The Magician’s Memorial - Chapter 87

Episode 87
It was a small office. Gelion was smiling awkwardly and clearing away the documents that were piled up to about a hand’s length.
“It’s embarrassing to welcome guests in a place like this, but please understand given the circumstances.”
“No. I am grateful that you treated me like this despite my sudden visit.”
“I understand your feelings better than anyone else.”
Gelion approached and held out his hand again.
“Can you show me that power again?”
Quilbian took Gelion’s hand with a gloomy expression.
He moved Nak to create the spell he had been given as a gift from Cheryl. A weak curse passed through his hand and consumed Gellion’s eyes.
“It’s still amazing to experience again.”
Even though his vision must have gone dark, Gelion did not panic.
Quilbian took back the spell. It was such a weak curse that even if left alone, it would get better in a day.
“I consulted with Kim first. He said he heard a voice from heaven and that he was going through something like this, so what should I do? Then he told me about Gellion.”
Gelion nodded.
“Well done, well done. This is something that must be handled with caution. If you say you have heard the voice of God, all sorts of heretics and impure spellcasters may come running.”
“I was worried about that too, and I was just suffering, but I thought it would be okay if it was you, Gelion, who is a believer in Soap, so I came here.”
Gelion grabbed Quilbian’s hand tightly again.
“It was a good choice. Thank you for trusting me. Don’t worry anymore. You will soon find out whether the will of God given to you is a blessing or a prophecy warning of danger.”
It was Gelion who let go of the hand he had been holding tightly and stood up.
“Wait a minute. You must be really surprised. You should calm down by drinking something warm. Oh, and you also need to contact the Holy Land.”
It was Gelion who left the office, telling me to sit down.
*
Kim lifted her teacup and glanced at Quilbian out of the corner of her eye.
He blurts out lies so fluently. He speaks so well that even though I knew the truth, I found myself nodding along without thinking.
What on earth were you doing in the past?
“Stop rolling your eyes. Gellion will get suspicious.”
Quilbian said.
“I’m sorry. But… … You’re so different from the Quilbian I knew. What on earth did you do before? That spy that only has rumors about?”
“That’s not it. Just kill monsters and people. Kill all the ones that deserve to be killed, and help those that need to be helped… …and help them as much as necessary.”
“I told you before. I said I entered that body. Did you say something to Gelion to some extent… …”
“I’m not a god. I’m just a crazy human. And.”
Quillbian looked straight at Kim.
“Don’t believe in gods or anything like that. That guy won’t do anything for you. No, he can’t do anything for you. He’s retired.”
“what?”
It was obviously a joke, but it didn’t seem like a joke.
After waiting for about 10 more minutes while drinking tea, Gelion returned.
“I got a call from the Holy Land. Let’s leave right now.”
“Thank you so much for your help. I had no idea how to handle this.”
“Since the saintess is also in this holy place, you will be able to know for sure the truth of the voice you heard. Even if it is the wrath of God, the saintess can help you.”
Quilbian was tightly shutting his eyes and holding his hands together. Tears were seen in the corners of his eyes, and Kim turned her head away in horror.
A man who would commit murder without batting an eye, a man who would take a family hostage and threaten them, was putting on a show of being innocent like that.
Kim vowed that if this case went smoothly, she would convince her wife to leave the city.
It’s better to start over in a new place than to have a madman by your side.
I left the art museum.
The Holy Land was in the same northern part.
A holy place for the Soap sect centered around the nobility.
The white building in the center boasted grandeur even from afar.
The number of people walking along the road gradually decreased. Eventually, we arrived at a crossroads marked with a red spear indicating that it was a holy place.
A long line of people knelt along the red window and looked toward the cathedral in the distance.
“Follow me. I have permission to enter, so there will be no problem.”
Gellion passed the red window. Kim passed the boundary line, slightly nervous.
In the distance, she could see believers with dark blue cloths wrapped around their waists. Kim cast her gaze down.
The fanatics of Soap, the knights.
“I heard the news.”
The knight in the lead spoke to Gelion. A red thread was visible on the end of the cloth wrapped around his waist.
He was a high-ranking paladin who was as rare as the saint. He might be the closest aide to the saint.
“Since this is a matter of concern, we will guide you here. The priest and other visitors, please wait in the reception room.”
The paladin looked at Quilbian and waved politely. Quilbian, who had separated himself, headed towards the cathedral with the paladins.
Gelion, who had been watching from behind, said this to Seongho and then poured out words of emotion.
God’s grace is this and that, and I hope it’s not God’s wrath.
Kim looked at Quilbian, who had now turned into a dot, hiding her bitter expression.
Please don’t cause any accidents.
If you’re going to die, die alone.
“Let’s go. I’ll show you to the reception room.”
Kim followed Quilbian, who had disappeared from sight, and then followed another paladin.
*
I never thought I would be able to meet the saint right away. She was a saint who was kept hidden by a very closed religious order.
Quilbian raised his head.
On the ceiling was carved the face of a man looking down with a sinister expression.
For a moment, I thought that maybe I should be smiling affectionately.
