The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 444

444. Utilization of regulations (4)
November 8, 2016.
The 45th presidential election of the United States was held.
I watched the vote counting broadcast with a vice chairman at the financial tower, and not only we, but everyone at the financial tower held their breath and stayed up all night concentrating on the vote counting broadcast.
“I hate to say this, but the election predictions that came out yesterday are not very good.”
“That’s the election prediction made by the media.”
“The New York Times, a highly authoritative newspaper, predicts that the Democratic candidate has a 90% chance of winning. CNN is also predicting a landslide victory for the Democratic Party. Some online media outlets even predict a 98% chance for the Democratic Party to win.”
CNN and NYT.
They were media outlets representing the United States.
It was also a media outlet that was evaluated as having excellent information capabilities.
Not only them, but most media outlets were predicting a landslide defeat for Trump.
“Predictions are just predictions. In an election, no one knows until the ballot box is opened.”
“Even the pundits are betting on Trump’s defeat. He has only a 28% chance of winning.”
“That’s a higher number than the media predicted.”
“It seems that there are quite a few gamblers who aim for the reverse, which is why the figure is 28%.”
Gamblers don’t bet based on feeling.
The stakes for this US presidential election alone amounted to 300 billion won.
In order to win, they would analyze various information and data and place bets.
“The media is heavily politically connected, so it may have influenced the election results. However, gamblers only bet on money, so they are more trustworthy.”
“Still, the odds of winning are less than 30%.”
“30% is not a low probability. It will take some time for the results to be counted, so take a rest and come back.”
The tighter the election, the later the results are decided.
Especially in the case of the United States, it took longer because the results could only be determined by opening the ballot boxes and mail-in ballot boxes.
“Exit polls will start coming out soon. I’ll check the exit polls in the key battlegrounds and then take a break.”
“Isn’t the central region the first to have exit poll results?”
“I understand that exit polls from Indiana and Kentucky are coming out the fastest.”
We turned our attention back to the TV.
Exit polls conducted by CNN have begun to be released.
“Trump won Indiana by 6%!”
“They won by a huge margin in Kentucky. They won by a comfortable 62%.”
“It is an area where the Republican Party won in the last presidential election.”
It was an area where Trump’s landslide victory was expected.
If he had lost Indiana and Kentucky, there would have been no need to watch this election.
It was an exit poll result that should not be given much significance, as it was a victory where it was obviously supposed to be won.
“Now the exit poll results from the most important regions are announced.”
“The Florida exit polls are next, right?”
“Yes. It’s the southeastern coastal region where Florida and Virginia are located. It’s also an area where the approval ratings rose somewhat due to the shipping industry pledge. Florida in particular has a whopping 29 electoral votes.”
This was the region that would become a barometer for this presidential election.
Without securing Florida’s electoral votes, it would have been virtually impossible to win the presidential election.
“I’m a little anxious because the Democratic Party won in the last presidential election.”
“Still, it is worth looking forward to, as it is a region where support rates have been rising thanks to promises of investment in the shipping industry.”
After 30 minutes, the exit polls for Florida were released.
And we clenched our fists and cheered when the exit polls showed something completely different from the opinion polls.
“Trump won in Florida!”
“We won by a narrow margin of about 1%.”
“It could be overturned depending on the results of the mail-in ballot box opening, but there is a very good chance of winning!”
Trump also won in Florida.
In Georgia, which was announced shortly after, he won by a whopping 5%.
“We won comfortably in Georgia. There’s no chance of a reversal here.”
“Georgia is a state that the Republicans won in previous elections, so it was expected.”
“South Carolina was also a comfortable victory.”
“We won by a whopping 14%!”
Trump was also the candidate who won in the Southeast region.
It was an area where investment in the shipping industry had some influence, although not enough to turn the tide.
“Now that we’ve won Florida, we just need to continue our lead. Especially in Ohio and North Carolina, where polling agencies have been giving conflicting results.”
“This is a close battleground. If we win here, Trump’s chances of winning will increase significantly.”
Thirty minutes later, the Ohio exit polls were released.
Ohio was known as a very close battleground state, but the result was a landslide victory for Trump.
“Trump won by over 8%! If this continues, Trump will really get elected!”
“You said there was no need to trust opinion polls, right? Korea has a small population, so accurate surveys are possible, but the US has a large land area and a large population, so opinion polls are much less accurate.”
“North Carolina was also won by more than 3%. This was a state where Republicans won in previous elections, but it was not a place where they could be sure of victory.”
Trump’s continued victory.
But the next area was not one where victory was guaranteed.
Because the next exit poll area was the old industrial area, the Rust Belt region.
“If we can win even in the Rust Belt, we won’t need to look any further.”
“This is a region where the Democratic Party is strong, so it will be difficult to win.”
The Rust Belt region where everyone expected Trump to lose.
But when I opened the results, the results were completely different.
