starting to come out of the porridge.”
Drich said, rinsing his mouth with water.
“The magic must have worn off. It will be completely gone by tomorrow evening.”
Quilbian wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
There was a faint but strong taste in the black porridge.
“You said you’d eat us in a week?”
“Was it Dunbel? Everyone else’s eyes were rolled back except for that one. I don’t think they’ll last even a week.”
We were constantly stared at by the ascetics until the moment we left the restaurant. How delicious do we look? I wanted to grab one of them and ask him.
“If the spell is lifted tomorrow, I won’t be able to eat.”
“then…….”
“We have to move tonight.”
Altera disappeared without a word, and there was no contact from Twella.
Isolated state.
The situation was not good enough to wait with hope.
Drich clenched his fist and tapped his mouth. His troubled friend looked toward the dormitory.
“If we were to hit, who would it be first? Is it Geron after all?”
“We need to kill that guy who’s wandering around alone.”
“What next? An all-out war is out of the question. Even if we can take two or three of them, we’ll still die.”
“So you have to hit and run.”
The number of ascetics living in the eastern dormitory varied, sometimes as few as six, and sometimes as many as ten.
“Nine. That’s the number I saw at the restaurant.”
“Damn it. Why do there have to be so many of them?”
“Let’s first get an estimate. This is my first time fighting using magic.”
I’m starting to get nervous.
If you’re really unlucky, you’ll break bones and knock out teeth in a neighborhood fight.
But the fight here is one where one misstep will result in death.
After the fight, there won’t be any of that stuff like putting your arms around each other and laughing.
If you get caught, you get a meal.
Drich shivered as he recalled the bad ending.
“Do you want to fight?”
Quilbian asked.
“I’ve never been hit before.”
“Okay.”
“you?”
“The one who gets hit without hurting, and the one who gets hit with pain.”
“Are the goblins going to hit me gently?”
Drich said with a grin.
“I have to try to get hit without getting hurt.”
After sharing a few nervous laughs, I headed to Altera’s room. I ran into the ascetic on the stairs, and he smacked his lips as if he was trying to show me something.
They were a bunch of noisy guys.
“Take as many talismans as you can and books on magic… … .”
“These two are enough. You won’t learn the rest anyway.”
He threw two books of magic with the Hwang Hyung’s spells written on them to Drich. Drich put the books inside his shirt.
“Take this.”
Drich handed me something. I took it and saw that it was a small wooden dagger. The blade and handle combined were smaller than the palm of my hand. It looked like a child’s toy.
“What is this?”
“The teacher explained it to me when you weren’t around. It’s a useful tool.”
“This? How do you use it?”
“I don’t know.”
I held it in my hand and looked at it from front to back.
What can you do with a blunt wooden dagger?
First, I tried pouring the Nak in.
The Nak that had been lingering inside his body moved through his hand and into the dagger. It was a pure movement of power that did not involve forming a seal or following any magical system.
“This is useful… … .”
As I was looking at the dagger without any change, Nak, who had been slowly moving towards the dagger, suddenly started to rush towards the dagger as if he was going crazy.
Out of control.
Quilbian opened his eyes wide and turned the dagger towards the wall.
At that moment.
Choaaaah!
The toy dagger split into hundreds of strands like a horse’s tail, wiping away everything in front of it.
Quilbian sank to the ground, his knees giving out. Drich, who had been gathering things from behind, approached him, his mouth gaping.
“… … Did I just almost die?”
“I also felt bad so I changed direction.”
The dagger fell out of his grasp.
The Nak inside my body was completely dried up. My physical and mental strength were sucked out as well, so my head was spinning and my vision was blurry.
“Hey hey, are you okay?”
“Wow, I think I’m going to die.”
My fingertips were trembling. I lay down on the floor with Drich’s help.
“What’s wrong? Your face is blue. It’s not just empty words, it’s real blue.”
“Oh, really?”
“Hey hey!”
My eyes slowly closed. I saw Drich’s surprised face. He came closer and slapped my cheek repeatedly, and it hurt so badly.
Stop it, kid.
I wanted to shout out a bowl of curses, but I didn’t even have the strength to speak.
“Sore… … sick… … .”
*
Ah, the thick breath caught in my throat.
Quilbian’s eyes widened.
“Quil!”
Drich’s hands touched his face.
“Are you awake? Do you understand what I’m saying? Are you okay?”
“… … .”
Quillvien raised his hand with difficulty and slapped Drich on the cheek. The slap sounded weak. Not liking it, he slapped him again.
“I almost got slapped in the face.”
“Who would faint like that? Do you know how surprised I was?”
“If you’re surprised, then be surprised. Why are you hitting someone in the face?”
My cheeks were still cold.
Quillvien straightened up. He looked straight out the window, but it was dark outside, where it should have been bright.
“How many hours was I passed out?”
“4 hours.”
“This is fucked up.”
“It’s not that fucked up. I woke up before dinner, so that’s okay.”
If you disappear during meal times, which are basically just a headcount check, the ascetics will rise up like a swarm of bees and search the area around the dormitory.
Quillvian looked at the daggers scattered on the floor, then turned his gaze to the wall.
A chest of drawers split diagonally, books cut cleanly, and countless scratches on the walls.
“If a goblin gets hit by this, it will die in one hit, right?”
“It doesn’t make sense to live with this.”
“The teacher left behind something very useful.”
He stood up with a groan, gathering up his dagger and shoving it into the back of his trousers.
“But can you use that? If you use it once, you’ll pass out.”
