The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 32

Episode 32
“Are they still just cleaning there?”
“Are you still eating that tasteless porridge?”
“What has changed?”
Questions poured in.
The kids who had been just observing the situation approached me as if nothing had happened.
Children who looked four or five years younger than him. Quilbian studied the children’s faces with his mouth shut.
There were a couple of familiar faces.
It wasn’t that he disappeared after being eliminated, but that Geron rescued him.
“Probably nothing has changed. You guys know what life is like there, right?”
Drich showed his characteristic friendliness and got along well with the children. He answered their questions quickly and smiled a lot, so the children quickly followed suit.
Quilbian just clapped his hands together and then slowly stepped back.
What should I do next? My head was spinning.
I couldn’t stay here long, because my destination and goal were set.
Would it be safe to go west along the Sky Wall? I felt suffocated because I didn’t know the abilities of the Watchers that Geron had mentioned.
While I was thinking about it, an unidentified hand came onto my shoulder. I looked to the side with a start.
Lil sat down next to him, smiling.
“In situations like this, you have to be bright like that friend. I know it’s hard, but you have to smile anyway.”
“I like to laugh, but I can’t laugh right now.”
“I understand how you feel. I felt the same way when I first came here. I felt lost and frustrated. Every day was horrible because I felt hopeless and like nothing was going my way.”
Lil smiled.
“Excuse me, can I speak to you more comfortably?”
“Okay, I’ll make myself comfortable too.”
“Yeah. I like it comfortable.”
Lil let out a sigh.
“Do I look pathetic? I’ve been in a place like this for four years.”
“No. I don’t think so. I know how hard it is to survive and hold out here. It actually looks amazing.”
“Thank you for saying so.”
Lil grabbed Quilbian’s hand. Just like before, he didn’t hesitate to grab it.
It was a bit uncomfortable rather than cozy.
I couldn’t figure out why. It wasn’t because I had any malicious intentions.
Quilbian said, pulling his hand away slightly.
“As Geron said, there is no way out of here.”
“I’ve tried many things in my own way for the past four years. I even received help from Geron, but everything was in vain. If I just took one step, I could go home, but I can’t… … .”
It was a sad voice.
At that moment, Quilbian realized why Lil’s touch was uncomfortable. Unlike his gloomy voice, his eyes did not look sad at all.
The drooping corners of the eyes expressed sadness, but the pupils inside were somehow calm.
When he was sold to the landlord by his father, Quilbian had to be careful to survive. That way he would get beaten less and eat more.
The intuition that had been cultivated through years of being beaten whispered softly. That girl, she’s lying.
“This is fucking bullshit.”
Quilbian deliberately mixed curses in his words. Then he looked into Lil’s eyes again.
Unlike her wide-open mouth, her eyes were still calm. No, it was beyond calm.
These are the eyes of a dead pig.
A pig with only its neck hanging off had eyes like those.
“You must have been pretty rough out there. It’s been a while since I’ve heard such abuse.”
“Sorry. I’m not very good at speaking.”
“No, that could be the case.”
Quilbian asked softly, his fingers curling together.
“Are you going to stay here, Sister?”
“Because I can’t go back to the dorm.”
“Are you going to live and die locked up like this?”
“I will die someday. But I am not just sitting back and playing. I am failing over and over again, but I am learning things along the way. I also have faith in my heart that I will be able to get out someday.”
“What did you get?”
He asked, looking straight into her eyes. Lil’s once friendly smile turned sour.
“I don’t know what’s making you so angry. Did I do something wrong?”
“No, I’m just like this. That’s why I often hear people say I’m a brat when I’m out.”
“Then it was my misunderstanding. Sorry.”
“No. Can you tell me what you got instead? We want to get out of here as quickly as possible.”
“We,” he said, pointing to Drich with his chin.
“Well, first of all, most of the kids who come here are stuck around the dorms.”
“Falling?”
“It literally appears out of thin air. They say it’s near the dormitory because of some kind of magic, but I don’t know the details. Maybe if you ask Geron, he’ll tell you?”
“I didn’t know, but it has nothing to do with escaping.”
“Is that so?”
Lil smiled, showing her upper teeth slightly.
It was a charming smile, but to Quilbian it felt like a means of escape.
“Anything else? I wish you had told me.”
“Sorry. I can’t tell you everything, actually.”
“why?”
“Isn’t that obvious? We still don’t trust you.”
I almost laughed at the word credit. It was a plausible excuse. An excuse that was difficult to refute.
“Could it be that we joined hands with goblins?”
“Yes. It may sound unpleasant, but there’s nothing we can do. If this dwelling that Geron-nim created is discovered, everyone will be in danger.”
“They bring it in first and then verify it.”
“yes.”
“Has that ever happened before? A human who slept with a goblin came here.”
Lil shook his head.
“Fortunately, that hasn’t happened before. But just because it hasn’t happened before doesn’t mean we can rest assured.”
“How are you going to verify it?”
“Geron will do that too.”
Would it be a stretch to say that the smell of a pigsty comes from the smiling face?
“brother!”
“Brother, what’s wrong?”
At the sudden commotion, Quilbian looked towards Drich. Drich was curled up, holding his head with both hands.
no way?
I approached Drich cautiously, keeping an eye out for Lil and the kids.
“Drich, what’s wrong?”
“for a moment…….”
Drich, who had been frowning, slowly opened his eyes. A sharp light gradually appeared in his once dull eyes.
“My external memories have returned. More than before.”
Quillvian patted Drich on the back in relief. He was familiar with the dizziness that came with memories coming back.