“Trump won Pennsylvania too! It was only by less than 0.8%, but he managed to take a place that was predicted to be a Democratic victory!”
“Michigan won by a smaller margin. By about 0.2 percent.”
“I really didn’t expect to win even the Rust Belt.”
It was a moment when Trump’s chances of victory increased by leaps and bounds.
We both felt relaxed and drowsy at the same time.
I needed a little break because I couldn’t properly carry out my work today like this.
“Shall we go to the sauna together? I think we’ll see some results when we get back.”
“I will take care of it. I will be happy to help you.”
***
I came back after taking a short break in the sauna.
The preliminary exit poll results are out, and the results are in Trump’s favor.
“According to data provided by American media outlets, the coalition of votes among women and minorities, who were expected to favor the Democratic Party, was smaller than expected.”
“That must be why the results are completely different from what the media predicted.”
“This is also thanks to victories in states like Pennsylvania and Michigan, which were completely unexpected.”
“It’s also thanks to the minor candidates receiving a considerable amount of votes.”
More than 5% of the votes went to minor candidates.
From the Democratic Party’s perspective, it was as if a minor candidate had stolen the votes they should have received.
If the Democratic Party had absorbed only some of the votes of minor candidates, the outcome could have been completely different.
“That’s not all. There is analysis that the majority of white working class people voted for candidate Trump, and that the Republican Party won thanks to its election strategy.”
“Once you win, the media and experts will come up with excuses.”
“That’s true. There are even media outlets that point out that the Democratic candidate’s poor health and lack of local campaigning was the reason for his defeat.”
The election had to be won.
There was no such thing as a beautiful defeat, and the election world was a winner-take-all world.
“Trump won this presidential election, but I don’t know if he can be re-elected.”
“They won the Electoral College, but the Democratic candidate actually won more popular votes.”
In Korea, whoever gets more votes wins.
However, because the United States has an electoral college system, there have been many cases where a candidate lost even though he or she received more votes.
“Now that this election is over, I need to draw a line with who will win the next election.”
“Do you think that re-election is completely impossible?”
“I guess so. Tell David to approach the next presidential candidate without being too obvious.”
“When you say next presidential candidate, are you referring to this year’s Democratic Party candidate?”
“A new person will emerge as the next presidential candidate. The only card the Democratic Party can play right now is Biden, who was vice president under Obama.”
He was the last American president I remember.
After that, I didn’t know who would become president.
Trump could have succeeded in his comeback, or Biden could have won a second term.
It doesn’t really matter.
If we joined hands with both sides, Taewoo Group would win regardless of who won.
“Will the Democratic Party nominate Biden as its presidential candidate? As you know, the current Democratic candidate has not been able to campaign properly due to his old age. But Biden was born in 1942.”
“Are you 74 now? You’ll be 78 when the next presidential election comes around.”
“If he were to run for reelection, he would be over 80 years old. Would the Democratic Party support such a candidate?”
Although old age was a problem.
The Democratic Party did not have the capacity to create new cards.
So, I had to take out the old cards that were stored in the warehouse and use them.
“President Trump is not young either. There is only a three-year age difference between them.”
“I keep forgetting how old President Trump is because he goes around making such fiery remarks.”
While I was talking about various things with Vice President Han.
A cell phone that only a few people knew about rang.
I got a call from the main character of this presidential election, President-elect Trump.
I never expected that he would call me directly, so I checked the caller ID several times before answering.
“I sincerely congratulate you on being elected the 45th President of the United States!”
[Thanks to you. I heard that you made the last-minute promise to the shipping industry. From the Rust Belt to the coastal areas. We were able to win thanks to your promise!]
“No. We all won thanks to the President’s outstanding abilities.”
I tried to be as humble as possible.
For four years, he was going to be the most powerful man in the world, so he had to be humble to this extent.
[I would like to formally invite you to the inauguration ceremony. I will send you an invitation, so please be sure to attend and enjoy the victory banquet with us.]
“It is an honor. I will visit the White House with a huge gift for your election.”
[I’m already looking forward to the gift that Chairman Kim prepared. Let’s do well in the future. I’ll take good care of you too.]
“Thank you so much for calling me despite your busy schedule.”
[When my election was confirmed, I thought of you first. Let’s talk again.]
A phone call from President-elect Trump.
It wasn’t just any phone call, it was the first phone call I received right after I was elected.
It meant that he thought I was important, but I didn’t react much.
“What’s wrong? You’ve just received a call from the person who’s going to be the President of the United States, and you don’t look happy.”
“The White House is like a bathroom. The situation before you go in is completely different from the situation when you go in.”
“Do you think President-elect Trump will change once he enters the White House?”
“Even if things don’t change completely, I don’t think you’ll ever be as grateful to me as you are now.”
Still, it was true that it was a great help.
I could have relaxed the regulations to the extent that I wanted for the business.
In particular, there will still be a sense of gratitude that will allow them to lightly trample on the shipping alliance that is ignoring Taeun Shipping.
