The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 62

Episode 62
“So what is that promise?”
“Watching over you. Maybe giving you a little help?”
“Who did you make the promise with?”
Winte kept his mouth shut.
“You said you kept all your promises. Now that the contract is over, let’s talk things through.”
“There is still something left.”
“So you can’t tell me?”
Winte’s eyes turned to Quilbian.
Golden eyes.
“Does it matter? It’s all over.”
“What does it mean to end? I’m still alive and well, and based on the circumstances, it seems like the person who made the promise is the owner.”
Quilbian pointed to a falcon sprawled on the rooftop. From a distance, it looked like a large cow lying down.
“Just ask.”
“yes?”
“Ask him and he’ll tell you.”
Quilbian waved his hand.
“Okay, okay. If you don’t want to talk about it, don’t. I have my own thoughts.”
“… …Remember, it is immoral to hold coffee hostage.”
“Is there such a thing as morality in the world? I didn’t know.”
I stood up, giggling. I took a light step and fell down to the rooftop.
There was a heavy sound and a cloud of dust rose.
Quillian waved his hand to blow away the dust and went to a shelf inside the building to pour himself a cup of coffee.
“I want to drink something cold today.”
Winte suddenly appeared from behind and said.
“Make it yourself. I’ll only make mine.”
I received hand-pressed coffee in a cup.
“At first, I wondered what kind of taste this was. But as I drank it, I got attached to it, and as I got attached to it, the taste became more specific. Now, I only drink coffee. I have a body that doesn’t need to drink anything else.”
A man whose gaze doesn’t seem to change even when someone dies in front of him looks quite anxious in front of coffee.
Quillbian blew air, letting the coffee aroma float away.
Winte, his nose twitching, looked at the shelf.
The coffee beans moved on their own and ground in the air. The powder was sucked into the cotton cloth and soon turned into a black juice that moved into the cup.
Quilbian said with a grin.
“It looks unappetizing at first glance.”
Winte didn’t even touch the coffee he had made.
“Shall we talk?”
“A story? What story?”
“About the magic I’ve collected. And about goblins. And furthermore, about the world.”
“Is there anything I need to know?”
“It’ll help you get out of here. It’ll take time, but time is worthless to you or me, so it doesn’t matter.”
“You should have said that earlier.”
She prepared coffee with a bright smile.
As Winte looked into the empty space, small ice cubes were created. The ice cubes danced and fell into the glass.
“Good.”
Winte looked satisfied as he drank his coffee.
“Let’s talk while walking. I have a friend who is sleeping on the rooftop.”
“As you wish.”
I picked up a glass and went out of the dormitory.
“Winte said, walking leisurely.
“Where should I start?”
“Goblin, magic, world guitar, and all that stuff are good, but… … First, please explain to me what Winte is. I’m really curious about that.”
“Something close to God.”
“Not like that.”
Quilbian tapped Winte on the shoulder.
“You’ve lived alone your whole life? What, in that cave you mentioned last time? That’s not true.”
“That’s true.”
“If you interact with others, you have a name. Or at least a job. I, living outside, have never heard anyone say, ‘There is a man who is close to God!’”
“That’s right. You’ve called me these things too. Dragon, Dragon, Miracle of the Sky.”
“……yes?”
He stopped walking. Winte moved forward as if he had no intention of waiting.
Quilbian scratched his head and moved again.
“A dragon? The one in the book? The one that can cause natural disasters and save people?”
“Any living thing touched by the designer cannot be restored. I do not have that authority. However, I can cause natural disasters if necessary.”
“Even if it’s just a little bit… … .”
While talking, I suddenly looked up at the sky.
The sun that illuminates all directions.
“Ah. I guess that’s not a lie.”
“I don’t need to lie. Lies are usually used to protect oneself from threats.”
“Is there no danger, Winte?”
“Even when all this is gone, I will remain for a little while. I will stare into the void where everything has disappeared, and soon I will grow tired of it and end my life.”
To put it bluntly, it’s actually scary.
“Why can’t someone so great take me out? I can make you better coffee outside.”
“Because this place is chaotic. This place did not reflect the designer’s intention. It was born from error… … Yes, it is a kind of bug.”
“Bug? Bug?”
“There is something like that.”
What is a bug?
Quilbian looked around. Although it was separated by a special wall called the Sky Wall, the ecosystem here was similar to the outside world.
“The trees are planted properly, and the water is flowing well. It doesn’t look like it’s in disarray, does it?”
“The form is similar. However, the things that are born within this are clearly outside the designer’s intentions, and are a crystallization of disorder. The designer who sees this must be bewildered. There is nothing he can do about it.”
Winte drank coffee.
Quilbian asked, flicking away a bug squirming in front of him.
“Since last time, you keep saying designer, designer… … What is that guy?”
“The only God. The beginning of everything. The one who created not only me, but all of this.”
“Are you the leader of the gods?”
“He’s the captain.”
Winte smiled faintly.
“I guess you could say that.”
“Is that designer watching us?”
