The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 45

Episode 45
It makes sense.
All the loneliness and resentment that had been piled up crumbled away in an instant.
It was a sense of liberation that would make me laugh even if the person in front of me was a goblin.
Quillvian stretched out his hand forward.
“It’s there, right? It’s not an illusion, is it? Yes?”
“It can’t be an illusion, since I’m alive. From some perspectives, it could be an illusion.”
The other person’s hand grabbed Quilbian’s hand.
“Get up first.”
I stood up with support.
“It looks terrible. The smell is also terrible. If I had been even a little bit late, I would have gotten sick and died.”
Quilbian chewed over the words the man had spoken. Even though it had taken some time, even though it had been a little late.
A tone of speech that indicates that one knows all the circumstances.
“Do you know me?”
“Knowing has a very complicated meaning for me. In that sense, I’m not sure whether I should say I know you or not.”
“Puns or whatever, go ahead and do whatever you want.”
Just knowing that there was someone else by my side gave me peace of mind.
“You were the one who sent the bird, weren’t you?”
“Bird? Oh, that’s not me.”
“yes?”
“It’s not that important, so don’t worry about it. More importantly, aren’t you curious about what kind of person I am?”
“I’m curious. I’m madly curious. But what’s the use of me asking? What can a blind idiot do?”
“It’s self-deprecating. Half-mad. And yet, it’s foolishness, obsession, or fate that keeps him alive.”
fate.
It was a word that made my eyes naturally twitch.
“Let’s wash first. Even if my taste is mild, this smell is too bad.”
My body ached. I started waving my hands and feet.
“Stay still. You stink.”
“Oh, is that magic?”
“Sorcery? Oh, that.”
The man didn’t explain in detail.
The wind blew across his face. He must have gone outside.
Where are you headed?
“Wash it.”
The body that had been suspended in the air fell. I took a deep breath and crossed my arms.
Splash, my body fell into the water.
It was a time when I was struggling to find my balance.
“It’s a shallow place.”
The man said a word.
I came to my senses and slowly stretched out my feet. I could feel the rough texture of the stones through the soles of my feet. When did I take off my shoes?
“Wash thoroughly.”
It felt like I met the owner again.
Quilbian asked again, washing his body with cool water.
“Should I wash it and eat it?”
“you?”
“yes.”
“Why should it be like that?”
“Or else it’s fine.”
Is he a human, or is he a goblin who betrays at the end like Geron?
I was soaking my head in water and rubbing my hair. My back felt tingly. It was a familiar sensation.
He raised his upper body. The bird landed on his shoulder. The clever bird was careful not to let its talons dig into his flesh.
Beep, the bird let out a short cry. It was directed towards the direction where the man was standing.
“It seems like you are both fearless.”
They look alike?
“Are you saying that we look alike?”
The man did not answer.
After I washed up and went outside, a warm breeze blew. The warm breeze blew through my hair and swept over my entire body.
The moisture disappeared in an instant.
“I have to throw away my clothes.”
The body was lifted again.
“Now, just a moment!”
“why?”
“Should we continue like this?”
“Is there a problem?”
Quilbian covered his groin with his hand.
“This is a bit… … .”
“For humans, saving face is a sad thing.”
The man spoke quietly, as if talking to himself.
His body swayed. Quilbian couldn’t even scream due to the wind pressure that felt like his neck would snap or break.
How many seconds, no, how many minutes did I have to suffer in the wind?
The body touched the floor.
“There are clothes in front of you, so just put them on.”
I was completely out of my mind.
As I felt around, clothes came into my hands. I also felt the ropes connecting each dormitory.
“Wasn’t there any coffee here?”
“Coffee?”
I got dressed and stood up.
“Yeah, coffee. I think there was some.”
“If you search the 3rd or 4th floor, you’ll find it. Some of the goblins were drinking coffee.”
“Yes, there was.”
The man in front seemed to know something about this place.
“excuse me.”
I spoke to him but he was quiet.
“hey?”
I approached where I had heard the voices, but the man I had been talking to just a moment ago was gone.
“It’s a mess, but there are some coffee beans.”
I heard a noise from behind. Had he been searching the dormitory? It was unbelievably fast.
“Don’t you know how to make coffee?”
“I know, I know.”
“Try it.”
“Can you see my condition? I can’t see anything. It took me days to even light a fire.”
“Then try it for a week. Or a month, or if that’s not enough, try it for a whole year.”
Quilbian flinched and took a step back. There was a sound right in front of him.
“I like it written in moderation.”
The man put some coffee beans in my hand.
“… … Wouldn’t it be faster if you did it yourself?”
“bothered.”
“You’re telling me to wait a few days because it’s annoying? You’re a strange person.”
“Because we have plenty of time. More importantly, do you feel any discomfort talking to me?”
“Yes, well. There’s nothing uncomfortable. There are a lot of things I don’t understand, but I’m not in a position to argue about that.”
A large hand came up to my head.
Quillvin said with a bitter laugh.
“Are you going to kill me?”
“Why are you killing the humans who run errands for coffee?”
My scalp started to prickle. My facial muscles started to twitch involuntarily. Just before I could ask what he was doing, the man took his hand away.
“It’s still a mess even when I look at it again.”
“yes?”
