The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 80

Episode 80
“Where did we end our conversation?”
Cheryl said, patting the employee’s head.
“Mana and Nak. And we were talking about the depth of magic.”
“That’s right, that’s right. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I keep forgetting things. Is this what it means to grow old?”
“Once you’ve gotten old enough, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to just die.”
Cheryl stuck her tongue out.
“I don’t like that. Because I haven’t achieved what I want yet.”
“That’s too bad.”
Quilbian reached out and closed the wide-eyed employee’s eyes.
“I’m asking just in case, but is this sad because he died?”
The employee who became ‘this’ in an instant. Quilbian touched the tip of his nose.
“If I had to be specific, it’s not sad. As you know, living long means becoming numb to stimuli. The death of a person. I know it’s something to be astonished by my head, but my heart is calm.”
“Yes, that’s right. You’re similar to us.”
“Hearing that makes me feel disgusted.”
“Why? Are you still trying to claim to be human? With such a mental world and such a body?”
Cheryl made a blank expression.
“You’re pretending to know something when you’ve never actually seen it.”
“Although confirming with the naked eye is certainly an important process, we can also find out a lot through the clones. Since you managed to survive the explosion, you are now closer to us than to humans.”
“I don’t kill people that easily.”
“If necessary?”
“I guess I’ll kill you.”
“Look at that!”
“I don’t know, but it’s the subtle differences that are important. So don’t lump them together as the same monster.”
“Even though we’re the same monster.”
“That’s hard to refute, so say you’re a monster close to a human. You… … are a bit creepy.”
Quillvian looked at the body next to the table.
There was no reason for the man to die. He was just unlucky to be working today and happened to receive an order from Cheryl.
“There was no need to kill him.”
“You’re staring at me too much. It’s annoying.”
“It wasn’t a bad expression.”
“Did you get caught? I was just trying to see how you reacted. There’s a lot to learn about you. I need to know everything from your toenails to your hair.”
“It’s scary.”
I lifted the head of the waiter who was lying on the table. Cheryl didn’t say anything. I tried to lift the body, but it wouldn’t budge.
I didn’t know a dead person’s body could be this heavy.
I was going to ask for help from the people who were gathered together and trembling, but I stopped. If I called now, I would faint a hundred times out of a hundred times.
“Can I help you?”
“it’s okay.”
He dragged the body with difficulty and placed it behind the counter, the severed head resting neatly on the neck.
The woman’s body at the entrance was also moved.
I was sweating profusely.
After covering the body with a tablecloth, he approached the store owner.
“Once this is sorted out, I’ll ask you to take care of the rest. I know it’s scary and you’re out of your mind, but I still need someone to sort things out.”
I stopped trying to pat the shop owner’s shoulder, whose face had turned pale. His hands were stained red.
I returned to my seat and washed my hands with water.
“Is that the bare minimum of conscience?”
“What’s there to talk about conscience for? You’re the one who killed him.”
“Do you hate me?”
“You ask the obvious.”
I shook my hands and sat down.
“You can try to kill me like last time.”
“I’ll listen to everything and try my best. But I don’t think it’ll work. I don’t have much strength in this body.”
Quilbian tried to tie the knot. The Nak inside his body reacted, but it did not proceed to induce the phenomenon.
“Look. I can’t even use magic.”
“That’s because you’re not used to it yet. I think you’ll be able to do it in no time. You’re talented.”
“It’s been a while since I’ve heard such a compliment.”
He smiled mechanically.
“If I understand Nak and practice my magic more, will I be able to use my power here like you?”
Quilbian asked.
“I will. If I can do it, there’s no way you can’t.”
“Can you give me a trick? You need to improve your skills to break down the wall you guys have built.”
“That was really hard to make. We put half of our resources into it. It took a long time to recover. If I were asked to do it again, I would never do it.”
“You’re beating around the bush. Are you saying you won’t tell me?”
“I’m thinking about it. How much should I raise you? Winte will be leaving you soon. His curiosity won’t last long.”
“i think so too.”
“Once Winte leaves, you’ll be stuck, and I don’t want to eat something undercooked.”
Geron did not eat the children he had kidnapped right away, but consumed them after going through a ‘certain process’.
Even in the restaurant, the goblins were talking about how the ingredients were growing well and how they matched each other’s traits.
“I guess I am a very expensive and delicious food to you.”
“It’s still delicious, but I can’t touch it now because I’m thinking about the future. No fool would catch and eat a fry just because they’re bored. If you raise them well, they’ll turn into oily mackerel.”
“Then feed them so they can grow well. Nak, mana, and magic. Oh! How about I teach them a powerful magic? A magic that can burn holes in your heads.”
“I’m sorry, but even if you learn the magic I conceived, it won’t be of much use. Low-level magic loses all meaning in the face of high-level magic.”
Cheryl twirled her finger.
The water in the bottle rose and split into two in the air.
“If this were me.”
In front of Cheryl was a large blob of water, and in front of Quilbian was a barely visible drop of water.
“That little thing is you.”
“It’s so fucking small.”
The small water droplets moved quickly and struck the water mass. Of course, there was only a shallow ripple in the water mass, and no significant change.
“That’s the case with all power in the world. It’s useless in the face of a greater, more concentrated power.”
“But if you keep throwing it, it will change.”
Quillvian dipped his finger in water and flicked it. The flying droplets hit the water mass in front of Cheryl.
Small ripples continued to spread.