“The great god Thorgan, who leads the believers of Soph to the light, has two faces. Sophim, the warm face that looks upon the innocent. And Nekfim, the face that appears when condemning the guilty.”
Is that Nexfim?
Quillvian feigned fear and looked at the paladin sitting in front of him.
“You are afraid.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I am an ordinary citizen who knows nothing. I am one of the components of this city, living from hand to mouth. To me, hearing the voice of God? Something is definitely wrong, and I cannot help but be afraid.”
He shed some sweat and even some tears.
I have lived for over 100 years, using the human body to its limits. No, if you think about the years I have experienced directly and indirectly, I have lived for hundreds of years. Maybe thousands of years.
In a situation where even the muscles controlled by the unconscious can be squeezed, producing sweat or tears was as easy as snapping one’s fingers.
The same goes for emotions.
They cannot see inside a human being. They can only infer emotions through the subtle movements of the muscles that decorate the surface of the face.
Unless you’re Winte, there’s no way you can read my mind.
“I understand.”
The intervals of breathing, the pitch of speech, the slightly tilted upper body.
It means that some of the doubts have been put aside. The human mind is like a wheeled carriage. It is difficult to get moving at first, but once it starts moving, it rolls on its own with just a slight push.
“I just want to go back to my normal life. Please take away this voice and this unknown power that came to me.”
“Aren’t you greedy? If you let the world know, you could make a lot of money.”
“I just like it plain and simple. And the distribution isn’t so big that I can take risks.”
The knight smiled faintly.
“No. You are a very wise and courageous man. I am ashamed that I ever doubted you for even a moment.”
“Don’t say that. I just want to go back to the time when I didn’t know anything.”
Quillvian cautiously extended both hands forward.
“Will you take this voice, this power?”
“That’s not for me to decide. But if it’s truly some kind of evidence from heaven, not some special power, I’d like to experience it too.”
The knight took his hand.
Quilbian created and channeled a spell, just as he had done to Gelion.
Gelion did not notice the subtlety of the spell.
How about a paladin?
It wasn’t a big deal even if the spell was judged to be a diabolical power rather than a heavenly power. Whether it was the grace of God or an evil power, it was enough of a reason to meet the saint.
If the Paladin tries to kill you by his own will, then he will either subdue you or run away and head towards the Saintess.
My intuition was sending me signals.
There’s that monster over there.
I couldn’t tell if he was still unconscious or if he was just waiting for me to come find him because he was annoyed.
It was something that could have been done by hitting him in the face and asking him.
The spell blinded the paladin’s eyes.
The knight asked calmly.
“Can you hear the word of God, the voice of heaven now?”
Quilbian nodded and answered.
“Yes. He tells me to go forward. He tells me to go forward and convey. I don’t know what he wants me to convey. Please, gather this power and personally… … .”
The paladin shook his head and took his hand away. Quilbian quickly took back the curse.
The paladin scanned his surroundings with his regained vision and then looked at Quilbian again.
“It is not a divine power. My divine power did not respond. The power and words that have been given to you are a very important revelation. It is not something I can interpret or try to interpret.”
The knight has risen.
“I must go to the saint. The great saint is also there. I must go and convey the word of God to them as I have done.”
“May I dare to meet them?”
The knight responded with a laugh.
“God has guided you, so don’t worry.”
After passing through a long hallway paved with pure white stone, I finally arrived in front of a firmly closed door.
Before coming here, I was told that this was a sacred prayer room.
The paladin touched the door. The heavy doors opened wide on both sides, emitting light.
“You can just come in.”
“Is it okay for me to go in alone?”
“Please rest assured, this is a place where only those who are permitted to enter are permitted to do so.”
He nodded heavily and went inside.
It was a place with a soft light.
In the center was a red cloth, on which stood a saint and a great saint.
Fucking bitch.
Quillvien checked the face of the saint, Cheryl. At the same time, his head began to throbbing.
Dumb looking eyes.
Cheryl seemed to have lost her mind.
A terrible goblin-like smell wafted in. I couldn’t open my eyes, but it was definitely Cheryl.
Are you as confused as the groom Quilbian?
“Can I go?”
I asked cautiously.
The great man was in his seventies, and he had a very eccentric appearance. His wrinkled mouth looked like it would spit out curses if he opened it.
“Come.”
It was a kind voice, unlike his appearance.
He approached them slowly and knelt down in front of them.
“He came to deliver the word of God.”
“Yes, but I don’t know what it means.”
“Yes, God doesn’t speak easily. He adds a little test to make sure we receive it correctly.”
The adult extended his hand.
It seemed like I had heard an explanation in advance.
Quilbian spread the law.
“Ah, I can’t see it. It seems to foreshadow the disaster that is coming upon us. Perhaps God has pity on us and is warning us.”
He was a great man who shed tears of emotion.
Looking at the things that were happening, the gods of this world were not normal. Or, the religious sect called Sop was abnormal as a group.
“Your Majesty, please look. I wish you would tell me something else. A disaster, it is so terrible.”
Finally got there.
Quilbian took the saint’s hand and recited the spell.
You can tell since it was yours originally, right?
I looked up at the saint with my eyes wide open.