“I mean, it’s interesting. Less so than what I’ve seen before. It’s clearly crazy by human standards, but it’s not crazy. It’s an interesting state where black and white coexist. When do you think the balance will collapse?”
“I have absolutely no idea what you’re saying.”
“Then how about asking the kid behind you?”
The kid behind you?
Quilbian tried to respond with a chuckle. What can you see when you can’t see?
I turned my head with that thought.
Was there.
Twellaga.
Her fantasy was looking at me with a dull expression.
“You, don’t get involved with that. You’ll be unhappy.”
A dull hallucination gnawed at my ears.
The corners of his eyes twitched.
Quilbian turned his face towards the man in surprise.
“Hey, do you see that?”
There was no answer.
“Do you see that fucking bitch behind me?”
As I was yelling, a voice came from far away, from what I thought was the roof of the dormitory.
“Hurry up and make some coffee. I’ll be looking at the sky.”
“My words… … .”
“I’ll tell you when it comes. If it tastes good, I’ll tell you kindly. If it tastes really bad, we’ll think about it when we get there.”
Quilbian tightened his grip on the coffee beans.
A man who calls people ‘humans’.
That means he wasn’t human. But he didn’t look like a goblin either.
I had a feeling that even if I grabbed his trouser leg and begged him, the man wouldn’t say anything.
so.
“I’ll get there as quickly as possible, so give me a proper explanation.”
He raised his head and shouted.
*
I put my little finger in my mouth and waited. The burning sensation that had been piercing to my bones gradually disappeared.
I don’t think it will cause any trouble.
Even though I was careful, I couldn’t avoid getting burned.
Starting a fire was easy enough with a flint, but pouring coffee into a small cup was no easy task.
First, grind the coffee beans, put them in a large bowl, and pour hot water over them.
This is also coffee.
I brought it to the man on the rooftop and he laughed. The bowl I was holding slipped out of my hands and after a while there was a loud clanking sound.
I threw it over the roof.
“I have a sophisticated mouth.”
He was a picky gentleman.
The coffee beans were crushed and placed in a fine cloth, then steeped. It took about three days to find a cute cup to brew the coffee in while walking around the entire dormitory.
“The scent is too faint.”
It was something the man said while drinking coffee.
“Can’t I just eat it roughly? What’s coffee?”
“People who don’t even know the history of coffee always say things like that.”
“What history is there to fill your stomach with?”
“Your words are becoming more and more harsh.”
“I can’t help it because that’s just how it is. Why?”
“Okay, okay. I’m the one who kept my promise, so I’m the one who’s guilty.”
promise.
Quilbian took a step in the direction of the man.
“You came here because you knew me?”
“That thing hanging from your neck isn’t just a lump of fat, right? Of course you should think of it that way.”
“How do you know?”
“I know. I guess I should say that I know because I saw it.”
“Stop playing with words.”
“You punk, are you in a position to say something like that?”
Suddenly I was lifted up. My legs were up and my head was on the ground. In that state, I swayed from side to side like a pendulum.
“T, t, shit… … foot!”
“Don’t you have any new curse words? I’ve already collected all of them, so they’re not interesting.”
Blood rushed to my head.
The more Quilbian struggled, the more his mind became hazy.
“If you get excited, your intraocular pressure will rise. You should take care of your eyes, even if you can’t see. Stop yelling.”
“Kill… … this son of a bitch… … .”
“You’re making a big mistake. What’s the point of killing and saving yourself? I don’t care about that. I’ve observed it enough to know that it’s pointless.”
Kkudangtang!
His body rolled on the floor. Quilbian had to cough roughly from the shock that spread from his lower back.
“Coffee, make me another one. I think I’ll be okay if I just try a little harder.”
“… …What do you want from me?”
“I mean, your head. It seems useless. Should I cut it off? I keep saying it. Coffee. Strong coffee. That will do.”
“That crazy guy.”
“No, no. You’re the crazy one, aren’t you? The kid next to you proves it.”
For some reason, I could feel the man’s finger, the direction he was pointing.
It is felt even though it is not seen.
Quilbian looked to the right.
“I told you, you won’t look good if you get involved with that guy. It’s not too late.”
Twella’s fantasy straightened her fingers.
“Jump down. It’s better to die now. That’s the answer.”
“okay?”
“You said that earlier too. Just kill me. Why beg? It’s your choice. Protect your dignity! Now is the time to fly free!”
“If I throw myself off the roof, I’m free?”
“Yeah, what do you think?”
Quillvian waved his hand. It sliced through the illusion.
Twella’s neck, which had just fallen off, smiled faintly.
He said that with his head spinning.
“Just die, okay? Aren’t you bored?”
“Ugh. I’m bored. But hearing you say that makes me want to live again. Thanks, you damn friend.”
I stood up and looked in the direction where the man was.
uh?
Even if he said he saw it, he would just turn his head as if it were a habit. Since he was blind, he couldn’t see the shape.
But now.
“Vision does not perfectly correspond to the concept of ‘seeing.’”
A man’s voice was heard from somewhere with a faint glow.
Quilbian raised his hand in surprise and rubbed his eyes.
Nothing has changed.
As I continued to grope my eyes like that, I realized that even if I covered my eyes with my palm, the place where the man was was still glowing faintly.
Light has come.