“If I were alone, it would be a suicide device. But there are two of us, right?”
Quilbian put a hand on Drich’s shoulder.
“I’m not that heavy, so if you have to, just carry me and run.”
“I really hope that doesn’t happen.”
Just once, when you’re cornered, a wooden dagger will save your life.
Quilbian checked the internal organs.
I was worried because the dagger was greedily eaten, but fortunately it was in the same condition as usual.
“That’s amazing.”
Drich said.
“what?”
“Yes, Nak. It was definitely empty earlier. But it filled up quickly while I was lying down.”
“The teacher said the same thing. Other people’s narc is created within their bodies, but mine comes from somewhere.”
If Drich had used a dagger, he might have been unconscious for longer.
“First, hide these in the room.”
Quillvian grabbed the amulet hidden inside his clothes.
“Are you going to do it right after dinner and the sun sets?”
“Let’s report the location of Geron.”
Drich glanced out the window.
“It’s hard to handle everything anyway.”
“One or two. Let’s reduce our numbers and go west.”
Altera had to join up with Twella.
“There really is such a thing as fate, and he’ll do anything for Twella.”
“The teacher said that supporting roles are not included.”
“Then I have to throw a tantrum and ask them to look after me. I can’t just sit there and get eaten.”
The day before slaughter, he thought of the pigs that had been crying pitifully while looking at him. Did they also vaguely know that the day of their death was coming?
Quilbian had no intention of being dragged to the workbench and quietly killed like a pig.
“let’s go.”
After collecting my things, I went down the stairs. Luckily, I didn’t encounter any ascetics.
I went into the bedroom, pulled open the drawer against the wall, and hid my tools in the gap.
“How about taking that dagger with you? Just in case.”
Drich said.
“You might get caught for no reason. It might not seem like much to us, but the goblins might react sensitively.”
“I have to go back to the restaurant naked. This is driving me crazy.”
Drich pulled out the amulet hidden inside the cloth and placed it at the back of the drawer.
“Hyodan, the other goblins seemed afraid of that kid. Since Dunbel warned us, at least today will be okay. But maybe not.”
“It would be more fun to stick your head in a lion’s snout.”
I left the room with Drich.
I headed to the cafeteria, blending in with the cadets moving according to the time.
I ate the food under the ascetics’ cold gaze. I was so out of it that I couldn’t even taste the strong taste of the food.
“excuse me.”
Drich gave a hint.
Geron was seen leaving the restaurant first.
“Either you catch that guy and run away, or you just run away. It’s one of the two.”
“Just jumping around doesn’t seem like a bad thing.”
“We need to find out how strong we are. This is their breeding ground. We’re going to have to deal with them someday, so we need to check.”
“Yeah, I have to experience it properly once. Are they monsters that I can never catch, or are they ones that I can do?”
Altera destroyed the yellow goblin with one spell.
It is true that he is a monster that cannot be compared to ordinary people, but that does not mean that he is an immortal who cannot die.
If you stab me, I will die.
“let’s go.”
I put the empty bowl on the return table and left the restaurant.
I saw the ‘sun’ moving in the distance.
Night will come soon.
After finishing my evening cleaning, I returned to the bedroom. As soon as I closed the door, I pulled out the drawer and grabbed the tools I had hidden behind it.
As I held the talisman in my hand, I began to feel nervous.
I’m leaving here tonight.
“It’s starting to get dark.”
The light that had been illuminating the living room was fading away. I leaned against the wall and looked outside through the window.
The ascetics who had been loitering in front of the dormitory entered the building one by one.
I crawled under the covers and caught my breath.
How much time has passed?
My sharp ears picked up the sound of footsteps in the hallway.
He winked at Drich.
“Doesn’t it seem like a geron?”
“uh.”
The bedroom door creaked open. The light from the lamp flickered over my eyelids.
Just like last time, Geron took a quick look around the room, closed the door, and left.
“let’s go.”
I put on my shoes and opened the door quietly.
A dark hallway greeted me.
Dormitory in the middle of the night.
It felt like a completely different space than during the day.
Drich gestured. It was in the direction where the footsteps were coming from.
After exchanging glances, he moved.
I moved out of the building, sticking close to the wall.
I glanced at the third and fourth floors, where the lights were still on. There seemed to be no one watching them.
“Should I just get rid of the body? It’s too dangerous.”
Then, just before answering, Quilbian raised his head with his eyes wide open.
I saw Geron, stuck to the wall on the second floor with the lights off. He was moving his limbs as quickly as a salamander and was approaching me.
The moment when you instinctively grab the talisman and try to use magic.
“fizzle.”
Geron brought his index finger to his lips.
A very human gesture.
“If you go that way, you’ll get caught. Follow me.”
Geron, who had come down to the floor, turned around. The rags draped over Geron’s body shook slightly, revealing the body hidden inside.
Four thorny tails were attached to its back.
“Quil.”
Drich raised the hand holding the amulet to his chest, indicating that he was ready to fight.
Geron turned his head.
“If there’s any commotion, they’ll wake up. You don’t want that, do you?”
Quilbian looked around.
It’s still quiet. But as Geron said, the moment it gets noisy, the ascetics will come running out. Monsters who use people as body armor.
“hurry!”
It was a voice that was both urgent and worrying. Quilbian put a hand on Drich’s shoulder.
“Let’s follow for now. If we fight here like he said, there’s no answer.”
I don’t know what their intentions were, but fighting in the middle of enemy territory had to be avoided.