“When working in a barn, you have to watch out for red spots.”
“Red spots? What are those?”
Quillvien showed his little fingernail.
“There’s a bug that’s half the size of a fingernail. It’s fine in the winter, but in the summer, they sometimes live in the hay. They have red spots all over their bodies. If you look at them, they’re nothing special. They don’t have wings and they’re slow. They’re just insignificant bugs.”
Quilbian smiled and put his hand away.
“But if you get bitten by that guy, you die.”
“okay?”
“Don’t underestimate them just because they’re bugs. They each have their own talents. There are bugs that can kill humans, and there are bugs that can kill goblins.”
“We’ll have to be careful, Red Spot.”
Cheryl tore a piece of bread and dipped it into the meat sauce.
“I have a question, too.”
“say it.”
“Is this the world you created?”
Cheryl said as she looked around the store.
“Machines powered by steam. Newspapers printed by a printing press. A factory, not a guild. This is a first.”
“so do i.”
“What? Isn’t this the world you created?”
“How would I know something like this?”
“Then what on earth is this place?”
“I’m curious about that too. The gap, and.”
Quillvian looked back. He saw people crouching and praying for the hellish times to end.
“What will happen to them?”
“If it’s not something you created, then there’s another world out there somewhere. It’s a story that stimulates the imagination. There are so many worlds that I have to have.”
Cheryl pulled up a chair and sat down, her two greedy eyes growing even bigger.
“Right now, I can only continue this journey through you, right?”
“I don’t know.”
“Will you come to me? I will treat you very well. I will also help you so that other kids don’t eat you.”
Quillvian shrugged.
“I didn’t really have a creed. But after I met you guys, a sign was engraved in my head.”
“What does it say there?”
“Don’t believe in goblins.”
“That’s because they only meet inferior beings. They have no self-esteem. Those who have just realized their karma just kill anyone they come across to become stronger. But I’m different!”
Cheryl stood up and spun around gracefully.
“I know how to respect others, I know what a promise is, and I can bend when I want to. How about that?”
“Okay. There’s no need to reject someone you can communicate with.”
“really?”
Cheryl leaned in with a smile.
“Can I ask you one favor as proof of our reconciliation?”
Quilbian also said with a smile.
“Tell me, anything.”
“Will you die?”
“That’s difficult.”
“Then it’s a breakup. There’s nothing to talk about. Let’s just dig up what we can from each other. You have something to gain from me, and I have something to gain from you. Let’s call it a temporary agreement.”
“It’s a shame.”
Cheryl sat down and began tapping the table with each hand, one after the other. Tap, tap, tap, tap.
“I’m alone now, but Gene will find you soon.”
“Your friends?”
“Yeah. Like it or not, we’re connected. I can’t completely block out information. Gene will see you through me. I really don’t like that.”
“Then kill your friends. I’ll give you a chance to monopolize me.”
“I did think about that. But it’s difficult. Genes aren’t easy either. If I make a mistake, I might end up getting eaten instead.”
It was Cheryl who shook her head.
“After all, there is only one way.”
“What is it?”
“I’ll find you.”
“You know where it is. It’s the space you created.”
“Back then, I was able to go down easily because Twella guided me, but now it’s different. The location is unclear, and even if I find it, I don’t have the confidence to break through it. The magic that forms the barrier is in Korsa’s domain. Oh, she might come looking for you.”
“For the time being, guests are not allowed.”
“I won’t be going there right away. He has work to do too.”
That was a good thing.
I was worried that they might come in tomorrow.
“And there’s also Winte.”
Cheryl rested her chin on her hand and stared at Quillian.
“The more I look at it, the more I want it. I want it so badly.”
Cheryl’s pupils narrowed as she sat across from me.
“Okay. Make a promise with me.”
“promise?”
Cheryl brought her left hand up to my eye. Her fingers dug into my eye socket and plucked out my eyeball.
He flicked out his eyeball, which had nerves attached to it, and pushed it forward.
“I can’t give you my life as a gift of peace, but I can give you a good recipe.”
“Law?”
“You can think of it as a technology made entirely of Nacro. Like a curse of some sort?”
“They give you a curse as a gift.”
I got an eyeball. The pupil, which should have been fixed, was moving around on the white of the eye. It was a strange sight.
“Eat.”
“What are you telling me to believe in and eat this? It’s not even funny.”
“Ah! I have to make a promise.”
Cheryl dabbed the blood flowing from her eyes with her hand. The blood on her hand drew an unreadable pattern in the air.
“Can you read it?”
“No. I don’t recognize it at all. Is this the writing you made up?”
“That’s right. I thought you might recognize me, but that’s too bad. Just a moment.”
Cheryl snapped her fingers. A drop of blood flew out and hit Quillvian’s retina. His vision turned red.
“Do you know what I mean now?”
Quilbian nodded.
Although I still couldn’t read it, when I looked at it, the meaning of the pattern was conveyed to my mind.
This was a contract.
The covenant that Winte spoke of.
There was a strong restriction that if you broke it, you would die for no reason.
“Even if you meet my friend, don’t talk to him.”
“What if those friends give me a bigger gift?”
“Hmm, you’re not a gentleman. Okay. Just this once. When you meet another guy besides me, don’t talk to him and come to me. It’s a loss for me.”
“There is no business in this world that loses money.”
“Then I’ll call it a fair deal.”
Quilbian said, raising his eyes.
“Not a bad deal.”