Quilbian has experienced it several times.
“I feel a little refreshed now.”
Drich smiled broadly.
“What the heck came to mind?”
“I remembered the delicious food the chef used to make.”
“That would be nice. I have memories like that too.”
There didn’t seem to be any major problems.
While Drich was comforting the surprised children, Geron returned.
“No one followed me. No one was affected by the magic I installed.”
“thank god.”
Lil approached and took the lantern that Geron was holding. He also took the rags he was wearing and put them away.
For a brief moment, I thought they looked like a married couple. At the same time, the feeling of ominousness doubled.
The goblin will not dig a trap.
This thought began to crack.
What if there was a perverted goblin who liked to hit the back of the head with a weak hand rather than press down with force?
Well, if you keep going this way and that way, then you can just fight.
The moment Geron shows any signs of being strange, just destroy him together with Drich.
“wait for a sec.”
Drich put his arm around her shoulder, indicating that she should go outside. Geron sat down in the corner of the room as if nothing had happened. The children ran to Geron and gathered around him.
“why?”
He came out and asked.
“What about you?”
Drich’s eyes sharpened. There seemed to be something fishy about this guy too.
“There are a few things that are a bit daunting.”
“Should I leave quietly or deal with it?”
“treatment?”
“I can’t just leave it like that.”
It was Drich who pointed to the house with his eyes.
“It’s unsettling, but maybe he’s a goblin that really does care about humans.”
Despite Lil’s suspicious expression, it was undeniable that Geron had brought the children here.
“If we kill Geron, the lives of the children left here will become difficult. I see that Geron brought the food as well.”
“hey.”
Drich pushed his face close.
“I know you’re a loyal person. I like that kind of personality of yours too. But the situation is what it is. If you leave behind a rat on the back of your head and get bitten, you’ll die without being able to do anything.”
It was a cool-headed but correct decision.
At the same time, I was curious. If it were Drich, who I had seen so far, he would have made a choice for the children rather than a cruel decision, even if it meant taking risks.
Perhaps conscious of the gaze, Drich smiled awkwardly.
“I know, I know how cruel my words were. But Quillian, one must always look at the bigger picture.”
“Something big?”
“Yes. You and the teacher have always said that Twella will solve everything. If we are to help Twella, we must survive and go west. The children left here? Of course, it may be dangerous for a while.”
Drich grabbed his shoulder.
“But if things go well, those kids will be able to return home. Twella has a different talent, right? He’ll be able to open up a path!”
Drich stepped back, letting go of her hand.
“My heart aches too. But when it comes to something big, you have to know how to overlook minor issues.”
Drich was looking at me earnestly as if asking me to understand his feelings.
And Quilbian sensed a strangeness in Drich’s eyes.
It’s the snow I saw a little while ago.
Drich had the same look in his eyes as Lille.
Quilbian didn’t hide his trembling feelings. It was none other than Drihi. He was a comrade and friend who had to cross the line together.
“You lied earlier, didn’t you?”
“Lies? Me?”
“Memories, you know. What on earth could possibly make someone change so suddenly? Huh? What kind of shitty memories could make someone change their attitude so suddenly?”
It must be a memory that can change your values in an instant. It’s not something like food made by a chef.
Drich looked blank, then frowned.
“As expected, you know how to recognize things.”
“What is it? Is it something you have to hide from me?”
“… … You said there was a fight between family members?”
“That’s right. Your father and brothers… … ”
“There was more to the story. It just occurred to me.”
“What is it?”
“I’m talking about the sword my father wielded. It wasn’t just used against my uncles.”
Drich stroked the back of his neck.
“My father tried to kill me. I was lucky enough to survive, but I can’t forget the look in my father’s eyes as he tried to kill me.”
“… … .”
“Isn’t it funny? One side is being sold out by my father, and the other side is trying to kill me. That’s why. I was betrayed by the person I respected the most. So I can’t trust that guy. And those guys over there, especially Lil.”
Drich continued, scratching his forehead.
“Of course you are excluded. I wouldn’t mind giving my life to you. We’ve been through all the hardships together. We’ll be friends forever.”
Friends forever.
I found myself cursing at the ticklish words.
“Shit.”
“If it’s good.”
“Okay, so are you going to move right now?”
If you’ve made up your mind to do it, there’s no reason to hesitate.
That was when.
“Hey, guys?”
Lil came out of the house. Quilbian was wary of Lil. To be honest, she was a woman who was more annoying than Geron.
“don’t do it.”
“Did you hear that?”
Drich smiled crookedly. He was holding an amulet in his hand.
“Just go. I don’t want to fight. You guys can go your own way. Leave us alone.”
“Hearing you say that makes me even more anxious.”
With a snap, the black energy emerging from the amulet began to take the shape of a hammer. Lil squinted as he looked at the black hammer.
“You shouldn’t repay kindness in that way. It’s against morality.”
“Isn’t this the wrong place to look for Dori? More than that, I find you so suspicious. My friend thinks so too.”
He looked ready to rush in and swing his hammer at any moment. Quilbian held out his hand to block Drih’s path.
“Sister. I’ve been eating a lot of dirty rice since I was little. That’s why I can tell when you make a dirty expression.”
I took a step forward. Just then, Geron also came out of the house.
“This is a fucking situation. We can’t trust each other. But I’m asking just in case. If you lied to me about something, tell me now. If you understand, I’ll leave quietly. But if not.”
Quillvien fiddled with the sword tucked into his waistband.
“It’s going to get a little noisy.”