“That’s right. I’ll leave some of the singularities to Katshi while observing them while going around various phases.”
“What? Kartsi? What is that?”
“You don’t need to know. Of course, if you want to know, I can tell you the essence.”
Quillvien shook his head.
“Even if I become numb to pain, I can never endure the pain I experienced back then. So keep your mouth shut. I won’t be curious.”
Every time the word ‘essence’ comes out of Winte’s mouth, I flinch.
I never wanted to experience that overwhelming despair again, where everything disappeared and I couldn’t even feel myself.
“By the way.”
Quilbian looked up at the sky.
“Designer! If you’re watching, please let me go! I worked so hard, but you can do that much, right? You created me, right? Then you have to take some responsibility!”
A thunderous voice shook the air.
I waited for a moment.
“There is no answer?”
“He is just an observer now, he does not intervene.”
“Where is such an irresponsible god? This place is also a mess. If there is something wrong, the person who created it should think about fixing it.”
He grumbled and poured coffee into his mouth.
“You have reached a point where you can’t do anything about it. That’s why he is praying for you to become completely independent.”
“Do you pray to God? To whom?”
“To you.”
“yes?”
Winte stopped walking. It seemed like he had finished drinking his coffee. Winte’s hand holding the cup slightly trembled.
Quilbian felt dizzy and squeezed his eyes shut. The scenery had changed.
It was in front of the dormitory.
“… … This is ridiculous.”
“This time, something hot.”
Winte pointed to the shelf.
I continued asking questions while pouring the coffee with all my heart.
“So, even the great god has a problem that he can’t solve, right?”
“In short, that’s it.”
“Then what happens to us? Are we all going to die?”
“That kind of future is also drawn. Depending on what comes from outside, it may disappear in an instant.”
“Outside? Where are you talking about?”
“I don’t know that either. The world has started to revolve around you, and so there are many things I don’t know. Especially here, in the realm of the two-faced, it’s really… … .”
Winte stared blankly at his coffee cup.
I gently pulled the glass and the golden eyes moved along with it. It was so fun that I repeated it several times.
“If you do it one more time, I’ll cut off your neck and put it back on.”
“I’ll stop.”
He handed me a cup of coffee with a friendly smile.
“Even if I knew about designers and such, it wouldn’t be of much use.”
“For now, I guess.”
“Then let’s move on to the goblin. I have a lot of questions about what happened to the Nak I absorbed, and why my body became like this.”
“It’s simple stuff.”
“is it so?”
This time I went up to the rooftop.
The cat was away, having enjoyed her nap.
“Nak is a conduit of power born with the inhabitants of this place. It moves freely within the area of the two sides, but most of it will be useless if it leaves this area.”
“is it so?”
I clenched my fist. Will this body, which neither ages nor gets hurt, return to normal when it goes out into the outside world?
“Do you regret that you lose your strength when you go out?”
“It’s a bit disappointing because it was something I worked so hard to get, but if I could just get out, I’d give it up. What’s the point of living healthy and alone in this remote place? I’d go crazy again.”
“You’re already crazy. So you don’t have to worry about mental issues.”
“I told you, you speak so beautifully.”
I wet my mouth with coffee.
“So anyway? Why did my body become like this? Nak was inside me for a long time. That’s why I could use magic. But back then, my flesh was soft.”
Quilbian pointed to skin that couldn’t be cut even with a sharp mirror.
“You told me over and over again that you are not human.”
“That’s right. Even if your back is broken, you can walk again after resting for a few days. How can you be human?”
“As you said, you have become something that is somewhere between a human and a goblin.”
“Am I a goblin?”
“okay.”
It’s a goblin.
I sniffled once and chuckled.
“So, from now on, I have to eat people too?”
“If you want.”
“Okay. Just thinking about it makes me sick. And you said that if I get out of here, everything will go back to normal?”
“It will be like that. Probably.”
Amadorani? That was a very unsettling word.
“What is the explanation?”
“I told you. I don’t know anything about this place either.”
“You’re such a useless person. You just left me in the middle of the forest without knowing anything?”
“I would say that it was one of many methods. When a human absorbs the goblin’s nak, there is a high probability that their body will disintegrate, but some special individuals inherit the goblin-like traits.”
“What the hell, you were experimenting on me?”
“The more test subjects, the better.”
Winte was drinking coffee with a calm expression.
“In my opinion, you are truly crazy. A human being would do something like that… … .”
“I am not a human. If I had to categorize myself, I am a being much more advanced than you. I am unique.”
“Since you are so great, you don’t need to know about the situations of those below you?”
Winte looked at Quilbian and smiled mischievously. It was a creepy smile.
“I’ll show you in a moment.”
“What?”
My eyes were so sore that I couldn’t stand it. I closed them tightly and covered them with both hands.
“Did you gouge out my eyes?”
“No. I just touched it lightly. I need you to understand what I see in the world so that the conversation can proceed smoothly.”
I lifted my eyelids as I listened to Winte’s words.
“… … What is this? Eww, it’s gross.”
Countless bugs were crawling on the floor.
